Reader discretion is advised.</p><p>A missing 17-year-old girl’s body was found inside a locked shack in Kinross, Mpumalanga, with visible head injuries and evidence of sexual assault on Wednesday.</p><p>The victim has been reported missing since 23 May 2025.</p>Teen girl missing since 23 May <p>Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said that later, the police were asked to search the residence believed to be owned by the girl’s stepfather.</p><p>“Upon arrival at the shack in Extension 33, Marikana, Kinross, police found the doors and burglar gates locked,” Ndubane said.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> New development in Olorato Mongale murder case </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: SAPS reunites 17 968 missing persons with loved ones</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Forced entry was made, and a gruesome discovery was made in one of the bedrooms.”</p><p>The police discovered the semi-decomposed naked body of a young woman, believed to be the missing teen, inside the bedroom. She was lying on a bed covered in blankets with her legs open.</p>Victim had visible head injuries and evidence of sexual assault<p>The victim had visible head injuries, including a deep wound and a crushed forehead.</p><p>The police suspect that the teen’s attacker raped and then killed her.</p><p> </p><p>Ndubane said officers found a blood-stained pipe wrench (bobbejaan spanner) next to the bed and believe it to be the murder weapon.</p><p>ALSO READ: Have you seen these men? Police looking for two in connection with journalist’s death</p><p>“Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim had recently argued with her stepfather over his intention to sell the shack that once belonged to her late mother,” Ndubane added.</p><p>“The teenager had reportedly objected, expressing concern for her younger siblings, who would need a place to stay in the future.”</p><p> </p>Stepfather linked to teen’s and girlfriend’s murders<p>Additional investigation has connected this crime to the stepfather, who is in police custody for a separate incident in which he allegedly brutally murdered his 34-year-old girlfriend in Kinross on 23 May. He is now a suspect in both the murders.</p><p>The rising number of gender-based violence cases has alarmed Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga.</p><p>“The brutal killing of women and children is unacceptable. These acts will not be tolerated. Picture: Supplied</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>He’s not your stereotypical up and coming showbusiness star. </p><p>Instead, Dean Goldblum is the kind of guy who has an insatiable curiosity about the world around him, and the people in it. </p><p>The kind of person everyone wants at a dinner party, because he’s just that chilled. In his instance, nice guys cross the finishing line first. </p><p>And he’s well on his way with several notable roles under his belt and now, a spot in a Pepsi Zero Sugar ad set for global release.</p><p>The ad is a fast moving musical collage that focuses on expressions, consuming and interacting with the soft drink. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Remembering Darren Scott: A radio man’s radio man </p> </p> </p><p>And while nobody in the cast had a speaking part, just being in a major league soft drink add instantly conjures peers like Michael Jackson, Madonna and Britney Spears.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It’s a small part but a big deal.</p><p>“It was incredible,” Goldblum said. </p><p>“We shot the Pepsi ad for six days, and every moment was special.” </p><p>Filmed in Cape Town with an international crew and managed by Ridley Scott’s production house, the campaign is big-budget stuff. </p><p> </p><p>Goldblum described the shoot as a masterclass. </p><p>“Working with the director, the camera persons, and then the company handling local production, everyone was at the top of their game,” he said. “You learn so much just by being around people like that.”</p>All South African cast <p>The entire Pepsi ad cast was South African, and most of the crew too. </p><p>“It’s a big deal,” he said. “A project like that showcases our talent on a global stage and brings huge investment into the country via the production. And millions of people are going to see it.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Man of influence still a player?</p><p>But starring in a Pepsi ad is not the beginning and end of his career, nor his first international pitstop. </p><p>Goldblum has stacked up roles with credits in Darby and the Dead, The Kingdom, Tali’s Joburg Diary, Die Onderonsie, and South Africa’s first Amazon Prime Original, The Shakedown.</p><p>Later this year, he stars in Pretty How Town, directed by Alan Shelley, and he’s also been cast in Muzzle: City of Wolves opposite Aaron Eckhart.</p><p> </p><p> <i></i> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Gold-3.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Gold-4.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Gold-5.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Gold-6.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <i></i></p><p>But the CV isn’t what defines him. There’s no pushiness. No hustle-for-the-sake-of-hustle vibe at all. </p><p>Instead, Goldblum comes across as a gentle, kind human. This is also how he approaches his work. </p><p>“I started drama classes when I was about six,” he said. “Helen Holden used to put me in shows. It was small stuff, but I loved it. Then music got me deeper into performance, and it all grew from there.”</p>First, he was a ‘Little Star’<p>His first screen role came at 13, on SABC’s Little Stars. </p><p> </p><p>By high school, he’d already appeared on South Africa’s Got Talent. </p><p>“I was still figuring out if I wanted to study law or act,” he said. “I was passionate about human rights. Still am.” </p><p>The turning point came in a school production of Big Fish. </p><p>“That experience changed everything,” he said. “I realised I could probably have more impact as a performer than I would as an attorney. That connection between people, that energy. It felt more immediate, more alive,” he said.</p><p>Goldblum studied drama at UCT but worked professionally during his holidays, jumping between television soaps and student life. </p><p>“Generations, Rhythm City and the like. I’d come back to Joburg during the breaks and shoot, then return to class,” he said. “It was just luck, really. Good timing.” </p><p>He’s been fortunate enough that his work has started finding him.</p>‘A lot of international work is being shot here’<p>Despite a slowdown in local commissioning, Goldblum said the industry is still very much alive. </p><p>“A lot of the international work is being shot here,” he said. “The film and television world has become so globalised. I’ve done American work without ever leaving South Africa.” </p><p>The challenge, he said, lies in local productions, funded at home.</p><p>“Funding is hard. The DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) rebates to producers and the way rules change makes things unpredictable. But people are still doing it, still finding a way to create.”</p><p>Goldblum has found his way. His slate’s busy, and the casting couch has never intimidated him. Instead, it’s like a fresh start every time.</p><p> “I’ve always felt calm in castings,” he said. “I try to approach them like I would a conversation. No performance, no pretence. Picture: Tracy Lee Stark</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The National Treasury has defended its decision to increase the general fuel levy in the budget 3.0 amid criticism over its broader tax policy.</p><p>On Friday, officials from the Treasury and the South African Revenue Service (Sars) appeared before Parliament in a joint meeting of the Standing Committee on Finance and the Select Committee on Finance. </p><p>They were responding to public submissions on the fiscal framework and revenue proposals, which outline South Africa’s economic policies, revenue projections, and government expenditure limits.