Picture: Nigel Sibanda/ The Citizen</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Tensions boiled on the streets of Riverpark in Alexandra after community members threatened City Power officials who had come to disconnect the power. </p><p>City Power had planned a cut-off to ‘crack down on illegal electricity connections in Riverpark, Alexandra. </p><p>The area had been identified as a high-risk area plagued by widespread illegal connections and growing resistance from customers who openly refuse to pay for electricity.</p><p>“Most of the residents in that area have bypassed meters or connected directly to the network, leading to infrastructure overload, frequent outages, and heightened risk of fire hazards”, the utility said.</p><p>However, when officials came to remove the illegal connections, residents pounced.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> City Power crackdown on illegal connections met with resistance in Alexandra </p> </p> </p><p>The Citizen was on the scene when residents shook a ladder holding a City Power employee, warning that if they cut the power they would not leave the ladder.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Others blew whistles and shouted threats until the officials backed down and headed out of the area.</p><p>WATCH: Alexandra residents threaten a #CityPower official during a crack down operation on illegal electricity connections in the area.#TheCitizenNews</p><p>📹: Molemo Tladi pic.twitter.com/ZqGQ4EQ98i</p>— The Citizen News (@TheCitizen_News) May 29, 2025</p>Disgruntled community members<p>A community leader, Ashford Sedzumo, told The Citizen that earlier this week City Power had cut off their electricity. Residents who were affected were told to pay R2 000 but allegedly had their power cut off again.</p><p>They believed they had a “positive” agreement with the utility after the community shut down City Power’s offices on Wednesday, preventing vehicles from leaving the premises and officials from assisting with outages.</p><p> </p><p>“We are very angry with these people, I don’t know what they are taking us for. Just yesterday, we had a march to their offices and stayed there for two and a half hours. Our leaders came back with positive results”, said Alex resident Tsietsi Khungoane.</p><p>“These people [City Power officials] said they will work closely with us, and they will come back to tell us when the right time is to cut off illegal connections. </p><p>“All of a sudden, we are surprised they are here today. They told no one, they just came here with cars escorted by Metro Police and SAPS.”</p><p>Another resident, Tlaleng Mmoa, claimed City Power had “manipulated the situation” and reneged on an agreement.</p><p> </p><p>“There was an agreement that said City Power will come on the 9th of June. When they come on that date, everyone who is illegally connected should have bought electricity worth R 500, and they won’t cut off their power. Nigeria’s Akinwumi Adesina as head of the African Development Bank.</p><p>In 2015 it took six rounds of voting to elect Adesina as president of the AfDB, which was founded in 1964 and now has 81 members, including 54 African nations.</p><p>Five candidates started on Thursday, with Zambian economist Samuel Munzele Maimbo in the lead after the first round with 40.41 percent of votes, ahead of Mauritania’s former economy minister Sidi Ould Tah on 33.21 percent.</p><p>Senegal’s Amadou Hott was third with 17.62 percent, followed by South African former AfDB vice president Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala on 8.24 percent.</p><p>The Chadian former governor of the Bank of Central African States, Abbas Mahamat Tolli, dropped out of the contest after getting 0.52 percent of votes.</p><p> <p> <p> …</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The election is looking like a two-horse race between the top two contenders, who must secure both a majority of votes from all member countries and a majority of votes from African nations.</p><p>Maimbo obtained 26.57 percent of African votes in the first round while Tah secured 47.03 percent.</p><p>The weight of each shareholder state is determined by the extent of its capital contribution to the bank.</p><p>As such, the five largest African contributors — Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, South Africa and Morocco — will be especially courted, with the United States and status</p>Five priorities<p>Based in Ivory Coast’s economic capital Abidjan, the AfDB is one of the world’s largest multilateral development banks and is funded by member subscriptions, loans raised on global markets as well as repayments and income from loans.</p><p>But Adesina’s successor will immediately face a disrupted international economic environment, notably due to announcements from the US Trump administration.</p><p> </p><p>Beyond tariffs, the AfDB is also facing the threat of losing 500 million dollars in US funding for its projects to support low income countries on the continent.</p><p>All candidates are promising to make the AfDB even more effective to transform Africa, continuing Adesina’s five priorities to light up, feed, industrialise, integrate and improve quality of life.</p><p>“I am proud of the legacy we are leaving behind for… my successor, for the bank and for Africa,” the outgoing president said in a speech on Tuesday.</p><p>ALSO READ: Bank data development and geopolitical environment,” he added.</p><p>Adesina said 565 million people had benefited from AfDB projects during his decade in charge.</p><p>Major projects include support for the construction of the Gabal El Asfar wastewater treatment plant in Egypt — the largest in Africa.</p><p>The bank also helped finance a bridge connecting Senegal and the Gambia, expanded the port of Lome in Togo and supported sanitation projects in Lesotho and access to electricity in Kenya, he said.</p><p> </p><p>From 2015 to this year, the bank’s capital more than tripled from $93 billion to $318 trade strategy.</p><p>The opinion marks a significant setback to Trump as he bids to redraw the US trading relationship with the world by forcing governments to the negotiating table through tough new tariffs.</p><p>Trump’s global trade war has roiled financial markets with a stop-start rollout of import levies aimed at punishing economies that sell more to the United States than they buy.</p><p>Trump argued that the resulting trade deficits and the threat posed by the influx of drugs constituted a “national emergency” that justified widespread tariffs.</p><p>But the three-judge Court of International Trade ruled Wednesday that Trump had overstepped his authority, and barred most of the duties announced since he took office in January.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> You national emergency,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement.</p><p>“President Trump pledged to put America first, and the administration is committed to using every lever of executive power to address this crisis and restore American greatness,” Desai said.</p>China: ‘cancel wrongful tariffs’<p>The ruling comes as Trump was using the tariffs as leverage in trade negotiations with friends and foes, including the European Union and China.</p><p> </p><p>Beijing — which was hit by 145 percent tariffs before they were sharply reduced to give space for negotiations — reacted to the court ruling by saying the United States should scrap the levies.</p><p>“China urges the United States to heed the rational voices from the international community and domestic stakeholders and fully cancel the wrongful unilateral tariff measures,” said commerce ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian.