3201595	有图 <p>Supporters of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and those of the reinstated 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, clashed on Sunday at the Kofar Kudu palace.</p><p>The incident occurred as Emir Bayero returned from his Mandawari residence.</p> <p>During the clash, the palace gate was reportedly broken, guards were attacked and injured, and police vehicles within the palace premises were vandalised.</p><p>SPONSOR AD</p> <p>Tensions within the Kano Emirate have remained high following the state government’s decision to reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.</p> 39 killed in Kano, Lagos, Ogun road crashes APC leaders’ absence during Shettima’s Kano visit sparks debate<p>The reinstatement came after the review of the emirate law, which had created four additional emirates.</p><p>The move has been challenged in court, with Aminu Ado Bayero refusing to relinquish his claim to the throne. He continues to occupy the Nasarawa Palace under a heavy security presence.</p><p>Civil society groups and elder statesmen have called for restraint from both factions, urging them to remain calm and await the outcome of ongoing judicial proceedings.</p><p>A statement by the Kano Emirate Media Team, signed by Sadam Yakasai, alleged that Bayero’s supporters “unleashed mayhem” at the palace in the absence of Emir Sanusi, who was reportedly away at the time.</p><p>“They broke the gate and attacked the guards, injuring some of them. They smashed police vehicles in the palace.</p><p>“Aminu deliberately passed through the emir’s palace road instead of taking the proper route from Koki to Nassarawa, and his hoodlums decided to attack Gidan Rumfa,” Yakasai alleged.</p><p>He accused Emir Bayero of consistently using such routes to intimidate Sanusi’s loyalists and the general public, despite relocating to and taking control of the Nassarawa mini-palace.</p><p>“Let it be noted that the deposed emir does not have the support of any of the emirate stakeholders, as 37 out of the 38 district heads have pledged allegiance to Emir Sanusi,” Yakasai said.</p><p>He further said only one of Bayero’s six brothers failed to recognise Sanusi’s reinstatement and cited the turbaning of the nephew of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje as village head of Ganduje by Emir Sanusi as proof of growing institutional legitimacy.</p><p>“This is the first time deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero is taking his fight directly to Gidan Rumfa,” Yakasai said.</p><p>Bayero’s camp reacts</p><p>Attempts to get a response from Bayero’s camp were unsuccessful, as his spokesperson, Abubakar Kofar-Naisa, did not respond to calls.</p><p>However, Muktar Dahiru, a member of Bayero’s entourage and eyewitness to the incident, dismissed Yakasai’s claims.</p><p>He insisted that the clash was provoked by unknown hoodlums who attempted to block the emir’s passage.</p><p>“I was on the entourage of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Bayero, when we were returning from a condolence visit to the family of Alhaji Aminu Dantata.</p><p>“As we approached Kofar Kudu, we encountered some miscreants with dangerous weapons trying to block the road. Our people had to clear the way. The emir passed safely,” Dahiru said.</p><p>He denied that any palace guard was injured and said the police were forced to intervene by dispersing the crowd with tear gas.</p><p>Another Bayero supporter, Ayman Ado, also accused Sanusi loyalists of attempting to provoke violence.</p><p>“We were moving peacefully. No one in our entourage had any weapons, not even sticks.</p><p>“But when we reached Kofar Kudu, they had already assembled thugs with stones, ready to attack our emir.</p><p>“When they launched the attack, we had to defend ourselves,” Ado told Daily Trust.</p><p>Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing.</p><p>“We have heard different narratives and are compiling information. We are studying the situation before we can make any conclusive statements,” he said.</p><p>Residents speak</p><p>In separate interviews with Daily Trust, residents of Kano expressed deep frustration over the conflict between supporters of Bayero Sanusi, describing it as unnecessary and damaging to the emirate’s legacy.</p><p>Ibrahim Sani, a trader at the bustling Kofar Wambai Market, described the confrontation as “sad and unnecessary,” urging both factions to de-escalate the political drama.</p><p>“This fight between the supporters of the two emirs is sad and unnecessary. The emirate is a symbol of peace and unity, but now it’s being dragged into political chaos. We, the ordinary people, are the ones suffering from the confusion and insecurity it is causing,” he said.</p><p>For Zainab Haruna, a schoolteacher in Gwale Local Government Area, the crisis not only undermines the sanctity of the emirate institution but also sets a dangerous precedent for future generations.</p><p>“It’s disappointing to see traditional leaders’ supporters resort to violence. The emirate is supposed to promote culture and morality, not division and street fights. Both parties should allow the courts to decide and stop disturbing the peace of Kano,” she said.</p><p>Similarly, Musa Adamu, a university student in Tarauni, expressed frustration at the prolonged dispute and urged the state government and traditional institutions to prioritise the well-being of the people over personal or political interests.</p><p>“This situation is getting out of hand. Whether it’s Sanusi or Bayero, the government and the traditional council need to find a peaceful resolution. Kano is known for its rich history, not for royal clashes. 3201594	有图 <p>The Kaduna State Government says the 15 hospitalised students as a result of the recent diarrhea outbreak at the Government Girls Senior and Junior Secondary School, Kawo, have fully recovered, discharged and resumed school.</p><p>The State Commissioner for Health, Umma Kaltum -Ahmed, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Kaduna.</p> <p>“On June 30, the ministry received reports of multiple students presenting with symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting.</p><p>SPONSOR AD</p> <p>“In swift response, the State Rapid Response Team (RRT), in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other health partners, were deployed to investigate and contain the outbreak.