</p><p>This follows the tabling of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s third national budget for the 2025/2026 financial year, after months of political impasse.</p><p>The budget includes a fuel levy increase of 16 cents per litre for petrol and 15 cents for diesel, effective from 4 June. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> EFF files urgent interdict to stop proposed fuel levy hike </p> </p> </p><p>However, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are challenging the hike in court.</p><p> </p><p> </p>National Treasury’s revenue projections<p>Treasury’s head of tax and financial sector policy, Christopher Axelson, addressed the committee on the revised revenue outlook. </p><p>Axelson noted that revenue projections had decreased by R61.9 billion compared to the budget tabled in March. </p><p>This decline was driven in part by the withdrawal of proposed increases to value-added tax (VAT) and adjustments to zero-rated items.</p><p>“That increase was reduced slightly, but it still required a large amount of additional revenue to make sure we have a fiscally sustainable trajectory for our debt and debt-service costs, and because of that, this May 2025 budget does include R18 billion in additional revenue for 2025/2026 and has R1 billion in tax relief in 2026/2027,” the Treasury official said.</p><p> </p><p>He also indicated that a further R20 billion in unspecified tax policy adjustments is anticipated for the 2026 budget. </p><p>To fund expenditure priorities, Treasury has opted for a range of tax measures, including no changes to personal income tax brackets or rebates, an inflationary increase in the fuel levy, and above-inflation hikes in excise duties on alcohol and tobacco. </p><p>Diesel refund relief for primary sectors was also announced.</p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: Fuel levy replaced VAT hike but is it the better option?</p><p> </p><p>Axelson pointed out that past personal income tax increases had failed to raise the intended revenue, while corporate income tax remains “highly volatile”.</p><p>“Corporate income tax increases are the most damaging to growth, and if you reduce growth, it reduces the tax bases as well, so it is not as effective.”</p><p>Axelson pointed out that a VAT increase was the most efficient revenue-raising option but had to be scrapped due to opposition.</p><p>As a result, a bulk of the revenue shortfall was addressed by not adjusting personal income tax and rebates for inflation.</p><p> </p><p>He also explained that Treasury has aimed to avoid increasing taxes over the last five years in an effort to support economic recovery, adding that the country’s tax system was “progressive”.</p>National Treasury defends fuel levy hike<p>Moreover, Axelson responded to comparisons between the fuel levy hike and a VAT increase.</p><p>“The quantum is very different. The VAT increase over three years would have raised about R75 billion. Increasing the fuel levy by inflation is closer to around R12 billion.”</p><p>He defended the levy hike, arguing that it had not been raised in the previous three budgets.</p><p> </p><p>“Part of that was due to the very high oil, petrol and diesel prices [but] those have been coming down lately. The recent non-adjustment in the March budget was to provide relief for VAT.”</p><p>READ MORE: VAT reversal overshadowed by fuel levy hike</p><p>Axelson emphasised that the fuel levy is a significant source of state revenue, contributing about 5% to total tax revenue.</p><p>“This is a specific tax, a cents per litre, so these kinds of specific taxes, which are the same as excise duties, they need to be adjusted by inflation; otherwise, the real value of that tax will go down over time.”</p><p>He warned that Treasury would lose about R3.5 billion in revenue by failing to increase the fuel levy.</p><p>“The vast majority of the tax revenue increase is all on the personal income tax side. Around R16.7 billion of the R18 billion in increases is all on personal income tax.”</p>Watch the meeting below:<noscript></noscript><p>Axelson told the committee that various alternative revenue proposals – such as eliminating the employment tax incentive (ETI), increasing corporate income tax, introducing a wealth tax, and partially adjusting tax brackets – will be considered in the 2026 budget.</p><p>“A lot of them are very good and interesting proposals which we are going to have to consider very carefully and hopefully have a more consultative process before the next budget.”</p><p>He added that although the finance minister has the authority under the Customs and Excise Act to implement an interim fuel levy adjustment via a notice in the government gazette, Parliament has the right to intervene.</p><p>“We do hope the notice will be published quite soon [but] Parliament may decide to intervene [as] there is legislative oversight.”</p>Tax policy criticised<p>Civil society and political parties reacted strongly to the Treasury’s presentation. </p><p>The Budget Justice Coalition, one of the organisations that made submissions, rejected claims of a progressive tax system.</p><p>“Our tax system can look progressive on paper, but it doesn’t actually work that way, and we know that all too well in a country that is marked by some of the highest levels of inequality,” the organisation’s chairperson, Matshidiso Lencoasa, said.</p><p>She argued that South Africa’s tax policy burdens the poor, while wealthy individuals and corporations continue to exploit loopholes to their advantage.</p><p>READ MORE: Fuel levy pain: Brace for possibility of petrol price hike in June</p><p>Lencoasa further criticised the proposed VAT and fuel levy increases, describing them as “blunt instruments” that would place a heavier financial strain on the country’s most vulnerable populations.</p><p>Pieter Faber, senior executive of taxation at the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica), also expressed concern.</p><p>Faber said the institution cannot support further tax increases in an already high-tax environment, especially amid rising national debt and ongoing concerns about the lack of government accountability, as highlighted in the Auditor-General’s report on local government this week.</p>Fuel levy increase under scrutiny<p>MK Party MP Des Van Rooyen criticised the delayed implementation of alternative proposals.</p><p>“My expectation was that most of the inputs would be accommodated in this budgeting cycle,” Van Rooyen said.</p><p>He asserted that the fuel levy increase was more regressive than the scrapped VAT hike. </p><p>“There should be a thunderous response against this proposal.”</p><p>Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Pieter Britz called for a fairer distribution of the tax burden.</p><p>READ MORE: EFF files urgent interdict to stop proposed fuel levy hike</p><p>EFF MP Omphile Maotwe strongly disagreed with Treasury’s position on the fuel levy.</p><p>“National Treasury refuses to increase corporate income tax for ideological reasons and not practical ones. Picture: Caxton Network News</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A former Democratic Alliance councillor has on Friday been handed down four life sentences after he was found guilty of murdering his partner and children.</p><p>The Ladysmith Regional Court in KwaZulu-Natal further slapped Michael Buthelezi, 48, with an additional 15-year sentence for two counts of defeating the ends of justice and arson.</p>House set on fire<p>On 29 October 2023, a fire broke out in the two-roomed Bergville house Buthelezi shared with his 41-year-old fiancée, Khombisile Nyoka, and three children aged between two and 10.