This will provide access to cheaper household rates, allowing consumers to save up to £1,500 a year compared to running a petrol or diesel car, transforming how thousands of households without driveways power up their electric cars.</p><p>The innovative cross-pavement technology will allow cables to run safely beneath pavements, connecting homes directly to parked vehicles, enabling more families to tap into cheaper domestic electricity rates for as little as 2 pence per mile even if they don’t have a driveway.</p><p><img src="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/68712cdba08d3a3ca3b67b16/cable-gully.svg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></p><p>The fund is the latest move to bolster the UK’s growing charging network which has reached a record 82,000 public chargepoints, with a further 100,000 expected to be installed as a result of the government’s Local EV Infrastructure Fund and £6 billion of private investment committed to 2030.</p><p>To ensure the savings the EV transition can bring are felt in the public sector too, the NHS in England is also receiving a major sustainability upgrade with an £8 million fund to power the electrification of ambulances and medical fleets across over 200 NHS sites, saving millions in costs which can be invested into patient care.</p><p><img src="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/68720ccb10d550c668de3ef8/ambulance-960.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></p><p>See a list of NHS trusts that are receiving funding to install electric vehicle chargepoints.</p><p>Standing firmly on the side of British drivers, this latest investment is part of our major plan to support motorists, including a record £1.6 billion invested to tackle potholes and bring down and frozen fuel duty at 5p until Spring 2026, saving the average motorist £50 to £60 over the year.</p><p>This investment underpins the government’s Plan for Change mission to kickstart economic growth and make life easier for working people, ensuring the transition to net zero delivers for working families whilst creating good jobs and driving economic growth across all regions of the UK.</p><p>Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said:</p> <p>We are making it easier and cheaper to own an electric vehicle. We know access to charging is a barrier for people thinking of making the switch, so we are tackling that head on so that everyone - whether or not they have a driveway - can access the benefits of going electric.</p> <p>Our investment is about more than just charging points – it’s about charging up Britain’s economy. I’m proud that through this boost, we are helping deliver cheaper bills for families, massive savings for the NHS to reinvest in patient care, and thousands of new green jobs.</p> <p>This is whatour Plan for Change mission to kickstart Britain’seconomy looks like in practice. We’re not just boosting charging infrastructure, we’re building a fairer, cleaner future where every family can benefit from cheaper, greener transport, whilst creating thousands of good jobs across the country.</p><p>In a pioneering move to help EV drivers plug into the rapidly expanding charging network, government is also modernising EV charging signage on major roads. EV charging hubs have more than doubled since the beginning of 2023 and immediate changes will allow larger EV charging hubs to be signposted from major A-roads for the first time. Government is committed to boosting charging for long journeys, with £400 million announced in the Spending Review to support charging infrastructure, including on the strategic road network.</p><p>Alongside the boosts for electric car drivers, the government is also launching a major new grant scheme to help businesses install charging points at depots nationwide, supporting the nation’s heavy goods vehicles, vans and coach drivers in the transition to zero emissions.</p><p>The action follows recentupdates to the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandateto make it easier for the sector to switch to electric as part of government’s ongoing work to back British manufacturing. With over 1.2 million people employed in the freight and logistics sector in the UK alone, today’s announcement is the latest move to keep industry at the forefront of international competition in the face of global economic headwinds.</p><p>Over 1,200 new charging sockets will deliver a more efficient, modern health system whilst generating millions in cost savings over the next two decades for the taxpayer on maintenance and fuel costs – valuable savings that can be prioritised for patient care and help rebuild the NHS.</p><p>Owning and buying an EV is becoming increasingly cheaper, with2 in 5of used electric cars sold at under £20,000 and34brand new electric cars are available from under £30,000.