He was expected to announce a commission of inquiry into allegations that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu interfered in certain police investigations and has a dodgy relationship with police service providerVusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.</p><p>What is less clear is what action Ramaphosawill take against Mchunu.</p><p>The minister is at the centre of controversy after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive allegations last week.</p><p>Mkhwanazi alleged that specific businesspeople are being shielded by national police leadership. He also claimed there was pressure on his officers to drop investigations into politically connected people.</p><p>ALSO READ: Senzo Mchunu investigation will take longer to finalise, says Public Protector</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> JUST IN: Police Minister Senzo Mchunu placed on leave of absence </p> </p> </p>Ramaphosa’s options to take action against Mchunu<p>Ramaphosa is expected to announce what steps he will take on the matter after widespread calls this week for him to act.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>A report in City Press states that the president has considered three options regarding Mchunu:</p>Move Mchunu to another portfolio while the commission of inquiry takes place.Allow Mchunu to step down voluntarily.Force the minister to step aside once police officially open an investigation.<p>The Sunday Times reports that Mchunu has asked Ramaphosa to grant him special leave.</p><p>Following Mkhwanazi’s allegations, the police minister denied having connections to Matlala. Photo: JUAN MABROMATA / AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The curtain comes down on the first edition of FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup when reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain face Chelsea in Sunday’s final at the MetLife Stadium, with Donald Trump among those set to be in attendance.</p><p>It is the kind of glamour match-up that FIFA president Gianni Infantino would have been hoping for to wrap up the tournament, which on Saturday he labelled as marking the start of “the golden era of club football”.</p><p>ALSO READ: Enrique warns PSG against complacency in Club World Cup final</p><p>Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca acknowledged ahead of the game that PSG are “probably in this moment the best team in the world”, and the French side are hoping to cap off the most remarkable of seasons by completing a stunning clean sweep of trophies.</p><p>PSG won a French league and cup double before claiming the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history with a record-breaking 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the final at the end of May.</p><p>Luis Enrique’s side have carried that form over into the Club World Cup, putting four goals past Atletico Madrid in the group stage and four more past Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami before defeating Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.</p><p>They then produced a masterclass in a 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid in the semi-finals on Wednesday.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“It has been a fantastic season and for us it is very important that we end it in the best possible manner,” Luis Enrique said as he spoke to reporters on Friday.</p><p>It would be a shock if Chelsea claimed the trophy against a PSG side led by Ballon d’Or candidate Ousmane Dembele.</p><p>However, the Stamford Bridge side came to the United States fresh from finishing fourth in the Premier League and winning the UEFA Conference League.</p><p>“They are one of the hottest teams in the world at the moment but this is the final, a one-off game,” said Chelsea’s Reece James.</p><p> </p><p>“Everyone has them down as strong favourites but I have been in many finals before where we have been favourites and we have not come out on top.</p><p>“That doesn’t mean too much to me and I don’t really care that everyone is bigging up the opposition.”</p><p>Chelsea were hoping that midfield lynchpin Moises Caicedo would recover in time from a twisted ankle picked up in the semi-final victory over Fluminense on Tuesday.</p>– Heat and huge prize money –<p>The match will be played at the 82,500-capacity MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop. The home of NFL sides the New York Giants and New York Jets will also be the venue for the 2026 World Cup final.</p><p> </p><p>It goes ahead at 3:00 pm local time (1900 GMT) amid ongoing concerns about the impact of high temperatures during the tournament, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez warning on Friday that playing in the middle of the afternoon was “very dangerous”.</p><p>There are also concerns about the long-term impact on players of the match calendar — the final will be the 65th game for PSG since their season began last August, and the 64th for Chelsea.</p><p>However, the financial rewards for all teams involved at the Club World Cup are enormous, and especially for the finalists.</p><p>Chelsea and PSG are assured to go home with over $100 million in prize money, with the definitive amount to become clear after the final — that money will be particularly welcome for Chelsea after they were recently fined by UEFA for breaching financial rules.