And like any exercise routine, it comes with a risk of injury. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sexual-Injuries-2.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Sometimes you need more than a plaster when sex gets rough. Picture Supplied. </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Love may be a contact sport, but it does not come with a warning label. </p><p>And while most bedroom bruises may be dismissed in the name of naughty fun, sex-related injuries can instantly turn passion into pain. </p><p>And it’s not something you’d want to explain at the office water cooler chinwag the next day.</p><p>Medical practitioner Dr Jonathan Redelinghuys said that sex injuries are not as rare as people like to think. </p><p>“The emergency room sees a fair number of these cases. People often do not talk about it, but it happens more often than anyone realises,” he said. “And these kinds of injuries are entirely preventable.”</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Liverpool trophy parade: Car ploughs into football fans injuring 27 </p> </p> </p>Broken Penis<p>There is no bone, but a penis can still be fractured.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“It usually happens during vigorous sex or when the angle is wrong and force is applied. You will hear a pop, followed by immediate pain, bruising and swelling,” Dr Redelinghuys said.</p><p>What happens is that the sponge-like chambers that fill with blood to create an erection can tear. It is as painful as it sounds. </p><p>“It is important to treat it quickly. If left alone, scar tissue can form, leading to permanent bending and sexual dysfunction,” he added. Get medical attention as quickly as possible, he added.</p>‘I slipped and fell on it’<p>Missing Objects</p><p> </p><p>The old “I slipped and fell on it” line might get a raised eyebrow, but it is a story heard often enough in trauma units, said Dr Redelinghuys. </p><p>Objects become stuck in the rectum and beyond more often than people think. </p><p>Objects not designed for anal use, such as deodorant cans, remote controls, and even lightbulbs, can get stuck where they should have been.</p><p>ALSO READ: Seven secrets to better female orgasms – expert</p><p> </p><p>“The rectum works a bit like a vacuum. Once something is inside, the muscles can pull it further in, and it gets harder to retrieve,” said Dr Redelinghuys. </p><p>If it does not have a flared base, it can disappear. </p><p>“Doctors do not care how it got there; we just want to get it out safely. But prevention is simple: use toys that are actually designed for the job,” he said.</p><p>Bad backs and pulled muscles</p><p> </p><p>Sex can be a workout. And like any exercise routine, it comes with a risk of injury. </p><p>Showers, slippery tiles, overambition, and surprise lifts of a partner are the usual suspects.</p><p>“Sex-related back injuries usually involve muscle strain, but we do see herniated discs from time to time,” he said. </p><p>While most strains settle with rest and painkillers, Dr Redelinghuys said numbness, tingling or shooting pain could be a sign of something more serious. </p><p> </p><p>“Listen to your body. If it feels wrong, stop.”</p>Good lubrication is a non-negotiable<p>Friction burns and grazes</p><p>When things get dry or a little too enthusiastic, abrasions can happen. </p><p>“Insufficient lubrication is a big cause of vaginal tearing, and that can make sex very painful long after the fact,” Dr Redelinghuys said. </p><p>“We also see penile abrasions, especially from teeth during oral sex.” </p><p>Most minor grazes heal on their own, but if they become swollen, red, or start weeping, they might be infected, and antibiotics may be needed. </p><p>Dr Redelinghuys also warned that not using lubrication appropriately can lead to vaginal or anal tissue tearing when lust overrides common sense.</p><p>Allergic reactions</p><p>Latex condoms are often the cause, but not the only one. </p><p>“Redness, itching, swelling and even blisters are possible. It can affect both partners and reactions can be immediate or delayed,” Dr Redelinghuys said. </p><p>Other common triggers of allergic reactions include flavoured lubricants, scented oils and even laundry detergent residue on bedding. </p><p>“If it burns or tingles and not in a good way, it is probably an allergy.” Treatment ranges from antihistamines to emergency care if it escalates.</p>More than just a love-bite?<p>Tongue, lip and love bites</p><p>It can be all fun and games until someone bites too hard. Passion can result in lapses of self-control, said Dr Redelinghuys. </p><p>“Split lips, bitten tongues, even cracked teeth. We have seen it all,” he said. </p><p>Most heal quickly, but he said anything that bleeds uncontrollably or exposes nerves needs medical care.</p><p>Then at its opposite, there are love bites that get out of hand, through to bumping into furniture or headboards. Hectic sex can leave visible evidence. </p><p>“Bruises are not unusual. Most are harmless, but internal swelling and deep tissue bruising should be checked out if painful or persistent,” he said.</p><p>Infections</p><p>Be careful when you have sex, said Dr Redelinghuys. Always practice safely and use protection, because nobody wants to receive the gift that keeps on giving: a sexually transmitted disease or infection. </p><p>Also, especially common in women, UTIs happen when bacteria sneak into the urethra during sex. </p><p>“Burning when you urinate, a constant urge to go, and lower abdominal pain are signs,” he said. Drink water, see a doctor and do not ignore it because it can turn into a kidney infection if left untreated.</p><p>“Most of these injuries and infections are preventable,” said Dr Redelinghuys. </p><p>“Use the right tools, communicate, do not rush, and if something feels off, there is no shame in pausing or drawing a hard stop. Good health is more important than a roll in the hay, with ouch. Picture: Facebook</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The mother and father of one of the suspects linked to Olorato Mongale’s death are in custody for allegedly tipping off their son that the police are looking for him.</p><p>The South African Police Service (Saps) provided an update to the murder case of the 30-year-old student on Thursday evening.</p><p>The police announced on social media that they had taken into custody the parents of one of the suspects, who is currently on the run.</p>Mongale murder suspect’s parents in custody<p>“The father is the owner of the VW Polo, while the mother is believed to have tipped off the son that police are at the parents’ house looking for him,” Saps said.