</p><p>Japan’s tariffs envoy Ryosei Akazawa said as he left for a fourth round of talks in Washington nearly all trading partners on April 2, at a baseline 10 percent, plus steeper levies on dozens of economies, including China and the European Union.</p><p>The US court’s ruling also quashes duties that Trump imposed on Canada, Mexico and China separately using emergency powers.</p><p>But it leaves 25-percent duties on the auto, steel and aluminum industries intact.</p><p>Some of the turmoil was calmed after Trump paused the larger tariffs for 90 days pending negotiations.</p><p> </p><p>Asian markets rallied on Thursday and US futures pointed to early gains, but Europe was mixed, with London in the red while Paris and Frankfurt rose.</p><p>The ruling “throws into disarray several trade deals that have already been agreed, and those that are still in the negotiation phase,” said Kathleen cases — brought by businesses and a coalition of state governments — arguing that the president had violated Congress’s power of the purse.</p><p> </p><p>The judges said the cases rested on whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA) delegate such powers to the president “in the form of authority to impose unlimited tariffs on goods from nearly every country in the world.”</p><p>“The court does not read IEEPA to confer such unbounded authority and sets aside the challenged tariffs imposed thereunder.”</p><p>The judges stated that any interpretation of the IEEPA that “delegates unlimited tariff authority is unconstitutional.”</p><p>Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the ruling confirmed that “these tariffs are an illegal abuse of executive power.”</p><p>“Trump’s declaration of a bogus national emergency to justify his global trade war was an absurd and unlawful use of IEEPA,” he said.</p><p>ALSO READ: Tom Economics said the case may end up in the hands of the Supreme Court.</p><p>“But it would be unlikely to mark the end of the tariff war given the various other routes through which the Trump 3163039	有图 <p> Residents have been advised to implement water conservation measures and establish contingency plans. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Tap-Water.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Photo: iStock </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Rand Water has successfully commenced its major B16 pipeline maintenance programme this morning, with valve isolation already completed.</p><p>The utility is currently undergoing extensive infrastructure work that will disrupt water supplies across Johannesburg and surrounding areas for up to 21 days.</p><p>The critical maintenance, which began at 3am on Thursday, 29 May, marks the start of a comprehensive programme running until July 21, 2025.</p><p>According to the utility, the maintenance is designed to improve network reliability and increase operational capacity across the Gauteng region.</p>Rand Water maintenance first phase underway<p>The initial phase involves connecting the newly constructed B16 pipeline from Zuikerbosch Station 5, requiring the complete shutdown of pumping operations at Mapleton station for 107 hours until 2 June at 5pm.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Tshwane’s water warning to residents </p> </p> </p><p>Rand Water’s planned tie-in of B16 pipeline from Zuikerbosch Station 5, which will take pumping at the Mapleton pumping station offline for 107 hours, is expected to impact the cities of Ekurhuleni and Tshwane.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The utility confirmed on Thursday morning that the maintenance programme had begun and that isolating valves had been completed successfully.</p><p>Rand Water B16 planned maintenance commenced this morning, and the isolating of valves has been completed.#RWPlannedMaintenance2025#RWWaterDemand #RWWaterSupply #RWWaterSustainability </p><p>[LE] pic.twitter.com/oliDrXomBZ</p>— Rand Water (@Rand_Water) May 29, 2025 Eight-phase programme timeline<p>The comprehensive programme includes eight distinct phases of work, with varying impact levels designated by colour-coded severity ratings ranging from minor 22-hour installations to major 21-day cleaning operations.</p><p>Following the current B16 connection work, the second phase will continue on May 29-30.</p><p> </p><p>This involves pump set disconnection and removal for overhaul at Amanzimtoti Pumping Station, lasting 13.5 hours with no pumping operations during this period.</p><p>The third phase will commence on May 30 and affect the Sasolburg 1 Reservoir for two weeks until June 15.</p><p>This major operation will completely halt supply to the reservoir. It will impact water distribution to:</p>Metsimaholo, Ngwathe, and Emfuleni areas throughout the duration.<p>Between 3 June and 2 July, multiple overlapping maintenance activities will create compounding supply challenges.</p><p> </p><p>As part of the fourth phase, these include a 22-hour Russell Road meter installation on June 3. </p><p>The fourth phase will impact Primrose and surrounding areas. </p><p>It will be followed by a 48-hour Zuikerbosch leak repair from June 30 to July 2 that will affect the Eikenhof system and reduce pumping capacity to just 50% for 42 hours.</p><p>Thereafter, the sixth phase will go on for 50 hours for the replacement of defective Zwartkopjes station valves.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ:Municipal water crisis ‘nothing to do with bulk water supply’, says minster at LHWP reopening</p>Rand water major tank cleaning operation<p>The longest disruption will occur during the final phases, with Vereeniging Sedimentation Tank cleaning scheduled from Friday 30 June to 21 July.</p><p>This 21-day operation represents the most extensive maintenance activity in the programme, reducing pumping at Eikenhof to 80% capacity for the entire duration.</p><p>“The maintenance work has been strategically scheduled during the low consumption months of May to July 2025 to minimise disruptions and better manage the potential impact on water supply”, according to information provided to residents.</p><p> </p><p>The last phase, phase 8, will run for 50 hours. 3163038	有图 <p> Despite most economists believing that the Reserve Bank would leave the repo rate unchanged at 7.50%, the MPC decided on a cut. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Repo-rate-cut.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee decided to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.25%, thanks to a lower-than-expected inflation rate and a stronger-than-expected rand.</p><p>Announcing the decision of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) this afternoon, South African Reserve Bank (SARB) governor Lesetja Kganyago said global economic conditions have been volatile since the last MPC meeting in March.</p><p>“Higher tariffs on imports into the US have been announced, but then partly reversed. </p><p>“US assets have sold off, while alternative safe havens, such as gold and the euro, performed well. </p><p>“The combination of higher trade barriers, plus elevated uncertainty, is likely to weaken the world economy. We have therefore lowered our global growth projections.”</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Reserve Bank could cut repo rate on Thursday, but will it decide to? </p> </p> </p><p>However, he pointed out that prospects for global inflation are more complex. The US could experience higher inflation from tariffs and supply-chain disruptions. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Those supply-chain problems could also increase prices in other economies. At the same time, inflation could be lower given weaker world growth, cheaper oil and abundant capacity in economies like China.</p><p>“Given these conditions, we see global interest rates slightly lower this year. The US Federal Reserve has kept rates unchanged recently, but other major central banks, such as the Bank of England and the European Central Bank, have cut their policy rates.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Reserve Bank could cut repo rate on Thursday, but will it decide to?</p>Disappointing growth in mining and manufacturing, while unemployment spiked<p>Turning to South Africa, Kganyago said the official data for growth in the first quarter of 2025 is not available yet, but the indicators for sectors such as mining and manufacturing have been disappointing, while unemployment increased.</p><p> </p><p>“In our last meeting, we warned of downside risks to our growth forecast. We have now trimmed our gross domestic product (GDP) projections and currently expect growth of 1.2% this year, rising to 1.8% by 2027. </p><p>“The outlook for structural reforms remains positive, but there are also headwinds like lower global growth.”</p><p>He said, given the lower forecast, the MPC assess the risks to growth as balanced.</p><p>ALSO READ: Repo rate: Will Reserve Bank cut or err on side of caution?</p><p> </p>Inflation forecast revised down<p>Moving to prices, Kganyago pointed out that inflation was below 3% again in April. </p><p>“The undershoot of the target mainly reflects falling fuel costs, but underlying inflation is also well contained. Core inflation came in at 3%, at the bottom of our target range.</p><p>“Looking forward, we have revised down our inflation forecasts. This reflects the lower starting point, as well as a stronger exchange rate assumption and lower world oil prices. </p><p>“These factors offset pressure on fuel costs from the higher fuel levy announced in the Budget. In addition, our previous forecast included Vat increases, which have since been cancelled. We see balanced risks to this forecast.”</p><p> </p><p>Kganyago said the threat of rand depreciation that the MPC warned of at its last meeting, given global as well as domestic factors, manifested last month, with the currency briefly touching a multi-year low against the US dollar.</p><p>“However, the exchange rate has since recovered, and conditions seem more settled than they did in March, even if the global environment remains uncertain.</p><p>“Against this backdrop, the MPC decided to reduce the repo rate by 25 basis points. Five members favoured this action, while one preferred a cut of 50 basis points.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Inflation for April only 2.8%: Is a repo rate cut coming next week?</p><p> </p>MPC considered two scenarios for repo rate<p>Kganyago said while the inflation outlook appears benign, the MPC considered an adverse scenario which illustrates the upside risks based on a global slowdown, triggered by escalating trade tensions, where the rand depreciates sharply.</p><p>“The scenario showed how a country with some fundamental vulnerabilities, like South Africa, risks stagflation, with growth moving lower while inflation rises due to currency weakness. In these conditions, monetary policy tightens to stabilise the macroeconomy.”</p><p>The MPC also considered a scenario with a 3% inflation objective, which corresponds to the low end of the SARB’s target range. </p><p>“For some years now, internal and external analysis has shown that our inflation target is too high and too wide.</p><p>“National Treasury and the SARB engaged extensively on this issue and technical work is at an advanced stage. Now that inflation has slowed, we have a chance to lock in lower inflation at low cost. This scenario illustrates that opportunity.</p><p>For a 3% objective, our Quarterly Projection Model shows a lower path for interest rates. Both our baseline and the 3% scenario have a cut in this quarter. </p><p>However, rates move steadily lower in the scenario as inflation comes down.</p><p>“The policy rate falls to just under 6%, rather than staying above 7%, as in the baseline. When a leader of the Free World visits your country, the security must be heightened.</p><p>“We are all equal and we are all sovereign, but some are more equal than others, so the security needs to be heightened.</p><p>“[Chinese President] Xi Jinping being here, you have to heighten the security. If he comes, there will be heightened security, like security will be heightened for all the foreign dignitaries that come through,” she said.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> ‘There is no white genocide happening here,’ says Trump’s top pastor after SA visit </p> </p> </p>South Africa’s crime problem<p>Ntshavheni was part of a delegation of South African politicians and businesspeople who recently visited the US to meet with Trump in a bid to reset relations between Pretoria and Washington.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It was at this meeting that South Africa’s crime problems were displayed in front of international media.</p><p>During this meeting, South African billionaire Johann Rupert told Trump that crime is also out of control in the Western Cape.</p><p>He compared gangsters in the Cape Flats to rebel militia in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).</p><p>Ntshavheni faced tough questions from reporters about international concerns over crime in South Africa.</p><p> </p><p>However, she said there were interventions to clamp down on crime and all illegal activities in the country.</p><p>“There is an acceptance and an acknowledgement that crime in South Africa affects all of us, whether you are in suburbia, a township, or a village.</p><p>“The statistics indicated a decline in some categories of crime, such as murder. However, the decision does not concern the merits or allegations of the case, but rather whether South African courts have jurisdiction in the matter.</p><p>“MTN Group confirms that it submitted its notice of intention to appeal the recent decision of the South African Supreme Court of Appeal in the matter brought by Turkcell,” the Group told The Citizen.</p><p>MTN Group stated, “The appeal was lodged against a High Court judgment, in which the High Court had dismissed Turkcell’s case against MTN Group on the basis that the South African courts did not have jurisdiction.</p><p>“The SCA has set aside the judgment and decided that the South African courts do have jurisdiction. The SCA, however, upheld the High Court ruling that Iranian law is applicable to key aspects of the dispute.”</p><p> </p>MTN confident it will win<p>“The decision to uphold the appeal does not relate to the merits of Turkcell’s claims or the allegations made against the Group, which have not yet been tested in court.</p><p>“MTN has always maintained that the Turkcell litigation was without merit and has expressed confidence that it would successfully defend these proceedings,” added the Group.</p><p>In response to The Citizen, the Group further said, “MTN maintains that, while it agrees that Iranian law governs the underlying dispute, the allegations raised by Turkcell should be adjudicated in the courts of Iran, which are the appropriate and competent forum for this matter.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Iran haunts MTN and SA</p><p> </p>Was anyone bribed?