</p><p>The UK was also the largest EV market in Europe in 2024 and the third in the world with over 382,000 EVs sold – up a fifth on the previous year. There are now more than82,000 public chargepoints in the UK – with one added every30minutes – ensuring that motorists are always a short drive from a socket.</p><p>Health Minister Karin Smyth said:</p> <p>This is a win-win: cheaper travel for the NHS and cleaner air for our communities.</p> <p>As part of our Plan for Change, we’re investing in green energy to build an NHS fit for the future — cutting pollution and saving millions in fuel costs.</p><p>Edmund King, AA president,said:</p> <p>There are more public chargers than people realise, but they are often hidden in plain sight. Government also announces over £300 million of investment for specific auto projects, supporting the UK’s thousands of high-value manufacturing jobs and delivering on the Plan for Change.<p>UK auto firms will benefit from a £2.5 billion commitment over the next decade that will support thousands of jobs and help ensure the UK remains at the forefront of zero-emission vehicle development.</p><p>Government is today announcing the launch of DRIVE35, comprising new and improved funding competitions that will support UK businesses. The programme will fund a wide spectrum of projects which help the transition to zero-emission vehicle manufacturing - targeting established high-volume manufacturing and multi-billion-pound gigafactories, all the way to start-ups, prototypes and cutting-edge automotive innovation.</p><p>The new programme was announced in the Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan, part of the UK’s modern Industrial Strategy. It will commit £2 billion in funding to 2030 alongside an additional £500m for research and development to 2035, signalling a ten-year commitment to UK automotive innovation.</p><p>The cash will provide certainty to the sector, give innovators the confidence to invest in the UK and will support the latest in research and development, unlocking capital investment in zero emission vehicles, batteries and their supply chains. </p><p>The automotive sector contributed £21.4 billion in GVA to the economy in 2024 and currently employs 132,000 people across all parts of the UK – including many highly-skilled, highly-paid roles, and apprenticeships. The transition to zero emissions is the biggest opportunity of the 21st century to attract investment, harness British innovation, and deliver growth for generations to come.</p><p>TheUKwas also the largestEVmarket in Europe in 2024 and the third in the world with over 382,000EVssold – up a fifth on the previous year. This includes securing a landmark trade deal with the US to bring down tariffs for British car manufacturers, measures in our modern Industrial Strategy to lower electricity prices and updating the ZEV mandate, supporting UK manufacturers to safeguard jobs, and secure the future of the sector.</p> <p>Economic growth is our number one priority, and by funding our world leading auto sector we are creating the right conditions for increased investment, bringing growth, jobs, and opportunities to every part of the UK.</p><p>The funding announced today forms part of government’s bold ambition to significantly increase business investment in the advanced manufacturing sector by 2035, giving British firms an edge in the frontier industries of the future and driving growth across the UK.  </p><p>DRIVE35 will build on previous successes with the Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) and the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) R&D competitions, which between them leveraged over £6 billion of investmentfrom the private sector, creating thousands of jobs across the UK economy.</p><p>The Department for Business and Trade today also announces over £300 million for specific UK automotive manufacturing firms and projects. This includes over £100 million of capital investment for UK automotive manufacturing via the ATF, approximately £140 million in combined Government and industry R&D investment, and £18 million from the new £150m Connected & Automated Mobility (CAM) Pathfinder programme.</p><p>With Government support, Bolton is set to benefit from over £100 million in investment from Astemo Ltd., which will be vital to the production of electric vehicle (EV) components in the UK. This investment will produce new generations of electric inverters, supporting over 220 direct high-value jobs in the region and hundreds more in the wider UK supply chain.