3202486	无图 Jembrana, Bali (ANTARA) - The bodies of two men, believed to be passengers of the <i>Tunu Pratama Jaya</i> ferry, which sank in the Bali Strait last week, were retrieved by local fishermen in Jembrana district, Bali Island, on Wednesday morning.</p><p>With this, the total death toll in the ferry mishap has reached 12, with the number of survivors recorded at 30. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) on Wednesday extended the search for 23 passengers who remain missing, citing humanitarian grounds.</p><p>According to head of the Basarnas Bali-Office, I Nyoman Sidakarya, the two bodies were found by fishermen from the Pabuahan hamlet of Banyubiru village, Negara sub-district, Jembrana district.</p><p>They were fished out of Bali waters about two kilometers away from the village and taken to Negara Public Hospital before being handed over to Basarnas in Banyuwangi, East Java, for identification, he said.</p><p>The first body was found by four fishermen, identified as Supardi, Saidin, Husnan, and Lukman, around 6 a.m. local time, he informed. 3202485	无图 Jakarta (ANTARA) - Sixteen Russian badminton players are participating in a two-week training camp at the Indonesian Badminton Association’s (PBSI’s) National Training Center in Cipayung, East Jakarta.</p><p>The joint training camp, which will run through July 21, 2025, has been organized under a bilateral sports cooperation program between Indonesia and Russia.</p><p>The first day of training on Wednesday lasted approximately three hours.</p><p>Though they arrived only the day before, the Russian athletes showed strong enthusiasm for replicating the training regimen followed by the Indonesian national team.</p><p>“Training here is very different. In Russia, we have just one coach for all disciplines, whereas here, each sector has its own coach. This really helps the players develop,” the manager of the Russian team, Pavel Sorokin, said at the PBSI National Training Center.</p><p>He added that though the Russian team appeared fatigued, they remained eager to take part in the intensive training sessions. He expressed the hope that the training will give the team valuable insights into technique, training rhythm, and a strong work ethic.</p><p>“We requested the training program that the Indonesian team usually follows, and are trying our best to adhere to it. This is an incredible experience, and we’re looking forward to the next two weeks,” he added.</p><p>The Russian team’s visit follows a meeting between the Russian delegation and PBSI in Jakarta in April this year and a reciprocal visit by PBSI chair M. Fadil Imran and his staff to St. Petersburg, Russia, in June.</p><p>During that visit, Indonesian athletes participated in a week of match training in Russia.</p><p>Now, the Russian team is experiencing the training environment at Indonesia’s badminton headquarters.</p><p>They include Alina Davletova and her teammates, who practiced under the guidance of Pratama squad coaches of the junior or development team within the national training system on Wednesday.</p><p>Men’s singles assistant coach Ihsan Maulana Mustofa, who helped oversee the session, observed that the Russian athletes have strong technical skills.</p><p>He added that improving technique and footwork will be the primary focus of the two-week camp.</p><p>“In terms of quality, they’re quite good. Today, we concentrated on their gameplay and the precision of their front and back strokes. 3202484	无图 Garut, West Java (ANTARA) - Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions Yandri Susanto has announced that starting in 2026, all village heads and officials across Indonesia will be required to undergo urine tests.</p><p>Susanto stated that this measure is part of the government’s strong commitment to strengthening the Drug-Free Village program.</p><p>“We have planned this starting next year, every village head and official will undergo urine testing,” he remarked during an event to promote the program in Sancang Village here on Wednesday.</p><p>He stressed that the program aims to ensure that no village apparatus is involved in drug abuse.</p><p>“This is important because we aim to develop villages not only in terms of physical infrastructure but also its human quality,” he remarked.</p><p>He emphasized that village development must also include efforts to strengthen social resilience, including efforts to eliminate drug abuse down to the smallest rural communities.</p><p>“We must say no to drugs, even at the lowest layers of our villages,” he affirmed.</p><p>Meanwhile, Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom, cautioned that drug distribution is no longer limited to urban areas but has also spread into rural regions.</p><p>According to BNN data, he reported that the number of drug users in Indonesia has reached 3.3 million people, or around 1.7 percent of the total population.