<p>The legal battle between MTN and Turkcell began in 2013, when the Turkish telecommunications company accused MTN of bribing Iranian and South African officials to secure a multi-billion-dollar GSM telecom license in Iran.</p><p>Cedric Soule, global counsel for Turkcell, stated that the license was initially awarded to the Turkish telecommunications company, but it was subsequently overturned in 2005.</p><p>Former Chairman of the Group Phuthuma Nhleko and director Irene Charnley have also been accused of being influential figures who were closely involved in the deal.</p>Tactic to delay the trial<p>“This is the latest attempt by MTN and the other defendants to delay the trial. The SCA clearly decided that South African courts have jurisdiction in this matter and unequivocally rejected all the objections raised by MTN,” added Soule.</p><p> </p><p>“We remain confident that when the full evidence is presented at trial, it will demonstrate that MTN engaged in corrupt practices to secure the Iranian licence initially awarded to Turkcell.”</p><p>Turkcell believes the Constitutional Court should decline to hear the appeal filed by MTN and the other defendants.</p><p>“The SCA’s decision represents a significant victory for the principle that South African companies should be held accountable in South Africa for their conduct abroad.”</p>Hoffmann report<p>“After twelve years of procedural delays, Turkcell looks forward to the opportunity to present its evidence in court and seek appropriate redress for the more than $4.2 billion in damages suffered due to MTN’s alleged misconduct,” said Soule.</p><p> </p><p>In 2013, the Hoffmann report found that the license to MTN was awarded lawfully, clearing the group of any wrongdoing.</p><p>The Committee, which compiled the report, was appointed by MTN in 2012. 3163034	有图 <p> A number of players on the fringes of the Springboks will be eager to impress for their franchises in the URC playoffs this weekend. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Hanekom-Roos-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Bulls eighthman Cameron Hanekom and Stormers eighthman Evan Roos will both be looking to impress in the URC playoffs ahead of the coming international season where they will both hope to be in the Springbok mix.Picture: Grant Pitcher/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The United Rugby Championship (URC) knockouts are set and ready to go, with the quarterfinals to be battled out over the next three days, with South African hopes resting with the Bulls, Sharks and Stormers.</p><p>All three teams will be eager to progress as far as possible, while several players will be aiming to show their worth, first to try help their side get through to the semi-finals and final and then lift the title, and second to prove that they belong at the highest level, playing on the international stage for the Springboks.</p><p>With a match against invitational team, the Barbarians, at the end of June, and the Incoming Series against Italy and Georgia in July, a number of fringe players and youngsters could get a chance to break into the Bok fold and make a claim to become a regular member of the team.</p><p>Here are six players, two from each franchise, that will be aiming to blow the lights out during the URC playoffs over the next few weeks.</p>Bulls<p>Cameron Hanekom</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> URC result: Poor defence proves costly as Stormers knocked out by Glasgow </p> </p> </p><p>It has been a second straight scintillating season for the Bulls loose forward, and he must certainly have his hat firmly in the ring to get a run for the Boks this season, to add to the one cap picked up on last year’s end of year tour.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Eighthman has had a slight question mark on it since the retirement of Duane Vermeulen after the last World Cup, with Jasper Wiese the current incumbent, while Siya Kolisi has shown for the Sharks this season that he can also assist there when needed, so Hanekom will want to prove there is no need for anyone else.</p><p>Johan Grobbelaar</p><p>Hooker has been a problem position for the Boks over the past few years, with them struggling to find a regular third choice option behind Malcom Marx and Bongi Mbonambi. With Mbonambi getting on in years — he is currently 34 — it is vitally important that the Boks find another option for the No 2 jersey.</p><p>Grobbelaar has been on the Bok fringes and played a few games, but has been unable to take his chance as of yet, and he will be desperate to impress, especially with his teammate, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, who can cover both prop and hooker, showing some top recent form which will give him a leg up.</p><p> </p>Sharks<p>Vincent Tshituka</p><p>There have been rumblings about Tshituka representing the Springboks ever since his time at the Lions, but the Congo-born, Johannesburg-bred loose forward has been caught up in a nightmare of bureaucratic red tape around his citizenship for the past few years.</p><p>Finally at the end of last year both Vincent and his brother Manu (Emmanuel) were given their SA citizenship and passports, but they were still unable to represent the Boks without an SA ID, which they received last month. </p><p>Vincent was immediately brought into the Boks’ recent alignment camp and he will now want to back that up in the playoffs and force his way into the playing squad.</p><p> </p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Tshituka-brothers-URC-Boks.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>Brothers Emmanuel and Vincent Tshituka have Bok colours in their sights. Picture: Gallo Images</sub><p>Ethan Hooker</p><p>The rising young utility back talent has backed up a breakout previous season with another solid campaign, and he will be eyeing a Springbok debut over the coming international season. The 22-year-old Hooker impressed so much in his debut senior campaign last season that he was brought into the Bok fold.</p><p>He attended alignment camps and was in the extended squad ahead of the opening Test against Wales last year, but didn’t make his debut. He will thus be aiming to put in some monster performances in the URC playoffs, and force his way into the reckoning to make the next step up.</p>Stormers<p>Evan Roos</p><p> </p><p>A lot of noise was made after the Stormers eighthman was left out of the second Bok alignment camp, despite having enjoyed another top season for his franchise. Despite his fantastic form for the Stormers, he has yet to fully take the few Bok opportunities he has received over the past few years and impress.</p><p>His terrific franchise form should, however, see him get another crack in the green and gold this season, but a strong showing in the playoffs could just make that a certainty. With huge competition emerging for the Bok No 8 jersey, it is imperative for Roos to make a statement, and back that up if he gets another shot for the national side.</p><p>Suleiman Hartzenberg</p><p>Like Hooker, Hartzenberg is another young exciting rising utility back talent that looks ready to make the step up. The 22-year-old’s trajectory is eerily similar to the Sharks talent, with them both playing together for the Junior Boks.</p><p> </p><p>But Hartzenberg has made an earlier and bigger mark at franchise level, recently making his 50<sup>th</sup>appearance for the Stormers. He has also been a part of the Bok alignment camps, but hasn’t made it into the squad yet, and he will want to back up his brilliant recent form, since returning from injury, in the playoffs and make sure he is considered come the start of the international season.