More emergency landing on Monday.</p></fbs-accordion><small>getty</small></p>Key Facts<p><p>A Delta flight from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was forced to make an emergency landing in Fort Myers, Florida, on Monday when a passenger’s personal device caught fire in the aircraft cabin, a Delta spokesperson confirmed to Forbes, adding “flight attendants used their training and procedures to deploy a fire containment bag to extinguish the battery.”</p><p>The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reported 34 lithium-battery incidents on planes in the first six months of 2025, averaging nearly six events per month—slightly down from last year, which averaged more than seven per month. </p><p>The FAA and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) ban portable chargers from checked luggage but allow them in carry-on bags.</p><p>In May, Southwest Airlines became the first U.S. airline to ban passengers from charging devices with a power bank inside a carry-on bag due to the risk of a charger’s lithium battery overheating or catching fire—going further than FAA guidance.</p><p>Following a fire that destroyed a passenger jet in February, South Korean budget carrier Air Busan prohibited carry-on luggage containing portable chargers from being stored in overhead bins.</p></p>How Common Are Lithium-Battery Incidents On Airplanes?<p>In the United States, the FAA has reported 632 lithium battery incidents since the agency began tracking such events in 2006—with more than one third (246) involving portable battery packs. The FAA confirmed 89 lithium battery incidents on aircraft in 2024—an average of 1.7 per week. These events have become more frequent in recent years with the proliferation of personal devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, such as laptops, tablets, cell phones, vape pens and portable chargers. In 2014, the FAA reported only nine lithium battery incidents all year. </p>What Makes Lithium Battery Incidents So Dangerous?<p>“The prevalence of lithium batteries is a potential hazard to aircraft safety,” one FAA study states, due to “the potential to undergo a process called thermal runaway,” which is an uncontrollable and rapid rise in temperature and pressure and the release of flammable gases. Lithium batteries can overheat and catch fire due to a variety of reasons, including “physical damage (e.g., the battery is penetrated or crushed or exposed to water), electrical damage (e.g., overcharging or using charging equipment not designed for the battery), exposure to extreme temperatures, and product defects,” according to the National Fire Protection Association.</p><p><fbs-embedly iframe-src="https://embedly.forbes.com/widgets/media.html?type=text%2Fhtml&key=cfc0fb0733504c77aa4a6ac07caaffc7&schema=twitter&url=https%3A//x.com/YonhapNews/status/1884940376022331543&image="></fbs-embedly></p><p></p>What Happens When A Lithium Battery Overheats Midflight?<p>In most cases, the event is handled before the device catches fire. “These things produce so much smoke and that generally will get people"s attention, plus the smell of the smoke is very pungent and it"s very noticeable,” John Cox, an aviation safety expert and retired commercial airline pilot, told Forbes. Sometimes, though, the device goes into thermal runaway and catches fire. For example, on April 9, an American Airlines flight from Indianapolis to Los Angeles was diverted to Chicago after a passenger’s portable battery charger caught fire and was extinguished by crew members. Experts have previously suggested that levying tariffs on pharmaceuticals could lead to higher prices for Americans: John Murphy III, CEO of the Association for Accessible Medicines, said in an April statement that “tariffs … will only amplify the problems that already exist in the U.S. market for affordable medicines,” and industry experts told The New York Times in April that Americans could have to pay higher co-pays or out of pocket costs for their medications. The threat of tariffs have also sparked fears of potential drug shortages, with a report by the Brookings Institution noting foreign drug companies could respond to the increased cost from tariffs by exiting the U.S. market entirely. Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks, whose company manufactures such drugs as GLP-1 medications Mounjaro and Zepbound, has suggested tariffs could cause the company to reduce its investments in research and development, however, meaning there could also be broader impacts on creating new treatments for Americans’ health issues.</p>Which Medications Could Be Most Affected By Tariffs?<p>Generic drugs are most likely to face the brunt of the impact of any tariffs, the UNC Center for the Business of Health pointed out, given they operate on much lower profit margins than brand-name drugs that can more easily absorb extra costs from tariffs. The Brookings Institution notes controlled substances like opioids and ADHD medications will be less impacted, as they’re already largely manufactured in the U.S. due to additional restrictions, and nearly half of all generic injectible drugs like IV antibiotics, saline, chemotherapy agents, lidocaine, and epinephrine are also already produced domestically.</p><p></p>Which Countries Will Be Impacted By Pharmaceutical Tariffs?