</p><p>The fire ravaged the house as the family was sleeping, killing Nyoka and Buthelezi’s two daughters, Lubanzi, 12, and Sibingele, two.</p><p>National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said Buthelezi and his 10-year-old son Zigizemdoda managed to escape the house.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> New development in Olorato Mongale murder case </p> </p> </p><p>“However, the child was put on palliative care and succumbed to his injuries later at the hospital. Buthelezi was placed under observation and treated for his injuries,” Ramkisson-Kara said.</p><p> </p><p> </p>Political killing claims<p>Buthelezi, who was a councillor at that time, claimed he was attacked because of his stance in the fight against corruption.</p><p>South African Police Service regional spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the Political Killings Task Team took over the investigations.</p><p>“But his tune took a dramatic turn when he later accused his partner’s ex-boyfriend of throwing a bomb inside the house,” Netshiunda said.</p><p>ALSO READ: ‘I did it for Joshlin’: Woman admits to burning down Kelly Smith’s shack</p><p> </p>Investigations point to Buthelezi<p>“Thorough police investigations proved that Buthelezi single-handedly killed his family, and overwhelming evidence convinced the court to hand down a maximum sentence,” he added.</p><p>During the trial, the state – represented by prosecutor Shika Siverpersad – led the evidence of 11 witnesses including, the first people to arrive at the scene, medical personnel and a relative.</p>Trouble in paradise<p>According to the NPA, the relative told the court that Buthelezi and Nyoka had a tumultuous relationship and that he had threatened to burn her to death just two weeks before the incident.</p><p>“In addition, Ms. Siverpersad handed in a Victim Impact Statement compiled by [Nyoka’s] father and facilitated by court preparation officer Khulekani Professor Mthembu. In his statement, the man said that he and his family were hurt and traumatised by the incident. Court of Appeal (SCA) has overturned the conviction of a man previously sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape.</p><p>The SCA set aside the ruling of the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, which had upheld Ramesa Johannes Rathebe’s conviction on 11 counts of rape.</p><p>His appeal follows the earlier acquittal of his friend and co-accused, Abel Sekoala, on the same charges.</p>Two men accused of rape<p>Rathebe and Sekoala were tried in the Pretoria North Regional Court, where they were initially sentenced to seven years in prison for rape.</p><p>The case arose from a complaint by a woman who </p><p>During the trial, the woman alleged that she was gang-raped by Sekoala and Rathebe at her former boyfriend’s residence on 20 February 2010.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>She claimed the assault began with Sekoala raping her and continued as both men took turns until the next morning.</p><p>She reported the alleged rape the following day and underwent a medical examination on 22 February.</p><p>However, Sekoala denied raping his ex-girlfriend.</p><p>He testified that the woman arrived at his house that night, but he attempted to chase her away.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Man’s ex-girlfriend became emotional and pleaded with him not to end their relationship.</p><p>He told the court that she requested to have sex with him one last time, which he agreed to.</p><p>However, Sekoala maintained the intercourse was consensual and happened multiple times during the night.</p><p> </p><p>Rathebe testified he had no sexual contact with the complainant.</p><p>He acknowledged the troubled relationship between the woman and Sekoala, saying she had previously asked him to mediate.</p><p>He claimed to have intervened when Sekoala tried to force the ex-girlfriend out.</p><p>Rathebe further informed the court that he later fell asleep on a couch in the lounge while she was crying and, upon waking, saw her doing chores in Sekoala’s bedroom.</p><p> </p>Appeals dismissed before SCA steps in<p>Both men were convicted in the regional court and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment, with three years suspended.</p><p>Their appeals were dismissed by both the regional and high courts.</p><p>In February 2022, the high court not only rejected their appeals but also increased their sentences to 20 years.</p><p>Sekoala was later granted special leave to appeal the SCA overturned his conviction.</p><p>The appellate court found the complainant’s testimony – the sole evidence presented by the state – to be riddled with inconsistencies and contradictions, highlighting that the lower courts had overlooked these discrepancies.</p><p>The SCA also pointed out that the medical evidence, detailed in a J88 form completed by the examining doctor, was neutral and did not support the State’s case.</p>SCA acquits accused in rape appeal case<p>Rathebe was released on warning in November 2023, pending the outcome of his special leave to appeal before the SCA.</p><p>The SCA handed down its judgment on 30 May 2025, acquitting Rathebe of all charges and ordering his discharge.</p><p>Judge Baratang Connie Mocumie criticised the regional court’s conclusion regarding bruises found on the complainant’s arm, calling it misguided.</p><p>“The bruises could equally have resulted from the aggressive manhandling by Mr Sekoala when she was being chased out of the house.”</p><p>“Unfortunately, this was neither explored with any witness during the trial, nor was the doctor who examined the complainant called to explain which scenario would be consistent with the bruises,” the judgment reads.</p><p>Mocumie ruled that the state had not proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.</p><p>“For these reasons, Mr Rathebe is entitled to the benefit of the same doubt 3162933	有图 <p> The Stormers were their own worst enemy as their shoddy defence allowed Glasgow Warriors to run in five tries, leading to a heavy loss in the end. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Henco-Venter-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Former Cheetahs and Sharks loose forward Henco Venter scores a try for Glasgow Warriors in their URC quarterfinal win over the Stormers at the Scotstoun Stadium on Friday night.Picture: Craig Williamson/SNS Group via Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>It was a tale of two defences as the Stormers produced a poor defensive performance that cost them dearly as Glasgow Warriors clinched a well-deserved 36-18 win in their United Rugby Championship (URC) quarterfinal at the Scotstoun Stadium on Friday night.</p><p>The hosts were at their attacking best, scoring five sublime tries, but they were aided by a dismal Stormers defence that just seemed to open up for them constantly over the game.</p><p>The Glasgow defence by contrast was fantastic, with them only really beaten once in the second half, while the visitors first try was pretty fortuitous.</p>Strong start<p>In the match it was the Stormers who got off to a strong start, dominating the opening seven minutes, but some top defence from Glasgow meant they eventually went for poles with flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu putting them on the board.</p><p>But an eighth minute yellow card to wing Seabelo Senatla, for slowing down the ball at a ruck in the red zone, allowed Glasgow to come firing back.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Edinburgh look to discipline as they hope to beat Bulls for first time in Pretoria </p> </p> </p><p>They immediately kicked to the corner, pulled a lineout move and flank Rory Darge dived over for the opening try, converted by scrumhalf George Horne, to put them ahead.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In the 14<sup>th</sup> minute the Stormers lost possession in their own half, Glasgow attacked and inside centre Sione Tuipulotu stabbed through a perfect grubber for wing Kyle Rowe to chase onto and score, with Horne’s extras putting them 14-3 up.