</p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Suleiman-Hartzenberg-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>Suleiman Hartzenberg of the Stormers. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Orlando Pirates forward Relebohile Mofokeng has reflected on which areas of his game he needs to improve next season. </p><p>The 20-year-old attacker had an amazing 2024 season and was a fan favourite of the Pirates fans because of his trickery and skill. </p><p>ALSO READ: Ncikazi raises hand for Pirates job as Timm leaves</p><p>Mofokeng was named Man of the Match in Pirates’ final game of the season against Magesi FC at the Orlando Stadium. </p><p>Speaking after the game, “Coco melon” revealed the areas he need to improve in the coming season. </p>‘I just need to continue to improve’<p>“I think I did well this season. So I just need to continue to improve and work hard. So I just need to continue,” said Mofokeng.</p><p>“I think a place where I can improve is to score because that’s the only thing missing in my game. I can create and assist. But it’s only my lack of scoring, but I think I can improve with a lot of practice.”</p><p>Mofokeng also indicated that fatigue might have played a role in his dip in form towards the end of the season. </p><p>“It has been a long season because we have been involved in competitions like the CAF [Champions League] and the Nedbank Cup. We are not used to playing so many games. So I think we did well. Picture: Gallo Images/Frennie Shivambu</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A 59-year-old police captain accused of raping two trainees at the Tshwane Police Academy has been suspended without pay, pending disciplinary proceedings.</p><p>The accused appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for the continuation of his bail application.</p><p>The captain, who serves as an instructor at the academy in Pretoria West, faces charges of rape and sexual assault.</p><p>The incident occurred on 6 May, when the captain allegedly called a 20-year-old trainee into his office while she was walking with her platoon to their sleeping quarters. </p><p>ALSO READ: Police sergeant abuses power, gets 20 years for raping victim inside police station</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Tshwane’s water warning to residents </p> </p> </p><p>According to the South African Police Service (Saps), he locked the door and threatened her with disciplinary action over a previous incident from April, in which she had allegedly failed to salute him. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It is then alleged that he raped her. </p><p>Following his arrest the next day, a second trainee came forward with allegations that the same captain sexually assaulted her on 17 March.</p><p>More victims may still come forward as the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) continues its investigation into other possible incidents.</p>Tshwane Police Academy instructor suspended after rape<p>Speaking to the media outside court on Thursday, national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that further investigations are underway and additional resources have been allocated to the case by National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.</p><p> </p><p>“We are now aware that a second victim has come forward. Initially, we had one victim that was allegedly raped on the 6th of May, and within less than 24 hours, we managed to effect the arrest.</p><p>“We have been creating that awareness within the academy to ensure our police trainees speak out against gender-based violence. Our academies are meant to be safe havens. </p><p>“They are not in an environment where the youth, young people in this country are meant to be violated,” she said.</p><p>READ MORE: Man’s appeal to overturn life sentence for raping his 7-year-old step-granddaughter denied</p><p> </p><p>Mathe also confirmed that the captain has been officially suspended from duty.</p><p>“We have suspended his salary. We have also suspended him, and his disciplinary hearing is expected to be heard on the 4th and 5th of June.”</p><p>The state is opposing his release on bail.</p><p>“From the day of his arrest, the 7th of May, he has been in police custody… and we will support the opposing of bail.”</p><p> </p><p>She further confirmed that the first complainant has been receiving psychological and emotional support from Saps.</p><p>“The 20-year-old police trainee has been receiving maximum support from our employee health and wellness unit. Watching your kids indulge in two hours of high fun, priceless.</p><p>NuNu The Artist is a studio in Melrose Arch that’s run by a former accountant, not a la de da artist who may pass judgment on your messy picture. </p><p>Owner Zara Cindy Mullah started the business for the same reasons that you and I would spend time there. There are mounted canvas sessions for those wanting to paint a picture, but also tote bag painting, pottery glazing, and a splash area that allows you to throw and splash paint without anyone asking you to clean it up. </p><p>“We’ve got a splash area where customers can just go wild on their canvases,” Mullah said. </p><p>“You’d be surprised at the result. We sometimes leave canvases in there for weeks, letting people add to them. In the end, it’s this collaborative, abstract piece created by dozens of hands.”</p>There’s no judgment or critique, just fun<p>The environment caters to all ages and levels of comfort. There’s no judgment, no critique, no hovering instructor correcting your brush strokes. There are members of staff, all art graduates or students, willing to help at every turn. It’s become a surprising hit for team-building exercises.</p><p>“We’ve had whole legal teams in here trying to piece together a collective image, talking about colour palettes and making sure the lines match up,” she said. “It gets people to connect in a different way.”</p><p> </p><p>But before the paint pots and brushes, Mullah was lived inside spreadsheets. </p><p>“I’m not an artist by training,” she said. “I studied accounting. I’ve done certificates and diplomas in art later on, but no visual arts degree. Still, I always loved art, and when I got involved in the studio, I realised how much joy it brings.”</p><p>The studio was originally affiliated with a franchise, but in March this year, it officially became its own brand.</p><p> “We rebranded and made it a family business,” she said. “NuNu was my nickname growing up, and it just felt right to build something personal under that name.”</p><p> </p>The comfort to try something new<p>NuNu The Artist now operates two locations, the studio at Melrose Arch and a space at the old Keth Kirsten’s nursery in Parktown North. </p><p>Both spaces have been designed to feel inspiring and accessible. </p><p>“We wanted places where people could be comfortable enough to try something new,” she said. “Whether it’s a toddler splashing paint on a mug or a grandparent painting a plate, it’s about making memories.”</p><p>ALSO READ: New film unveils the world of John Lennon and Yoko Ono</p><p> </p><p>Mullah said that the emotional power of a blank canvas can be intimidating at first. </p><p>“We had a woman who sat for nearly half an hour and just cried before she could start,” she said. </p><p>“She hadn’t touched a brush since school and didn’t think she could do it. We always say, just make a mark. Even with your non-dominant hand. That first mark is the hardest, but once it’s made, the rest flows.”</p><p>Creativity is a muscle that needs to be flexed, said Mullah.