</p><p>ALSO READ: Maresca optimistic for Chelsea against ‘best in world’ PSG</p><p> </p><p>Infantino, meanwhile, was in buoyant mood as he spoke to media at Trump Tower in New York City on Saturday.</p><p>“We created something new, something which is here to stay, something which is changing the landscape of club football,” he said of the 32-team tournament, the next edition of which is set to take place in 2029.</p><p>“It is already the most successful club competition in the world.”</p> </p> <p> Read more on these topics Chelsea F.C. Picture: Adobe Stock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Eskom says it has spentR5.26 billion on fuel for its fleet of open-cycle gas turbines (OCGT), generating 892.42GWh to keep the lights on so far this financial year.</p><p>This is higher than the 485.39GWh generated during the same period last year.</p><p>The utility stated that the power system remains stable and continues to demonstrate resilience in meeting winter demand.</p>System constraints<p>Eskom added that while occasional system constraints do arise, they are effectively managed, with sufficient emergency reserves being deployed during morning and evening peak periods.</p><p>Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said the year-to-date load factor for OGCT has marginally increased to 10.78%, reflecting a 0.08% increase compared to the previous week.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> How to read and upload your meter readings — and will it save you money? </p> </p> </p><p>“This figure remains higher than the 5.87% recorded during the same period last year. Although diesel usage is within budget, it is expected to decline as more units return to service, increasing available generation capacity.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ:Eskom gets boost as Kusile’s final unit adds 800MW to grid</p>Load shedding<p>Mokwena stated that Eskom’s winter outlook, covering the period from 5 May to 31 August, has not changed.</p><p>“It indicates that load shedding will not be necessary if unplanned outages stay below 13 000MW. If outages rise to 15 000MW, load shedding would be limited to a maximum of 21 days out of 153 days and restricted to stage 2.”</p><p>According to Eskom, for the week of 4 to 10 July 2025, unplanned outages averaged 13 628MW – a decrease from the previous week, but 1 525MW higher than the same period last year and 628MW above the base case estimate of 13 000MW.</p><p> </p>Electricity demand<p>Mokwena said that while load shedding remains suspended, electricity demand is rising during the winter period.</p><p>“Eskom urges the public to avoid illegal connections and energy theft. Picture: Steven Ferdman/Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Despite reports that Mcebisi Jonas has received the cold shoulder from US President Donald Trump’s administration, President Cyril Ramaphosa is “satisfied” with the work of his special envoy.</p><p>In April, Ramaphosa appointed Jonas to improve South Africa’s relations with the US.</p><p>Some questioned this appointment when comments made by Jonas during an Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Annual Lecture in 2020 resurfaced. The former deputy finance minister said Trump was a racist and narcissistic.</p>Jonas gets cold shoulder from Trump<p>City Press reports there are growing concerns that Jonas is struggling to gain access to Trump’s administration.</p><p>“Government has been without authoritative representation in the US since March, even though America is SA’s second-largest trading partner,” a source told the publication.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Farm worker dies after US immigration raid in California </p> </p> </p><p>Jonas’s lack of progress in the US has led to calls for Ramaphosa to fast find a new ambassador to the US.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The previous South African ambassador to the US,Ebrahim Rasool, was expelled for criticising Trump’s administration. This came after he said the US president was leading a white supremacist movement.</p>Absent from Ramaphosa’s delegation<p>Claims that Jonas was being snubbed by Trump grew after he was not included in Ramaphosa’s delegation that visited the Oval Office in May. Some also said Jonas was not given a US visa.</p><p>At the time, the Presidency dismissed those allegations.</p><p>“Initial interpretations of procedural matters, communicated in good faith, have been amended following confirmation that Mr Jonas holds a valid visa for travel to the United States of America,” it said.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Presidency clarifies Mcebisi Jonas’ absence from Ramaphosa’s meeting with Trump</p><p>It said Jonas helped Ramaphosa prepare for the meeting with Trump.</p><p>“Mr. Jonas contributed to preparatory engagements ahead of the meeting between President Ramaphosa and President Donald Trump, including consultations abroad. His absence from Washington, at his own request, has no bearing on the president’s official programme.”</p>US tariffs<p>The struggles of Jonas to make inroads in the US have come into sharper focus since Trump announced he would impose 30% import tariffs on South Africa from 1 August.