</p><p>He noted that this figure is not merely a statistic but represents a dangerous social phenomenon that threatens national resilience.</p><p>“Some 3.3 million Indonesians are trapped in the grip of drug abuse. 3202483	无图 Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Social Affairs has readied around 9 thousand laptops to support students" learning at 100 government-backed, tuition-free schools under the Sekolah Rakyat program this year.</p><p>The ministry"s Secretary General, Robben Rico, noted that procurement of the laptops is planned based on the number of students in each school, so the total may increase.</p><p>"The number of students is around 9,700 for the first 100 schools," he remarked after monitoring the simulation of Sekolah Rakyat implementation at the Handayani Center of the Ministry of Social Affairs in Jakarta on Wednesday.</p><p>He emphasized that those laptops will be used by students during classroom learning activities and will not be taken to their dormitories.</p><p>Rico assured that each student will be able to use one laptop, without having to take turns during the learning process.</p><p>Regarding procurement, he explained that the laptops are reviewed by a team of experts to determine specifications that meet the students" learning needs, and that no specific laptop brand is being targeted.</p><p>As for internet network infrastructure, he stated that the ministry ensures each Sekolah Rakyat school is equipped with internet access to support the learning process.</p><p>Sekolah Rakyat is part of the government"s efforts to break the cycle of poverty in Indonesia, in line with Presidential Instruction Number 8 of 2025 on the Optimization of Poverty Alleviation and Extreme Poverty Eradication.</p><p>A total of 63 Sekolah Rakyat schools are set to begin operating on July 14, 2025. 3202482	无图 Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) has been tasked with overseeing and providing assistance to state-owned enterprises managed by the Danantara Indonesia Investment Management Agency.</p><p>This ministry’s task is stipulated in Law Number 1 of 2025 concerning the Third Amendment to Law Number 19 of 2003 concerning SOEs.</p><p>“So, we are indeed focused on assisting Danantara, but as a regulator, we are also negotiating with the government,” SOEs Minister Erick Thohir explained here on Tuesday.</p><p>The ministry is continuing to coordinate the appointment of directors and commissioners, approval of proposed agendas, general meetings of shareholders (GMS), and other matters at the SOEs.</p><p>Furthermore, the ministry will receive a dividend of 1 percent from Danantara, which will then be remitted to the state.</p><p>Thohir said that Danantara can only propose candidates for the posts of directors and commissioners of state-owned enterprises.</p><p>“We act as supervisors. Danantara conducts studies, and then we find the right solution. 3202481	无图 Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) is designed to assist teachers in their duties, not replace them.</p><p>“In the context of education, AI is not built to replace teachers, but rather to support them,” head of the ministry’s Center for Data and Information Technology, Yudhistira Nugraha, said during a discussion at Istiqlal Mosque here on Wednesday.</p><p>According to Nugraha, to effectively utilize AI in teaching, teachers need to master several stages.</p><p>The stages include identifying and understanding the information generated by AI, learning how to use AI, including creating prompts, applying them in the right context, and thinking critically about the responses provided by AI, he expounded.</p><p>He also advised teachers not to accept AI-generated content without verifying it. “We should not blindly accept everything AI says as true,” Nugraha stressed.</p><p>He then highlighted the importance of comparing outputs from different AI tools and using detailed prompts to ensure the accuracy and validity of the information they provide.</p><p>“There is the concept of prompt engineering. When we use precise prompts, we are more likely to get accurate results,” he added.</p><p>Concurring with Nugraha, chair of the implementation team of the National Information and Communication Technology Council (<i>Wantiknas</i>), Ilham Akbar Habibie, stressed that AI should be viewed as a tool to ease human tasks, not as a replacement for humans.</p><p>“AI should be used to help us, because it is only a tool. 3202479	无图 Jakarta (ANTARA) - <meta>The Wates Sub-district Veterinary Center (BBV Wates) under the Ministry of Agriculture has developed digital systems to support early disease detection in animals, ensure their effective treatment, and provide fast, transparent, and adaptive services to them.</p><p>“This digital service innovation responds to public needs, and (seeks) to strengthen BBV Wates’ synergy with the community,” Head of the ministry’s bureau of communications and information services, Mohammad Arief Cahyono, said in a statement released by the ministry on Wednesday.