</p><p>“There’s art in everything. Even doing your books can be artful, if not quite creative accounting,” she laughed. </p><p>“What matters is doing it your way and enjoying it. That’s what we’re about.”</p>The joy of creating<p>Her objective, Mullah said, is not to have people produce perfect art but to reconnect with the joy of creating. </p><p>“So many people walk out saying they forgot how good it feels,” she said. “They start painting at home again or doodling in meetings, not because the meeting is boring but because their mind, their creative spirit, is opening up.”</p><p>Pricing ranges from R180 to around R2 000, depending on the medium, size, and time spent. It’s a reasonably affordable pastime, considering a cinema visit for a family of four can already cost close to a grand. </p><p>The studio also offers something tangible to take home: your own creativity. </p><p>“You can hang your art on the wall or carry it with you on a tote. Nobody else has that item. Additional R254 million has been allocated to the protection of energy infrastructure.Through the ” Siyakhuculula Manje and Clean Kasi ” programme, a total of R226 million has been allocated to environmental resources, waste management repairs, maintenance materials and supplies to support internal capacity to cut grass, maintain cemeteries, remove weeds, prune trees, and maintain landfill sites, wetlands, lakes, and dams.A total of R946 million has been allocated for roads and transport management, with road rehabilitation and pothole patching done under the auspices of the Hlasela Amapotholes project.A total of R41.3 million will be used for repairing and maintaining traffic signals.While more funds are still required, R54 million will go towards addressing sinkholes.Capital expenditure has been allocated R3.1 billion.An employee budget will be R13.4 billion – towards annual salary increments and the recruitment of additional workforce.<p>Dlabathi said the budget will implement the recruitment of 700 permanent cleaners and 290 permanent EMPD (Ekurhuleni Municipal Police Department) officers to maintain strategic offices and buildings.</p><p>“A budget of R303 million will be allocated over the medium-term to equip the staff with essential tools of trade necessary to optimise performance. 3163027	有图 <p> Thursday’s repo rate cut is unlikely to bring much relief to cash-strapped consumers, as any savings will be offset by the rising fuel levy eating into their income. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Repo-rate-cut-consumers.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Although the Reserve Bank’s decision to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points on Thursday is good news for economists, it will not shield South Africans from the burden of the fuel and sin tax levies introduced by Budget 3.0.</p><p>Neil Roets, CEO of Debt Rescue, warns that increased taxing of the workforce is not the answer and will put further financial strain on households, driving them to new depths of despair at a time when they are buckling under the weight of multiple unsustainable inflation-related living costs.</p><p>“The reality is that the finance minister’s decision to impose new tax measures will hurt lower-income families most, as they will bear a proportionally higher burden, forcing them to make impossible lifestyle choices with the little disposable income they have left.”</p><p>Before the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) governor, Lesetja Kganyago, announced the repo rate cut this afternoon, economists polled by Reuters accurately predicted that the Bank would restart its repo rate cutting cycle this month, trimming the repo rate by 25 basis points to bring down the interest rate to 7.25% as the latest inflation data strengthens the case for monetary easing.</p><p>ALSO READ: Reserve Bank cuts repo rate thanks to lower inflation, stronger rand</p>Repo rate cut too small to matter for consumers<p>“While any cut in the repo rate benefits consumers, the change is simply not big enough to make any real difference in their lives, or to encourage growth in the economy. The impact on consumers will be minimal, as the 25 basis points cut will mean a tiny saving of R254 per month on a R1.5 million home loan and around R65 on a R500 000 car loan.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Ultimately, a growing economy is the only solution that will slowly lift the weight of unsustainably high living costs from the shoulders of South Africans,” Roets says.</p><p>Inflation currently remains outside the Sarb’s target range of 3% to 6%, with the most recent data showing that consumer inflation was 2.8% in April, just slightly above March’s 2.7%. However, Roets points out, inflation on food and non-alcoholic beverages was 4.0%, the highest it has been since September 2024.</p><p>“Overall, inflation is still considered low, which would have been a strong incentive to cut the current repo rate. The exchange rate of the rand also remains a key factor in economic stability and would have influenced the MPC’s decision.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Reserve Bank could cut repo rate on Thursday, but will it decide to?</p><p> </p>Move to lower inflation target will affect repo rate<p>Kganyago is a longstanding advocate of shifting to a lower inflation target, arguing this would ensure South Africa is better placed to compete with its trading partners. He said earlier that a single-point target of 3% would be in line with South Africa’s peers and lead to lower interest rates in the long term.</p><p>However, his critics worry that reaching a lower inflation target will require tighter monetary policy that will impede growth and employment in a country with one of the highest jobless and poverty rates in the world.</p><p>On Thursday, Kganyago reiterated his view, saying that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) believes that the 3% scenario is more attractive than the 4.5% baseline and would like to see inflation expectations move lower, towards the bottom end of their target range. He also said the MPC will consider scenarios with a 3% objective at future meetings.</p><p>However, Annabel Bishop, chief economist at Investec, warns that a lower inflation target risks scuppering further interest rate cuts this year too. “With a change to the inflation target reportedly occurring soon this year, the Sarb has chosen to cut interest rates this month to avoid the limitation of doing so in the future but then could easily be at risk of needing to reverse the cut.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Salaries decreased by 2% in April, but higher than a year ago</p>Slow pace of repo rate cuts perpetuates debt trap<p>Roets says the reality is that the slow pace of the country’s repo rate reductions is perpetuating the debt trap that millions of ordinary South Africans find themselves in, leaving millions with no option but to survive on credit.</p><p>“This scenario has been escalating since the prolonged tightening cycle began towards the end of 2021, when the MPC raised the repo rate by a cumulative 4.75% between November 2021 and May 2023, taking it from 3.50% to 8.25%, the highest level since 2014. “</p><p>Against this backdrop, the latest Statistics SA General Household Survey, released on Tuesday this week, reveals shocking statistics about hunger in the country. According to the survey results, almost a quarter of South African households did not have enough food to eat last year.</p><p> </p><p>This means that around 14 million people out of South Africa’s population of 63 million went hungry. Of those polled, 22.2% of households considered access to food inadequate or severely inadequate.