</p><p>The mother’s actions allowed their son to evade arrest on Wednesday evening, the police said. The father is the owner of the VW polo while the mother is believed to have tipped off the son that police are at the parents’… pic.twitter.com/Ok866LjrVl</p>— SA Police Service 🇿🇦 (@SAPoliceService) May 29, 2025</p><p>Earlier on Thursday, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that Bongani Mthimkhulu, a friend of one of the primary suspects, is now wanted in connection with Mongale’s murder.</p><p>The development comes as investigators have made significant breakthroughs in KZN.</p>Vehicle used in crime recovered<p>They recovered the car allegedly used in the crime and arrested an elderly man believed to be connected to the case.</p><p> </p><p>The police had already processed two of the three suspects in the system before connecting them to Mongale’s death.</p><p>Mathe revealed that the police arrested Bongani Mthimkhulu and Phila Makhanya last on 20 April, on charges of kidnapping and robbery in the Brockbunny area.</p><p>ALSO READ: Olorato Mongale: Family reels as only child is violently ripped from her mother</p><p>The officer discovered the suspects had just kidnapped and robbed a woman, using the same VW Polo that would later become central to the Mongale murder investigation.</p><p> </p><p>Both suspects appeared in court on 22 April, secured bail on 26 April, and remained free while police began linking them to additional crimes.</p><p>Since authorities released contact information for Brigadier Nama, who is handling the case, the public has responded in large numbers.</p>Suspects’ criminal history<p>“Since issuing this number, hundreds of ladies are calling. They have appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court to apply for bail, but the application was postponed to 3 June. </p>‘I blame myself’<p>“I hate them. There hasn’t been a day that has gone by that I haven’t cried my eyes out,” Dawie Pretorius said. He said his children don’t go out much and he stayed at home to babysit his granddaughter. </p><p>“I waited for Brandon every day with his baby in my arms when he came home from work. The question is: what creates the atmosphere in society that makes members of the public so susceptible to violence? </p><p> </p><p>“To stalk someone and further assault them indicates a type of premeditated and planned behaviour. The violence is not just confined to the bar,” she said. </p><p>It was time the NPA prosecuted these crimes with the seriousness deserved, Van Graan said. </p><p>“Justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done. So society can see that the commission of these types of offences will not be tolerated or accepted.” </p>An ‘angry nation’<p>Rural criminologist Witness Maluleke said South Africa is an angry nation who often uses violence to solve personal disputes. </p><p> </p><p>“Causing the death of another person with clear intention remains an absolute solution to provocations and it is normalised by many of us. Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A Mpumalanga woman, whose child suffered brain damage due to a nurse’s alleged negligence, is accusing the institution of refusing to release medical records to sabotage the investigation. </p><p>Nokuthula Mkhabela from Pienaar outside Mbombela said the management of Rob Ferreira Hospital and the doctor who attended to her child refused to give her and her lawyers the child’s file. </p><p>Mkhabela said she started demanding the medical records in 2019, when launching a medical negligence case against the institution. </p>Lawyers drop Mkhabela’s case<p>“The reason I decided to go to the media now is because my lawyers and I have tried in vain to get the information. </p><p>“Every time we went there we were told the file has been misplaced. Two legal representatives have withdrawn, saying they cannot represent me since we are failing to get the medical record. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> ‘Gruesome discovery’: Missing teen girl found dead inside shack as stepfather linked to murder </p> </p> </p><p>“To show that the Department of Health and the management of the hospital are sabotaging my case – early this month I received an e-mail from my lawyers notifying me they would no longer represent me as the health department had offered them money to represent them against me. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“They then referred me to another law firm, which also dumped my case, saying they couldn’t assist me with the medical records.” </p><p>She said the lawyer withdrew just a few days before the matter could be heard in the Mpumalanga High Court. </p>A medical emergency with devastating consequences<p>Mkhabela said her baby, Anathi, was healthy until the incident that left her unable to speak and wheelchair-bound. In July 2015, the child had diarrhoea and was rushed to hospital, she said. </p><p>They waited for hours and later, when the child had more complications, they were taken to intensive care. </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: ‘Monument of corruption’: More suspects in court for Kimberley mental hospital scandal</p><p>“After a few hours I went inside and found there was a drip connected to her head. They told me that they could not locate the veins on the legs or hands, that’s why they opted for the head. At the time she looked okay.</p><p>“We spoke but after some minutes the child was unable to speak and they removed the drip and connected it to her hand. When I asked the doctor, I was told that water had entered the brain.” </p><p>She said the child was taken to a private hospital in Mbombela where doctors tried to drain the water from her head but it did not help. </p><p> </p>‘R100 000 debt’<p>“Now we are in R100 000 debt. I need the department to be held accountable and compensate my daughter for the damage they have caused.” </p><p>The Citizen has seen a letter a law firm sent to Mkhabela informing her that they were now representing the department against her. </p><p>Department spokesperson Dumisane Malamule refused to comment, saying the matter was in court. </p>‘We are being sabotaged’<p>Tony Mathe, a lawyer from Marweshe Attorneys, has also accused the department of sabotaging investigations into medical negligence. </p><p> </p><p>“We have been waiting for medical records from the department. We condemn this alleged act in the strongest terms and call for the law to take its full course.