</p><p> </p><p>Ramaphosa has since accused the US government of reaching the 30% figure through a flawed interpretation of trade data.</p><p>ALSO READ: Ramaphosa disputes Trump’s 30% tariff claim as ‘not accurate’</p>Jonas’s achievements?<p>When asked by City Press what Jonas has achieved since he took on the role of US envoy, Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya refused to divulge any details.</p><p>“The work of envoys is not a public affair, they are not ministers or publicly elected officers. His work and how he carries it out is not a matter of collective responsibility with anyone. Picture: Anton Geyser/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Scrumhalf Grant Williams admitted to feeling nervous in the build-up to his return from injury for the second Springbok–Italy Test, which ended 45–0 to the South Africans.</p><p>But once back on the field, he was thrilled to be playing again — even if he missed the moment to set up a try for Willie le Roux on his 100th Test — and said he’s excited about what the rest of the season holds.</p><p>Williams last played almost three months ago, when the Sharks travelled to Edinburgh in the United Rugby Championship (URC) on 18 April. An ongoing neck injury kept him out of the next three URC pool games, the quarter-final and semi-final.</p><p>He missed the Boks’ first game of the season, a friendly against the invitational side Barbarians in June, before the first Test against Italy at the beginning of the month, which the Springboks won 42–24.</p>Williams ‘took’ Willie le Roux’s try<p>He finally returned to action in the second Test at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, and for the most part didn’t look as nervous as he admitted he was afterwards, being quick on the feed and finishing off a great team try which came from an Edwill van der Merwe line break and Makazole Mapimpi link-up.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Springboks blank Italy: Four talking points </p> </p> </p><p>It was the first try of the day and Le Roux was there at Williams’ side to finish the score if he was tackled, or perhaps graciously receive the ball to record a score in his milestone match.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“It was actually Willie’s try that I took,” Williams said afterwards. Still, he said he felt calmer after scoring.</p><p>“I hadn’t played in three months. It was frustrating this week, the amount of nerves and having to play in a Springbok jersey [first].”</p>Nervy scrumhalf happy to be back, link up with Libbok<p>The number nine said he would have preferred to have played for the Sharks in domestic rugby, and it had been daunting to return to the highest level after such a long injury lay-off.</p><p>“But happy to get the win and just happy to play again. A bit of rust but looking forward to the next couple of weeks.”</p><p> </p><p>Williams said it was especially enjoyable linking up with flyhalf Manie Libbok as the halfback pair. While Libbok missed his first two kicks at posts, he commanded the backline well and created opportunities in open play. He also slotted the next five conversions.</p><p>“The plan was to try certain things and it worked. It is always special to play with Manie, we have a good relationship. Picture: Etsuo Hara/Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>One of the perks of winning the Fifa Club World Cup, apart from a shiny trophy and millions of dollars, is that the victors will be able to wear a gold Fifa badge on their shirts that says ‘world champions’ for four years.</p><p>The term ‘world champions’ will no doubt be sneered at in certain quarters, given that not all of the best clubs in the world have even taken part in Fifa’s newly-expanded 32-team competition.</p><p>On the other hand, in a country like the USA (the Club World Cup hosts this year), where the internal baseball finale is called the World Series, and the NFL and NBA victors tend to be referred to as world champions, the Club World Cup is an intrepid backpacker.</p><p>Of the league of nations competing, only two are left, with Paris St Germain (PSG) and Chelsea contesting Sunday’s final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.</p><p>Representing France, and in no small way Qatar, are PSG, the reigning European champions who are the clear favourites to add that very ‘world champions’ badge to their shirt.</p><p>Representing England, and in no small way American capitalism, are Chelsea FC, whose expensively assembled squad of young players will hope to do what the rest of Europe has not managed this season — knock Luis Enrique’s PSG off their perch.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Both these sides are not afraid of splashing the cash. PSG have spent close to R50 billion on players since Qatar Sports Investment took over the club in 2011.</p><p>But despite bringing in the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi, it took an improved team ethic, and none of these ‘Galacticos’ for PSG to win the Uefa Champions League for the first time this season.</p><p>Chelsea’s mainly American owners have also spent billions on players since they bought Chelsea in 2022.</p><p>At times their transfer strategy has seemed bizarrely scattergun, but last season did see signs of a competitive side emerging under Italian head coach Enzo Maresca.