</p><p>The West Midlands will also welcome a recent £15 million investment from Dana to produce parts that are crucial for EV manufacturing. Dana’s investment will ensure skilled jobs in the region, supporting over 100 direct jobs over the long term. </p><p>Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive said:</p> <p>The creation of this dedicated automotive programme is further evidence of the sector’s importance to economic growth. Delivered as part of the Industrial Strategy, DRIVE35 has the potential to unlock investment and innovation in the UK, supporting jobs and creating wealth across the country. The importance of a long term, cross-government strategy with specific measures for automotive cannot be understated given the challenges facing the sector amid geopolitical uncertainty and fierce global competition. Through targeted investment for successful project applicants, the programme will create tens of thousands of new jobs, stimulate billions in economic growth and investment, and cut millions of tonnes CO2 emissions.</p><p>The programme will provide a more impactful offering for investors across three streamlined pillars: Transformation, Scale Up and Innovation. Tomorrow the government will open the following competitions across the DRIVE35 programme:</p> Automotive Transformation Fund: A new and improved capital funding offer under DRIVE35’s keystone Transformation pillar, supporting large-scale capital investments in the UK, and now with a widened technology scope. Scale Up Feasibility Studies: R&D funding to support businesses with strategic thinking on opportunities to scale, creating a pipeline of exciting decision-ready auto projects for UK investment. Innovation competitions: Through DRIVE35’s Collaborate and Demonstrate streams, we will build on over a decade of success to support both early-stage and late-stage R&D projects involving innovative technologies and processes.<p>DRIVE35 will continue the successes of the UK’s world-leading achievements in R&D. As an example, this government has recently committed a combined £70 million of R&D grant funding for over 50 innovative automotive projects.The programme will be delivered by DBT in partnership with APC UK and Innovate UK.</p><p>Combined with industry funding, this totals £140 million in new investment for UK R&D. 3206708	无图 <p>At around 16:14 on 22 June 2025, a tram operating on the Sheffield Supertram network was involved in a collision with two pedestrians on a crossing at Staniforth Road, Sheffield. The tram was travelling at around 15 mph (25 km/h) at the time of the collision. The pedestrians, who were young people, were both injured in the accident, one of them seriously.</p><p>The crossing is situated just to the south of the road junction where Woodbourn Road meets Staniforth Road. At the time of the accident, the two pedestrians, who had previously travelled north along Woodbourn Road, were moving eastwards over the crossing.</p><p>The road junction is protected by road traffic lights and tram signals, while signs and road markings inform crossing users of the presence of trams and instruct them to look both ways. Users approaching the crossing from Woodbourn Road are separated from the tramway by a fence. This is around 44 metres long and ends at the crossing.</p><p>Our investigation will seek to identify the sequence of events which led to the incident. It will also consider:</p> the actions of those involved and the factors that may have influenced them the audibility of warnings to users by trams at such crossings the instruction and assessment of tram drivers the management of risk at this crossing and the wider strategy of South Yorkshire Future Tram Ltd (the operator of the Supertram system) for identifying, assessing and mitigating risks at crossings such as that at Staniforth Road any underlying management factors.<p>Our investigation is independent of any investigation by the tramway industry or by the industry’s regulator, theOffice of Rail and Road.</p><p>We will publish our findings, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of our investigation. 3206705	无图 <p>The first round of negotiations on an enhanced Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Turkey took place in Ankara between 23 June and 2 July 2025.</p><p>The UK and Turkey have a strong economic relationship, with trade between the two totalling around £28 billion in 2024, making Turkey the UK’s 16th largest trading partner. Trade with Turkey’s growing market of 86 million people directly supported around 57,100 jobs across the UK in 2020. </p><p>Economic growth is our first mission in government and FTAs have an important role to play in achieving this. The UK is the second largest services exporter in the world, but in 2024 only 34% of UK exports to Turkey were services. A stronger trade relationship with this fast-growing economy will unlock new opportunities for UK businesses and contribute to jobs and prosperity in the UK.</p><p>Negotiations during round one were constructive, with both countries working towards agreeing ambitious outcomes in key areas. Discussions covered sustainability and collaboration, including Women’s Economic Empowerment and Labour rights, as well as the regulatory environments of both countries. Productive discussions were also held on Trade in Services, including Digital, Financial and Professional Business Services.