</p><p>“This incident takes place during Child Protection Week, a period dedicated to raising awareness about the rights, safety, and dignity of children. Picture: Gallo Images/Frennie Shivambu</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>While the City of Tshwane’s coalition partners celebrate the passing of its first fully funded budget since 2021 in council yesterday, the opposition has accused the city of using its residents as cash cows. </p><p>The coalition partners which included ANC, EFF, ActionSA, Good, DOP, ATM, PA, PAC and AIC said the budget represented a significant step toward restoring fiscal stability, advancing service delivery and meeting growing developmental needs of residents. </p>DA rejects budget as a betrayal of the poor<p>DA Tshwane spokesperson on finance Jacqui Uys however rejected the “farce that was the City of Tshwane’s budget”. </p><p>Uys said the ANC government disregarded Tshwane’s vulnerable communities because the watchman services budget was increased from R307 million in 2024 to R565 million. </p><p>“Tshwane’s budget, while promising to uplift and make life easier for the residents, is nothing but a protection of ANC patronage, while using residents as cash cows. The ANC has ignored opposition voices and included another punitive tax on residents. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Tough budget for Ekurhuleni </p> </p> </p><p>“The plan is to tax every single resident who cannot afford to make use of the city’s rubbish collectors, at R500 per month, by forcing them to pay R200 per month in the form of a city cleansing levy,” she said. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Tshwane’s R54.6bn budget draws mixed reactions</p>Private power plans and patronage concerns<p>Uys said the flawed budget was an exercise in protecting patronage networks with R20 million allocated to pay for an advisor that will facilitate transactions getting the Rooiwal and Pretoria West Power Stations operated privately, yet it was clear there is no plan to rid Tshwane of Eskom’s 93c/KwA wheeling tariff. </p><p>“No independent power producer will be able to sell electricity at a loss this tariff causes,” she said. Uys said it was clear that they wanted to keep Tshwane dependent on Eskom patronage. </p><p>“The deputy mayor in his budget speech celebrated that the water woes of Ikageng are over. Yet the taps are dry and water tankers can be found everywhere. Picture: Rizwan Tabassum / AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>“We don’t want war, we want peace with India, but we will always defend our sovereignty and our territorial integrity against any invasion,” says Pakistan’s acting high commissioner to South Africa, Fahad Amjad. </p><p>He was reacting to the recent war between India and Pakistan over Indian-administered Kashmir. </p><p>Amjad was explaining Pakistan’s position regarding what Islamabad called India’s “unprovoked and unjustified attacks” using coordinated missile, air and drone strikes on multiple locations inside Pakistan recently on 6 and 7 May. </p><p>Areas affected by the attack included Sialkot, Shakargarh, Muridke, Bahawalpur, Kotli and Muzaffarabad. The conflict began with alleged terrorist attacks on tourists on 22 April, killing 26 people. </p><p>But Amjad said India blamed the attack on Pakistan. The disputed territory is the subject of various UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Six killed in school bus bombing in SW Pakistan </p> </p> </p>Long-standing dispute rooted in history and religion<p>The core issue stems from a long-standing territorial dispute between India and Pakistan, dating back to the 1947 partition of India. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Both countries claim the entire region, but control only parts of it, leading to conflict and ongoing tensions. </p><p>The issue is further complicated by the region’s Muslim-majority population and the unresolved question of self-determination, which has been a major point of contention between India and Pakistan. </p><p>Since 2019, India has taken over the area as part of its union territory. But Amjad said India was not allowed to act unilaterally regarding the area and the final decision lay with the Kashmiri people through a plebiscite and via the UNSC. </p><p>ALSO READ: Six killed in school bus bombing in SW Pakistan</p><p> </p>Water treaty dispute deepens mistrust<p>The 1960 Water Treaty between the two countries, which was brokered by the World Bank, often also fuelled the conflict.</p><p>Pakistan accused India of unilaterally suspending the water treaty, which regulates the water flow between the two countries.</p><p>“We are dependent for our water needs on those rivers which come from India-controlled territories. </p><p>“We can’t do it unilaterally because the treaty is guaranteed by the World Bank, and the treaty has a mechanism that, in case of a dispute, we can refer it to a third party, like arbitration, or the World Bank can decide about it. </p><p> </p><p>“We will always follow the steps that we have in terms of the treaty,” Amjad said. </p>Civilian casualties and retaliation raise alarm<p>The situation was also exacerbated by the pro-government Indian media’s narrative that “we should crush Pakistan” and “we should attack Pakistan”, he said. </p><p>On 6-7 May, India hit between seven and eight targets in Pakistan. Between 20 and 22 people died in the attacks on the areas that India described as terrorist areas. </p><p>But according to Amjad, most of the victims were civilians, including children. Pakistan retaliated by shooting down some of the fighter jets that India used in the attacks. “In our response we said we will not target any civilians but only the military installations.” </p><p> </p><p>The confrontation between the two countries continued for two to three days. It subsided when various international players engaged with the leaders of both countries. </p><p>ALSO READ: India and Pakistan agree to ceasefire after days of attacks</p><p>A ceasefire brokered by the US was achieved. “As the policy of our government, we want to continue the ceasefire. But the Jammu-Kashmir issue remained unresolved.” </p>Calls for South African mediation and global peace effort<p>During a seminar with civil society organisations in Sandton on Wednesday night some suggested that South Africa, which championed the Palestinian cause in the ongoing Middle East war, should be involved in attempts to resolve the Pakistan-India Kashmir dispute. </p><p> </p><p>They claimed South Africa had to fulfil Nelson Mandela’s wish that the conflict should be resolved peacefully. </p><p>An international solution is needed, including taking the issue to the International Court of Justice. Zohra Kathrada, a niece of the late ANC stalwart Ahmed Kathrada, said as a family, they always stood with countries that were occupied. </p><p>“We stand in solidarity with any occupied