<p>The top countries that imported pharmaceuticals into the U.S. in 2024 were Ireland ($50.3 billion in imports), Switzerland ($19 billion), Germany ($17.1 billion), Singapore ($15.3 billion) and India ($12.5 billion), as compiled by the Observatory of Economic Complexity, a trade data platform aligned with MIT. While name-brand drugs are largely manufactured in the U.S. and Europe, generic drugs are primarily imported from India and China, the UNC Center for the Business of Health notes. </p>Key Background<p>Trump has made tariffs the centerpiece of his economic policy, levying sweeping tariffs on imported goods over the concerns of economists, who warn doing so will raise prices for consumers and harm the economy. In addition to the widespread “Liberation Day” tariffs Trump has imposed on nearly all countries, the president has also imposed a more limited set of sector-specific tariffs, such as on steel and automobiles. While the president carved out a specific exemption for pharmaceuticals in his “Liberation Day” tariffs, Trump has repeatedly suggested that tariffs could be coming for the industry, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick claimed in April that pharmaceutical tariffs would be rolled out “in probably a month or two.” The Trump administration also announced in April an investigation into pharmaceutical imports and their impact on national security, which would be a step toward imposing tariffs. Airlines Suspend Service To Israel?<p>United last flew to Tel Aviv on June 11. A day later, Israel"s bombing campaign against Iran caused the carrier to turn a flight back enroute to Tel Aviv. Delta also suspended its Israel service at that time. In the weeks since, the Middle East airspace has largely reopened, but the corridor between Israel and Iran remains high risk if the conflict resumes, according to Safe Airspace. Two Israeli airlines, EL AL and Arkia, are currently operating flights between Israel and the U.S.</p>When Will United Begin Selling Flights Between Newark And Tel Aviv?<p>Ticket sales for flights to and from Tel Aviv became available for purchase on the United Airlines website Tuesday.</p>What We Don’t Know<p>How long the ceasefires in Israel will last. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Donald Trump met Monday for the third time this year and took a proverbial victory lap after joint strikes on Iran, which has demanded accountability for the attacks. Meanwhile, Israel"s 21-month war against Hamas in Gaza remains tenuous. Trump has characterized the Gaza ceasefire talks as “going along very well,” the BBC reported, despite no breakthrough in the latest round of communications between Israel and Hamas in Qatar.</p>Tangent<p>On Monday, Netanyahu presented Trump with a letter nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor the U.S. president has publicly lobbied for. All rights reserved.</small></p>Key Facts<p><p>Momentum Commerce, which manages Amazon sales for popular retailers accounting for $7 billion in spending on the online platform, said early spending was down nearly 14%, Bloomberg first reported—a major shift from past years, when customers spent considerably more on the sale’s first day.</p><p>In its own preview published in June, Momentum previously estimated Prime Day sales would grow by 14% from last year.</p><p>Andrew Waber, the director of market research at Momentum, told Forbes he still feels confident in the 14% growth prediction, noting the dip might be explained by Amazon offering four days of sales instead of the usual two this year, leading to less rush in the early hours. </p><p>Customers might be taking advantage of this extended time frame, as “shoppers strategically time their purchases across the extended event window to capitalize on new deals being released each day,” a representative from the company said.</p><p>The company said it would provide comprehensive sales analysis Wednesday for the first full day.</p><p>Amazon’s stock price quickly fell as far as 1.8% on Tuesday morning around the same time the early sales numbers were reported, before leveling out around a 1.4% decline Tuesday afternoon—despite a relatively flat day for markets.</p><p>Jed Ellerbroek, the portfolio manager at Argent Capital, agreed that customers likely just have less urgency this year with the extended sales dates, and that the stock price was likely also impacted by other factors.</p><p>“Amazon is probably the most impacted among the large technology group by tariffs, and those have taken center stage again this week,” Ellerbroek told Forbes in an email, but added he was still optimistic about the tech giant, calling it “our favorite large cap idea long-term.”</p><p>Amazon said it did not have a comment on the record at this time.</p></p>Key Background<p>Amazon’s stock price is down since its $242.52 peak in February, missing out on recent all-time highs for many stocks, and it was heavily impacted by the slump following President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff announcements. Pool, in his YouTube video, said: “The issue is not, ‘Superman is an immigrant.’ The issue is illegal immigration,” but questioned whether Superman, who was sent to Earth as a baby, would’ve been entitled to birthright citizenship.</p>How Has The “superman” Cast And Crew Responded To Backlash?