More Commerce Howard Lutnick (R), speaks to the press in the Oval Office on February 3.</p></fbs-accordion><small>AFP via Getty Images</small></p>Timeline<p><p>Feb. 7Trump made his first public comments about imposing sweeping tariffs on foreign imports—after already announcing separate tariffs on goods from China, Canada and Mexico—telling reporters he wanted reciprocal tariffs that match the duties countries levy on American goods, saying he wants to make sure “we’re treated evenly” and that “we don’t want any more, any less.”</p><p>Feb. 13Trump signed a memorandum directing his administration to fix its “non-reciprocal trade arrangements” with other countries by “determining the equivalent of a reciprocal tariff with respect to each foreign trading partner,” taking into account what tariffs a country levies on American goods, but also related costs like value-added taxes and nontariff trade barriers like regulations that make it harder for the U.S. to import their goods.</p><p>March 26The Trump administration announced 25% tariffs on imported cars to be imposed starting April 3, with an extension to imported auto parts starting May 3, as Trump suggested the levies would accelerate “tremendous growth in the automobile industry” as automakers build more U.S.-based plants.</p><p>March 27Trump indicated his auto tariffs would be “permanent” throughout his second term.</p><p>March 31White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters there would be “no exemptions at this time” to Trump’s impending tariffs on foreign goods.</p><p>April 2Trump rolled out his tariff policy at a “Liberation Day” event at the White House, releasing details of the plan that showed nearly all countries (even uninhabited ones) facing tariffs ranging from 10% and 50%—but the Trump administration appeared to calculate by just dividing a country’s trade surplus with the U.S. by its export value, rather than the more sophisticated formula the administration claimed (flip-flop No.1 ).</p><p>Contrary to Leavitt’s March 31 comments, the executive order imposing the tariffs exempted “copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, lumber articles, certain critical minerals, and energy and energy products” (flip-flop No. 2).</p><p>Trump also backtracked on his previous commitment for the U.S. to charge reciprocal tariffs matching the ones other countries impose on American goods, saying in his speech the administration would instead “charge them approximately half of what … [other countries] have been charging us, so the tariffs will be not a full reciprocal,” adding, “I could have done that, I guess, but it would have been tough for a lot of countries and we didn’t want to do that” (flip-flop No. 3).</p><p>April 3, 4 p.m. EDTTrump trade adviser Peter Navarro denied to CNBC that Trump intended to negotiate his tariffs with other countries—saying, “This is not a negotiation. This is not that. This is a national emergency”—after Lutnick told CNN earlier that day Trump was “not going to back off” his tariffs.</p><p>April 3, 5 p.m. EDTTrump told reporters aboard Air Force One he was open to negotiating the tariffs—less than an hour after Navarro’s comments—saying the U.S. has “great power to negotiate” because of the tariffs and he was open to making a deal “if somebody said that we’re going to give you something that’s so phenomenal, as long as they’re giving us something that’s good” (flip-flop No. 4).</p><p>April 4, 8:44 a.m. EDTTrump insisted he wouldn’t back off his tariff policy, writing on Truth Social, “TO THE MANY INVESTORS COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES AND INVESTING MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF MONEY, MY POLICIES WILL NEVER CHANGE.”</p><p>April 6, 9-11:30 a.m. EDTMultiple Trump advisers suggested on Sunday shows Trump will not back off his tariffs for the foreseeable future, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent telling “Meet the Press” the tariffs are “not the kind of thing you can negotiate away in days or weeks” and Lutnick telling CBS News “there is no postponing” the tariffs taking effect.</p><p>Trump aides also suggested the president was open to negotiations, however, with White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett telling ABC News “more than 50 countries” have reached out about starting talks, while Bessent said negotiations were “gonna be a decision for President Trump, but … he"s created maximum leverage for himself” (flip-flop No. 5). </p><p>Lutnick seemingly doubled down on tariffs being imposed on smartphone imports, despite the tariffs causing Apple’s stock price to decline, telling CBS, “The army of millions and millions of human beings screwing in little, little screws to make iPhones, that kind of thing is going to come to America.”</p><p>April 7, 11:14 a.m. EDTTrump threatened additional 50% tariffs on China in response to Beijing retaliating against his tariffs and said “all talks” with the country’s government “will be terminated,” but said his administration would begin tariff negotiations “immediately” with other countries that have reached out—with Bessent then confirming shortly after the president had directed him to begin negotiations with Japan.</p><p>April 7, 3 p.m. EDTSpeaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said he was “not looking at” pausing his tariffs, and, when asked if his tariffs were permanent or if they could be negotiated, said, “Both can be true,” adding, “There can be permanent tariffs, and there can also be negotiations.”</p><p>The president also insisted he would move forward with his tariff agenda despite them roiling the stock market, saying, “No other president would be willing to do what I’m doing,” but “I don’t mind going through it because I see a beautiful picture at the end.”</p><p>April 8Trump trade representative Jamieson Greer testified to the Senate Finance Committee the White House “will have the president’s plan go into effect” on April 9 as scheduled—denying there would be any delay—but the government was “coupling that with immediate negotiations.”</p><p>April 8, 1 p.m. EDTLeavitt told reporters during a press briefing that Trump has directed his trade team to “have tailor-made trade deals with each and every country that calls up this administration to strike a deal,” and emphasized Trump intended to bring manufacturing of tech products to the U.S., saying the president “absolutely” thinks iPhones and other products could be made in the U.S. and Trump “believes we have the labor, we have the workforce, we have the resources to do it.”</p><p>April 9, 9:33 a.m. EDTTrump told Americans to “BE COOL” after the stock market plunged in response to his tariffs taking effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT, writing on Truth Social, “Everything is going to work out well,” and later urging Americans to buy stock and for companies to move their operations to the U.S.</p><p>April 9, 1:18 p.m. EDTIn a stunning about face, Trump announced on Truth Social he was pausing the worst of his tariffs on most countries for 90 days, though he would continue a baseline 10% tariff rate and raise his tariffs on most Chinese goods by 125%. (flip-flop No. 6).</p><p>Trump officials suggested immediately after his announcement the pause was part of the president’s negotiating strategy, with Bessent telling reporters, “This was his strategy all along” and Trump “goaded China into a bad position,” while Leavitt told reporters, “Many of you in the media clearly missed the art of the deal.”</p><p>The president almost immediately contradicted those comments, telling reporters later Wednesday he had decided to pause the tariffs because “people were jumping a little bit out of line. They were getting yippy,” also saying his plan to pause the tariffs “probably came together early this morning,” after the tariffs had taken effect (flip-flop No. 7).</p><p>April 9, 3 p.m. EDTTrump also told reporters in the Oval Office he still intends to impose additional tariffs on pharmaceuticals as well as semiconductor chips, saying the U.S. will build a chips factory that “will be one of the largest plants in the world” and everything needed in order to approve it will be “done in a matter of months.”</p><p>April 10, 11 a.m. EDTTrump stood by his tariff policy as markets went down again after an initial rally in response to the 90-day pause, saying at a Cabinet meeting, “We think we’re in very good shape. We think we’re doing very well. Again, there’ll be a transition cost and transition problems, but in the end, it’s going to be a beautiful thing.”</p><p>April 11, 5 p.m. EDTTrump told reporters on Air Force One he thinks his 10% baseline tariff rate is likely “the floor,” though there “could be a couple of exceptions,” also saying he’s “very comfortable now” with at least 145% tariffs on Chinese imports while still leaving room for negotiations.</p><p>April 11, 10:36 p.m. EDTU.S. Customs and Border Protection issued “Reciprocal Tariff Exclusion” guidance saying smartphones, computers and other electronic devices were now exempt from the tariffs, countering the previous statements from Trump and his officials suggesting they wanted to move such manufacturing to the U.S. (flip-flop No. 8).</p><p>April 12The White House said in response to the exemption on tech products the administration still wants to move manufacturing of those products to the U.S., with Leavitt saying in a statement, “President Trump has made it clear America cannot rely on China to manufacture critical technologies such as semiconductors, chips, smartphones, and laptops … these companies are hustling to onshore their manufacturing in the United States as soon as possible.”</p><p>April 13, 9 a.m. EDTLutnick told ABC’s “This Week” the exemption on semiconductors and other goods is only temporary, claiming Trump is still crafting tariffs on tech goods and pharmaceuticals that will be rolled out “in probably a month or two.”</p><p>April 13, 3:36 p.m. EDTTrump claimed on Truth Social that contrary to the customs announcement, there was “no Tariff ‘exception’ announced on Friday” and the tariffs on smartphones and other goods are “just moving to a different Tariff ‘bucket,’ adding his administration will be “taking a look at Semiconductors and the WHOLE ELECTRONICS SUPPLY CHAIN in the upcoming National Security Tariff Investigations” (flip-flop No. 9).</p><p>Later in the day, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he would soon announce tariff rates for chips, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, also promising that tariffs would be restored for electronics “very soon,” but he would also “talk to companies,” arguing, “You have to show a certain flexibility. Nobody should be so rigid.”</p><p>April 14Trump told reporters he would consider pausing his tariffs on automobiles as he noted some automakers moved production to the U.S., saying, “I’m looking at something to help some of the car companies, where they’re shifting to parts that were made in Canada, Mexico and other places.”</p><p>April 17, 4 p.m. EDTTrump told reporters his administration is “going to make a deal with everybody” on trade and he thinks the deals will be “concluded” “over the next three or four weeks,” adding, “At a certain point, if we don’t make a deal we’ll just set a limit, we’ll set a tariff … and we’ll say, ‘Come in and shop.’” </p><p>Trump also told reporters that day he’ll “make a very good deal with China” and he’s “100 percent” sure the U.S. can make a trade deal with the European Union, adding he’s “in no rush” to announce deals with specific countries.