country,” Kathrada said. Salman Khan said the Indian occupation of Jammu-Kashmir was as important as the occupation of Palestine by Israel. Fatima Domingo, of the SA Kashmir Action Group, said Pakistan response to India’s attacks was not aggression, but self-defence. </p><p>She condemned India for allegedly monopolising the water resources in the region. Speaking at the seminar, Amjad said Pakistan was ready for dialogue with India on all the issues, including Jammu-Kashmir. </p>‘We want to live in peace’<p>“We also welcome any kind of mediation from a friendly country. We want to live in peace. We don’t want war with any country. </p><p>“First, on this old issue, we will not attack. But if India attacks us, then we will have to respond. Second, we believe in the supremacy of international law, which we respect. We also expect that other countries should follow the policies, rules and regulations of international law,” Amjad said. </p><p>He expressed concern that India would do it again. “If something is done to Pakistan, we will respond to it. </p><p>“We also request that our international partners talk with India so that sense prevails and there are no confrontations. 3163006	有图 <p> Stormers stars Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Manie Libbok won"t be starting together against Glasgow, but could play together in the second half. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Manie-and-Damian-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Stormers stars Manie Libbok and Damian Willemse during their URC pool match against Cardiff in Cape Town two weeks ago.Picture: Shaun Roy/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson has made some bold selection decisions for their United Rugby Championship (URC) playoff game against Glasgow Warriors at the Scotstoun Stadium on Friday night (kick-off 8:35pm).</p><p>Key among them was the call to not play Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Manie Libbok together, even though the unfortunate suspension to star Damian Willemse completely opened the door for it.</p><p>Instead, Dobson opted to return Feinberg-Mngomezulu to flyhalf, after playing off the bench in their last game against Cardiff, while Libbok who had started at 10 in that match on his return from injury, was dropped to the bench.</p>Scintillating form<p>If Willemse had been available for the quarterfinal, this would not have been a surprising call, as Feinberg-Mngomezulu has been in absolutely scintillating form recently, and has driven a lot of the Stormers’ superb play during their stunning end of pool stage run that saw them win six out of seven games.</p><p>But with the double World Cup winning Springbok unavailable, it was expected that Feinberg-Mngomezulu would start at inside centre, while Libbok would hold on to the No 10 jersey after an impressive 55 minutes on his return from injury against Cardiff.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> URC result: Poor defence proves costly as Stormers knocked out by Glasgow </p> </p> </p><p>So it came as a surprise when the team was released and Feinberg-Mngomezulu was at flyhalf, and the solid Dan du Plessis at inside centre, with Dobson explaining that it had been a difficult decision.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“That did take a lot of talking through, and discussion around what we think we need for this game. We did consider playing Manie and Sacha together. Sacha and Damian are so alike, so there was a very strong argument for starting them both,” said Dobson.</p><p>“But then we had to consider other things, and in the end we had to consider that this would be less disruptive to the team. Sacha has been doing well at flyhalf and we have had a nice rhythm to our game.</p><p>“We still have Sacha and Manie, with Manie on the bench. Manie can come on later in the game and then Sacha can go where he is needed.”</p>Hartzenberg decision<p>Another surprising call was young Suleiman Hartzenberg, who has featured mainly on the wing for the Stormers and scored two tries in that position against Cardiff, being named at outside centre for the match, which is admittedly a position he sees himself playing in the future.</p><p> </p><p>Wandisile Simelane has also been superb for the Stormers at 13 recently, and is very unlucky to miss out, but Dobson admitted that the nature of the 4G pitch that they will be playing on swung the decision in Hartzenberg’s favour, even though he isn’t completely sure on whether it is the correct call.</p><p>“We looked at the opposition, we looked at how we want to defend and we looked at the surface. The way Suleiman played two weeks ago, admittedly on the wing, was excellent,” explained Dobson.</p><p>“And it’s not really a stepping kind of surface (which Simelane is known for). You need someone who can work back. We’ve got some tweaks to our defence where we think Suleiman will be really useful. Some plans around the aerial game. So it’s a horses for courses selection.</p><p>“But in terms of do I think he’s got enough games there under the belt? Probably not ideally, but you can’t account for injuries and suspensions. Picture: Steve Haag Sports/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Sharks captain Eben Etzebeth said he expected their game against Irish giants Munster to be very tight and probably be decided by which side has better discipline and the better goal-kicker on the day.</p><p>The teams clash in their United Rugby Championship quarter-final at Kings Park on Saturday (kick-off 6.30pm) after the Sharks finished third on the table and Munster ended sixth.</p><p>The Sharks are no strangers to just crossing the line. They won by three points or less in six matches this URC season. They also won once by four points and once by six points. That means the Sharks won by fewer than seven points in eight of their 13 victories.</p>‘We are used to it by now’<p>Reflecting on this, Etzebeth said that although fans have been frustrated this season, Sharks players and coaches have been too. We are used to it by now,” Ezebeth chuckled. “I think last season… we lost it tight [34–21 to Munster in 2023] and this year we actually turned them around and are winning them. That’s the difference. A couple of points and now all of a sudden you have a home quarter.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Hopefully we don’t have to make it that tight but it’s a quality side [Munster] and it’s probably going to come down to discipline on the day, who’s got the better goal-kicker. It’s going to be a very close game.”</p>Sharks have one of their best URCs yet<p>The Sharks captain praised the back-up players who stepped in during the team’s extended injury crisis. This included his own four-month injury lay-off, which he was grateful was over.