</p><p> </p><p>Still PSG have the form and the comparative quality, so it is not surprising they are priced at 1.73 to win by the latest Betway odds.</p><p>Chelsea, at a healthy 4.70, will certainly give better returns for those willing to take a risk, as will the draw, priced at 3.90.</p><p>Please note that these Betway odds are correct at the time of writing and subject to change.</p> </p> <p> Read more on these topics Chelsea F.C. He is also suspected by authorities in the United States (US) of being the leader of a Islamic State (Isis) cell operating in South Africa.</p>ISA intended to bring Sharia law to South Africa<p>In May, Hoomer said he had started ISA because he wanted to introduce Sharia law to South Africa.</p><p>“It was easy for me to lie and make a false name and come into politics. But, I wanted to make it clear from day one that we want Sharia law because there is too much injustice in the world, especially with democracy enslaving all of mankind,” Hoomer toldSAFM.</p><p>The IEC has now put that on hold.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Dirco slams old travel advisory about terrorism in South Africa </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Durban man previously accused of terrorism wants to run for election</p><p> </p><p> </p>IEC rejects application<p>It said it rejected ISA’s application on three grounds.</p><p>The first is that ISA did not submit the required 300 signatures from registered voters that support the formation of the party.</p><p>The second reason is that ISA published the notice of its application in a newspaper that is only circulated in small parts of the eThekwini municipality.</p><p>“The publication in only some parts of the municipal area is not sufficient to create awareness of the application,” the IEC said.</p><p> </p>More than 200 objections<p>The third reason is that the IEC received more than 200 objections to the formation of ISA.</p><p>It said individuals and organisations took issue with the party’s “intention to develop policies based on Sharia law”.</p><p>The IEC added that the objectors claimed that part of ISA’s constitution is “antithetical to the secular and inclusive nature of the principles underpinning the South African constitutional order”. Picture: Ronny Hartmann / AFP.</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Marc Marquez won a bruising German MotoGP on Sunday to mark his 200th premier class start in style and stretch his lead in the world championship.</p><p>His brother Alex Marquez took second with Francesco Bagnaia third as only 10 riders finished, the lowest number completing a MotoGP since 2011.</p><p>While the rest of the grid struggled to remain on their bikes at this notoriously tricky Sachsenring track, Marc Marquez enjoyed a dream afternoon.</p><p>Setting off from pole he was never challenged, crossing the line over six seconds clear for his seventh perfect weekend of 2025 having also won Saturday’s sprint.</p><p>At the midway stage of the 22-race campaign Marquez leads brother Alex by 83 points in the riders’ standings, with his Ducati factory teammate Bagnaia a yawning 147 off the lead.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Marc Marquez takes seventh pole of season at German MotoGP </p> </p> </p><p>“My confidence is super high now coming here withthree wins in a row and now it’s four,” beamed Marquez.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“I have to be really concentrated for the second half of the season,” he added.</p><p>His younger sibling was competing despite fracturing his left hand at the Dutch MotoGP a fortnight ago.</p><p>“It’s unbelievable, thanks to the doctors and everyone that I’m here,” he said after his 100th MotoGP start.</p><p>For Marquez this was his seventh race win of the year and fourth on the trot as he tightens his grip on a seventh MotoGP world title – and first since 2019 – to draw level with the legendary Valentino Rossi.</p><p> </p>Attritional <p>Despite sunshine taking over from Saturday’s rain, the race proved one of the most attritional in years with eight riders crashing and two unable to take part after coming a cropper on Saturday.</p><p>The last time only 10 riders completed a MotoGP was in Australia, 14 years ago.</p><p>Pole-sitter Marquez enjoyed an electric getaway from the front of the grid, in contrast to 24 hours earlier.</p><p>Then, a first turn mistake had dropped him down the pack, and it wasn’t until his last lap overtake of Marco Bezzecchi that he wrapped up his 10th sprint out of 11.</p><p> </p><p>On a dry track, Marquez quickly pulled clear of the chasing pack led by Fabio Di Giannantonio, who had set a new lap record in practice on Friday.</p><p>With Marquez set fair for another demolition job – he’d pulled almost two seconds clear by lap 10 of 30 – his main danger was maintaining focus and concentration around the ultra-demanding circuit with its short straights and tight bends in the former East Germany.</p><p>Others were not enjoying their afternoon at one of the toughest venues on the calendar quite so much – notably Pedro Acosta and Miguel Oliveira who both crashed out.</p><p>On lap 18 Di Giannantonio and Johann Zarco also hit the deck independently at turn one.</p><p> </p><p>That left Bezzecchi’s Aprilia chasing Marquez, a distant four-and-a-half seconds up the road.