</p><p>“South Africans need real financial relief. This is a glaring red flag that should be at the top of the list of concerns for government. Sadly, this means more and more South Africans are relying on their credit and store cards to put food on the table and keep the lights on.</p><p>“The likelihood is that they will default on debt and fall into an even deeper trap, as the cost of credit increases due to existing debt. Image: Nissan</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>With speculation continuing to grow about Nissan’s alleged closing of its Rosslyn plant outside Pretoria, the automaker has indicated that two of its three products bound for India have entered pre-production ahead of their market reveals next year.</p>Nissan by Renault<p>Teased back in March as part of its restructuring process that saw Ivan Espinosa replace Makoto Uchida as CEO, the initial pair of models consists of a Nissan-badged version of the Renault Triber and a restyled take on the new Duster.</p><p>Not shown in the mentioned images, the incoming third model will use the Dacia Bigster as a base and could replace the X-Trail as a more affordable option in select developing markets.</p><p>ALSO READ: Reports claim Rosslyn to be one of Nissan’s plants facing closure</p><p>A facility that had been one of Nissan’s biggest outside Japan and even North America, the plant currently produces the Kiger and Triber, as well as the Magnite for 65 markets in both right-and left-hand-drive.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> PODCAST: What closure of Nissan Rosslyn plant means for Mzansi </p> </p> </p><p>In addition, it will soon produce the Duster currently made in Romania and Turkey, and by extension, the mentioned Nissan model. </p><p> </p><p> </p>Plans for India<p>Addressing Nissan’s supposed market exit, Vatsa told Autocar India, “I am also happy to say that all our product plans are on track and well underway and, in fact, pre-production of our upcomingB-MPVandC-SUVhas already begun at the Renault plant in Chennai.</p><p>“Reports of our exit are all untrue, and there is no reason for us to exit. As you can see from our continued development of the Magnite and the new products planned, we are not pulling back from anything”.</p><p><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/250326-01_India-Nissan-Range-Teaser-MPV-source.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"><sub>Nissan-badged version of the Renault Triber will go on-sale in India next year. Image: Nissan</sub></p><p>Confirming the Triber-based model as debuting in the first quarter of next year, Vatsa stated that the Duster underpinned model, which could revive the Terrano name used on a rebadged version of the original, would make its unveiling in mid-2026 and go on-sale soon after.</p><p>Although sold exclusively with five-seats in Europe, Vatsa remarked that the Bigster-derived Nissan, which will also become Chennai-assembled Renault, will be engineered from the start to have seven-seats as opposed to being a “5+2” model.</p><p> </p><p>Accordingly, this model will debut in 2027, suggesting the Renault version as either becoming a reality in late 2026 or early the next year ahead of the Nissan.</p>Made in India for South Africa<p>More significantly, both SUVs have received approval for South Africa, the former set to replace the Qashqai that quietly departed the local market last year.</p><p>“[These] products will be Nissan’s answer to the Chinese competition in South Africa. We believe [India] is a good source to bring competitive and technologically advanced response to the market,” Nissan Managing Director for South Africa and Independent African Markets, Maciej Klenkiewicz, told the media at theunveiling of the facelift Magnite in Cape Town last year.</p><p><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/D.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"><sub>Dacia Bigster will become a Renault once production kicks-off in India. However, a bumpy ride is still ahead.</p><p>Business Rescue Practitioner (BRP), Anoosh Rooplal and Juanito Damons told the parliament’s Communications and Digital Technologies committee that they are 75% done with the handover process to the shareholders of Sapo on Wednesday.</p><p>However, they need to devise a plan to address outstanding creditors.</p><p>ALSO READ: More millions to save jobs at SA Post Office</p>Post office debt<p>The committee was told that the Post Office was unable to receive R3.8 billion. Therefore, they are still in discussions with the department regarding an alternative plan to settle outstanding creditors.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Business rescue for stricken chicken producer Daybreak Foods </p> </p> </p><p>The creditors that still need to be paid are the South African Revenue Services (Sars), the Pension Fund, and Medipos. The three need to be paid a collective of R509 million.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>For the financial year 2024-25, the practitioners were able to pay creditors a total of R1 billion.</p>Post office successes<p>The committee was informed that, for the first time since 2012, Sapo had a positive balance sheet with a net asset value (NAV) of R1 billion.</p><p>Sapo was placed under provisional liquidation in 2023, but thanks to the work of Rooplal and Damons, the entity has been discharged.</p><p>“The BRPs applied to have the provisional liquidation order discharged. The matter was heard on 22 November 2024, and the provisional liquidation order was discharged.”</p><p> </p><p>The entity is currently paying its liabilities in the ordinary course of business.</p><p>ALSO READ: Ramaphosa signs Post Office Bill into law</p>Retrenchments<p>The practitioners stated that they issued 4875 termination letters for employees who were affected by the retrenchment. “All affected employees’ notice period ended on 30 April 2024, and 4 342 employees were retrenched.”</p><p>Sapo reported that year-on-year expenses of R2.7 billion were reduced by R2 billion, with staff costs being the main contributor to this decrease. As of 31 March 2025, Sapo had 5592 employees.</p><p> </p><p>Additionally, the entity reduced the number of operating branches to 657.</p>Sapo receives money<p>The entity received R150 million from the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies in March 2025.</p><p>When it comes to revenue, the entity reported year-on-year revenue of R1.7 billion, a decline of R700 million. But after inflation for April was still below 3%, they started to wonder if a cut could indeed happen.</p><p>Tertia Jacobs, treasury economist and fixed income specialist at Investec, says the surprise was not the 25 basis points cut, but the fact that the governor of the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb), Lesetja Kganyago, was in favour of a 50 basis point rate cut.</p><p>“We would have concurred with the 50-basis point rate cut because we see that the Sarb is behind in the rate cutting cycle. It was interesting that there was a lot of time spent on discussing a lower inflation target. The Sarb really pushed hard for the lower target, but the governor said they need the buy-in from Treasury.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Reserve Bank cuts repo rate thanks to lower inflation, stronger rand</p>Unanimous decision to cut repo rate<p>Jee-A van der Linde, senior economist at Oxford Economics Africa, points out that five members of the MPC voted for a 25 basis points cut, while one member preferred a larger cut of 50.