</p><p>“We understand that some fans might be a bit frustrated. We as players and coaches are sometimes a bit frustrated with ourselves. But whatever happened before doesn’t really count anymore.</p><p>“If you also think about it, I think it’s the highest the Sharks have ever ended in the URC. It’s actually one of our best URCs yet.</p><p> </p><p>“We ended third with only Leinster and the Bulls above us. Historically, it was sort of successful but obviously now it’s play-offs.”</p><p>The Sharks are on a four-game winning streak. Munster have won their last two games, against Benetton and Ulster.</p><p>Head-to-head, the Sharks and Munster have beaten each other twice and drawn once. A commission of inquiry with broad and comprehensive terms of reference is an opportunity to establish the truth and provide guidance on any further action that needs to be taken,” Ramaphosa said.</p>Terms<p>Ramaphosa said the commission must inquire into, make findings, report on and make recommendations on:</p>Whether, why, to what extent and by whom attempts were made to influence members of the South African Police Service or National Prosecuting Authority not to investigate or prosecute cases identified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission;whether any members of the Saps or the NPA improperly colluded with such attempts to influence or pressure them;whether any action should be taken by an Organ of State, including possible further investigations or prosecutions, of persons who may have acted unlawfully;Whether the payment of any amount in constitutional damages to any person is appropriate;<p>The commission will cover the period from 2003 to the present and is expected to complete its work within six months from the date of Ramaphosa’s proclamation, submitting its report within 60 days after completing its work.</p>Enquiries<p>Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenaya, said that while the families of victims and the government have agreed to the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry, they were unable to reach a settlement on other matters in the application.</p><p> </p><p>“The government believes that these matters will be addressed through the commission of inquiry, while the families want the matters to be determined by a court”.</p><p>Magwenya said Ramaphosa respects the decision of the families to seek a court order to address the violation of their rights and seek constitutional damages through the courts.</p>Stay of application<p>However, the government was seeking a stay of application on these outstanding matters pending the conclusion and outcomes of the commission of inquiry.</p><p>“As the commission undertakes this important task, we welcome the firm commitment by the NPA and the South African Police Service to investigate and, where appropriate, to prosecute the outstanding TRC cases. In recent years, the NPA has reopened and pursued priority cases. Picture: Supplied</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Joburg North residents are asked to keep a lookout for escaped trafficking victims who may still be hiding in and around periurban areas in Laezonia, Centurion, according to Human trafficking extraction and care non-profits Reload Faith and The Value Of One. </p><p>The alert comes after private agencies and law enforcement rescued 29 suspected victims of human trafficking. </p><p>A group of young men were seen running through the area on Tuesday morning. </p>Victims of human trafficking rescued<p>Residents reported the group to authorities, believing they were trespassers. Some sustained injuries while escaping through fencing. Others were being treated for older wounds, allegedly caused by smugglers.” </p><p>After their arrest, several of the young men said they believed asking for help would require payment. </p><p>That raised concern among responders about the extent of manipulation and control to which the group had been subjected. </p><p> </p>Manipulation and control<p>Further searches in the area led to the discovery of another 16 individuals, bringing the total number found to 29. </p><p>Emergency services were called in to assist and all victims were offered food, water and medical attention before being transported to health care facilities. </p><p>Family members have since come forward, indicating that some of the victims may have been held captive for as long as eight months, the organisations wrote. </p><p>ALSO READ: WATCH: The moment Joshlin Smith’s mother was sentenced to life in prison</p><p> </p><p>Many of the victims were in hiding at the time of discovery. A translator familiar with the Ethiopian dialect was asked to assist with communication, as most of the rescued individuals had limited understanding of where they were or whom they could trust, the statement noted. </p><p>Local community members assisted by providing meals and water to the victims. </p><p>“There would never have been such a successful outcome had it not been for a police, emergency services and private security collaborative intervention,” said a representative of Reload Faith, who did not want to be named due to the sensitivity of the organisation’s work. </p>‘Trafficking is escalating’<p>“Human trafficking is escalating and combating it requires a massive, cross-functional team with as many role players as possible. Never forgotten. They are Joan Horn, Odette Boucher, Anne-Marie Wapenaar, Yolanda Wessels and Fiona Harvey. </p><p>Six teenagers who went missing in the ’80s as victims of paedophile Gert van Rooyen and his lover Joey Haarhoff. A three-year-old, Madeleine McCann, disappeared while on holiday with her family in Portugal in 2007. </p>Gert van Rooyen’s victims<p>Some children are lucky and have been saved. </p><p>Marius van der Merwe of QRF Task Team is frequently called in to aid with extractions of trafficked or kidnapped minors. It’s like a car. Once you’ve paid for a voetstoots sale, you drive off and never see the seller again.” </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Joshlin Smith sentencing: Kelly and co-accused handed life sentences</p><p>He noted, as with previous cases of child trafficking that he was involved in, the motive for the sale of a child is economic circumstance or a dependency on drugs. </p><p>Three years ago, he said, a case like Joshlin’s saw parents sell their daughter for R50 000. </p><p>On a tip-off, Van der Merwe, along with law enforcement, raided and extracted the toddler from the trafficker’s den in Joburg. </p><p> </p>Case similar to Joshlin’s three years ago<p>“She was a few days away from being sold,” he said. “And then she’d have been gone, forever.”