</p><p>The Stormers then hit back, Feinberg-Mngomezulu first knocking over a penalty, and in the 26<sup>th</sup> minute hoisted an up and under which Senatla chased, saw bounce off his knee, chased again and picked up to score, with the conversion making it 14-13.</p><p>But straight from the kick-off Glasgow responded, with the Stormers giving away a penalty, allowing them to kick to the corner and set the lineout maul which former Cheetahs and Sharks eighthman Henco Venter broke away from and scored in the corner, making it 19-14 which the hosts took into the halftime break.</p>Perfect start<p>The Stormers got the second half off to the perfect start as they attacked from a scrum in their own half, Feinberg-Mngomezulu popped the ball to replacement back Manie Libbok, he broke the line and gave it to fullback Warrick Gelant who passed to Senatla to sprint away and score in the corner.</p><p> </p><p>But again the visitors allowed the hosts straight back in, as they secured the ball, attacked into the 22m and Rowe was on hand to go over for his second, converted by Horne to put them 26-18 up after 46 minutes.</p><p>Horne then essentially made the game safe as he finished off a stunning counter attack from a stolen lineout in the Stormers half in the 52<sup>nd</sup> minute, and added a penalty in the 56<sup>th</sup> to push them into a 36-18 lead.</p><p>The Stormers had their chances over the final 20 minutes to get back into the game, but a slew of mistakes, including a knock on from hooker Andre-Hugo Venter at a maul on the 5m with the tryline at his mercy, proved to be the story of their night as they fell well short in the end.</p>Scorers<p>Glasgow Warriors: Tries – Rory Darge, Kyle Rowe (2), Henco Venter, George Horne; 3162932	有图 <p> Nissan is set to cut its financial losses by closing seven of its 17 global factories by 2027. </p> <p> </p> <p> <p>The Nissan plant in Rosslyn outside Pretoria faces closure in the Japanese carmaker’s desperate attempt to cut its global losses.</p><p>The local factory is one of seven global assembly facilities on the chopping block as Nissan plans to reduce its plants from 17 to 10 by 2027.</p><p>The plant has been in operation since 1966 and apart from direct job losses, its closure will have an indirect impact on two other manufacturers, BMW and Ford, which also have factories in Pretoria.</p><p>In this week’s episode of The Citizen Motoring’s Pitstop podcast, we look at what the closure of the Nissan plant will mean for the brand in South Africa. </p>Nissan plant in Rosslyn under-utilised<p>Since the discontinuation of the Nissan NP200, only the Navara bakkie has been built in Rosslyn, leaving the factory underutilised. While there has been talk about the possibility of assembling an SUV alongside the Navara, the company’s global restructuring plan, Re:Nissan, indicates otherwise.</p><p>The manufacturer announced this month that it plans to reduce its global workforce by a further 20 000 jobs on top of 9 000 last year. 3162931	有图 <p> "I do not accept that the sky will fall" says judge </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Lotto-ticket-and-pen.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has failed in its bid to change a recent court ruling limiting the temporary licence to operate the lottery to five months.</p><p>This means ticket sales may stop before Sunday, 1 June.</p><p>The current licence, held by Ithuba Holdings, expires on Saturday. After that, their sister company, Ithuba Lottery, was supposed to take over the licence for a period of twelve months.</p><p>But after last week’s Gauteng High Courtrulingthat the issuing of the temporary licence is unconstitutional and can only be issued for five months, Ithuba Lottery said a five-month licence is financially unfeasible and may not continue operating the lottery after Saturday.</p><p>And the new licence holder,Sizekhaya Holdings, which is set to take over from Ithuba Lottery for a period of eight years, will need at least nine months to set up its operations.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> US court blocks tariffs in major setback for Trump </p> </p> </p><p>The NLC therefore applied to change the court order to allow a twelve-month licence. But Judge Omphemetse Mooki ruled against them on Friday.</p><p> </p><p> </p>Will funding stop?<p>A source at the NLC told GroundUp that the board is in emergency meetings to discuss the way forward.</p><p>If lottery ticket sales do stop after Saturday, the National Lottery Distribution Fund does still have about R4.3-billion in reserves to continue issuing grants to good causes.</p><p>The NLC’s application, which was heard urgently on Thursday at the High Court in Pretoria, was opposed by Wina Njalo, one of the companies that bid on the lottery licence tender.</p><p>Wina Njalo argued that the NLC was seeking to relitigate the same issues that had already been heard by the court. If it was found that five months was not enough time, it argued, then the NLC could approach the court at that stage.</p><p> </p><p>It said the application to vary the order was yet another example of how the NLC was seeking to favour the Ithuba companies and they were not entitled to insist on making a profit, given that Ithuba Holdings had already made “huge profits” by operating the lottery for the last 10 years.</p><p>In his ruling, Judge Mooki said the issue was whether it was just and equitable to extend the period that the temporary licence can operate before it is declared invalid and, in doing so, interfere with the discretion exercised by another court.</p><p>Such interference was “very sparingly exercised”.</p><p>He said he was not persuaded that the NLC had made out a case.</p><p> </p><p>“There is no substantive support that Ithuba Lottery will suffer a loss of R51-million unless it is granted a temporary licence for 12 months. There was complete silence from Ithuba Lottery. It did not file any affidavits,” the Judge said.</p><p>He pointed to the fact that the NLC on 22 May 2025, when it was aware of Judge Potterill’s order, had written to Ithuba Lottery requesting it sign a licence to operate for 12 months.</p><p>“It was thus inviting the Ithuba Lottery to sign an agreement that would breach the order made on May 21.”</p><p>While the NLC had disclosed the response from Ithuba Lottery, it had not disclosed its own letter.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Big change to Lotto operations: Will tickets be on sale next week?</p>5 months could be long enough<p>Judge Mooki said the NLC had also not put up any evidence that Sizekhaya needed more than five months to set up operations.</p><p>In fact, as Wina Njalo had pointed out, a condition of the fourth licence was that the successful bidder must be able to operate within five to six months of being awarded the licence.</p><p>He said in claiming that its reserves would be significantly depleted should there be no operator after 1 June, the NLC had “over-egged the pudding”.</p><p> </p><p>“I do not accept that the sky will fall after 1 June should Ithuba Lottery refuse to sign an agreement to conduct lottery operations as determined in (Potterill’s) order,” he said.</p><p>The request for proposals for the temporary licence was issued when it became apparent that Minister Parks Tau would not meet the strict deadlines to announce the new lottery licence holder, giving it time to take over operations.</p><p>He only made the announcement on 28 May, just three days before the expiration of Ithuba’s licence. Unfortunately as athletes we are always going to be in the public eye, so a lot of things are going to be known about us that won’t be the same for someone who is not in the public eye,” he said.</p><p>“But it’s the territory that we’re in and moving into the World Test Championship the focus is really simple. It’s about going there to perform.”