</p><p>The UK’s existing FTA with Turkey replicates the effect of the EU-Turkey Customs Union. Industrial products are already fully liberalised and agricultural goods are partially liberalised. 3206704	无图 <p>The Environment Agency has successfully prosecuted Welsh Water for breaking conditions of an environmental permit at a Herefordshire sewage treatment works 7 times in a 5 month period.</p><p>At Kidderminster Magistrates Court on 11 July 2025, Welsh Water was fined £24,000 for exceeding permitted levels of sewage effluent from the Clehonger Sewage Treatment Works near Hereford. The company was also ordered to pay costs of £11,835.86 and a surcharge of £181.</p><p>Sewage treatment works treat raw sewage to produce an effluent which is discharged without damaging the local watercourse. At Clehonger, the water is discharged into the Cage Brook which is a tributary of the River Wye.</p><p>The court was told that officers from the Environment Agency were alerted to an issue following routine sampling results in November 2020.</p><p>The environmental permit states that Welsh Water must not discharge effluent containing more than 18 milligrams/litre of ammonia on more than 2 occasions in a 12-month period.</p><p>Results showed that in a 5 month period from 23 November 2020 to 17 April 2021 the limit had been exceeded 7 times ranging from 18.2 mg/l to 26.2 mg/l.</p><p>Officials from Welsh Water told the Environment Agency that the company was aware of additional loading coming into the site from a new development.</p><p>In mitigation, Welsh Water said that it had spent a significant amount of money to improve the infrastructure at the site. 3206700	无图 Site is home to vast peatland habitats, lizards, adder, and curlew New reserve falls on the doorstep of urban communities in Warrington and Greater Manchester, giving 2.7 million people the opportunity to access nature within 10 miles of their homes<p>Ten thousand years in the making and launched today (Monday 14 July), the new Risley, Holcroft and Chat Moss National Nature Reserve will provide a destination for the people of Warrington and Greater Manchester to access nature-rich landscapes. </p><p>The newest addition under the King’s Series, this network of 11 sites from lowland raised bogs and fen, through to lowland heath, wet woodland and drier woodland habitats will be restored to provide homes for rare species, such as lapwings, curlew, sundew and adders.</p><p>After being at the centre of the industrial revolution, this area is becoming a leading example of nature recovery, through the restoration of some of our most important and precious habitats.</p><p>The peatlands in this area were created over a period of 10,000 years, since the last Ice Age, and now heavily degraded. Peatlands are a hugely important part of England’s natural environment. They act as the country’s lungs, storing more carbon than any other type of landscape, as well as holding huge amounts of water and preventing flooding around them. However, more than 80% of England’s peatlands are damaged, dried out or degraded with the majority of England’s lowland peat being intensively farmed. </p><p>These internationally important lowland peat habitats, which are over an area the size of 750 professional rugby pitches or 25 Trafford Centres, are being restored. This will help mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect the security and prosperity of communities in Warrington and Greater Manchester.</p>Tony Juniper, Chair of Natural England, said:<p>“This part of England led the world in industrial innovation and today it shows leadership in Nature recovery. New National Nature Reserves deliver on our promise to improve access to nature and protect nature-rich habitats, such as peatlands.”</p><p>The deep lowland peat within this National Nature Reserve was degraded through drainage and peat cutting, damage which accelerated during the industrial revolution. The Greater Manchester Better Outcomes Partnership (GMBOP), for example, works with young adults in the Greater Manchester area who are at risk of homelessness.</p><p>AllChild’s projects have already halved persistent school absences, and 80% of children have improved emotional wellbeing. Other programmes like the Skill Mill offer paid work experience and qualifications, reducing reconviction rates from 63% typically to 8% and three quarters of those in the programme progress to further employment, education or training.</p><p>This fund is a big step in the government’s work with the impact economy - unlocking extra resources from philanthropy, social investors and businesses to tackle urgent social challenges. 