<p>They’ve largely brushed it off, with Gunn telling Variety at a premiere event Monday he is “not here to judge people,” adding he thinks “this is a movie about kindness and I think that’s something everyone can relate to.” Actor Nathon Fillion, who plays Green Lantern in the movie, dismissed criticism, saying to Variety, “Somebody needs a hug. It"s just a movie, guys.” David Corenswet, who plays Superman, did not address the backlash, but echoed Gunn’s sentiment at the film’s world premiere Monday. “Be kind to each other, step up to the plate. See what responsibilities you can shoulder, who you can take care of, who you can look out for,” he said. </p>Is Superman Really An Immigrant?<p>Some fans and scholars have long considered Superman’s story to be a possible metaphor for immigration, in part because of the background of its creators. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who penned the first Superman comic in 1938, were children of Jewish immigrants from Europe who arrived in the United States in the early 20th century. Superman was originally named Kal-El upon birth, which appears to be inspired by Hebrew, as the suffix “El” means “of God,” and some have loosely translated his name to mean “voice of God.” As the planet suffered from war and a lack of resources, Superman’s parents sent him in a small spaceship to Earth, which has drawn comparisons to the story of Moses, who was placed in a basket and sent down the Nile to save him from being killed. 3202075	无图 <p>During Hollywood’s Golden Age (between the 1930s and the 1940s), businessmen, more often than not, were portrayed as heroes, sympathetic characters and ordinary Joes that people could relate to. The era may have been a lot of things, but innocent was not one of them. Film Noir – a style renowned for its hard-boiled characters and harsh storylines came of age in the 1940s, and the era saw early shockers like King Kong and Hitchcock hit the silver screen. As an era it was not averse to social commentary, and many of the movies at the time addressed difficult and complicated issues with nuance and sensitivity</p> <p>It was not an age for suckers or fools – two world wars were within recent memory – and social change was rapid and dramatic</p> <p>So it wasn’t naivete that saw the archetype of businessman portrayed positively. The age was familiar with the excesses of the 1920s and the robber barons. It was just understood that people pursued better lives for themselves and their families through business. The business person was – outmoded gender roles aside – the regular person. Someone who put in work, made money, took care of their household and contributed to their community.</p> <p>There was inherent nobility in pursuing fulfillment, value and contribution to the world this way. Not just the small business types either, 1941’s Citizen Kane was a publishing mogul. In Dinner At Eight, Lionel Barrymore is a dignified, decent shipping magnate. In It’s A Wonderful Life, Jimmy Stewart plays an empathetic, likeable banker.</p> <p>Never mind the Golden Age – prior to 1965, television shows portrayed business people as ‘good guys’ twice as often as ‘bad guys’. The person engaged in business was an entrepreneur, and employer, a pioneer, a trailblazer, a brave explorer, a fighter, a trier, a never-give-upper. Families – already familiar with the hippie movement and anti-war sentiments – flocked around their television sets to watch regular people – just like themselves – working to carve out a future for them and their families. </p> <p>Looking at the data, this trend reversed in the 1970s. After that, audiences were shown two evil businessmen for each good one. The reverse happened gradually at first, and then sped up as the decade drew to a close.</p> <p>Suddenly we found the archetype very much intact, but completely reversed. Today, it is hard to think of a single positive portrayal (a handful of exceptions). In the imagination of popular movies, television shows and novels, business people – at least successful ones – are most likely villains – destroying the environment, exploiting the poor, and worshipping only greed. Suddenly very rich, ultra-capitalist Hollywood – for some reason – bent over backwards to deliver anti-capitalist messages as widely as it could (see Businessmen are always the villains, the Economist, 16 October 2015).</p> <p>The portrayals go beyond classic villains, like Gordon Gecko in Wall Street. Businessmen are always eligible to be the bad guys, and sometimes the portrayals are so laughably one sided they become caricatures. Now, when people think of business, they immediately land on ‘Greed is Good’ or the Wolf of Wall Street – as if there is no dividing line between Don Vito Corleone and your employer. In the TV-series Mr Robot, for example, there is even a company called ‘Evil Corp’. Subtle much, guys?</p> <p>No genre is immune. From Avatar to Aliens, Tron: Legacy to Inception, space is infected with evil businesspeople, hell bent to hurt, plunder and destroy, left, right, center, up above and down below. The Geeks need to know, too. </p> <p>From entertainment for the kids with Despicable Me to the horror and gore of Resident Evil, evil business is everywhere and consistent. High budget or low budget, good acting or bad acting, it is of no consequence: The International, The Constant Gardener, Michael Clayton, Syriana, Erin Brokovich, Fire Down Below, Spiderman, Boiler Room, Tomorrow Never </p> <p>Dies, Mission: Impossible 2 – if they are mining, processing, manufacturing, financing, flying, building, moving, medicating, representing or inventing, they are more likely than not out to get you. </p> <p>Sociologists Robert Lichter, Linda Lichter and Stanley Rothman conducted an exhaustive study of prime time TV shows and found that business is the only occupation portrayed on television disproportionately involved in crime. </p> <p>The Media Research Center’s researchers in Alexandria, Virginia, subjected themselves to 863 sitcoms, dramas and TV movies, broadcast by ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox and this is how they phrased their conclusion: “Businesspeople tend to be portrayed as venal and unscrupulous. They engage in criminal behavior.” For example, they found that as a group, corporate types commit more murders on TV than career criminals.