</p><p>He emphasized that integrating technology with veterinary laboratory services would not only strengthen the early warning system but also support the national food self-sufficiency program.</p><p>He explained that public services for animal health are not only using technology, but also seeking to fulfill the shared commitment to protect farmers and ensure a sustainable supply of animal-based food products.</p><p>BBV Wates head Hendra Wibawa said that the center has developed two new digital systems: SiDARA (Laboratory Information and Analysis System) and SIAP-PAK (Animal Disease Information and Mapping System).</p><p>He informed that the two systems enable real-time access to lab test data from across regions.</p><p>“These systems enable more accurate animal health monitoring while improving preparedness for potential outbreaks,” he explained.</p><p>Meanwhile, assistant for report review at the Indonesian Ombudsman’s Yogyakarta Representative Office, Muhammad Rifki Taufikurrahman, said that prioritizing digital approaches in public service is important to ensure efficient and transparent services.</p><p>“Information must be easily accessible, not just manually, but also digitally. 3202478	无图 Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Industry Ministry has been consistently promoting the domestic essential oil downstreaming industry as part of efforts to seize the ever-growing opportunities in the sector.</p><p>The ministry’s inspector general, Mohammad Rum, said here on Wednesday that in 2024, the global market value of essential oil grew 10 percent compared to the year before. This growth is expected to continue as people become more interested in eco-friendly products.</p><p>Trends like green beauty and clean labels, and the demand for organic and traceable products, have prompted Indonesia to pursue strategic efforts to carve a place in the global supply chain, he added.</p><p>He said that Indonesia ranks eighth globally in essential oil exports, accounting for 4.12 percent of the total market value. However, he highlighted that most of the goods exported by the country are raw materials.</p><p>“Hence, downstreaming becomes urgently needed, so that so added value of this sector can (benefit) the nation and strengthen national industry (and) make it capable of competing (globally),” he explained.</p><p>Top Indonesian commodities such as patchouli and clove serve as basic materials in the global perfumery and wellness scene, he pointed out. According to him, they can be optimized further.</p><p>Other commodities that could boost exports are nutmeg oil, sandalwood, citronella, he said.</p><p>Indonesia has around three thousand distillation facilities, including in Aceh, West Sumatra, Central Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua, he noted.</p><p>The total national essential oil production is capped at 26,398 tons annually, with 200 thousand people engaged in the industry. 3202477	有图 <p> Autori: <p> Nicoletta Pirozzi </p> </p> <p> 09/07/2025 </p> <p> <p> <p>Following the geopolitical earthquake generated by the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the European Union has taken the historical decision to open its doors to Kyiv – together with Moldova and possibly Georgia. Inviting Ukraine to join the EU has been a direct consequence of the return of war on the European continent and the menace against European security coming from Moscow. This has helped shift the EU’s approach to enlargement, injecting new dynamism into it. In fact, in the European Council conclusions of December 2023, enlargement has been defined as “a geo-strategic investment in peace, security, stability and prosperity”.[1]</p><p>Nevertheless, although both Ukraine and the EU are committed to ensuring a successful accession process, Ukraine’s journey to join the Union will be neither simple nor quick and will necessitate ongoing political commitment from both parties. The Ukrainian administration must prove that it can carry out the essential reforms, particularly regarding effective democratic institutions and a robust rule of law. The EU, on its part, needs to undertake a series of actions – carefully planned and decisively executed – concerning its immediate, medium-term and long-term strategies.</p><p>The status of the accession process</p><p>Following the granting of candidate status in June 2022, the European Council in December 2023 gave its green light to start accession negotiations, which began in June 2024. Since then, negotiations have progressed smoothly at the technical level. The latest European Council on 26 June 2025 has commended Ukraine for the pace of its accession-related reforms and welcomed the significant progress achieved.