</p><p>April 22, 4 p.m. EDTTrump told reporters he won’t play “hard ball” with China in their tariff negotiations and floated that he could lower his punishing 145% tariff rate on Chinese imports, saying it is “very high” and the rate will “come down substantially, but it won’t be zero”—contradicting his previous comments that he’s “comfortable” with where the tariffs now stand (flip-flop No. 10).</p><p>April 23, 11 a.m. EDTBessent countered Trump’s comments about lowering China’s tariffs, telling reporters Trump had not made any offer to unilaterally lower the tariff rate on Chinese goods—though he added, “I don’t think either side believes that the current tariff levels are sustainable, so I would not be surprised if they went down in a mutual way.”</p><p>The president and his treasury secretary also conflicted on whether the U.S. is already in trade negotiations with China: Trump told reporters his administration is “actively” talking with China, while Bessent told reporters in a separate appearance that “both sides are waiting to speak to the other,” adding when asked if that meant the two countries aren’t in trade discussions, “Not yet.”</p><p>April 29Trump signed an executive order exempting companies paying the 25% tariff on imported cars and auto parts from paying other tariffs, such as those on steel and aluminum (flip-flop No. 11).</p><p>Companies will also receive a reimbursement on tariffs for imported parts equal to up to 3.75% of the value of a new car in the first year and 2.5% of the car’s value in the second year before it’s phased out, multiple outlets reported.</p><p>May 6, 12 p.m. EDTTrump tamped down hopes of imminent trade deals with other countries in comments to reporters, complaining about people asking, “How many deals are you signing this week?” and suggesting his officials were misspeaking about wanting to sign deals with every country who asks—despite previously saying he would make deals with “everybody.” (flip-flop No. 12).</p><p>“I think my people haven’t made it clear, we will sign some deals,” Trump told reporters, “but much bigger than that is we’re going to put down the price that people are going to have to pay to shop in the United States. Think of us as a super luxury store, a store that has the goods.”</p><p>The president also suggested to reporters he did not feel any urgency to start negotiating with China, claiming the U.S. is “losing nothing” by not trading with Beijing and answering “no” when asked if he would bring the tariff rate on Chinese goods down in order to start negotiations.</p><p>May 6, 7 p.m. EDTShortly after Trump’s comments, however, Bessent and Greer said they would participate in discussions with Chinese officials in Switzerland over the weekend—which Beijing claims the Trump administration requested, though Trump later denied that (flip-flop No. 13).</p><p>May 8Trump announced his administration’s first trade deal—or at least the framework for one—which was made with the United Kingdom, and still leaves the 10% baseline tariff on U.K. imports in place.</p><p>May 9, 7:26 a.m. EDTTrump floated a potential 80% tariff rate on Chinese imports, writing on Truth Social, “80% Tariff on China seems right! Up to Scott B.”—after floating to reporters the day before he was now open to lowering tariffs on China, saying that if negotiations over the weekend went well, “You know [the tariff rate is] coming down” (flip-flop No. 14).</p><p>May 9, 1 p.m. EDTLeavitt told reporters Trump’s 10% tariffs on foreign goods will be permanent even after the Trump administration completes trade deals with other countries, saying the president is “determined to continue with that 10% baseline tariff.”</p><p>May 12After suggesting Sunday they had reached some kind of agreement, Bessent and Chinese officials announced Monday a 90-day pause on the worst of the two countries’ tariffs on the other’s goods, with the U.S. lowering its tariff rate on most Chinese goods to a combined 30%, which includes both the “Liberation Day” tariffs and the 20% tariffs the Trump administration had previously imposed—and is far below the 80% figure Trump floated (flip-flop No. 15).</p><p>May 16Trump suggested he will reimpose new tariff rates without completing trade deals with other countries—despite the White House claiming he would offer trade deals to “each and every country that calls up this administration to strike a deal”—telling reporters, “We have ... 150 countries that want to make a deal, but you’re not able to see that many countries” (flip-flop No. 16).</p><p>The president suggested Lutnick and Bessent will be “sending letters out” in the coming weeks to foreign governments that the administration won’t reach trade deals with, in which the Trump administration will “be telling people what they’ll be paying to do business in the United States.”</p><p>May 18Bessent told CNN the Trump administration is largely focused on negotiating with just 18 key trading partners and backtracked on Trump’s claim letters imposing new tariff rates will be sent out to other countries the Trump administration doesn’t have time to negotiate with, telling CNN and “Meet the Press” that letters will only be sent to nations who don’t negotiate in “good faith” informing them their tariffs will return to their previous April 2 rates (flip-flop No. 17).</p><p>Bessent also suggested for the first time that the Trump administration could impose blanket tariff rates on different global regions, such as central America or parts of Africa.</p><p>May 19Hassett claimed Monday to Fox Business the Trump administration has a “number of deals” on the table that could be finalized over the next two weeks, suggesting those could serve as a template for other countries’ trade deals with the U.S., and echoed Bessent in suggesting the Trump administration will reimpose its April 2 tariff rates on any countries who don’t reach deals.</p><p>May 23, 7:19 a.m. EDTAfter previously reversing his tariffs on Apple products, Trump threatened 25% tariffs on iPhones in an early morning Truth Social post, saying he will impose the tariff on Apple if its phones being sold in the U.S. are not “manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else” (flip-flop No. 18).</p><p>May 23, 7:43 a.m. EDTThe president also threatened new 50% tariffs on imports from the European Union starting June 1, writing on Truth Social that the bloc “has been very difficult to deal with” and claiming, “Our discussions with them are going nowhere!” (flip-flop No. 19).</p><p>May 23, 9:30 a.m. EDTAfter Hassett previously suggested that deals with other countries could be announced imminently in the coming weeks, Bessent offered a more pessimistic view, telling Fox News only that he expects there to be “more and more” deals announced “as we approach the end of the 90-day period,” which doesn’t expire until July (flip-flop No. 20).</p><p>May 25Following a call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump said he would postpone imposing 50% tariffs on the European Union to July 9, stating he would “rapidly get together” with European leaders to “see if we can work something out” (flip-flop No. 21).</p><p>May 28Trump was asked about criticism he’s “chicken[ed] out” by backing down from the harsher tariff rates he imposed, which the president called a “nasty question,” claiming about his decision to set high tariff rates and then lower them, “It’s called negotiations.”</p><p>“You set a number” so it will go down, Trump said, adding he thought the 145% tariff rate that was in place for Chinese imports was “high” and suggesting he set the 50% tariff rate on the EU in order to get it to the negotiating table—with Trump going on to muse that he’ll face criticism calling him “chicken” if he negotiates with Europe and gets its tariffs down to a more “reasonable” rate.</p><p>May 30Trump announced a raise on steel tariffs from 25% to 50% during an event in Pennsylvania, saying the new rate would go into effect on June 4 (flip-flop No. 22).</p><p>June 4The steel and aluminum tariff hike took effect, raising import fees on those products to 50%—except for those from the U.K., which will faces a lower 25% tariff rate thanks to the trade deal the country’s government reached with the Trump administration.</p><p>June 11Bessent testified to House lawmakers it’s “highly likely” Trump will extend his tariff pause in order to complete negotiations with trading partners, claiming the administration is prepared to “roll the date forward,” while Trump told reporters later that day he wouldn’t rule out an extension. (flip-flop No. 23)</p><p>June 27Trump said his administration can “do whatever we want” on the tariff deadline, saying, “We could extend it, we could make it shorter,” and claimed the White House would send out letters to other countries “over the next week and a half or so, or maybe before,” in which the administration is “just going to tell them what they have to pay to do business in the United States.”</p><p>June 30Bessent then suggested tariff rates for any countries who don’t reach deals could return to the initial April 2 levels, telling Bloomberg TV that other countries negotiating with the administration “should be aware that if we can"t get across the line because they are being recalcitrant, then we could spring back to the April 2 levels.”</p><p>July 2Trump announced the U.S. had reached a trade deal with Vietnam, in which goods from the country will receive a 20% tariff, with 40% for goods that pass through Vietnam from other countries like China.</p><p>July 3Bessent told Bloomberg TV there are likely to be a “flurry” of deals made before the July 9 deadline and that approximately 100 countries would receive a 10% tariff rate on their goods, which Reuters notes would be fewer than the number of countries that were slated to get 10% tariffs before the 90-day pause.</p><p>Trump told reporters he would start sending out letters Friday to other countries imposing new tariff rates, which he said would range from “maybe 60 or 70% tariffs” to “10 or 20%”—suggesting he could pose significantly higher tariff rates for some countries than what he first proposed on “Liberation Day,” when rates maxed out at 50% (flip-flop No. 24).</p><p>The president also suggested countries would have to start paying their new tariff rates on August 1 “in pretty much all cases,” rather than when the 90-day pause is set to expire July 9.</p><p>July 6Trump announced on Truth Social his administration would start sending “letters and/or deals” on tariffs to other countries starting at noon the following day, pushing back the timeline after he previously promised they would start being sent on July 4 (flip-flop No. 25).</p><p>The president also threatened additional 10% tariffs on “any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS”—referring to the bloc that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran—as the organization decried Trump’s tariffs at its summit in Brazil (flip-flop No. 26).</p><p>July 7Trump formally extended the deadline for his “Liberation Day” tariffs until Aug. 1, after sending out letters to 14 countries imposing new tariff rates starting that day if they don’t negotiate a trade deal with the Trump administration (flip-flop No. 27).</p><p>Around the time of the announcement, the president wouldn’t rule out that the deadline could be extended again, however, telling reporters that evening that the Aug. 1 date was “firm, but not 100% firm.”