</p> <p>The late Christopher Hitchens noticed the trend and declared: “In the movies, the instant the camera pans up the towering and glittering skyscraper, you just know that there is a corporate villain lurking on the top floor.”</p> <p>It would seem that formulaic Hollywood discovered an evergreen class of nefarious archetypes they can recycle over and over again.</p> <p>What does the trend reveal?</p> <p>Well, in this realm it is harder to find the data – and one must necessarily begin to speculate on causes, implications and cures. We move from undeniable trends that can be observed, and move into the field of opinion and value judgements. It would seem that audiences – and perhaps that is but another word for society – have settled for accepting the message that business itself has no decency or dignity. </p> <p>Interestingly, very few people will declare that they themselves work for an evil corporation. It is hard to demonize the people that pay you that cushy paycheck every month. And my own colleagues are always relatively nice people (even Old Marge in the small office five doors down, on the left).</p> <p>My employer, my company and my business are basically decent – but business as a whole is evil. This is part of that lazy trend where categories become so widely inclusive that they exclude any personal responsibility. It is also the kind of lazy observation that lead to such fallacious oversimplifications as ‘bad guys win’. The truth is, the bad guys only win in movies</p> <p>If you exploit people, cheat, lie, steal, backstab, rip off and victimize – in the real world, your business has zero percent chance of being successful in the long run. </p> <p>Think about the last plumber or mechanic that ripped you off and consider what you said about them to those who asked if you knew anyone who could help them.</p> <p>Likewise, if you’ve ever been treated fairly and you’ve been given a good deal – cold, hard, heartless rationality alone dictates that you became a walking advertisement for the business that handled you that well.</p> <p>Gangsters and exploiters may make fine cannon fodder for the silver screen, but in the real world, where reputation matters, the good guys may not always win – but they are the only ones with a fighting chance. </p> <p>Reputation matters. Integrity matters. Responsibility matters</p> <p>Perhaps it is time for audiences – and entertainers – to reconsider their choice of villain, and the message they send to the next generation by portraying reality in the way they do. Reflexionó sobre el papel clave de CLACSO en la región y la importancia de Cuba en el contexto latinoamericano: «América necesita de CLACSO, y CLACSO tiene un papel que cumplir en Cuba».</p><p>Subrayó la necesidad de un socialismo democrático, afirmando: «No podrá existir democracia sin socialismo, ni socialismo sin democracia». Además, alertó sobre los desafíos actuales: «Hoy nos debatimos entre un socialismo no nato y una democracia en deformación», señalando la responsabilidad de las ciencias sociales en analizar este fenómeno.</p><p><img src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==" rel="noopener noreferrer"></p><p>Georgina Alfonso, directora del Instituto de Filosofía de Cuba y miembro del Comité Directivo de CLACSO, resaltó los aportes de Alonso a las ciencias sociales desde una perspectiva emancipadora. «Su obra nos convoca desde un ideal colectivo para continuar revolucionando la Revolución», afirmó. Además, destacó su rebeldía y su compromiso político dentro de la academia cubana.</p><p>Rafael Hernández, politólogo y director de la Revista Temas, elogió la trayectoria del premiado, definiéndolo como símbolo de una generación en revolución, con un pensamiento marxista crítico y una militancia constante. Se trata de una vieja estrategia de cerco económico y comercial para acabar definitivamente con la obra de la Revolución cubana.</p><p>Los centros cubanos, miembros de CLACSO, denunciamos esta nueva acción imperialista con fines desestabilizadores del proyecto social cubano y reafirmamos nuestro derecho inalienable a la soberanía, independencia y dignidad humana. En una época convulsa para las alternativas anticapitalistas, la experiencia de la Revolución cubana sigue siendo un referente ético y político de transformación social emancipador.</p><p>Cuba es una espina en la garganta de la derecha fascista mundial, porque sigue viva como posibilidad histórica ante la crisis capitalista global. La Revolución cubana es un referente de poder popular construido, de rebeldía emancipadora y sujeto colectivo consciente, con capacidades de organización y movilización frente a los intentos de neocolonización neoliberal con nuevas máscaras modernizadoras. Como parte de la sociedad cubana, enfatizamos nuestro derecho humano a vivir en solidaridad con justicia social, ese es el principal fundamento que nos impulsa a seguir pensando y trabajando por el socialismo.