[2]</p><p>Meanwhile, in May, the European Commission has assessed that the first negotiations cluster related to the so-called ‘fundamentals’ of shared values, rule of law, independent judiciary and human rights is ready to be opened.[3] However, Hungary has then blocked the opening of the cluster, primarily over complaints about discrimination against ethnic-Hungarian minorities in Ukraine, and lately referring to the results of a national self-styled referendum on Ukraine’s EU accession, according to which 95 per cent of surveyed citizens – approximately around 29 per cent of Hungary’s eligible electorate – are against it.[4] This has stopped the process at the political level, wiping out the EU and Ukraine’s initial optimistic timeline for opening three of the six chapters – related to fundamentals, internal market and external relations – by the first semester of 2025, under the rotating Polish Presidency of the EU Council.[5]</p><p>On the Ukrainian side, reforms are ongoing in different fields to meet the EU’s criteria and advance the accession process. In the rule of law domain, efforts are focused on strengthening legal institutions, further improving the judiciary, enhancing the effectiveness of anti-corruption policy, improving human rights protection, and reinforcing security and law enforcement.[6] Kyiv has also embarked on an ambitious public administration reform for further modernisation, digitalisation and improved accessibility of public services.[7]</p><p>Ukraine has also worked to advance its energy transition in order to align with EU standards. Ukraine’s National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) targets a full coal phase-out by 2035. It also aims to improve energy efficiency, enhance energy security by limiting overdependence on single suppliers, and foster innovation through smart grids and green technologies.[8] Kyiv also finalised a Roadmap and Action Plans for the green recovery and transformation of the country’s food industry, aiming to guiding its transition toward a more climate-resilient, competitive and EU-aligned model.[9] Nevertheless, the reform process remains fraught with challenges, many of which are intensified by the ongoing war.</p><p>Supporting Ukraine’s accession path through economy and security</p><p>Securing Ukraine’s path towards the EU means first and foremost to help Kyiv address its most urgent security needs. The second Trump presidency has put additional pressure on the EU to provide adequate support for Ukraine’s resistance against the Russian invasion, in particular through sanctions and by providing military hardware. If the EU wants to remain a credible partner for Ukraine – despite the US’s declared disengagement – it has to keep a united stance and put additional pressure on President Putin to agree on an unconditional ceasefire and engage in meaningful negotiations. Political unity has been preserved so far, despite attempts to jeopardise it mainly coming from Budapest. In fact, in the latest European Council’s meetings, conclusions on Ukraine had to be adopted at 26, without Hungary.[10]</p><p>Notably, even if the EU’s sectoral sanctions against Russia have been extended for another six months, Hungary and Slovakia have blocked the adoption of the 18th package of restrictive measures, declaredly due to energy security concerns. This new package would include a transaction ban for EU operators regarding Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2, a lower price cap on oil from 60 to 45 dollars per barrel, sanctions on refined fuel imports from third countries, and penalties on the Nord Stream pipeline infrastructure, but also a full transaction ban on the Russian banking sector and financial operators in third countries that finance trade to Russia, as well as widening export bans and controls to tackle circumvention practices.[11]</p><p>Furthermore, the EU has to mobilise additional and collective financial capacity to equip Kyiv with the necessary weapons to counter the ongoing Russian offensive. Since March, the European contributions (led by the Nordics and the UK) have filled the gap left by the US,[12] but there are uncertainties about the future. Urgent needs include, in particular, the delivery of air defence and anti-drone systems, and large-calibre ammunition.</p><p>In the medium term, hopefully after a successful defence of Ukraine followed by the beginning of a negotiated settlement with Russia from an advantageous position, the greatest challenge for Europe would be to ensure the reconstruction of the battered country. It has been calculated that Ukraine would need 524 billion dollars over the next decade to get back on its feet.