</p><p>July 8Trump doubled down on the Aug. 1 date and took a much stronger stance than the day before, writing on Truth Social “there will be no change” to that date and saying, “In other words, all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 - No extensions will be granted” (flip-flop No. 28).</p><p>July 11Trump suggested he could raise the baseline tariff rate on imports from countries his administration doesn’t reach specific deals with, which is at 10% now, telling NBC News, “We’re just going to say all of the remaining countries are going to pay, whether it’s 20% or 15%” (flip-flop No. 29).</p></p><p>Get Forbes Breaking News Text Alerts: We’re launching text message alerts so you"ll always know the biggest stories shaping the day’s headlines. Text “Alerts” to (201) 335-0739 or sign up here.</p>What Does ‘taco Trump’ Mean?<p>Trump’s frequent flip-flopping on tariffs—and taking rates down after the markets get spooked—has earned him the nickname of “TACO Trump” on Wall Street, which stands for “Trump always chickens out.” Trump has called the nickname “nasty” and White House spokesperson Kush Desai decried it as “asinine” in a statement to The Washington Post. The moniker and belief that Trump will back off his worst tariff threats has stuck around, however, with Deutsche Bank strategists raising their forecasts in June for the S&P 500 index based on the belief Trump has “already relented” on tariffs and there will be “further relents” in the future. The stock market had a muted response to Trump’s new round of tariff letters largely because of the president’s tendency to back off his tariff threats, Wall Street analysts suggested Tuesday, with IG Group chief market analyst Chris Beauchamp calling the latest tariff rollout a “damp squib.” “Rightly or wrongly, investors think they know what happens from here,” Beauchamp wrote. “Either negotiations result, and a ‘deal’ of some sort (usually in the vaguest terms) is announced, allowing Trump to claim a win, or a fresh extension to the deadline is announced.”</p><p></p>Crucial Quote<p>“You know, if I set a number, a ridiculous high number, and I go down a little bit, a little bit, they want me to hold that number,” Trump told reporters in May as he railed against the “TACO Trump” name and the suggestion he was “chickening out” by lowering tariff rates. Referring to the 145% tariff rate previously in place on Chinese goods, Trump continued, “You know, 145% tariff, even I said, ‘Man, that really got up … Whoa, that’s high. That’s high.’”</p>Can The Courts Stop Trump’s Tariffs?<p>Two courts have already ruled that Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs are unlawful and the president exceeded his authority by imposing them. The tariffs remain in place, however, as appeals courts then put those rulings on hold while the litigation plays out. The appeals court is scheduled to hold oral arguments on July 31 on the most sweeping lawsuit over the tariffs, so there won’t be any changes to the tariffs’ legality before that date. Plaintiffs in one of the lawsuits over the tariffs asked the Supreme Court to take up the issue on an urgent timeline, requesting that justices hear oral arguments over the tariffs’ legality as soon as their next term begins, or even sooner. The court rejected that request, however, so while it’s still possible the Supreme Court will ultimately decide whether Trump’s tariffs are legal, they won’t be doing so within the coming months.</p>What We Don’t Know: Will There Be More Tariff Changes?<p>It’s ultimately still unclear what the tariff rates will look like when the extended pause ends on Aug. 1—even for countries that receive letters from the Trump administration imposing new tariff rates, as the president wrote in the letters that their rates are subject to change “depending on our relationship with your Country.” Many of the countries that Trump targeted have vowed to continue negotiations in hopes of securing a better rate before Aug. 1. The trade deals also aren’t expected to completely get rid of tariffs on any country, as Lutnick claimed after the trade deal with the U.K. was announced that for countries that have trade deficits with the U.S., “The best they can do is 10%—most likely they’ll be higher.” While Trump has threatened tariffs on iPhones and EU goods, it remains to be seen if those will take effect and how long they’ll stay in effect, and whether more goods could be either tariffed or exempted from the tariffs. No tariffs have yet been imposed on critical imports like semiconductors, as Lutnick and Trump claimed would be implemented, but they still could impose them in the future. Democratic lawmakers have asked the Trump administration to exempt baby products from its tariffs, which Bessent testified was “under consideration.” </p>Chief Critic<p>Democrats have decried the constant changes in Trump’s tariff policy, which they argue further harm the economy. “The White House has no idea what it’s doing on tariffs and keeps flip flopping. Lutnick now says the tariff exemptions on, for example iPhones, are temporary. Why even do an exemption if you’re going to reverse it soon?” Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., said on X on April 13. “The White House “has no strategy, and is rapidly losing credibility.”</p>Key Background<p>Trump has long touted tariffs as a cornerstone of his policy agenda, making them a centerpiece of his campaign and repeatedly pledging to put them in effect. (Photo by Anna Moneymaker)</p></fbs-accordion><small>Getty Images</small></p>Key Facts<p><p>The bill introduces a new $250 “visa integrity fee” for most non-immigrant U.S. visas, including tourist, student and work visas, beginning in 2026.</p><p>The new fee, added to the bill by Republican lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee, is one of 22 immigration fees in the bill designed “to encourage lawful conduct among foreign nationals visiting the United States,” but critics, including U.S. tourism officials, say it will result in fewer international visitors to the United States. </p><p>“Raising fees on lawful international visitors amounts to a self-imposed tariff on one of our nation’s largest exports: international travel spending,” Geoff Freeman, president of the U.S. Travel Association (USTA) said in a statement.</p><p>The House Judiciary Committee press office did not immediately reply to Forbes’ request for comment on the USTA’s claims.</p><p>The Trump administration is also considering significantly expanding the 12-country travel ban to more than four dozen countries, World Cup host cities in the United States that were banking on filling half their stadiums and hotels with foreign visitors could lose big.</p></p>Why Do U.s. Tourism Officials Say The Visa Integrity Fee Is A Bad Idea?<p>U.S. tourism officials argue that anything that makes it more difficult or expensive to visit the United States can be a deterrent to large numbers of visitors. International visitors spent $254 billion on U.S. travel and tourism-related goods and services in 2024, according to the International Trade Administration. But a recent study from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) that analyzed the economic impact of tourism in 184 countries revealed the U.S. was the only country forecast to see international visitor spending decline in 2025. “While other nations are rolling out the welcome mat, the U.S. government is putting up the ‘closed’ sign,” Julia Simpson, president and CEO of WTTC, said in a statement. As a result, the U.S. tourism industry is on track to miss out on $29 billion in tourism revenue this year. The new visa integrity fee will add $250 to a tourist’s travel bill. “These fees are not reinvested in improving the travel experience and do nothing but discourage visitation at a time when foreign travelers are already concerned about the welcome experience and high prices,” Freeman, the USTA president said, in his statement.</p>Will The United States’ New Visa Integrity Fee Be Refundable?<p>It appears that some travelers will be able to get reimbursed. The bill states that U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem “may provide a reimbursement to an alien of the fee required ... if such alien demonstrates that he or she ... complied with all conditions of such nonimmigrant visa.” The conditions listed include not accepting employment while in the U.S.; not extending the length the stay; or being granted an extension of stay. But the text of the bill does not spell out how onerous the reimbursement process will be for a tourist wishing to reclaim the $250 fee.</p>What Else In The Big Beautiful Bill Could Negatively Impact Us Tourism In 2026?<p>The bill includes $4.1 billion to hire and train at least 5,000 new U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers and $2 billion in CBP retention bonuses to address staffing shortages at the agency. In his statement, Freeman characterized this as a win, saying additional CBP staff will “help lower wait times at airports and improve the traveler experience.” But it’s also possible that more CBP officers may have the exact opposite effect. “I think increasingly, whether there"s validity to it or not, we have to acknowledge these headlines around the world of people being detained, of their devices being searched, stories of deportation—it’s causing a degree of fear,” Freeman told Forbes in April when discussing the significant drop in Canadian visitation, adding, “And in the absence of effective communication to explain what CBP is doing, what US policy is the fact that we want you to come we"ve allowed this negative publicity to run rampant.”</p>How Much Tourism Revenue Is At Stake For World Cup 2026?<p>In March, FIFA projected the World Cup 2026 will drive $30.5 billion in economic output in the U.S., according to an analysis by OpenEconomics (OE). But that number was predicated on the assumption the U.S. will see an “influx of visitors” from foreign countries to fill stadiums and hotels. FIFA has told World Cup host cities to expect a 50/50 split between domestic and international visitors, multiple host city tourism officials told Forbes. Philadelphia expects the six matches it hosts next summer to draw 500,000 visitors and fill more than 100,000 hotel rooms to the tune of $305 million in direct tourism spending and $770 million in total economic impact, Meg Kane, chief executive of Philadelphia’s World Cup organizing committee, told Forbes in June. Kansas City—which is hosting four group stage matches, a round of 32, and then a quarter final—is expecting to draw 650,000 visitors over the course of the tournament and an estimated $653 million in direct event impact, Pam Kramer, chief executive officer of KC2026, the nonprofit organization leading the city’s World Cup planning, told Forbes. </p><p></p>Why Is Trump’s Relationship With Fifa Controversial?<p>On Monday, FIFA announced it is a tenant in Manhattan’s Trump Tower, seen by Trump critics as an example of the sitting U.S. president co-mingling his role as head of state with his business interests. “On behalf of myself, on behalf of New York, on behalf of the Trump Organization and everybody that works in this building – we love you,” Eric Trump said in remarks at a public relations event attended by former Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo. FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s coziness with Trump has drawn criticism from international soccer organizations. In 2023, four films were released as part of the DC Extended Universe, three of which—”Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” “The Flash” and “Blue Beetle”—just barely outgrossed their budget costs. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” released in December 2023, grossed $439 million worldwide, more than double its reported budget, but the total is less than half of the billion dollars grossed by its 2018 predecessor, “Aquaman.” “Joker: Folie à Deux” —which is not part of the DCEU but is based on DC characters—also bombed at the box office in 2024, grossing about one-fifth of the billion dollars “Joker” made in 2019. Most of these films also received middling reviews: the “Aquaman” sequel has just a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, while “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” scored a 49%. Scandals also plagued the DCEU, including “The Flash” star Ezra Miller’s string of erratic behavior and charges for harassment and disorderly conduct, as well as the resignation of Warner Bros.’ film studio chief Kevin Tsujihara in 2019 amid a sexual harassment scandal. Some analysts have also suggested both DC and Marvel have suffered from “superhero fatigue” in recent years, which prompted Marvel to pare back the number of releases it puts out each year and focus on quality.</p>How Is “superman” A Reboot For Dc?<p>“Superman” marks the launch of the DC Universe, created by James Gunn and Peter Safran, who serve as the co-CEOs of DC Studios. Gunn, who directed DC’s “The Suicide Squad” and multiple Marvel Cinematic Univese films, is the writer and director of “Superman.” Gunn said in 2022 they had begun mapping out an “eight to 10-year plan of what it’s going to look like in theater, in TV, in animation, across the board for these characters.” The rebooted franchise features David Corenswet playing the titular superhero, taking the role from Henry Cavill, who starred in multiple DCEU movies. Future films planned for the DCU include “Supergirl,” set for release in 2026, and “Clayface,” a horror film based on a villain from Batman comics.</p>Why Is “superman” Facing Right-Wing Backlash?<p>Some right-wing critics derided the film after Gunn likened Superman to an immigrant in an interview with The Sunday Times. A survey sent to residents about the money showed that 42% of the 180 respondents wanted to reject the $10 million grant altogether, according to the Tribune. Local taxpayers didn"t want to be beholden to the Biden administration, with one resident telling Kerr County commissioners, "We don"t want to be bought by the federal government, thank you very much. We"d like the federal government to stay out of Kerr County and their money,” the Tribune reported. Another resident asked the commissioners to send all of the money "back to the Biden administration, which I consider to be the most criminal treasonous communist government ever to hold the White House."</p><p></p>Key Background<p>Rapid rainfall hit central Texas on July 4, pushing Guadalupe River levels more than 32 feet and devastating nearby communities. The rising waters made for the deadliest inland flooding event in Texas in almost 50 years, and the death toll as of Friday accounted for at least 120 people with another 160 still missing. Among the victims are at least 35 children. At least 27 people, including children and counselors, died at a generations-old, all-girls Christian summer camp called Camp Mystic, where former First Lady Barbara Bush was once a counselor. It’s unclear how many people could have been saved if Kerr County had a flood warning system, but Texas Lt. Gov. Santiago/Getty Images)</p></fbs-accordion><small>Getty Images</small></p>Key Facts<p><p>Mahmood Mamdani’s academic work has become a target for critics of Zohran Mamdani, including by Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire, who has spurred controversy this week for calling the Mamdanis “Islamists.”</p><p>A screenshot of an excerpt from Mahmood Mamdani’s 2004 book, “Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War, and the Roots of Terror,” circulated social media this week, reposted by critics including Maguire and billionaire Bill Ackman, which Maguire says depicts Mamdani justifying suicide bombing.</p><p>In the screenshot, Mamdani urges readers to recognize suicide bombers “as a category of soldier” and that suicide bombing should be “understood as a feature of modern political violence rather than stigmatized as a mark of barbarism.”</p><p>But in the text, Mamdani analyzes the causes of suicide bombing and does not advocate for it, says Nathan Lean, professor of religious studies at North Carolina State University, who told Forbes he has read the book and assigns it in classes he teaches on Islam.</p><p>Maguire also claimed in multiple tweets Mamdani’s book “blames 9/11 on America,” which Lean, who specializes in Islam in American culture and has written books on Islamophobia, also said is not true. </p><p>Mamdani’s book is “not simplistic and not accusatory,” Lean said, and instead examines how “U.S. foreign policy decisions, especially during the Cold War, helped create the kinds of conditions in which militant Islamism and political violence” was perpetrated by groups like al-Qaeda.</p><p>Tazeen Ali, a religious studies professor at Washington University in St. Louis who specializes in Islam in the United States, called Maguire’s claims “serious mischaracterizations” of Mamdani’s work, adding Mamdani’s arguments are “not controversial” in academia and his work is “taught widely in undergraduate courses.” </p></p>Crucial Quote<p>“Nowhere in [Mamdani’s] writing has he advocated for suicide bombing. Nowhere in his writing has he advocated for violence. He’s asking us to take a step back and look at it in terms of its causes, in terms of its impact, in terms of its consequences,” Lean told Forbes.</p>What Did Maguire Say About Zohran Mamdani?<p>Maguire sparked controversy earlier this week by targeting Zohran Mamdani and his father across dozens of social media posts, in some calling them “Islamists.” Maguire criticized Mamdani, who is of Indian descent and was born in Uganda, for labeling himself “Asian” and “Black or African American” on a college application, stating Mamdani “comes from a culture that lies about everything” to advance an “Islamist agenda.” Maguire’s comments generated backlash among tech founders and CEOs, with more than 1,125 founders representing 1,045 startups signing an open letter slamming his remarks as “hate speech and anti‑Muslim bigotry.” The letter demanded Sequoia denounce Maguire’s comments and investigate his conduct, implement a zero-tolerance policy on religious bigotry and issue an apology to Mamdani and the Muslim tech founder community. Then a second open letter, this one backing Maguire and calling his remarks “the reflections of a principled thinker and a partner to countless founders who span geographies, faiths, and political beliefs,” garnered more than 350 signatures. </p>Key Background<p>Mahmood Mamdani is a professor in Columbia’s anthropology department, in which he teaches courses on African politics, colonialism and the Cold War. Photographer: Gabby Jones/Bloomberg</p></fbs-accordion><small>© 2025 Bloomberg Finance LP</small></p>Key Facts<p><p>Trump and his family control about 40% of World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance platform launched in September 2024 that is building a blockchain-based protocol.</p><p>On Oct. 15, 2024, World Liberty Financial began selling $WLFI, a crypto token that doesn’t convey ownership in the privately held company but gives holders voting rights on certain matters concerning the protocol, and at launch the tokens were nontransferable. </p><p>An SEC filing made at the end of that month revealed World Liberty Financial sold $2.7 million worth of tokens to 348 accredited investors, with plans to sell no more than $30 million overall—keeping all proceeds inside the company with none flowing to Trump or other founders.</p><p>But World Liberty Financial disclosed in an SEC filing last week (first flagged by independent journalist Wendy Siegelman) that it sold another $52.1 million of tokens to 1,966 investors—this time distributing $50.7 million to Trump and other founders, rather than retaining all proceeds within the company as in its initial sale.</p><p>If distributed according to current ownership stakes, the July payout could have netted the Trump family around $20 million—though the filings don’t break out individual distributions, and Alan Palmiter, a professor at Wake Forest University who specializes in securities regulation, told Forbes he’s not aware of any requirement that payments be proportionate to equity stake.</p><p>World Liberty Financial declined to comment, and the Trump Organization did not respond to an inquiry.</p></p>What We Don’t Know<p>While World Liberty Financial acknowledged in its latest SEC filing that it sold tokens ”to non-US persons” in a separate sale, it did not reveal how much they paid or who they were, saying such details weren’t required under U.S. securities laws.</p>What To Watch For<p>On Wednesday, World Liberty Financial asked tokenholders to approve a plan that would let some tokens become transferable, with voting scheduled to close on July 16. Under the proposal, tokens held by founders, team members and advisors—including Trump—would stay locked at first and “be subject to a longer unlock schedule than early supporters.’</p>Contra<p>White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly responded to questions about the deal by saying, “President Trump is dedicated to making America the crypto capital of the world and revolutionizing our digital financial technology,” adding, “his assets are in a trust managed by his children, and there are no conflicts of interest.” An ethics white paper the Trump Organization released in January noted the Constitution does not bar a president from owning, operating or managing a private business. But to “avoid even the appearance of any conflict,” the company said it hired an outside ethics adviser and Trump would keep his assets in a trust and not manage the company directly. The Trump Organization, however, later fired that adviser at Trump’s instruction. </p><p></p>Key Background<p>Trump can earn income from his businesses while in office through the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, the same vehicle he used during his first term. He is its sole donor and beneficiary, while Donald Trump Jr. serves as the trustee. The Trump Organization confirmed in an April regulatory filing in the United Kingdom that Trump retains control over his businesses. As president, he has pledged to make the United States the “crypto capital of the world,” aligning with his expanding investments in digital assets. World Liberty Financial initially allocated 22.5 billion of its 100 billion $WLFI tokens to Trump and family members. Another 35 billion were offered for sale, while the rest were split among other founders, employees and a reserve for community incentives. The Trumps’ ownership stake in the company was around 75% at the end of December, dropped to roughly 60% by late January and still appeared at that level on World Liberty Financial’s website as of June 8, before being updated to about 40%—though it’s unclear exactly when or why the reductions took place. World Liberty Financial’s other main product is the USD1 stablecoin, a crypto currency pegged to the U.S. dollar and backed by Treasuries and cash equivalents.</p>Big Number<p>$57.4 million: Trump’s income from World Liberty Financial, according to a financial disclosure released in June, which appears to cover roughly a 12-month period ending in December 2024.