</p> 39 killed in Kano, Lagos, Ogun road crashes APC leaders’ absence during Shettima’s Kano visit sparks debate<p>“An investigation conducted by the Kaduna State Rapid Response Team, led by the State Epidemiologist, Dr Jeremiah Diako, revealed that 81 students were affected. The affected students were between the ages of 16 and 17,” she said.</p><p>She said the 15 students required admission at General Hospital Kawo have fully recovered and have since been discharged.</p><p>“No fatalities were recorded. The situation has been successfully contained, and the students have continued normal activities under close monitoring,” he said.</p><p>The commissioner recommended preventive measures for schools and public to prevent future occurrence which included: hand washing, use of alcohol – based sanitiser, safe drinking water and food safely.</p><p>“All schools, communities, and the general public are to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and clean water, especially after using the toilet and before eating or preparing food.</p><p>“They have been directed to install hand washing stations in schools and public areas and avoid food handling while symptomatic and use alcohol-based hand sanitizers (with at least 60% alcohol) when soap and water are unavailable.</p><p>“Students or staff with diarrhea or vomiting should stay home until at least 48 hours after symptoms resolve,” she said.</p><p>She added that residents should ensure water for drinking is boiled, chlorinated, or treated appropriately.</p><p>She urged residents to cook food thoroughly, especially meats, eggs and vegetables.</p><p>She added that all schools and residents should always embark on environmental sanitation.</p><p>“Keep school Kitchens, toilets and drainage systems clean and functional.</p><p>Dispose of waste properly to prevent contamination and vector breeding.</p><p>“Conduct regular health talks in schools and communities, and train food handlers on personal hygiene and safe food preparation practices.”</p><p>She also called on residents to end open defecation by promoting the use of clean latrines.</p><p>The commissioner called on school administrators, community leaders, local health teams, and citizens to collaborate in implementing these preventive measures.</p><p>“The ministry of health remains fully committed to protecting the health and safety of students and the broader population. 3201593	有图 <p>The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has expressed concern over the persistent failure of government agencies to account for public funds, revealing that over ₦300 billion flagged by various audit reports remains unrecovered.</p><p>Abbas spoke yesterday during the opening of a 4-day National Conference on Public Accounts and Fiscal Governance 2025 with the theme: ‘Fiscal governance in Nigeria: Charting a new course for transparency and sustainable development’, organised by the Public Accounts Committees (PACs) of the National Assembly.</p> <p>The Speaker, represented by House Leader Julius Ihonvbere, said the trend undermines Nigeria’s fiscal integrity and accountability.</p><p>SPONSOR AD</p> <p>“Fiscal responsibility cannot thrive where audit queries are routinely ignored without consequences. He said MDAs must not only be monitored but held to measurable standards of public resource management.</p><p>While calling for digital innovation in public finance, Abbas revealed that the House is prioritising the integration of real-time expenditure tracking tools and audit software to eliminate inefficiencies and enhance transparency.</p><p>Delivering the president’s address, Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, reiterated his administration’s resolve towards strengthening the role of Office of the Auditor-General, enhancing procurement transparency framework, and expanding the use of digital financial management systems across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).</p><p>While acknowledging that sound fiscal governance cannot thrive in isolation from monetary stability, Tinubu assured that his “administration is working more closely than ever with the Central Bank of Nigeria to ensure better coordination between fiscal and monetary policy. This alignment is crucial to tame inflation, stabilise the naira, and restore investor confidence.”</p><p>The president called on the National Assembly and especially the Public Accounts Committees to continue discharging their constitutional responsibilities with integrity, courage and independence. “Oversight is not a political tool—it is a patriotic duty,” Tinubu said.</p><p>Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Senator Abdul Ningi, warned against the rising trend of non-compliance with legislative summons, particularly by heads of agencies.</p><p>“Refusal to honour legislative invitations, especially from PACs, is an affront to democracy and must be stopped,” Akpabio said. “The Public Accounts Committees are constitutionally empowered watchdogs of public funds.”</p><p>Akpabio called for increased legislative capacity and digital tools to audit institutions like the CBN, NNPC, and FIRS, warning that impunity and opacity will no longer be tolerated.</p><p>Chairman of the House Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Hon. Bamidele Salam, described the conference as a “milestone” in Nigeria’s pursuit of transparency and sustainable development. He called for the recalibration of the country’s fiscal governance systems.</p><p>“Making public funds work for public good is a mantra we must not only proclaim but internalize and practice,” Salam said.</p><p>Senator Ahmed Wadada, Chairman of the Senate Public Accounts Committee (SPAC), echoed the call for discipline, warning that Nigeria’s progress depends on how public funds are managed.</p><p>“We have seen budgets passed without adequate oversight and funds released without measurable outcomes. This will bring the total number of Muslim holidays to four while Christian holidays remain five.</p><p>He went on to call for the introduction of Friday as a work-free day to assume parity with the Christians’ Sunday as well as the extension of Shariah Courts to the South West to adjudicate on civil matters like inheritance, marriage.</p><p>“Immigration officials engage in regular stereotyping of Muslims who apply for international passports. They intimidate Muslims particularly at the point of taking pictures. Muslim males are ordered to remove their caps; Imams are coerced into removing their turbans; bearded Muslims are compelled to shave or trim their beards; hijab-wearing Muslim women are made to remove their hijabs or ordered to draw their hijab backwards to reveal their ears.