[13] And most of the burden would have to be borne by the EU. The Union is Ukraine’s largest donor and is committed to providing Kyiv with regular and predictable financial support. In 2025, the European Union will provide Ukraine with 30.6 billion euros, of which 3.5 billion have already been disbursed under the Ukraine Facility. In addition, 7 billion euros have been allocated under the G7-led Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) loans initiative, which is repaid by the windfall profits stemming from immobilised Russian assets[14] and overall aims to provide approximately 45 billion euros in financial support to Ukraine.</p><p>This commitment would require a mobilisation of funds well beyond the European governments’ capacity. One way to do this is to involve a broad range of stakeholders, including international organisations and financial institutions, business and civil society organisations, and to rely on public-private partnerships. This is the approach behind the Ukraine Recovery Conference to be held in Rome on 10-11 July 2025.</p><p>But Ukraine’s accession to the EU will likely be a long-lasting process that requires the Union to strategise long-term. First of all, the EU would need to give Ukraine adequate security guarantees until its accession, when it will be covered by the mutual defence clause provided by article 42(7) of the Treaty of the European Union. In the meantime, Kyiv has to be put in the position to defend itself effectively. This could be done through a reinforced European Peace Facility to fund Kyiv’s defence capacities, but also through civilian and military missions with mandates that include the advisory, training, and equipping of Ukrainian security and military forces and relevant institutions and agencies.</p><p>Preparing the EU for Ukraine</p><p>Simultaneously, if the EU aims to turn Ukraine’s accession into a success story and learn from past mistakes, it must undertake a challenging reform process concerning both its enlargement policy and internal operations.</p><p>With respect to the enlargement policy, integrating Ukraine (and potentially other nations from the Western Balkans and Eastern neighbourhood) will require greater flexibility. Possible actions might include granting access to the European single market as an initial step toward EU membership, providing progressive access to the EU’s structural funds during the pre-accession phase or allowing Ukrainian representatives to participate in European institutions.</p><p>From an internal perspective, in addition to institutional reforms, expanding the EU to Ukraine raises issues related to the redistribution of the EU budget and funding for both the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). In fact, Ukraine’s membership would result in a decrease in the EU’s GDP per capita, necessitating adjustments to budget allocations, including Cohesion Funds. Notably, Kyiv would emerge as the main beneficiary of the CAP, which allocates funds based on the area of cultivated land, amounting to approximately 85 billion euros, according to estimates from Bruegel.[15] Therefore, reforming budgetary regulations, particularly concerning the CAP, appears essential.</p><p>In all, securing Kyiv’s path towards the EU undoubtedly entails a number of challenges for both sides, including progressing in the reform process to align the country with EU standards, equipping it economically and militarily to sustain the war effort with a view to reaching a just and sustainable peace as well as developing a plan for post-war reconstruction. The enlargement process, moreover, will put additional pressure on the EU to implement the necessary reforms in its decision-making system and sectoral policies.</p><p>At the same time, Ukraine’s European future is an essential element for European security. Kyiv’s integration is the best and surest way to avoid having a perennial, dangerous competition with a revanchist Russia over influence on Ukraine, or to avoid the risk of Ukraine becoming an unmanageable and extremely dangerous failed State in the neighbourhood. Moreover, the reconstruction efforts also make sense from the economic point of view, as they offer the opportunity for expanding and modernising the EU’s business sector in all areas, from energy to technology and agriculture. The effort of integrating Ukraine into the EU, therefore, is soundly justified from all points of view. 3202475	无图 <p> <p>Passengers can now keep their shoes on at TSA security checkpoints</p><p>WASHINGTON—Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced a new policy today which will allow passengers traveling through domestic airports to keep their shoes on while passing through security screening at TSA checkpoints.</p><p>The new policy will increase hospitality for travelers and streamline the TSA security checkpoint process, leading to lower wait times.