</p>Surprising Fact<p>World Liberty Financial’s investor count surged from 348 last fall to nearly 2,000 by mid-2025—an unusually large pool for a private placement that Marcus Walter, a partner at the law firm Caldwell, told Forbes looks “more akin to a mini-IPO,” potentially raising compliance hurdles.</p>News Peg<p>In June, the Senate passed the Genius Act, a crypto industry-backed bill that would create new rules for stablecoins like World Liberty Financial’s USD1. The House could vote on it as early as next week, reported Punchbowl News. Meanwhile, in response to Trump’s crypto ventures, Sen. 3206253	无图 <p>Topline<p>President Donald Trump announced Saturday his administration is imposing 30% tariffs on imports from the European Union and Mexico, hiking up the tariff rate for two of the U.S.’s biggest trading partners despite lengthy negotiations.</p><p></p><fbs-accordion><p>President Donald Trump listens as African leaders deliver remarks at the White House on July 9.</p></fbs-accordion><small>Getty Images</small></p>Key Facts<p><p>Trump posted two letters Saturday morning to his Truth Social account, which were addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, informing them the Trump administration is imposing a 30% tariff rate on their imports.</p><p>The tariffs are slated to kick in on Aug. 1, and do not include any separate tariffs on specific sectors, like steel or automobiles.</p><p>The 30% rate on the EU is unexpected, as reports suggest the bloc had been in the process of negotiating a deal with the Trump administration in which they would have kept the existing 10% tariff rate in place, and European officials believed they would not receive a letter imposing a new tariff rate on them, as other countries had.</p><p>Trump’s letter to Mexico cited the country’s failure to deal with the flow of fentanyl from its drug cartels into the U.S., with Trump writing, “Mexico has been helping me secure the border, BUT, what Mexico has done, is not enough.”</p><p>It’s unclear if the 30% rate could change before Aug. 1: Trump’s letter threatens his administration will raise the tariff rate further if either the EU or Mexico decides to retaliate, and both countries are likely to pursue further negotiations with the Trump administration before the Aug. 1 deadline.</p><p>Trump suggests he could also lower the 30% tariff rate if they get rid of their trade barriers for U.S. imports—or, in Mexico’s case, completely stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.</p></p>How Have The Countries Responded?<p>Mexico has not yet responded to Trump’s new tariff rates, but von der Leyen hit back at the tariffs in a statement Saturday, saying the 30% tariff rate would “disrupt essential transatlantic supply chains, to the detriment of businesses, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic.” The European official did not announce any specific retaliatory measures the bloc could take in response, but said that while the EU will “continue working toward an agreement by August 1,” the bloc “will take all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required.”</p>What Goods Will These Tariffs Affect?<p>The EU exported $605.8 billion worth of goods to the U.S. in 2024, and European nations collectively have been the U.S.’ biggest trading partner. The bloc’s biggest exports to the U.S. that are likely to be impacted by the tariffs are machinery, electrical equipment, electronics, various optical, photo and medical equipment, aircraft, plastics, beverages and cosmetics. The EU’s single biggest export to the U.S. in 2024 was pharmaceuticals, but Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs exempts those—though the president has floated imposing a 200% tariff on the sector, which would be separate from the 30% rate imposed Saturday. Mexico is also one of the U.S.’s biggest trading partners, exporting $505.9 billion worth of goods to the U.S. in 2024. The country’s biggest exports to the U.S. include automobiles and automobile parts, electronics, machinery, agricultural products, petroleum and medical instruments. Trump has separate tariffs for automobiles, however, and it’s unclear which goods will ultimately be affected by the 30% tariff rate, as Trump’s current tariffs on Mexico exempt products covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, such as avocados, other produce, rubber and plastics. Trump officials have suggested Trump’s new 35% tariff rate on Canada will exempt goods covered by the agreement, but the administration has not yet specified how the tariff on Mexican goods will apply.</p>Key Background<p>Trump’s letters to the EU and Mexico are part of a new wave of notices the Trump administration has been sending out to its trading partners in recent days, also imposing new tariff rates on such major countries as Japan, South Korea, Canada and Brazil. Trump initially paused his “Liberation Day” tariffs—which imposed sweeping tariffs on nearly all countries—for 90 days after they briefly took effect in April and caused the stock market to plunge. While Trump officials promised they would use the pause to reach trade deals, vowing to reach “90 deals in 90 days,” the administration has so far only announced formal trade deals with the U.K., Vietnam and China. As a result, Trump instead decided to just send letters to trading partners that unilaterally set new tariff rates, sending out his first letters Monday after suggesting for weeks he intended to imminently start imposing new rates. More Capitol on June 23 in Washington, DC.</p></fbs-accordion><small>Getty Images</small></p>Key Facts<p><p>Bondi fired at least nine DOJ employees who worked on the criminal cases against Trump in recent days, The New York Times and Reuters report citing anonymous sources, while Axios reports the attorney general fired more than 20 people.</p><p>The firings came out of Bondi’s “Weaponization Working Group,” according to Axios, which the agency has described as an effort to root out “abuses of the criminal justice process,” but has also been criticized as a way for the DOJ to carry out retribution against Trump’s perceived enemies.</p><p>Prosecutors who worked with Special Counsel Jack Smith on the criminal cases were fired, along with support staff who provided logistical help on the investigations, which the Times reports marks the first time that support employees on the criminal cases are believed to have lost their jobs.</p><p>The DOJ previously fired approximately 15 prosecutors from the cases in January, before Bondi was confirmed as attorney general, and Reuters reported two more employees were fired in June.</p><p>That brings the total number of fired employees who were involved with the criminal cases to at least 26, per Reuters’ count, while Axios pegs the number at 35.</p><p>The Justice Department has not yet responded to a request for comment.</p></p>What To Watch For: More Firings<p>An additional 15 employees are still working at the DOJ but could still be fired, according to Axios, as the administration continues its investigation into whether they’re perceived enemies of the president. “We"re reviewing and making sure,” an anonymous administration official told Axios. “Some of these people were burrowed deep, and we"re finding them and making a determination.”</p>Tangent<p>The terminations come as Bondi herself has come under fire, after the DOJ said in a memo Monday that it would not release any further information on its investigation into disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein and denied the existence of any “list” detailing Epstein’s associates. The government’s refusal to disclose further information about the Epstein case has provoked an outcry from many of Trump’s supporters, with key right-wing figures like Megyn Kelly, Glenn Beck and Laura Loomer calling for Bondi to be fired or resign. “Pam Bondi should resign—not because of a cover-up, but for incompetence,” Beck wrote on X on Tuesday, while Loomer has dubbed Bondi “Scam Blondi” and claimed the attorney general is “harming Trump’s administration and she’s embarrassing all of his staff and advisors by creating a PR crisis for them.” The outcry over the DOJ’s handling of the Epstein case prompted Bondi to delay firing the employees tied to Trump’s criminal cases, Axios reports, which were initially supposed to take place earlier this week.</p>Key Background<p>The Biden-era DOJ brought two criminal cases against Trump, one for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and another for allegedly withholding classified documents. In effect, the Prime Day sales event has become a virtual discounters’ arms race, with retailers locked in fierce competition to attract consumers’ attention and spending. Adobe observed that many of this year’s discounts were better than last year. For example, apparel was discounted an average of 24% from list price compared to 20% last year, toys were off 19% (vs. 15%), and appliances discounted 17% (vs. 14%). </p>Crucial Quote<p>“The big story this year? The sheer excessiveness of it all. The unprecedented 4-day length, overlapping retailer events, massive deal depths, and deals dominating search results,” said Tristan Williams, Envision Horizons. “Prime Day has evolved from a shopping event into a shopping season.”</p>What To Watch For<p>Sales promotions are a double-edged sword for retailers: they can drive increased traffic and sales, but at the cost of thinner margins and lower profits. Thatunlikely to be enough for Google to surpass Algolia — or faster-growing AI rivals such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. </p></p><p>Google shares have lost value in 2025. That’s because the search giant — which developed the core transformer concept underlying generative AI, according to my book, Brain Rush — is struggling to catch up with ChatGPT and others when it comes to commercializing its idea.</p><p>Is the drop in Google stock a buying opportunity? The answer depends on whether Google can keep its search business relevant. “The market will need to see fundamental evidence that Google search is indeed going to be more durable than currently appreciated,” Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak wrote in a report featured by Investor’s Business Daily. </p><p>If rivals such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Meta AI better deploy generative AI to cash in on advertising and improved e-commerce and travel verticals, Google’s stock could keep dropping, noted Nowak.</p><p>For Google bulls, I have bad news: Algolia — which says it is deploying agentic AI for brands — is ahead of Google in those two search and product discovery verticals.</p><p></p><p>In 2018, I was surprised to learn Google had abandoned the business of helping consumers search through a company"s online product catalog, according to my October 2018 Forbes post.</p><p>Google was good at bringing users to a website but once there, customers relied on the websites’ own search functions to find products. Some companies "build their own engines; others use open-source software, such as Elasticsearch,” the Economist reported.</p><p>At the time, Algolia — founded in Paris in 2012 — was rapidly taking a piece of that pie by supplying a service that "hunts the client’s website and swiftly offers consumers relevant results," added the Economist.</p><p>Since then, Google has entered this market and this year was deemed a leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for vision and ability to execute. However, within that elite group of leaders, Algolia is the top dog.