</p>‘I can still play the game of cricket’<p>Though he thanked the SA Cricketers Association and Cricket SA for the way they handled the matter, as well as his Proteas teammates for sticking by his side, 30-year-old Rabada acknowledged the controversy around his ban.</p><p> </p><p>However, he felt he could focus on the task ahead, playing what could be a key role for the Proteas in the Test final.</p><p>“As a player and as a man, people will have their different opinions about it, and I can live with that,” Rabada said.</p><p>“There will be people who will be there for you and people who are against you, and I can live with that. That’s fine.</p><p>“But I know I can still play the game of cricket and nothing changes. Bongani Mthimkhulu, a friend of one of the primary suspects,was wanted in connection with Mongale’s murder.</p><p>The police had already processed two of the three suspects in the system before connecting them to Mongale’s death. Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Tshwane’s water woes could worsen if residents in the capital continue to consume water at the current rate, the city has warned.</p><p>While Rand Water conducts its 107-hour planned major maintenance that will affect parts of the City of Tshwane, the municipality has urged residents to conserve water or risk further outages.</p><p>City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba on Friday urged residents of Region 6 and some parts of regions 2 and 3 to urgently reduce their water consumption after levels at the city’s reservoirs dropped significantly.</p><p>“Customers are reminded that Rand Water has kick-started its planned maintenance of infrastructure to improve the network’s reliability and efficiency. 3162927	有图 <p> SA smartphone users experience a 14.4% slower average download speed and 29.2% slower upload speed in rural areas than in urban areas. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Rural-connectivity-scaled.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: Supplied</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>With Starlinktouted as a solution to rural connectivity in South Africa, the local connectivity sector argues the focus should instead be on eliminating bureaucratic red tape.</p><p>Some local industry players and trade unions fear that the widely publicised Starlink project may threaten their existing companies and cause job losses.</p><p>The internet service, owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX,is expected to short-circuit the traditional process as its connectivity would be viasatellite infrastructure from space, with a much reduced need for ground-level personnel.</p><p>However, the industry’s main concern at the moment revolves around state-induced delays in putting up connectivity infrastructure. </p><p>Players in the market strongly believe that red tape hinders faster and more complete connectivity in rural areas, where it can take more than a year to erect a single tower because of delays in permitting processes.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Bad news for illegal Starlink users in SA </p> </p> </p><p>They said setting up thenetwork infrastructure had been a headache, marked by prolonged delays in getting it off the ground.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>They cited the fact that the rollout of 5G infrastructure across South Africa’s rural communities continued to lag behind. They regard this as amajor reason that rural communities experience poor connectivity.</p>Permit problems<p>The industry blames the state processes that must be followed to obtain a permit or permits to set up infrastructure.</p><p>The permit application has to go through themunicipality, where administrative delays hold it back. </p><p>Meanwhile, poorer communities get frustrated because they cannot connect to the Internet, communicate with emergency services and their families, or run their businesses.</p><p> </p><p>It is common and almost accepted that connectivity becomes impossible in rural areas of South Africa due to poor network reception caused by alack of signal. </p><p>ALSO READ: Bad news for illegal Starlink users in SA</p>No signal<p>Sometimes, a poor connection occurs even in peri-urban environments where it should be better.</p><p>A study by Opensignal published in 2023 found that South African smartphone users experience a 14.4% slower average download speed and 29.2% slower upload speed in rural areas than in urban areas.</p><p> </p><p>The study also found that time spent without a signal was far higher in rural areas, with users in the Northern Cape and Limpopo recording the highest proportion of time without a signal. </p><p>Part of the solution to this problem is the roll-out of more cell tower infrastructure in rural areas to improve network access and availability.</p><p>Expressing his frustration at the infrastructure bottlenecks, Sean Shipalana, director of Moropa Site Solutions, said they faced a chain of delays, some administrative, somestructural and some logistical.</p><p>Moropa Site Solutions is a locally owned, independent tower operator primarily in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North-West and the Eastern Cape. The company focuses on building tower sites in these provinces’ deep rural or underserved areas.</p><p> </p><p>Shipalana said that erecting a tower involves approval from government departments at the national, provincial, and local levels. </p><p>Entities that must give the green light in the form of permits include the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the department of forestry, fisheries and the environment, which must issue an environmental clearance.</p><p>Further consent approvals must come through municipal planning authorities and building plan approvals from thelocal government. </p><p>ALSO READ: Starlink proposal sparks rift in GNU</p><p> </p>A long wait<p>Shipalana said each step in every department or entity has its own timeline, often three to four months,which made the cumulative delays difficult to manage.</p><p>“Smaller municipalities that cover rural areas often face critical staffing shortages. Applications for building plans or zoning permissions can sit unattended for months, not because of inefficiency, but because there simply aren’t enough staff to process them.”</p><p>Even when paperwork is submitted correctly, delays in interdepartmental coordination can stall the process. Follow-ups are often required at multiple points and progress is hard to monitor without dedicated tracking systems.</p><p>These issues are further complicated by recent procedural changes, such as the CAA’s new requirement that obstacle assessments be conducted through two newly appointed service providers: Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) and Tsela Obstacle Safeguarding (Pty) Ltd.</p><p>Further delays were caused by network operators who changed their plans and cancelled their leases with tower operators when permits took more than a year to be issued. </p><p>This made the application process costly, which frustrated the communities who are pitted against the tower operator as they waited too long to receive the service.</p><p>“The reality on the ground is that many students in rural areas struggle to download school material due to poor signal. </p><p>“Small business owners often report difficulty processing mobile payments and community safety efforts, including CCTV and emergency alerts, are often disrupted by unreliable network coverage.</p><p>“We understand that regulations are in place for good reasons, but if we are serious about closing the digital divide, we need more streamlined, coordinated systems that recognise the urgency of bringing infrastructure to rural South Africa.</p><p>“We need smarter processes, clearer timelines, better communication between departments and proactive collaboration across sectors.