</p><p>“Ending the ‘Shoes-Off’ policy is the latest effort DHS is implementing to modernize and enhance traveler experience across our nation’s airports,” said Secretary Noem. “We expect this change will drastically decrease passenger wait times at our TSA checkpoints, leading to a more pleasant and efficient passenger experience. As always, security remains our top priority. Thanks to our cutting-edge technological advancements and multi-layered security approach, we are confident we can implement this change while maintaining the highest security standards. This initiative is just one of many the Trump administration is pursuing to usher in the President’s vision for a new Golden Age of American travel.”</p><p>Other aspects of TSA’s layered security approach will still apply during the TSA checkpoint process. For example, passengers subject must still clear identity verification, Secure Flight vetting, and other processes.</p><p>Ending the “Shoes-Off” policy is the latest in a series of changes DHS has implemented since the Trump administration entered office. On July 2nd, TSA announced its “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” program which provides special benefits to uniformed service members and their families, including a TSA PreCheck enrollment discount and expedited access lanes at select airports. 3202474	无图 <p> <p>After many previous requests to hand over relevant information concerning foreign students, DHS will now send subpoenas forcing Harvard to comply</p><p>WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would send administrative subpoenas to Harvard University regarding its Student Visitor and Exchange Program.</p><p>This comes after the university repeatedly refused past non-coercive requests to hand over the required information for its Student Visitor and Exchange Program certification.</p><p>“We tried to do things the easy way with Harvard. Now, through their refusal to cooperate, we have to do things the hard way,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Harvard, like other universities, has allowed foreign students to abuse their visa privileges and advocate for violence and terrorism on campus. If Harvard won’t defend the interests of its students, then we will.” Given the allegations of disciplinary disparity involving nonimmigrant students, the documents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) demand that Harvard turn over relevant records, communications, and other documents relevant to the enforcement of immigration laws since January 1, 2020.</p><p>On April 16, 2025, Secretary Noem demanded Harvard provide information about the criminality and misconduct of foreign students on its campus. Secretary Noem warned refusal to comply with this lawful order would result in SEVP termination. On May 22, she ordered DHS to terminate the Harvard University’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification.</p><p>As Secretary Noem explained in a recent op-ed at the Washington Post, Harvard was given multiple chances to submit the requested information voluntarily and on its own timeline. May their souls rest in peace.” he said</p><p>To address the backlog, he said, the government set up two committees to review and recommend payments.</p><p>“Despite the economic and social challenges we met on assumption of office, we prioritized clearing three months of unpaid salaries and allowances.</p><p>“ We also settled long-standing entitlements for judges and judiciary staff,” he added.</p><p>The governor highlighted sweeping reforms in civil service welfare under his administration. Among them was the implementation of the N30,000 national minimum wage, which had been ignored by previous administrations. He noted that when he assumed office, the minimum wage in Zamfara was just N7,000.</p><p>“In July 2024, we reviewed and implemented the new national minimum wage of N70,000,” he stated. “This means that within two years, we increased the minimum wage in Zamfara from N7,000 to N70,000.”</p><p>Other measures introduced include Sallah bonuses and an end-of-year productivity bonus—also referred to as the 13th-month salary—for all civil and public servants as well as political office holders. “These are unprecedented steps in Zamfara’s history,” Governor Lawal said, adding that they have helped restore confidence among public workers and renewed trust in government.</p><p>The governor said the state is ready to partner with licensed pension fund administrators in line with ongoing pension reforms.</p><p>As part of these reforms, he inaugurated the Contributory Pension Implementation Committee tasked with overseeing the transition to a new pension structure.</p><p>The new committee will work closely with the Ministry of Justice, the Zamfara State Pension Commission, and other stakeholders to review and update the state’s pension law for legislative approval. 3202463	有图 <p>Tragedy struck in the Choba area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, over the weekend when a pregnant 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), identified as Cynthia Chukwundah, allegedly burnt her boyfriend, Sunny Amadi (32), to death.