</p><p>Read on for why this market is significant and why I do not think Google is doing enough to overtake Algolia and larger rivals in monetizing AI.</p><p>I requested comment from Google and will update this post if I receive a reply.</p>Digital Commerce Search Industry Revenue Growth And Growth Drivers<p>While analysts use many ways to describe the digital commerce search industry, they agree the industry is growing fast and will become far larger in the next decade. </p><p>The industry’s goal is to understand consumers’ needs and recommend products that best satisfy those needs. AI is the most significant growth propellent for this business in year — it enhances consumer experiences, increase sales, and boosts engagement, according to SuperAGI. </p><p>AI-driven recommendation engines can increase customer loyalty, average order size and the lifetime value of a customer. For example, 71% of consumers are more likely to return to a website offering personalized experiences. Moreover, such systems suggest complementary products — thereby increasing average order value by 10% to 15%, reported SuperAGI.</p>Algolia’s Strategy, Performance, And Prospects<p>Algolia appears to be riding this growth wave. The company provides an AI-native search and discovery platform to enable brands such as PetSmart, Best Buy, Chewy, Twitch, Stripe, and Under Armour to deliver fast, relevant, and personalized search experiences, according to an Algolia release. </p><p>Algolia’s search-as-a-service solution uses AI recommendations, NeuralSearch, and real-time personalization to boosts user engagement and increase conversion rates, the release added.</p><p>Algolia has added many customers in the last five years. “When I joined Algolia we had less than 7,000 customers, now we have 18,000,” Nixon — who joined the company in 2020 — told me. “We process two billion transactions per year and have millions of developers on our platform.”</p><p>Algolia’s growth can be attributed to its ability to satisfy e-commerce search customers’ need for reliable performance at scale. “We provide five nine’s reliability which means only 26 seconds of downtime per month,” she said. “Reliability is really important and it is difficult to do when operating at scale.”</p><p>Algolia has repeatedly introduced meaningful innovations. “We disrupted the market three times and we are about to do it a fourth,” Nixon explained. </p><p>Instead of relying on preexisting search software such as Lucene, Algolia’s search was built from scratch to work on mobile. </p><p>Next, the company introduced search as a service and charged customers based on the number of searches — with the price per search declining with the number of searches. </p><p>Finally, in 2023, Algolia introduced hybrid search — “combining keyword and natural language search incorporating large language models,” she told me.</p><p>Algolia is most excited about agentic AI — which will enable consumers to take action towards a goal. The company uses Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol — which allows AI agents to access Algolia"s search, analytics, recommendations, and index configuration APIs.</p><p>“AI agents must be able to work across walled gardens to traverse a company’s back-end seamlessly to retrieve data,” she said. “To that end, we have partnered with Salesforce Commerce Cloud and Adobe Experience Manager.”</p><p>Nixon is also excited about how much consumers’ use of ChatGPT to search for products is adding to e-commerce providers’ web traffic. “Adobe Analytics has found generative AI is giving retailers and banks 1,200% traffic increases while travel sites are seeing 1,700% increases,” she told me. “When people come to a retailer’s site they bounce 23% less frequently and look at 12% more pages per visit.”</p><p>Algolia also provides personalized digital shopping guides — say, for Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day — targeted towards various lifestyles. “In beta test, we have 73 shopping guides already,” she concluded.</p>Google’s Product Search Strategy, Performance And Prospects<p>Google"s offerings — notably Google Ads and Vertex AI Search for Commerce— can boost retailer revenues in three ways:</p>Driving traffic and sales via ads. Google Ads increase brand revenue through ads on Google Search and YouTube aimed at specific audiences and keywords, according to a Google release.Enhancing discovery and personalization. Google Vertex AI Search for Commerce engages with consumers in real-time back and forth conversation using Gemini models and deploys image or text-and-image search to match recommendations to each consumer’s search and purchase behavior, Nimstrata wrote.Measuring ad effectiveness: Google Brand Lift and Search Lift tools allow retailers to measure brand awareness, consideration, and user search behavior to optimize ad budgets, LYFE Marketing noted.What Gartner’s Magic Quadrant Says About Algolia And Google<p>In July 2025, Gartner ranked Google and Algolia as Magic Quadrant for Search and Product Discovery leaders based on their completeness of vision and ability to execute.</p><p>Algolia is the leader among leaders — prevailing over Google. Algolia is proud of Gartner’s recognition. “This is the second year we have been a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Search and Product Discovery,” Nixon told me.</p><p>“We are up and to the right in the leader box which makes us the best in the industry for completeness of vision and ability to execute. How? We want to make search easy for the masses. We wanted to be scalable in the enterprise. We solve the search puzzle for the masses.”</p><p>Google was happy to be an MQ leader. “We believe this recognition affirms Google’s evolving commitment to delivering high ROI-generating product discovery, through the use of AI in relevance, ranking, and personalization,” noted Google Cloud AI Director, Product Management Sachin Padwal in a July 8 company release.</p>Will Google Prevail Over Algolia In Agentic Ai?<p>Algolia is ahead of Google in applying agentic AI for search and product discovery. While Google has not yet launched such a service, on July 11 the search giant acquired executive talent and intellectual property from Windsurf — a leader in agentic AI, noted CNBC.</p><p>Algolia’s MCP Server — launched in June 2025 — enables LLMs and autonomous agents to work together to help consumers buy what they need more quickly. </p><p>For example, Algolia’s agentic AI service can help consumers book a Mediterranean cruise. By retrieving relevant consumer information from platforms such as Adobe and Salesforce. For example, Algolia agentic AI service can recommend and book a cruise based on each guest’s chosen destinations, travel history, and other preferences — in milliseconds, according to a company release.</p><p>“This isn’t about showing off what agents could do,” Nixon said. “It’s about showing what they can do right now with a powerful user experience, if they have the right layer of intelligence underneath. That’s where Algolia fits.” </p><p>Meanwhile, Google is currently experimenting with agentic AI for travel. (Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images)</p></fbs-accordion><small>Getty Images</small></p>Timeline<p><p>Feb. 27At a press event featuring MAGA influencers and podcasters, Bondi handed out binders full of what her office called “declassified” Epstein records but also admitted most of them had been “previously leaked but never released in a formal capacity”—and backlash quickly began growing as observers realized the files contained no new names or revelations.</p><p>Feb. 28Shortly after the “Epstein Files: Phase 1” event, Bondi said the FBI failed to disclose “thousands of pages of documents related to the investigation and indictment of Epstein,” and asked FBI Director Kash Patel to deliver the remaining “records, documents, audio and video recordings, and materials related to Jeffrey Epstein and his clients, regardless of how such information was obtained.”</p><p>March 14Pam Bondi gave an interview to Fox News, answering a question about a so-called Epstein client list by saying it was “sitting on my desk right now”—Bondi and the White House have since claimed the attorney general was referring to the entire tranche of documents related to the Epstein prosecution.</p><p>June 5The feud between Trump and former ally Elon Musk heats up, as the billionaire Tesla chief and former leader of the Department of Government Efficiency accused the president of being implicated in the “Epstein Files.”</p><p>July 7The Justice Department quietly releases a memo determining Epstein committed suicide in his jail cell in August 2019, as well as dashing any hopes that a “client list” exists in the thousands of pages of documents.</p><p>The memo also contains a link to about 11 hours of footage of Epstein in his cell released as proof of his suicide—which quickly faced more scrutiny after viewers realized about a minute of footage was missing.</p><p>The memo sparked widespread backlash among Trump’s base, as top conservative commentators called for Bondi to resign or be fired, and right-wing commentator Laura Loomer claimed Patel and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino are “LIVID” with Bondi over the memo and her “lack of transparency” regarding the “Epstein Files.”</p><p>July 8Trump begins lashing out as reporters continue to press Bondi on the release, calling one reporter’s question about the disgraced financier a “desecration” while other tragedies, such as the deadly flooding in the Texas Hill Country, were ongoing.</p><p>July 11Multiple outlets reported Bongino, a former podcaster and MAGA influencer before his appointment to deputy FBI director, might resign over how the Epstein release was handled, with CNN reporting he clashed with Bondi.</p><p>July 12Patel wrote on X the “conspiracy theories just aren’t true, never have been” and vowed his commitment to remaining in the Trump administration, writing, “It’s an honor to serve the President of the United States @realDonaldTrump — and I’ll continue to do so for as long as he calls on me.”</p><p>July 12Trump doubles down on the criticism of MAGA influencers and reporters questioning the lack of answers from the administration’s Epstein probe, praising Bondi for doing a “FANTASTIC JOB” and pushing the Justice Department to investigate controversies he has harped on for years: the Hunter Biden laptop, Democratic campaign fundraising site ActBlue, and questioning the results of the 2020 presidential election.</p></p>What Is Happening Between Patel And Bondi?<p>Patel’s post Saturday came amid multiple reports that Patel and Bongino had butted heads with Bondi over the DOJ’s memo Monday saying the agency will not release further documents on Epstein, which also said an Epstein “client list” does not exist and asserted the financier died by suicide in 2019. CNN reports Patel was involved in a meeting this week with Bongino and Bondi over the “major clash” between the FBI and DOJ over how to handle the Epstein documents. It’s unclear whether Patel’s reference to “conspiracy theories” in his post Saturday referred to the allegations of infighting between the DOJ and FBI, or to the conspiracy theories regarding Epstein, which Patel repeatedly pushed himself before joining the FBI. Patel’s comments follow Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche claiming Friday Patel and Bongino had personally signed off on the Epstein memo, writing, “The suggestion by anyone that there was any daylight between the FBI and DOJ leadership on this memo’s composition and release is patently false.”