</p><p>“This is not just about towers; it’s about dignity, equality and creating a South Africa where everyone is connected,” Shipalana said.</p>Starlink could do more harm than good<p>Political commentator Pule Monama criticised the “importation of Starlink” to South Africa, saying this, too, when finalised, will come with no meaningful conditions that will benefit the country.</p><p>“The politicians will just be happy that so many people are employed by this venture. Picture: Euan Cherry/Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Bulls director of rugby Jake White said he was thankful his team lost their last match against Edinburgh – the Challenge Cup quarter-final played in Scotland last month.</p><p>The lessons from that 34–28 defeat at Hive Stadium provide more insight than a victory would have, as the Bulls prepare to face Edinburgh again in their United Rugby Championship quarter-final at Loftus this Saturday (kick-off 1.30pm).</p><p>The teams clash for the third time this season after the Bulls emerged victorious at Loftus in September (final score 22–16). Head-to-head, Edinburgh have won three of the five games between the sides, though both teams have won every match played at home.</p>Bulls might have been overconfident<p>“I think what is a blessing for us is we lost to them a couple of weeks ago. I think had we had beaten them there and maybe won easily then maybe there would be a feeling of ‘gee, we whacked them or we beat them away’,” White said.</p><p>Had the Bulls done, so they would have made history as the first South African team to beat Edinburgh in Scotland. We cannot give them a 24–7 start and we can’t just believe that we will beat them because they beat us the last time that we played.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>When it comes to fast starts, however, the Bulls have led the way with 29 tries in the first 20 minutes this competition. But when asked about it, White said there is no magic formula and largely out of his hands.</p>Edinburgh have top internationals who ‘don’t go away’<p>White said Edinburgh were perhaps not a side that drew attention from world media but they probably have mroe international players than the Bulls do.</p><p>“I don’t ever want you to ever underestimate the value an international cap does for a player. You look at how our players have grown. When you look at a guy like Ruan Nortje, when he got here compared to now. </p><p>“When you’ve played the All Blacks twice and beaten the All Blacks as a Springbok you must become a better provincial rugby player. It just happens like that.”</p><p> </p><p>White made mention of the extensive budget Edinburgh possess, making it one of the wealthiest clubs in the world.</p><p>“They have lots of British & Irish Lions players in that squad as well. There is no doubt that a person who plays for the British & Irish Lions or Scottish rugby… must be a better player than you sometimes give them credit for.”</p><p>“The most important thing that they can do is they just don’t go away. It’s not just against us, it’s any games that they have played – they stay in the fight.</p>This is a ‘very different’ play-off for Jake White<p>White also drew attention to the growth of his players since their first URC campaign in 2021/22. They reached the final of that tournament, losing to the Stormers in Cape Town. They followed that up with a quarter-final exit in 2023 before reaching the final again last year, and losing to Glasgow at Loftus.</p><p> </p><p>“I’ve done this many times, and I’m not saying this in an arrogant way, I’ve been lucky enough to experience these feelings of playing knockout games in different competitions. </p><p>“It’s very different, this one. Because this group of players has exceeded expectations early on.” He said they played in their first final when the average age was about 23. </p><p>“I get the feeling we are maturing as a group.” He said while Willie le Roux joined the side to add experience, players such as Johan Grobbelaar, Ruan Nortje and Simphiwe Matanzima had clearly matured and developed their games.</p><p>“I feel the vibe is different. Picture: Supplied. </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A war of words is brewing between the Westfalia Fruit Company and residents of Makgoba, who own a series of agricultural plantations in Limpopo.</p><p>The fallout could affect the export of important citrus fruits to countries attending the G20 Presidency Summit in SA later this year.</p><p>At the centre of the dispute are allegations that Westfaliais exporting fresh avocados while communities, who own the land, live from hand to mouth.</p><p>The company exports avocados to international countries, including the UK, Netherlands, France, Spain, Germany, Canada, Costa Rica, Argentina, Japan, UAE, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.</p><p>Now, the Makgoba community, which won back the land from the Limpopo Land Claims Commission in 2009, is pleading with G20 countries to help them.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Liverpool sign Frimpong as Alexander-Arnold leaves </p> </p> </p><p>“About 90% of our community remains unemployed while the company is making so much profit from our fertile land,” said Frans Kubjana, spokesperson for Makgoba Concerned Group on Friday.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Kubjana said jobs in the company were given to foreigners, allegedly some undocumented. </p><p>“This is because Westfalia prefers cheap labour over South Africans. </p><p>“Despite having a mutual understanding to train our children, school them and develop our communities, Westfalia continues to snub us and collect good profits in an endeavour to line their pockets. Unfortunately, they do this at the expense of our fertile ancestral land.</p><p>“We want presidents of countries doing business with Westfalia in the G20 to intervene. If not, we will close the business and show them the door.” </p><p> </p>Westfalia Fruit denies the claims<p>Westfalia Fruit called the allegations baseless and devoid of truth.</p><p>“Makgoba Community members are makingunfounded allegations against Westfalia Fruit,” said Bomikazi Molapo, head of communications at Westfalia Fruit Africa.</p><p>Molapo said Westfalia has a zero-tolerance policy towards abusive or disruptive behaviour and takes the well-being of all its staff and stakeholders seriously.</p><p>“Westfalia has always been committed to supporting the local communities, amongst them, theMakgoba community. From its third generation, which was rolled out in 2018, it became a standalone product. But even then, the DZire and Swift looked very much the same from the front.</p><p>However, that all changed with the all-new DZire, with the designers coming up with a look that is very different from the new Swift.</p><p> </p><p>In fact, the sedan’s exterior is so stylish that it looks more expensive than it actually is.</p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/suzuki-dzire-launch-drive-review-rear.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>The rear features redesigned taillight clusters. The latter rides on black 15-inch alloy wheels and the GA on 14-inch steel wheels.</p><p> </p><p>On the colour palette, Alluring Blue Pearl Metallic joins Gallant Red Pearl Metallic, Nutmeg Brown Pearl Metallic, Arctic White Pearl, Splendid Silver Pearl Metallic, Magma Grey Metallic and Bluish Black Pearl. Metallic options can be ordered without any additional cost.</p><p>Inside, the DZire’s design is a lot closer to the Swift than from the outside, but with a twist. </p><p>The cabin features elegant beige and black finishes. This creates the sense of space, but the downside, as always, is that lighter materials are not as practical. Especially when children are regular passengers.