</p><p>While the exact circumstances leading to Cynthia’s actions are unclear, some neighbours told Daily Trust it might have resulted from a minor argument between the couple.</p> <p>It was gathered that the deceased is the father of the child Cynthia is carrying.</p><p>SPONSOR AD</p> <p>Residents of the area reported that Cynthia, who fled the scene immediately after the incident, was later arrested by the police operatives and she is also receiving treatment for burns she sustained during the incident.</p> NAFDAC raids warehouse containing N1bn worth of expired chemicals in Lagos 3 arrested for allegedly stealing trailer loaded with cement<p>The incident, which occurred a few minutes after 11pm, saw some public-spirited neighbours rush the deceased to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) for medical treatment, where he unfortunately died.</p><p>The police spokesperson in Rivers State, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday.</p><p>She stated that Cynthia is currently receiving treatment at a hospital due to injuries sustained during the incident.</p><p>Due to her critical condition, she is currently unable to provide a detailed account of the incident but will do so once her condition is stable.</p><p>SP Iringe-Koko’s statement read:</p><p>“The Rivers State Police Command is aware of and deeply concerned about a report depicting a fire incident that occurred at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Port Harcourt.</p><p>“According to the report, one Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level female undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt, allegedly set her boyfriend, one Saint Sunny Amadi, a 32-year-old male from Elibrada community in Emohua LGA, ablaze in a room, resulting in severe injuries.</p><p>‘’He was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) for medical treatment.</p><p>“Upon receiving the report at about 1112 hours, police detectives from Choba Division promptly visited the scene and the victim, who was in critical condition at the hospital. ‘’Unfortunately, the victim later succumbed to injuries and died while on admission.</p><p>“The police have located Cynthia, who is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital due to injuries she also sustained during the incident.</p><p>‘’She is also heavily pregnant with the deceased’s child. Due to her critical condition, she is unable to provide a detailed account of the incident but will do so when her condition is stable.</p><p>“The probable cause of the fire incident is yet to be ascertained, and a thorough investigation has been launched to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. They allege that the actions breach the Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution (as amended).</p><p>Legal experts and political commentators have warned that such premature activities undermine democracy, the rule of law and electoral discipline.</p><p>The billboards, prominently displayed at strategic locations in Abuja, feature Tinubu alongside inscriptions promoting him for re-election in 2027. One major billboard was reportedly sponsored by the Grassroots Mobilisation Group, which campaigned actively for Tinubu during the 2023 elections. Others were said to have been sponsored by Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), who is calling for mass mobilisation for Tinubu’s re-election, especially along Airport Road in Abuja.</p><p>While President Tinubu has not formally declared his intention to contest in 2027, he has already been endorsed as the sole candidate for the election by his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).</p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer">president tinubu’s campaign posters along airport road, federal capital territory (fct), abuja<p>Presidency’s earlier warning</p><p>Fresh efforts to get the reaction of the Presidency on the renewed spread of campaign materials were unsuccessful, as the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, and the Special Adviser on Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, could not be reached by phone.</p><p>However, in an earlier interview with Daily Trust, Onanuga said President Tinubu had not endorsed the individuals or groups putting up the posters and billboards in his name.</p><p>“We are also warning them that the president does not endorse all that they are doing (those putting posters); that is why there was a statement to that effect. The president is not in support of those erecting billboards. The president is lawful; he wants to stick to the law and wants people to obey the law. But he cannot stop people from doing what they are doing,” he said.</p><p>Daily Trust recalls that on April 13, the Presidency issued a statement distancing itself from the billboards promoting Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 elections.