</p>What To Watch For<p>It’s still unclear whether Bongino will resign from the FBI as he’s reportedly considering, with sources telling CNN on Friday the deputy director had ultimately not made up his mind. It also remains to be seen what will happen with Bondi, as Trump’s base revolts against the attorney general. Trump—who knew Epstein but has not been accused of any wrongdoing in connection to him—has not expressed any desire to fire Bondi in recent days and has downplayed the “Epstein Files,” saying it was “unbelievable” that reporters asked about the issue during his Cabinet meeting Tuesday. “I mean, I can’t believe you’re asking a question on Epstein at a time like this, where we’re having some of the greatest success and also tragedy with what happened in Texas,” Trump told reporters. “It just seems like a desecration.” </p><p></p>Tangent<p>Bondi appeared to try and curry favor with figures on the far-right Saturday, announcing the DOJ was dropping charges against a plastic surgeon accused of fraud in connection to COVID-19 vaccines. The attorney general singled out Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., for pushing for the doctor’s freedom, with Bondi saying the dismissal “would not have been possible” without Greene and praising her as “a warrior for Dr. Moore and for ending the weaponization of government.” Greene has publicly criticized the DOJ’s Epstein memo in recent days and continued to call for documents to be released, sharing allegations that the documents were being “suppressed” on Thursday and writing, “RELEASE THE EPSTEIN CLIENT LIST!!!!” The attorney general also fired several of the president’s perceived enemies this week, including at least nine prosecutors and other employees who were involved with federal criminal cases against Trump.</p>What Has Kash Patel Said About Epstein?<p>Prior to joining the Trump administration, Patel repeatedly pushed for the Epstein files to be publicly released and criticized the government for withholding documents, claiming in a December 2023 podcast appearance that the Biden administration was withholding documents “because of who’s on that list.” “You don’t think that Bill Gates is lobbying Congress night and day to prevent the disclosure of that list?” Patel said, adding, “Put on your big boy pants, and let us know who the pedophiles are.” The FBI director took a different tone in May, however, when Patel and Bongino—who also previously pushed conspiracy theories related to Epstein—rebutted the theory that Epstein was murdered in prison, saying in an interview they confirmed the financier died by suicide. “Listen, they have a right to their opinion,” Patel told FOX Business host Maria Bartiromo about those who believe the conspiracy theory, “but as someone who has worked as a public defender, as a prosecutor who’s been in that prison system, who’s been in the Metropolitan Detention Center, who’s been in segregated housing, um, you know a suicide when you see one, and that’s what that was.” The FBI director still suggested he wanted the government to release its files on the Epstein case, however, telling Fox News in May, “We are diligently working on that” but “it takes time to go through years of investigations.”</p>Key Background<p>Epstein allegedly abused more than 100 women between 2002 and 2018, assembling an alleged network of underage women who were allegedly abused by him and associates. He was indicted in federal court in 2019 for sex trafficking and died in prison later that year. The financier’s crimes have continued to garner widespread attention, particularly due to his links to numerous well-known figures like Trump, Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew, and many following the case have hoped for documents like a “client list” that would detail Epstein’s connections—even as there’s no indication such a list exists. He made several carries, and tackled strongly, he received kick-offs well and packed down at flanker because Jasper Wiese was red carded.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Makazole Mapimpi 6: He didn’t get too many chances, but he made a good pass to Grant Williams for the scrumhalf’s try, he won a breakdown penalty, he chased kicks and also scored a try.</p><p>Manie Libbok 7: He was solid in everything he did though he missed two early kicks at goal. In the end, his distribution was solid, his kicking out of hand was decent, and he slotted five conversions. He also did some cleaning up in defence.</p><p>Grant Williams 8: A very satisfying outing by the scrumhalf. He scored a try after some excellent following up, and his line break and offload led to Moodie’s try. He was busy around the rucks and fringes.</p><p>Jasper Wiese 4: He was only on the field for 22 minutes before getting a red card for a head butt. He also got pinged at the breakdown on occasion. Left the action after 57 minutes.</p><p>Ruan Nortje 8: He is the new Franco Mostert … always working hard and getting stuck in all over the field. He took lineout ball, cleaned rucks, carried over the gainline, tackled Italians … all in a hugely busy all-round performance.</p><p>Salmaan Moerat 6: He knocked on badly on one occasion, and also gave away a penalty at a ruck. He won a few lineouts and carried well at times. He left the action after 56 minutes.</p><p> </p><p>Wilco Louw 7: The Bok scrum was dominant throughout the contest, without ever really getting their reward. He scrummed well and carried nicely at times, but he also picked up a yellow card for head contact.</p><p>Malcolm Marx 8: His lineout throwing was excellent, as it was the week before. He won a breakdown penalty, carried strongly and got stuck in. He also scored a try after some excellent general maul play in open play.</p><p>Thomas du Toit 5: He was pinged early on for a few mis-timed early shoves by the Boks and battled to settle. He cleaned a few rucks and carried on occasion but was surprisingly taken out of the action in the 30th minute.</p><p>Bench 7: It was a better showing than the week before, with Ox Nche making a big impact at scrum time when he joined the action for Louw. Cancelling insurance to save money<p>Skipping your car, home, or device insurance payments to reduce your monthly costs can have an adverse effect.</p><p>“One unexpected incident, like theft or accident, could put you into deep debt or wipe out your cash flow,” Ochse warns.</p><p> </p>4. Saving whatever is left at month-end<p>If your savings rely on leftover money, you will never build consistency. DIY investing without guidance<p>Jumping into investments based on online hype or peer pressure can do more harm than good. Presumably, he has no problem supporting it, given that he’s doubling down on the National Health Insurance (NHI). It would be pretty silly to advocate for the eventual blending of private and public healthcare, but demand that his ilk continue to be allowed to use private healthcare.</p><p>Perhaps that was the strategy of ActionSA all along: getting Motsoaledi to admit a personal lust toward private healthcare. Maybe that would work in a country where there’s some sort of honour, even if it’s among thieves, but this is South Africa. This is the country where we dare not even introduce self-service checkouts at grocers because we know how disastrous that would be.</p><p>So not only do we have to embrace the imposed moniker of “Plastique?” but we also have to accept that for the right people, the public purse will get them anything from a fire pool to a trip to the Cannes Film Festival.</p><p>How is it that despite the Department of Health never having any money, there are still so many awesome doctors in public hospitals? There may be no medicine for the plebeians, but the lights are still on, and if somebody important or a friend of a friend gets rushed in, throwing somebody out of the ICU to make way for them wouldn’t be an issue.</p><p>The problem has never been that we don’t have the facilities to deal with sick people. He could be in a rural clinic in Limpopo, but if they had to fly in the best medical team and equipment, best believe they’ll do it. Whether they’d do that for Sam Nje is less likely. </p><p>You’re dealing with a class of people who can walk into any school and bump their kids straight into the classroom on the day school starts, while the rest of us have to apply in utero just to get on the waiting list. This is why forcing them to use public services is hardly going to make the public services any better.</p><p>Remember that strange aunty in your family? The one whose house had a great lounge that nobody was allowed in because it had to be preserved in case the Queen, Nelson Mandela and the Pope decided to come visit — simultaneously.</p><p> </p><p>That’s all you’ll create when you force public servants to use public services: the white elephant room that will remain vacant in case the deputy minister of transport gets hit by a taxi nearby.</p><p>It’s a sad state of affairs that one feels the need to incentivise public servants to serve the public. It’s an even sadder state of affairs when trying to create those incentives is a losing battle. Maybe the answer should be to appoint public servants who are enthusiastic about public service in the first place. Because it really is. And who cares how much fuel it uses!</p><p>The new G45 BMW X3 now wears a M50 badge instead of the M40i badge from the previous generation X3. And just in case you were wondering, it still runs the same engine. Which is a 3.0-litre straight-six, turbocharged petrol unit from before. But now with 48V mild hybrid technology onboard, and it offers more power and torque that the model it replaces.</p><p>For 2025, the BMW X3 M50 delivers 293kW and 580Nm. The X3 M40i churned out 285kW and 500Nm. It’s a M Performance car. So what does this mean? In BMW-speak this means that the BMW X3 M50 would normally be the middle of the performance options in their range of vehicles.</p><p>Now, this is where you need to pay attention. It’s not middle-of-the-range anymore. This M Performance X3 is it. There will be no new hardcore BMW X3 M. Not as in maybe later this year or the next. Or some other time down the line. We have been told that’s it. Last year’s 375kW/650Nm, super car chasing X3 M is done. But before you feel shortchanged, this X3 M50 is the most M car you can buy for the money. You just get all the benefits that you do in the lineout, except this time in general play. So it worked for us twice, but now people will obviously be alert to that, and we won’t be able to do it for a couple of games,” said Erasmus with a smile.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Meanwhile, Bok prop Thomas du Toit had a torrid time in the scrums during his 30 minutes on the field, conceding two free kicks for early engagement, while he was also nailed with a long arm penalty, although he also earned a penalty for the Boks with a dominant scrum.</p><p>He was then replaced early by specialist loosehead Ox Nche, with Erasmus explaining that was purely down to the red card received by eighthman Jasper Wiese for a headbutt, that reduced the Bok scrum to seven men after 22 minutes.</p>Seven man scrum<p>“Thomas is a guy who can play both sides, loosehead and tighthead, but we think that he is a better tighthead. When we were reduced to 14-men, and we had a seven man scrum, we felt we needed an out and out loosehead to stabilise the scrum and handle the pressure of scrumming against eight guys with seven,” said Erasmus.