</p>Plenty of features<p>The Suzuki DZire does miss out on the Swift’s nine-inch infotainment system, with GL+ models featuring a seven-inch system with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility.</p><p> </p><p>Standard across the range are a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, a high-adjustable driver’s seat, electrically adjustable and foldable side mirrors, an engine auto stop/start rear centre armrest, rear parking sensors, rear air vents, and USB ports in the front and rear.</p><p>In addition, GL+ models get a reverse camera and cruise control.</p><p>The Suzuki DZire’s standard safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD,electronic stability control, and hill-hold control.</p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/suzuki-dzire-launch-drive-review-cabin.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>The cabin comes standard in black and beige trim. Picture: Suzuki</sub>Getting the job done<p>The four-cylinder 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine has been replaced by a more efficient three-pot free-breathing 1.2-litre mill. It sends 60kW of power and 112Nm of torque to the front wheels via a choice of five-speed auto box or CVT. Suzuki claims it will only sip 4.4 litres per 100km, one of its biggest virtues.</p><p> </p><p>Knowing our profession’s intense dislike for CVTs, Suzuki only offered GL+ manual models at the recent launch drive. And put three people in a car to exhibit the rear legroom which is very generous along with 378 litres of boot space for a car measuring shorter than four metres.</p><p>Citizen Motoringthought the Suzuki DZire performed admirably carrying three adults up serious hilly sections in old Johannesburg. It requires constant shifting to keep on the boil, but itgot the job done nonetheless without too much fuss.</p><p>Suzuki became the second-best-selling local car brand by offering a variety of reliable and affordable solutions. The Dzire is no different. Picture: Darren Stewart/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>In recent years, Gerda Steyn has become the darlingof South African ultra-distance running, racking up a long list of victories and records at the country’s biggest races.</p><p>Everybody loves Gerda, and for good reason. She hardly seems to put a foot wrong, and her dominance at both the Comrades and Two Oceans ultra-marathons has been astounding.</p><p>However, as much as we’ve enjoyed the ‘Smiling Assassin’ tearing up the road with a grin, her phenomenal results have made things a little predictable.</p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/athletics-1-2.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>Gerda Steyn after winning her sixth successive title at the Two Oceans ultra-marathon in Cape Town last month. Picture: Peter Heeger/Gallo Images</sub>Van Zyl debut<p>At Comrades next week, however, Steyn will have to deal with Hollywood Athletics Club teammate Irvette van Zyl.</p><p>One of South Africa’s top road runners since she was a teenager, 37-year-old Van Zyl has been the only athlete to put up a fight against Steyn at Two Oceans over the last few years, pushing her all the way to the line on two occasions.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> American athlete Courtney Olsen targets another top three Comrades finish </p> </p> </p><p>And while she has been on the road backfrom injury in preparation for her first attempt at the Comrades Marathon, if anyone can give Steyn a go next weekend, it’s Van Zyl.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>At first glance, Van Zyl looks like she’s made of spaghetti.</p><p>Beneath the veneer, however, is a lining of steel that makes her one of the most feared athletes on SA roads.</p>Mental strength<p>Van Zyl has been riddled with injuries throughout her career, and she’s not as consistent as Steyn (to be fair, nobody is), but when she’s in form she has the mental strength to dig deeper than just about anyone.</p><p>It’s this side of her character that suggests she could be well suited to the brutal Comrades course, on top of the fact that she’s one of the strongest hill runners in the country. Photo: Tobias SCHWARZ / AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan will lock horns in Saturday’s Champions League final with the French side hoping to win European club football’s biggest prize for the first time and the Italians eyeing their fourth title.</p><p>The match, which kicks off at Bayern Munich’s 75,000-capacity Allianz Arena at 9:00pm (1900 GMT), pits an experienced Inter against a PSG team appearing in their second final since the transformative Qatari takeover of the club in 2011.</p><p>ALSO READ: Wily Inter aim to stop PSG juggernaut in Champions League final</p><p>Whoever wins will succeed Real Madrid as champions, and excitement is notably at fever pitch back in Paris, where around 40,000 people will watch on giant screens at PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium and a huge police presence is planned around the city.</p><p>The climax to the European season has thrown up a mouthwatering clash of opposing styles and ideas of how to build a team, a contest between one of the continent’s old guard and one of the state-owned modern superclubs.</p><p>Despite enormous spending, PSG have never won the Champions League before, coming closest when they got to the final in 2020.</p><p>That was during the pandemic, when they lost to Bayern behind closed doors in Lisbon, despite the presence of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar up front.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The addition of Lionel Messi a year later did not help them in their quest to claim the trophy, and their brilliant run to Munich has come in the season after Mbappe followed the South American superstar duo out of the exit door.</p>– ‘Do something historic’ –<p>“There have been great times, difficult times, but we have a glorious opportunity to do something remarkable and historic for this club,” captain Marquinhos said on Friday.</p><p>Under Spanish coach Luis Enrique, an exciting young Paris side has taken Europe by storm in recent months, with a comeback win in January against 2023 champions Manchester City proving the catalyst.</p><p>Since then PSG have knocked out three more Premier League sides — Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal — en route to the final, and have completed a French league and cup double.</p><p> </p><p>Ousmane Dembele has been their star player with 33 goals, ably assisted by fellow forwards Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola and January signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.</p><p>Others like Achraf Hakimi, formerly of Inter, and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma have also been superb.</p><p>“My biggest motivation is to make history for Paris and give the city and club something to celebrate,” said Luis Enrique, who is looking to win his second Champions League title, 10 years after leading Barcelona to glory.</p><p>Victory for PSG would make them just the second French winners of the competition — Marseille’s 1993 triumph also came in Munich, at the old Olympic Stadium, and against Inter’s city rivals AC Milan.</p><p> </p>– Italian experience –<p>Inter were the last Italian winners, when Jose Mourinho’s side defeated Bayern in Madrid in 2010. They also won it twice in successive years in the 1960s.</p><p>Coach Simone Inzaghi was already in charge when the Nerazzurri got to the final two years ago and lost narrowly to City.</p><p>As many as eight of the team that started that night in Istanbul could do so again here, and an experienced line-up should feature three players aged 36 or over.</p><p>Inzaghi’s side beat Bayern in the quarter-finals before getting the better of Barcelona in an epic tie in the last four.</p><p> </p><p>Captained by star Argentinian forward Lautaro Martinez, they will set up in a 3-5-2 formation that contrasts sharply with the 4-3-3 of PSG.