</p><p>El gobierno estadounidense nunca ha ayudado al mejoramiento de las condiciones de vida del pueblo cubano. Esta acción de odio y prepotencia imperial es también, una apuesta por la colonización del pensamiento crítico. Motlhalo gave South Africa the lead sending Cynthia Komlan the wrong way from the resultant spot kick. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The goal seemed to inject some energy into the defending champions and they continued to pile on the pressure on Ghana. Picture: Jairus Mmutle/GCIS</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Tributes continue to pour in for former deputy president David Mabuza, whom many see as the man who stopped a second takeover by Jacob Zuma through his proxies. </p><p>Although he was initially on the Zuma faction slate before the ANC national conference election in 2017, Mabuza’s last-minute withdrawal from supporting then presidential candidate Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was regarded as a betrayal by Zuma supporters. </p><p>He joined the Ramaphosa camp, helping it to secure victory as he brought all of his massive Mpumalanga support base to back him against Dlamini-Zuma. </p>Mabuza’s switch from Dlamini-Zuma to Ramaphosa seen as turning point<p>This was regarded as a wise move by many who believed Dlamini-Zuma’s presidency would have ensured the continuation of the Zuma status quo, which was unpopular with voters. </p><p>Dlamini-Zuma was loyal to the former president and the Gupta brothers, who were fingered for the corporate capture of the state, adored her. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Top 10 stories of the day: Mabuza funeral \| Springboks beat Italy \| 2025 Durban July </p> </p> </p><p>They selected Dlamini-Zuma as The New Age Newsmaker of the Year and she was one of the movers and shakers they believed in, along with Zuma himself. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: David Mabuza’s funeral date confirmed as Mokonyane dismisses ANC criticism claims</p><p>The Guptas captured some provinces and offered their premiers extra publicity on the pages of The New Age and ANN7 TV channel. </p><p>Gauteng under Nomvula Mokonyane, Ace Magashule’s Free State, Northern Cape which was then led by Sylvia Lucas and North West under Supra Mahumapelo received special treatments on the Gupta publication and channel. </p><p>While other premiers were eating from the Guptas’ hand and, in turn, dishing out state advertisements to The New Age to keep it afloat after commercial advertisers boycotted it, Mabuza refused to cooperate or be captured by the Guptas. </p><p> </p>Blacklisted by Guptas<p>He pulled out adverts from the Mpumalanga administration at the last moment after learning that the ads were earmarked to be published in The New Age. </p><p>This caused Mabuza and then Western Cape premier, Helen Zille to be blacklisted by the Guptas. Picture: Gareth Copley / Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A strong characteristic of a good leader is when you put your team first ahead of self interest. </p><p>Aged just 27 in his first match as Test captain, Wiaan Mulder showed maturity beyond his years yesterday when he declared the South African first innings on 625/5 at lunch on the second day of the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. </p><p>In declaring, Mulder – in just his 21st Test – was just 33 runs shy of Brian Lara’s highest individual Test score of 400 not out, which he set against England at St John’s in 2004. </p><p>His unbeaten 367 was the fifth-highest individual score in Test cricket. </p><p>Mulder, who surpassed South Africa’s previous highest individual Test score of 311 not out set by Hashim Amla against England at The Oval in 2012, had plenty of time to push on towards and beyond Lara’s record. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Wiaan Mulder: Five things to know about cricket’s latest star </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Should Mulder have gone for Lara’s 400 record? Pictures: Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The war of words between KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu has dented the reputation of the police, according to experts. </p><p>“Trust and integrity are fundamental to the effective operation of any public institution, especially those entrusted with safeguarding the safety and security of individuals,” said reputation management expert Tshepo Matseba. </p>Police must operate with highest levels of accountability and transparency<p>“This is particularly true for the Saps, an institution that must operate with the highest levels of accountability and transparency to maintain the public’s confidence. </p><p>“The allegations against senior figures within the police force, regardless of their eventual outcome, present a critical challenge not just for the individuals implicated, but for the entire institution and SA’s security framework. </p><p>“They can cause lasting damage to the public’s trust in law enforcement. Police portfolio committee chair Ian Cameron hit the nail on the head when he said: “South Africans deserve clear answers. Silence is not an option.” </p><p> </p><p>He added: “The allegations, if correct, have far-reaching implications on the effectiveness of Saps and require immediate attention.