</p><p>“We just felt Ox is more experienced (at loosehead) and very equipped for that, whereas Thomas is a bit of a swinger on both sides. If he was at tighthead where he is more comfortable and played a little bit more, we wouldn’t have taken him off. So it was purely due to us having a seven man scrum.”</p><p> </p><p>However, the seven man scrum did give the Boks an opportunity to test out their hybrid back once again, that they unleashed during the non-Test against the Barbarians a few weeks ago.</p><p>On that occasion inside centre Andre Esterhuizen came off the bench for the final 36 minutes at flank, but this time was slightly different as he started the game in the midfield, and thus packed down in the scrums (after Wiese went off), while also playing as usual in the backline.</p><p>“I think it saved us (experimenting with Esterhuizen). We didn’t have to take a back off and put a loose forward on. On our ball we could put Andre in at flank, and on their ball we could have him at centre.</p><p>“So it has really worked out well for us and I must be honest, when we planned that in the beginning I didn’t think it would help out with a red card. Picture: Anton Geyser/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Springbok wing Edwill van der Merwe cut a humble and grateful figure after his man-of-the-match performance against Italy on Saturday.</p><p>South Africa won the game 45–0 despite being a player down for about an hour.</p><p>The 29-year-old admitted in the build-up to the game that he had told himself he would not become a one-cap Springbok. This was after 13 months had passed between his debut and his second national call-up.</p>Edwill takes his opportunity<p>Just as he did in his first Test, Van der Merwe dazzled fans with his footwork and put his name on the score sheet.</p><p>The right wing’s first try came from a scintillating dive next to the sideline in the first half. The second came from chasing a kick that bounced kindly for him as he ran around a defender. He would have scored a hat-trick if not for a Willie le Roux pass going forward.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Springboks blank Italy: Four talking points </p> </p> </p><p>It was also his line break that led to a Grant Williams try in the first half. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In short, Van der Merwe looked like the most dangerous attacking player on the field.</p><p>“It was really an honour to get my second cap,” he said. “The guys made it easy for me. Once again, congrats to Willie [le Roux] for his 100<sup>th</sup> cap. He showed great leadership, keeping me calm.”</p><p>Van der Merwe said after Jasper Wiese’s red card in the 21st minute, the Springbok leadership encouraged the team at half-time to keep Italy’s score at zero.</p><p>“[They said] try to pull it together and give a good performance with 14 men.”</p><p> </p>Moerat praises the character of squad to smash Italy<p>Bok captain Salmaan Moerat explained after the game that his message to players was to “work that extra bit harder”.</p><p>“I think the boys did that. I think the boys really played hard and it clearly showed out there tonight,” he said.</p><p>“We knew the threat the Italians pose. They are a quality side. They made it really hard for us last week and this week. Other athletes are always quicker.</p><p>So you decide to give yourself an advantage. You’ll take some EPO. It has worked for other athletes, and maybe it will work for you.</p><p>Perhaps you even convinceyourself that everyone ahead of you is cheating, and it’s the only way to win.</p><p>What’s the next step? Who do you speak to? Where do you find EPO? And even if you could, you still have no idea what you’re doing.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>How many athletes who are caught doping have followed this route? I imagine it’s very few of them.</p><p>For the most part, surely, athletes are approached by people who already have access to performance enhancing substances and can put them in touch with a medical expert who is willing to advise them on what to do.</p>Find the suppliers<p>I don’t know how this works in real life, but in the movies, the cops are not as interested in punishing drug users as they are in finding dealers.</p><p>It’s a strategy that makes sense. Cut the drug off at the supplier and you solve the problem. Throw the users behind bars and the dealers will just find more of them.</p><p> </p><p>A friend of mine suggested this week that athletes who are caught doping should be given a significantly reduced sanction if they provide sufficient information about people who are higher up the chain.</p><p>This is a great idea. At first, it might seem wrong to let people off lightly for cheating, but if we look at the bigger picture, the current approach just isn’t working. If anything, the scourge of doping in sport is getting worse.</p><p>It was disappointing this week to hear that Nkosikhona Mhlakwana had tested positive for EPO after finishing fourth at the Two Oceans ultra-marathon in Cape Town earlier this year.</p><p>Of course, he has been suspended (for three years), but honestly, it feels like banning him is the equivalent of removing a single drop of water from a swimming pool.</p><p> </p>Scared to talk?<p>In the movies, the users often don’t want to talk, which is understandable. They don’t want to be taken out by people who are higher up the ladder. And that might also be the case for athletes. They’re probably scared to spill thebeans.</p><p>However, anti-doping bodies need to find a way to get athletes like Mhlakwana (and the many others who have been caught) to start talking.</p><p>Athletes are not buying EPO at the local pharmacy. What is noticeable in the data is that a gap remains between countries, with developed countries typically having a higher life expectancy than developing nations.</p><p>ALSO READ: The three phases of retirement and how to maintain your quality of life</p><p>“There is a strong correlation between a country’s healthcare spending and the life expectancy of its people. Created with Datawrapper.</sup><p>Wall says in South Africa life expectancy trends mirrored global progress until the 1990s, when the country faced a sharp reversal in life expectancy due to HIV/Aids, falling from 63 years in 1990 to only 53 years in 2005, before widespread antiretroviral treatment helped to restore it to 65.5 years by 2019.</p><p> </p><p>“Overall, the long-term trajectory for most countries is upward and future projections indicate continued gains. Global life expectancy is expected to reach the high seventies by 2050. Humanity is experiencing a longevity boom, a triumph of development with advances in medicine, public health and living conditions, but one that requires individuals and societies to adapt, particularly in planning for retirement and old age.”</p>The concept of ‘retirement’<p>He says we all grow up with this idea of life where we go through the cycle of life, attending school, beginning our working careers and starting and raising a family. “Then, one day, when we are older, we retire.</p><p>“There have been changes to this cycle over time, more recently with people often getting married and starting a family later in life.”</p><p>The concept of “retirement” is much different today than it was before the 20th century. Wall points out. “People used to work until their death or until they reached old age. Today, the concept generally means you can stop working and enjoy the fruits of your labour. However, the reality is a lot more complex than this, with not all people following the same retirement journey.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Warning! The retirement savings gap is widening in South Africa</p>Retirement age across the globe<p>In South Africa, the public sector’s old age grant is paid to people older than 60 who qualify. In the private sector, many employers, through company policies or employment contracts, have a retirement age that ranges between 60 and 65, when service comes to an end, although this can be extended in some circumstances.</p><p>In the US, Congress passed a law in 1983 that increased the full retirement age from 65 to 67, aiming to deal with rising life expectancy and the financial strain on social security. People can start claiming social security benefits at the age of 62, but they will receive a reduced monthly payment and only qualify for the full benefit when they turn 67.</p><p>France experienced a period of unrest and strikes as President Emmanuel Macron implemented a retirement reform bill, which increased the retirement age from 62 to 64 by 2030. The French system is a bit more complex than most, but it ultimately came down to gradually increasing the retirement age over time to ensure the system’s sustainability.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: 50 and still haven’t saved? Here’s how to kickstart your retirement plan today</p><p>In the UK, the state pension age is currently set at 66 and is scheduled to increase to 67 by 2028 and 68 by 2046, while the government is required by UK law to review it regularly. During its 2021 review, they even considered whether the increase to 68 should be brought forward to 2037-39, but this proposal did not make it into the final submission.</p><p>Wall says this raises an important question regarding the evolution of the retirement age and what a sustainable age is when people can retire to support the public and private systems.</p>How to save for a longer retirement<p>People are expected to live longer and developed countries are beginning to raise their retirement age. Wall says longevity risk is one of the most significant risks to retirement planning, as it amplifies all other risks.</p><p> </p><p>“There are many approaches to this pre- and post-retirement. Regarding pre-retirement, one of the most important factors in deciding whether someone will have enough money saved for retirement is how long they have been contributing and saving for retirement. Therefore, it is so important for younger individuals and families to ensure that retirement savings start with their first salary.”</p><p>He says when considering post-retirement, the 4% rule springs to mind, where you can withdraw 4% of your retirement savings in your first year of retirement and then adjust this amount for inflation in the following years.</p><p>“This approach offers you approximately an 87% chance of avoiding the depletion of your retirement savings over a retirement period of 30 years.</p><p>Morningstar’s latest State of Retirement Income 2024 report for the US retirement industry reveals that the “safe” starting withdrawal rate has decreased from 4% to 3.7%.</p><p>“Safe is considered a 90% success rate where your money does not run out, assuming a 30-year retirement period. This decline is attributed to equities posting the best 15-year period returns since 1970. Consequently, due to the recent robust market performance, valuations are high, which raises the likelihood that future returns may be lower.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Gen Zs have better opportunity for financially secure retirement</p>Consider risk of living longer now<p>He says it is now more important than ever to consider the risk of people living for longer than anticipated and how this should be approached before and after retirement. “Planning for retirement in the era of longevity requires a proactive and multifaceted approach.</p><p>“We should assume we may live longer than average and rather err on the side of caution by saving more, investing wisely and seeking professional advice.