3206697	无图 <p>Jacob Corrie [31] from Carlisle has had his sentence increased by four years after it was referred to the Court of Appeal by the Solicitor General, Lucy Rigby KC MP, under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.</p><p>The court heard that Corrie met his first victim over social media when he was 19. Corrie sexually abused the vulnerable boy, who Corrie knew was 14 years old, over two years between 2013 and 2015. Corrie also sent sexual messages via social media.</p><p>Corrie sexually abused the second teenager in 2013, before threatening her not to tell anyone. After the incident, Corrie sent a series of sexual messages to the victim claiming he had compromising images of them.</p><p>The court also heard Corrie had a previous conviction from 2020 after he sent messages to the second victim threatening to send compromising photos to her friends and family unless she sent more pictures.</p><p>In a victim personal statement, one of the teenagers said they do not feel safe in their daily life and suffer from constant fear, anxiety and depression.</p><p>Corrie initially denied the offences before pleading guilty and accepting that he was aware the victims were both aged under 16.</p><p>He admitted to nine counts of sexual activity with a child, eight counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and two counts of sexual communication with a child.</p><p>The Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP said:</p> <p>Jacob Corrie’s crimes were appalling. 3206695	无图 <p>Darren Wilson, master of Northern Irish registered fishing vessel Northern Viking (N74), and owners Kearney Trawlers Ltd, were sentenced at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on 10 July 2025.</p><p>The court heard how Northern Viking, a 20.4 metre stern trawler, was boarded for a routine inspection by officers from MMO on 15 January 2022.</p><p>Upon boarding the vessel, it was noted that the satellite tracking system did not appear to be working. It is a legal requirement to have a fully operational system while undertaking fishing activity. Officers were also unable to view the electronic log, as the onboard laptop was not working, meaning the previous days catch had not been recorded.</p><p>When officers inspected the fish room, Mr Wilson was advised that the mixed fish in boxes needed to be sorted into separate species and logged, if the quantity was above 50kg. Upon further inspection, it was found that the weight of fish was higher than what was declared in the logbook and some sole and plaice were above or below the minimum conservation reference size, meaning they should have been stored separately.</p><p>Both parties pleaded guilty to all offences in court. Kearney Trawlers Ltd was fined £40,000, costs of £4,112.80 and a £190 victim surcharge. Darren Wilson was fined £1,195, costs of £457 and a £120 victim surcharge.</p><p>MMO Director of Operations, Peter Clark said:</p> <p>It’s our responsibility to protect and manage fish stocks sustainably for the wider fishing industry and future generations. (PNA file photo)</p> <p>MANILA – The Philippines’ manufacturing sector posted its 10-month high growth in May 2025 after rising by 4.9 percent year-on-year.</p><p>Citing preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSE), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported Monday that the annual volume of production index (VoPI) growth last May is a continuation of the 4.3 percent expansion in the previous month.</p><p>This was traced primarily to the 15.7 percent jump of output of food products subsection, faster than the previous month’s 11.2 percent growth.</p><p>Another contributor is the transport equipment, which accelerated by 13.5 percent from 7.4 percent last April.</p><p>This output is seen to rise further in June after S&P Global earlier reported the 50.7 percent rise to the country’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) in June 2025, from 50.1 in the previous month. An index of above 50 indicates an expansion while a figure below 50 shows otherwise.</p><p>The Board of Investments also reported that it approved PHP15.02 billion worth of manufacturing projects in the first half of this year, which, in turn, is forecast to generate more than 5,000 new jobs.</p><p>“This positive outlook on the manufacturing sector is a catalyst for the country’s economic growth and more job opportunities for Filipinos. When factories product more, they need to hire more workers,” Trade Secretary Cristina Roque said. (Photo courtesy of PDEA)</p> <p>MANILA – Authorities arrested a female Canadian national after finding PHP164.7 million worth of shabu from her luggage at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) reported on Monday.</p><p>In a statement, the PDEA said alias “Grace,” 66, arrived from Toronto, Canada via Hong Kong on Monday when members of the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIA-IADITG) flagged the Canadian national based on intelligence-driven efforts.