</p><p>It is rare children are kidnapped, stolen, or sold, to childless couples who just want a kid of their own, Van der Merwe said. </p><p>“It’s not that it never happens, but at least in instances like that you know the child will end up in a home where they are wanted and cared for.” </p><p>ALSO READ: WATCH: The moment Joshlin Smith’s mother was sentenced to life in prison</p><p> </p><p>In Madeleine McCann’s case, Portuguese journalist Brendan de Beer has been investigating and covering the story for The Guardian and BBC’s Panorama for some time. He said the parents were ruled out and so was human trafficking. </p><p>“A few other suspects have emerged as time’s gone on, but nobody’s been charged with it,” he said. </p><p>“It would appear the consensus among those who’ve investigated the case, is it was a crime of opportunity, as opposed to being part of an organised human trafficking network, which potentially would have made the job of police a lot easier had they known who to look for.” </p><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Copy-of-weather-warnings-south-africa-5-september.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kate McCann, mother of Madeleine, who disappeared in Portugal; Anne-Marie Wapenaar; Fiona Harvey; Yolanda Wessels; Odette Boucher and Joan Horn. This despite a massive effort by law enforcement to solve the crime. </p><p> </p><p>“Young girls are traded or stolen for two primary reasons,” Van der Merwe said. </p><p>“They are either sold as sex slaves or, if they are very young, raised to become sex slaves. </p><p>ALSO READ: ‘I looked for Joshlin when I was mourning my own daughter,’ community member tells court</p><p>“Then, there are also paedophile rings who pay a premium for them, or they are sold off for human muti, slaughtered for their body parts. Particularly if they had attractive physical characteristics.” </p><p> </p><p>Van der Merwe said body parts like eyes, skin or organs are heavily traded in on the dark market, particularly north of the border. </p><p>He added there are several syndicates in operation in South Africa and that it works like a well-oiled machine. </p>Several syndicates operate in SA<p>“When a girl is 15 years old, she’s ready to be put on the table, for sale,” another source said. Picture: Supplied</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Imagine walking out on your husband, three children and a society that thinks it knows better than you do, only to return 15 years later and find the door still open but nothing else quite the same. </p><p>Theatre on The Square puts this notion forward in a new production A Doll’s House 2</p><p>A Doll’s House 2 picks up the story where the first play left off. </p><p>The first instalment, A Doll’s House, looked at the fate of main character Nora Helmer as a married woman. </p><p>There were no real opportunities for her to gain any kind of self-fulfilment in a male dominated world. In short, it was probably the world’s first feminist play, written by Norwegian playwright Hendik Ibsen and first performed in 1879.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> WATCH: Inala – an immersive performance telling the SA story </p> </p> </p><p>Back then, the idea of a woman abandoning her family to find herself was unthinkable. The final moment of that play, a single door closing behind Nora, echoed far beyond the theatre. It was not just scandalous; it caused quite a stir and has been doing so for well over a century and a half. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In fact, in 2006 it was one of the world’s most performed plays.</p>Everyone wanted to know what happened next<p>And yet, while Ibsen never wrote a sequel. Everyone wanted to know what happened next. </p><p>This second episode, now on stage at Theatre On The Square in Sandton, completes the circle. </p><p>It was penned by American playwright Lucas Hnath. The show stars veteran actor Zane Meas and led by highly-pedigreed South African performer Bianca Amato.</p><p> </p><p>“You really do not need to have seen part one to get into this,” Amato said. “It is a completely fresh take, with its own bite. The premise is simple. Nora returns because she discovers she is still legally married. She needs a divorce to finish what she started. She has made a name for herself in her worn right, openly criticising the institution of marriage. But her return sets off a chain of uncomfortable and often hilarious confrontations, said Amato.</p><p>The play throws four characters into a single room and lets the sparks fly. No one is let off the hook.</p><p> </p>‘It’s feisty, funny, moving and thought provoking’<p>“It is a really feisty, funny, moving and thought-provoking piece,” said Amato. “You will probably change your mind several times during the show. That is what makes it exciting. No one has all the answers. Everyone is flawed. And the arguments are compelling on all sides.”</p><p>The dialogue is modern, despite the period setting. The questions it raises are very much for today. Is marriage outdated? Can people change? Is it selfish to put your own growth before your obligations to others?</p><p>“It is incredibly relevant,” said director Barbara Rubin. “When I was preparing for this production, Kamala Harris was running for president in the United States. The backlash she faced as a qualified female candidate was brutal. It reminded me just how far we still must go. </p><p>“Spending time with Nora, who has become wiser and stronger, was a kind of comfort during that time.”</p><p> </p>A gloves-off debate<p>Rubin called the play a gloves-off debate, both personal and political. </p><p>“It is about how much has changed, and how much has not,” she said. “It is smart, but also very funny. That is what makes it work.”</p><p>Amato is loving the show. </p><p>“We are all bringing our best to this,” said Amato. “The production design is meticulous. The performances are sharp. The story is gripping. It is not some dusty drama. Picture: Jacques Nelles</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>This is a war game scenario which could not exist in South Africa today but, in the mid-’90s, as the country transitioned to democracy, it would have been one of many discussed by officers of the SA Defence Force (SADF), soon to become the SANDF (SA National Defence Force). </p><p>A force of rebels has taken over the eastern parts of mineral-rich Zaire – now know as the Democratic Republic of the Congo or DRC – has killed civilians and is now laying siege to the town of Kisangani. </p><p>The government in Kinshasa sends out an urgent appeal for help to Pretoria. </p><p>Putting boots on the ground would take weeks and would be politically risky, especially if SA troops were to start coming home in body bags. </p><p>There is an alternative: send in the South African Air Force (SAAF). So a flight of Cheetah D multirole fighters – a version of the French Mirage developed locally with help of the Israelis – is scrambled in the early hours of the morning from the SAAF main base in Waterkloof, Pretoria, loaded up with sophisticated air-toground missiles and cannons. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> SIU to investigate Defence department’s surgical mask tender from 2021 </p> </p> </p><p>As the sun peeps over the horizon in central Zambia, the Cheetahs link up with their airborne tanker, a converted Boeing 707 airliner also used by the SAAF as an airborne warning and control system. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: What is taking so long? Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The working conditions at a high school in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, have some questioning the methods of the new administration.</p><p>Information shared from those close to the school depicts a tense atmosphere, characterised by alleged favouritism and intimidation.</p><p>However, the province’s education department has backed the school’s management, saying that matters have improved considerably since the full-time appointment of a new principal less than two years ago.</p>Whistleblower concerns<p>Since the start of the year, a source inside Lowveld High School has documented several major concerns they shared with The Citizen. </p><p>The whistleblower, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal, said concerned staff members feel trapped as all avenues of complaint involve officials with aligned interests.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> ‘Gruesome discovery’: Missing teen girl found dead inside shack as stepfather linked to murder </p> </p> </p><p>Principal Elmon Thela officially took office in January 2024, but the whistleblower noted concerns over the appointment, which was signed off by an official currently facing accusations of tender irregularities.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Mpumalanga head of department Lucy Moyane was this week placed on precautionary suspension for her alleged role in a R2 million laptop procurement deal. </p><p>The source said that approaching the highest office in the province’s education structure, the MEC, would be futile, as management claims to have the department’s backing.</p><p>“Management is creating a toxic environment where they are suggesting that they can harm people,” the source said, explaining that staff are allegedly threatened with reminders about the province’s high level of unemployment. </p>Staff absenteeism<p>The source explained that heavy workloads and assigned tasks, some outside their core responsibilities, were causing staff to feel dejected.</p><p> </p><p>Attendance registers provided to The Citizen show a high level of absenteeism, which the whistleblower attributes to a decline in mental health. </p><p>“Staff morale is at an all-time low, with teachers especially being absent from school.</p><p>“An air of viciousness and toxicity reigns, and this translates to at least seven teachers being absent from school daily.</p><p>“Management has created an environment where there is fear. If you are seen not to be doing what they want you to do, you are targeted. If you raise issues, you are targeted,” they explained.</p><p> </p><p>Complaints are directed not only at the principal and his management team but also at the SGB chairperson, who has been blamed for enabling the current situation.</p><p>“We need a thorough investigation. Things are not right at the school,” the source said.</p>Unions sidelined<p>Recruitment is another area of concern, with the source alleging that interview processes are compromised due to the lack of an interview committee.</p><p>The whistleblower claimed that a minority union is given preferential access, while the two unions with the largest staff representation are kept in the dark.</p><p> </p><p>“There have been numerous interview processes this year. We are aware of three currently where there has been no union involvement. As a consequence of this, appointments are being made irregularly,” the source stated.</p><p>This preferential treatment, the sources said, is visible in general human resources issues where the absenteeism and dress code of some staff are ignored, while others are closely scrutinised with snide remarks.</p>Full support from the department<p>The Mpumalanga education department has fully supported the school’s management, stating that results have drastically improved.</p><p>“The information at the disposal of the department states to the contrary the allegations levelled against the school in question,” department spokesperson Gerald Sambo told The Citizen.</p><p> </p><p>“Since the introduction of the current principal, there has been impressive stability in the school. Almost all stakeholders are satisfied with the positive inroads that the school is making,”</p><p>“The results of the school are improving, as well as the conditions for learning and teaching. The challenges which were there are now a thing of the past,” Sambo explained.</p><p>The spokesperson noted that the school’s matric results had improved from 89.6% in 2022 to 96.4% in 2024, the principal’s first full year in charge.</p><p>2024’s matric class featured 253 students, 85 of whom earned passes that would allow them to study at a tertiary facility.</p><p>“To suggest that this is outstanding will be an understatement. Last Saturday’s 1-1 draw in the final of the first leg between Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids FC at Loftus Versfeld was a perfect example of a match that didn’t live up to the hype.</p><p>It was a damp squib that promised fireworks and delivered a flicker. It has further ignited an uncomfortable conversation that African football can no longer afford to ignore.</p><p>ALSO READ: Chiefs-linked striker inks new long term deal with Richards Bay</p><p>In today’s world of endless entertainment options, African football can’t afford to be stagnant. The strategies and structures that worked decades ago might no longer be relevant because the game has evolved, and so must we. African football is at risk of falling behind on the global stage if the current status quo remains.</p><p>UEFA recognised this reality in 2021 when it scrapped the away goals rule in its club competitions. Since then, the champions league has become a spectacle in the knockout rounds. Teams no longer play with the handbrake on, fearful of conceding a goal at home.