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Weekly economic wrap: Rand strongest since December, but falling again </p> </p> </p><p>“Although our subjective odds shifted in favour of a 25 basis points cut, our forecast for this meeting indicated an unchanged policy rate, with voting patterns remaining tight due to the exceptionally uncertain external environment.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>He says the latest repo rate cut suggests that the Sarb is comfortable with South Africa’s inflation outlook, including potential upside risks to prices. “Looking ahead, we forecast headline inflation will consistently average above 3% from the second half of 2025, trending gradually higher over the near term.</p><p>“This suggests that monetary authorities will have their work cut out for them if they want inflation expectations to decrease from current levels (4.3% in 2025 and 4.6% in 2026) to 3%. The Sarb said it will consider scenarios with a 3% objective at future MPC meetings.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Repo rate cut offers no shelter from Budget 3.0 fallout for consumers</p>It was the right decision – economist<p>Prof Raymond Parsons, economist at the NWU Business School, says he believes the MPC decision to resume its interest rate-easing cycle by reducing rates by another 25 basis points is the right one. “It is a welcome recognition of the changed economic circumstances which have made this possible.</p><p> </p><p>“The majority view of the MPC therefore recognised the other factors which made it both desirable and practical to further cut borrowing costs for business and consumers at this key juncture in South Africa’s business cycle.</p><p>“At this stage even a small reduction in interest rates can have a big positive impact on the national economic mood and on confidence levels. Although it is recognised that monetary policy cannot do the heavy lifting in South Africa’s growth performance, lower borrowing costs are nevertheless supportive of the country’s incipient but weak economic recovery.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Reserve Bank could cut repo rate on Thursday, but will it decide to?</p>More positive inflation outlook can bring more repo rate cuts<p>Harry Kellan, CEO of FNB, says the repo rate cut comes at a time when there is a more positive inflation outlook for the rest of the year, along with growing urgency to boost economic activity. He expects that the repo rate will be reduced once more this year.</p><p> </p><p>“Interest rates and inflation must be viewed in a wider context. We saw a sharp decline in the FNB/BER consumer sentiment measure in the first quarter of 2025, driven largely by indications of a potential VAT hike which has been removed.</p><p>“While the VAT hike uncertainty has been resolved, the recent approved budget does continue to reflect continued fiscal pressures. Consumer sentiment is also impacted by the lower-than-expected inflation increases in house prices as noted in the FNB Property Barometer.”</p><p>Mamello Matikinca-Ngwenya, chief economist at FNB, says the MPC’s decision to cut the repo rate highlights a greater focus on domestic fundamentals. “The outlook on interest rates will continue to reflect the risks. Should muted local inflation and expectations that the US Fed will resume its cutting cycle before year-end prevail, our current view that another 25 basis points cut is probable this year would be supported.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Repo rate: Will Reserve Bank cut or err on side of caution?</p><p> </p>Low inflation and recovery in exchange rate to thank for repo rate cut<p>Angelika Goliger, chief economist at EY Africa, says the decision to cut the repo rate was influenced by several factors, including South Africa’s low inflation, a recovery in the exchange rate and declining fuel prices.</p><p>“Globally, the US Federal Reserve remains cautious due to uncertainties around government policies and their net effect on the economy, with only two rate cuts expected this year, starting in September.</p><p>“However, the outlook for US inflation has improved following yesterday’s US Court for International Trade ruling that the reciprocal tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by the Trump Administration are unlawful and subject to removal. Picture: Gallo Images/Darren Stewart</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Rudzani Maphwanya, says the ongoing withdrawal of troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is at a critical stage.</p><p>The phased withdrawal began on 29 April, following discussions between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC).</p><p>ALSO READ: ‘We’re in serious trouble’: SANDF crisis deepens as leaders clash over its future</p><p>The process follows a tragic loss of 14 SANDF members during clashes between the DRC military and the M23 rebel group in eastern DRC. </p><p>The troops’ withdrawal is expected to be completed by the end of May.</p><p>While military personnel will be flown home, the equipment will need to be transported by sea.</p><p> </p><p> </p>SANDF chief pays tribute to fallen soldiers<p>Delivering the keynote address during the United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers International Day commemoration in Bloemfontein on Thursday, Maphwanya reflected on the cost of peacekeeping missions.</p><p>The SANDF chief highlighted that achieving peace comes at a high price, with casualties and setbacks.</p><p>He noted that more than 4 000 peacekeepers have died while serving under the UN flag.</p><p>“Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Peacekeepers play a vital role in conflict zones, maintaining ceasefires, protecting vulnerable populations, and supporting the rebuilding of societies ravaged by war,” he said.</p><p> </p><p>READ MORE: What is taking so long? Why SANDF troops can’t get a lift home</p><p>Maphwanya honoured the 14 SANDF soldiers who lost their lives in the DRC, saying their “sacrifice was not in vain”.</p><p>“Their toil, their blood, is the tree we see today, a tree bearing the nascent fruits of peace and stability in that nation. </p><p>“However, we are not under any illusion that our work is complete. We recognise that we are still a long way from achieving our ultimate goal of lasting peace and stability.”</p><p> </p><p>He reaffirmed the SANDF’s commitment to peacekeeping efforts, stating that South Africa remains ready to support future missions in the DRC.</p><p>“SADC, along with other international entities, will continue to seek peaceful resolutions in the Central African nation.”</p>SANDF withdrawal from DRC progressing<p>Maphwanya also made it clear that the SANDF’s departure should not be seen as abandoning the people of the DRC.</p><p>“As directed by our government, we remain prepared to support future peacekeeping missions in the DRC and elsewhere, whenever and wherever our expertise and dedication are required.”</p><p> </p><p>He further highlighted the logistical complexity of the withdrawal process.</p><p>“We are working around the clock with the SADC secretariat to ensure that we get all our people and equipment back from the eastern DRC. We are at a critical stage of the withdrawal of the contingent’s equipment.”</p><p>READ MORE: Concerns raised about ‘disorganised’ withdrawal of SA troops from DRC</p><p>In addition, Maphwanya reiterated that the SANDF’s objective remains to foster peace and stability through mediation and political engagement.</p><p> </p><p>“War and peace are not opposites, but rather two sides of the same coin.