</p><p>“While President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima greatly appreciate their teeming and loyal supporters for their enthusiasm, the two leaders do not support any campaign that violates the laws of the land,” Onanuga had said.</p><p>He stressed that the Electoral Act prohibits premature campaigning and warned that such actions could distort the electoral process and create unfair advantages.</p><p>He added that the president had not authorised any individual or group to initiate a 2027 campaign through any medium—whether out-of-home, print, digital, radio, or television.</p><p>“Therefore, we urgently call on individuals and groups funding this 2027 political campaign through the ongoing deployment of materials on billboards nationwide to cease immediately,” he said.</p><p>Despite the warning, the posters and billboards have remained in place, with new ones reportedly erected.</p><p>Though not legally wrong, president bears moral responsibility – Senior Advocate</p><p>Commenting on the matter, Nwoko Uwemedimo (SAN) described the situation as “concerning”, noting that the Presidency has remained silent since the initial caution, despite the increasing visibility of campaign materials.</p><p>“What can be presumed is that the Presidency either approves of it or is deliberately turning a blind eye. Ironically, since that directive, the volume of these materials has increased, almost as though the warning was a green light to escalate the activity,” he added.</p><p>Uwemedimo, a Uyo-based legal expert, said that while there is no evidence directly linking Tinubu to the campaign materials, he could not be absolved of moral responsibility.</p><p>“Legally, the president is not in violation of the Electoral Act because there’s no proof he authorised or endorsed the posters. He has not held any campaign rally. It’s even possible that political opponents are behind the posters to get at him. The law only prohibits official campaigning before INEC lifts the ban, which he has not done,” he explained.</p><p>However, Uwemedimo insisted that the president bears moral responsibility.</p><p>“As president, he owes Nigerians the duty of setting a good example. Even if he is legally right, morally, he should have condemned the posters. If the federal government wanted to identify those responsible, intelligence services could do so within 24 hours. Their inaction suggests deliberate indifference,” he said.</p><p>Also speaking, Timothy Ashaolu (SAN) said the president’s earlier warning reflects his awareness of constitutional provisions but emphasised that those putting up the posters are acting independently.</p><p>“We cannot hold the president responsible. He has not violated any electoral law,” he maintained.</p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer">a bus with the photograph of president tinubu and his wife, oluremi at area 1, abuja.<p>Atiku’s campaign banners sighted in Kano</p><p>Daily Trust reports that the campaign banners of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were also sighted at the weekend around the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.</p><p>Recall that Atiku visited Kano on Sunday, July 6, 2025, to offer condolences over the death of Alhaji Aminu Dantata. Ahead of his arrival, some of his loyalists erected giant banners along the airport road, especially near the Babangwari roundabout.</p><p>On his arrival, the supporters, who lined up to welcome him also raised his posters, calling on him to contest for the presidency in 2027.</p><p>A resident of Kano, who works at the airport, said some of the banners were erected on Saturday and were left by the roadside for about two days.</p><p>“I saw the banners; they were not billboards, they were temporary in design just to show the former vice president that he has admirers.</p><p>“They were all removed after he came back to the airport, on his way back to Abuja,” he said.</p><p>One of our correspondents who visited the airport yesterday also saw Atiku’s name written on the tarred road leading to the airport, even though all banners have been removed. One of the writings on the road read: ‘Atiku 2027’.</p><p>INEC must return to warning politicians – Prof Saliu</p><p>President of the Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA), Professor Hassan Saliu, said ideally, INEC should have already announced a timeline for electioneering, describing politicking as one of the most vibrant industries in Nigeria.</p><p>“According to the Electoral Act, the time for politicking has not yet arrived. But Nigerian politicians often disregard laws. So, what is happening is not surprising,” he said.</p><p>On INEC’s role, Prof. Saliu argued that the political environment is highly polarised and that the commission itself is viewed with suspicion.</p><p>He urged the electoral umpire to revisit its past tradition of issuing public warnings to politicians.</p><p>“Beyond the moral weight of such a release, INEC may find it difficult to prosecute anyone.