</p><p>But that situation only lasted until the following lap when Bezzecchi became the latest victim of turn one.</p><p>The DNF tally swelled even further with the exits of Lorenzo Savadori, Ai Ogura and former champion Joan Mir.</p><p>Two riders unable to line up on Sunday were KTM-Tech 3 duo Maverick Vinales, out with a fractured shoulder after a heavy fall in qualifying, and his appendicitics-hit teammate Enea Bastianini.</p><p> </p><p>Also missing was Franco Morbidelli after his bone-crunching crash in Saturday’s sprint.</p><p>The MotoGP season moves on to Czechia next Sunday where all eyes will be on defending champion Jorge Martin.</p><p>The luckless Spaniard has not finished a race this season after a series of heavy crashes, but has set his sights on Brno for his return to action.</p> </p> <p> Read more on these topics MotoGP </p> Marc Marquez dominates bruising German MotoGP \| The Citizen	查看 4456	《公民报》	2025-07-13 22:37:17 2025-07-14 02:14:18	word

I am appalled by how I behaved, and I take full accountability,” she said.</p><p>She apologised to the affected cast members and said she had reached out to them both publicly and privately.</p><p>“I’ve also taken time to engage with Gagasi FM management regarding the negative attention my participation in the show has brought to the station. While my work on radio and my presence on the show are two separate platforms, both Gagasi FM and I agree that it is important I take accountability.”</p><p> </p><p>Gagasi FM has also released a statement in response to Ntuli’s altercation on The Real Housewives of Durban.</p><p>“While the show is independent from Gagasi FM, we acknowledge that Minnie’s conduct has had an impact on both our brand and the community we serve,” the station said.</p><p>Gagasi FM added that Ntuli has shown remorse, issued an apology to the production company and cast members, and is committed to receiving professional support to manage her emotional responses.</p><p>“As a station, we are committed to supporting a process that encourages healing, forgiveness, and mutual respect. To address these allegations and the implications of these allegations, I’m establishing a judicial commission of inquiry that will be chaired by acting deputy chief justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga,” said Ramaphosa.</p><p>Cachalia is a professor of law at the University of the Witwatersrand and is the chairperson of the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council. He previously served as the MEC of Community Safety in Gauteng.</p>Explosive allegations by Mkhwanazi<p>Ramaphosa took this action after KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi last week alleged that Mchunu interfered in police investigations. Picture: Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has accepted President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to place him on a leave of absence following explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.</p><p>Ramaphosa announced on Sunday evening that a judicial commission of inquiry will probe claims that organised crime syndicates have infiltrated law enforcement and intelligence agencies—accusations that directly implicate senior political figures, including Mchunu.</p><p>“I welcome and respect the President’s decision and pledge my commitment to the process,” said Mchunu.</p><p>“Honour and integrity are the virtues I personally subscribe to… I stand ready to respond to the accusations against me and account to the citizens of the Republic, fully and honestly so.”</p>Grave allegations’ prompt urgent action<p>Mchunu’s leave follows allegations that he interfered with sensitive investigations and colluded with businesspeople, one reportedly facing murder charges, to disband the Political Killings Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Police Minister Senzo Mchunu placed on leave of absence </p> </p> </p><p>“These allegations, if proven true, threaten to undermine the confidence of South Africans in the ability of the South African Police Service to protect them,” Ramaphosa warned.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The president said the commission, chaired by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, would probe the alleged facilitation of organised crime, manipulation of investigations, and the targeting of whistleblowers across law enforcement agencies.</p><p>Madlanga will be assisted by Advocates Sesi Baloyi SC and Sandile Khumalo SC. The inquiry is expected to produce interim reports within three and six months, with a final report to follow.</p>New acting police minister appointed<p>In the interim, Ramaphosa has appointed Professor Firoz Cachalia as acting Minister of Police. Cachalia, who previously served as Gauteng’s MEC for Community Safety, is currently chair of the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council.</p><p>Until Cachalia assumes duties in August, an acting minister from within the Cabinet will be announced.</p><p> </p><p>“It is critical that these matters be attended to with the necessary urgency and thoroughness,” Ramaphosa said.</p><p>“We will ensure that the Saps continue to function without hindrance.”</p><p>The Commission is expected to complete its work and submit a final report to the President.