</p><p>The operation was led by the PDEA Regional Office–National Capital Region, working closely with the Bureau of Customs, the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group, the Airport Police Department, the PNP Drug Enforcement Group, the National Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Immigration.</p><p>The operatives found the illegal drugs in three large garbage bags, weighing around 24,231 grams.</p><p>Initial field testing confirmed the substance as methamphetamine hydrochloride. Samples were secured and turned over to the PDEA Laboratory Service for confirmatory analysis.</p><p>Non-drug evidence recovered from the suspect’s belongings included a Canadian passport, two airline boarding passes, a mobile phone, an identification card, and a baggage declaration form.</p><p>The arrested passenger was informed of her constitutional rights and is now facing charges for Importation of Dangerous Drugs under Section 4, Article II of Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.</p><p>The successful interdiction underscores the unwavering dedication of PDEA and its partner agencies to secure the nation’s borders against transnational drug smuggling. Marcos Jr. on Monday conveyed his administration’s full support for the Malampaya Phase 4 drilling operations, calling the project critical to ensuring an afforda-ble and stable power supply for millions of Filipinos.</p><p>In a Facebook post, Marcos emphasized the urgency of tapping new gas reserves as existing resources in the Malampaya gas field — which currently supplies about 20 percent of Luzon’s power — continue to dwindle.</p><p>“Malampaya powers 20 percent of Luzon’s electricity. Powering our homes, schools, hospitals, offices, and factories. But those reserves are running low,” the President said.</p><p>“That’s why Phase IV drilling is now underway to tap new wells and keep the power flowing so our people will have cheaper and reliable electricity.”</p><p>Marcos personally conducted an aerial inspection of the Noble Viking drilling rig to monitor ongoing operations, underscoring the administration’s commitment to energy security.</p><p>“I flew over the Noble Viking today to see the progress first-hand and to show the government’s full support in getting this project done on time,” he said.</p><p>The Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project, located off the coast of Palawan, is the country’s only indigenous source of natural gas.</p><p>It has fueled several gas-fired power plants in Batangas since 2001, contributing significantly to the Luzon grid and helping reduce dependence on imported fuel.</p><p>While accelerating the shift to renewable energy, Marcos stressed that natural gas remains a vital part of the country’s transition strategy.</p><p>“As we expand our use of renewable energy, natural gas will continue to power homes, keep prices steady and secure our supply,” he said.</p><p>Phase 4 of the Malampaya project aims to develop new wells to extend the facility’s life and sustain its output.</p><p>If successful, the output from the new wells could extend Malampaya’s operations by 2034, up from the current projection of 2029. That way, every cobot could be used safely alongside with humans," Gea Ann Rose Dono, participant from the Southern Institute of Maritime Study, said during the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon interview over PTV.</p><p>The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) also confirmed that it is the first time this specific skills area was included the WorldSkills ASEAN.</p><p>Cobot, Dono said, is among the new and emerging technologies.</p><p>"Cobot system integration promotes safe interaction or collaboration of human being with a big robot. Compared to traditional robots that should be placed within safety barriers, cobots could interact safely," she said.</p><p>Participants in this skills area are those knowledgeable in robotics, electronics, wiring, programming and troubleshooting.</p><p>Aside from TESDA, there are also around 30 partners or enterprises helping the local participants in their training.</p><p>They provide the equipment, facilities and even some experts, TESDA Undersecretary Nelly Dillera said in the same interview.</p><p>Some TESDA accredited centers also serve as training venues, she added.</p><p>Earlier, Dillera said the competition has six skills areas with 32 specific skills. These include the information and communications technology (ICT) that would include specific skills on cybersecurity, information network cabling, internet of things and information technology (IT) network system; and emerging skills in the fields of manufacturing and engineering technology.</p><p>About 300 delegates and their companions are expected to attend the WorldSkills ASEAN at the World Trade Center, she said.