</p><p>“Last time against Manchester City we produced a top-class performance but didn’t win, so this time we hope to be a bit more switched on,” said midfielder Nicolo Barella, recalling the 2023 final.</p><p>“These matches come down to fine margins, but we will try to bring home the trophy, that is the dream for all of us.</p><p>“After a season like this one I think we deserve to win this final,” added Barella, whose side missed out to Napoli for the Serie A title on the last day of the campaign.</p><p> </p><p>It is, remarkably, the first ever competitive encounter between the teams.</p><p>ALSO READ: Chelsea aim higher after Conference League triumph</p><p>While fans flooded into the German city on Friday, back in Paris fanzones have been set up at three locations beyond PSG’s stadium.</p><p>Police will deploy more than 5,000 officers in the city and its suburbs during the final after violence erupted following PSG’s last-four victory against Arsenal.</p><p>In Milan, meanwhile, tens of thousands will also watch the game at Inter’s San Siro stadium.</p> </p> <p> Share this article <p> <i></i><p> <i> </i> <i> </i> <i> </i> <i> </i> <i> </i> </p> </p> <p> Read more on these topics Champions League Inter Milan F.C. This is even more valid when it comes to financial literacy. </p><p>Do you ever wish that you knew what you know at the age of 50 about investments when you were 20?</p><p>If you were 20 today and could learn about investing from scratch, you might be surprised to learn that it is not just a privilege reserved for people with a lot of wealth. </p><p>It is, in fact, much more accessible than you might imagine, because it is all about three small things.</p><p>“Did you know that all people are genetically 99.9% similar, yet the 0.1% difference makes us all so unique? This is how </p> </p> </p><p>“A flight from Los Angeles to New York, with a 1% flight path deviation, would result in the plane landing 239 km off course. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Lastly, and this one is close to home, did you know that in the 2024 Olympics, our very own super athlete, Akani Simbine, missed winning a medal by one hundredth of a second? Only 0.01 seconds was the difference between receiving an Olympic medal and not.”</p><p>Amey says this makes it clear that the small things can have a profound impact on outcomes and shares these three lessons you can use to help your future self financially.</p><p>ALSO READ: What to consider when deciding to invest locally or offshore</p>Financial literacy lesson 1: Look at the small picture<p>Sometimes you need to look at the small details to get ahead in life, he says. </p><p> </p><p>“Many people complain about not having enough monthly income. To resolve this issue, you could search for a higher paying job, work a second job or play the Lotto, but these take time or may never materialise.</p><p>“Budgeting, on the other hand, is a much surer bet. Over two decades of experience have taught me that you can always find a place where you can cut back, be more financially free and start investing, even if just a little, for your future self.”</p><p>Amey says the sooner you start to invest, the better. </p><p>“I love the old Chinese proverb, ‘the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.’ </p><p> </p><p>“Do not wait for the right time, because time is not waiting for you. If you feel overwhelmed, contact a registered financial adviser or visit an asset management website where you will find different funds to suit your needs.”</p><p>His advice is to start by moving from a motivational to a disciplined mindset. </p><p>“Someone who is emotionally stunted uses motivation to do something difficult once, while an emotionally mature person uses discipline to do something difficult a thousand times.</p><p>“It may be difficult to start saving, but look at what the disciplined investor achieves over time.</p><p> </p><p>“If you start at 25 and invest just R1 000 per month until you are 55, you will end up with an impressive R1.5 million if market growth over the period is 8%.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Investing in JSE shares: What you need to know</p>Financial literacy lesson 2: Go small or go home<p>People usually start by adding bigger pebbles to fill a glass jar, but adding thousands of tiny granules of sand will ensure the jar reaches its true capacity. Amey says you should not wait until you have bigger chunks of money before you start investing.</p><p>“True success is not about chasing big wins, it is about getting the small things right so that the big things can follow. Some of the biggest success stories in the world started small.”</p><p> </p><p>He uses these examples from well-known people on starting small and growing from there:</p>Madiba tended herds of cattle in Qunu but went on to go to university and become the leader of the ANC and South Africa’s first democratically elected president, a true world icon.Legendary businessman Raymond Ackerman was fired from his retail job in the late 1960s when he bought four Pick n Pay stores and grew them over the years into what is today one of South Africa’s premier retail chains.<p>“These stories all teach us that even from humble beginnings, greatness can follow if you just persevere. Ultimately, it is all about putting one small foot in front of the other.”  </p><p>ALSO READ: South Africans optimistic about investing in residential property — survey</p>Financial literacy lesson 3: Be a small deal<p>In our consumer culture, we often feel the pressure to stand out and flaunt status, Amey says. “But what if there was more value in rejecting status anxiety to pursue our best life? What if real success was more about quiet self-reflection to see where our innate vulnerabilities and biases may be tripping us up?”</p><p>He points out that success is not about big gestures but about the consistent care and attention to every small detail.</p><p>“It is not about how much wealth you can display but about how financially literate you can become. Do not let your anxiety about current success stop you from putting the small things in place to achieve bigger success one day.</p><p>“One of the best small things you can do is to become aware of inherent behaviour biases that affect your decision-making. The three most common mind traps are the herding, anchoring and recency biases.</p><p>“Herding refers to doing what the herd is doing out of fear of missing out. If all your friends are spending freely and not saving, is it wise to simply follow? Anchoring means relying too heavily on the first piece of information you stumble across.</p><p>“Take a more holistic approach, do your research on reputable investment sites and if you can, engage with a qualified financial advisor and increase your financial literacy. </p><p>“Thirdly, do not get trapped by the recency bias. This is when we tend to focus more on recent events than long-term trends.”</p><p>He emphasises that markets are currently volatile, and while some of your family and friends may have lost money over recent months, longer-term investing, with exposure to equities, creates long-term wealth despite short-term market downturns.</p><p>Amey points out that instant gratification is celebrated in our culture.</p><p>“We have information at our fingertips through Google, social media and AI, and we can instantly order transport or food on our mobile devices.</p><p>“Investing, on the other hand, is counterintuitive to this programming, because it requires patience.</p><p>“Materialism and compulsivity erode our monthly income and trap us in debt cycles, leading to short-term gain and long-term pain. </p><p>“I have learnt that it is better to start off small, even if that means your house or car is not as smart as that of your friends.</p><p>“Be wise and use some of your income to provide for future capital growth over time.