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Egypt’s Pyramids seek support as they aim to take down Sundowns </p> </p> </p><p>Instead, matches have become open, entertaining and filled with goals. Just this season, the competition has produced 47 goals from the quarter-finals to the semi-finals across 12 games, with none of the games ending goalless.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>By comparison, a meagre 18 goals were scored in the same period of Africa’s elite club competition. The first legs of both semi-finals ended goalless. There were two other stalemates in the quarter-finals.</p><p>These numbers are more than just statistics, they are a reflection of what fans are being served. The current format in CAF encourages a conservative, often cynical brand of football. Teams are more interested in protecting slim leads and playing the numbers game rather than entertaining their fans or showcasing their full attacking potential.</p><p>We’ve reached a point where defensive tactics are praised, not out of admiration, but because we’ve normalised low-risk football. I’ve covered CAF football for years, and while the tournament remains one of the most magical in the world, I can’t ignore the concerning dip in quality and spectacle during the knockout stages.</p><p>Sundowns and Pyramids FC now have one game to change the narrative, but don’t hold your breath as Pyramids are likely to protect their slim advantage. They will waste time,play on the counter and this is because of a rule that prioritises caution over entertainment.</p><p> </p><p>Goals bring excitement and they help sell the sport to the younger audience. They should know about Teboho Mokoena just as much as they admire Jude Bellingham, but I have younger relatives that would rather watch Real Madrid play than continental football.</p><p>ALSO READ: Chelsea aim higher after Conference League triumph</p><p>The away goals rule may have had its time, but that time might be up. Picture: Sameer Al-Doumy / AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Favourites Paris Saint-Germain have their sights fixed on finally winning the Champions League trophy but a rugged and battle-hardened Inter Milan side stand in their way in Saturday’s final in Munich.</p><p>The climax to the European season has thrown up a mouthwatering clash of opposing styles and ideas of how to build a team. It is a contest between one of the continent’s old guard and one of the state-owned modern superclubs.</p>PSG’s holy grail<p>Despite enormous spending, PSG have never won the most glamorous prize in European club football and this is just their second final since the transformative Qatari takeover of the team from the French capital in 2011.</p><p>In 2020, during the pandemic, they lost the final to Bayern Munich behind closed doors in Lisbon, despite the presence of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar up front.</p><p>Adding an ageing and unmotivated Lionel Messi to that front line took them further away from European glory than at any point in the last decade and their thrilling run to Munich has come in the season after Mbappe followed the South American superstar duo out of the exit door.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> PICTURES: The best from the world of sport over the weekend </p> </p> </p><p>Mbappe thought a move to last year’s Champions League winners Real Madrid would improve his chances of getting his hands on the trophy. Instead Luis Enrique’s thrilling young Paris side — average age under 24 — has taken Europe by storm.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>When they last came to Munich in November and lost 1-0 to Bayern, they were in danger of being knocked out during the league phase in the first season since the competition’s new format was introduced.</p><p>A brilliant comeback win in January against 2023 champions Manchester City was the catalyst for a superb run as PSG eliminated three more Premier League sides — Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal — en route to the final.</p>‘Make history’<p>Ousmane Dembele has been the standout with 33 goals in all competitions, ably assisted by fellow forwards Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola and January signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.</p><p>Others like Achraf Hakimi, formerly of Inter and perhaps the world’s best full-back, and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma have also been superb for the French league and cup double winners.</p><p> </p><p>“We know what kind of football we want to play and now we just need to go out and do it to our full potential,” said their Spanish coach, who is looking to win his second Champions League title, a decade after leading Messi’s Barcelona to glory in Berlin.</p><p>“It is always very difficult to get to the final of the Champions League. All players and coaches dream of playing in it but most don’t get the chance.</p><p>“We want to be the first ones in Paris to win the Champions League and make history.”</p><p>That, remarkably, would make them just the second French club to win the competition — if they are looking for an omen then Marseille’s 1993 triumph also came in Munich, across the city at the old Olympic Stadium, and against Inter’s city rivals AC Milan.</p><p> </p>Italian experience<p>Inter, meanwhile, are bidding to win a fourth European Cup to add to back-to-back triumphs under Helenio Herrera in the 1960s, and the 2010 victory against Bayern in Madrid, under Jose Mourinho.</p><p>Coach Simone Inzaghi was already in charge when the Nerazzurri got to the final two years ago and lost narrowly to City.</p><p>As many as eight of the team that started that night in Istanbul could do so again here, where Inter have also already played this season.</p><p>Inzaghi’s side beat Bayern in the quarter-finals before getting the better of Barcelona in the last four in one of the all-time great Champions League ties, especially the epic second leg in the rain at San Siro.</p><p> </p><p>“To really make history we have to win on Saturday,” said Inzaghi, whose likely starting line-up will feature three players aged 36 or over.</p><p>Inter will set up in a 3-5-2 formation that contrasts sharply with the 4-3-3 of PSG, and it will be fascinating to see how they respond to losing out to Napoli for the Serie A title on the last day of the season.</p><p>“We know that it will be difficult, we know that we’re facing a super team just like Barcelona and Bayern Munich but they will come up against a team which has the same goal as PSG.
