Picture: Gallo Images/City Press/Tebogo Letsie</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has once again been postponed, following a request by the defence for additional information from the state.</p><p>The trial resumed on Tuesday in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, but was adjourned until next week.</p><p>The delay comes as the defence seeks access to automatic vehicle locator (AVL) data linked to the cars used in the arrests of the accused.</p><p>AVL technology shows real-time information about a vehicle’s status, including whether it is switched on or off, in motion or stationary, its speed, location, and date.</p><p>Earlier in the trial, the defence contended that police made multiple stops on different days during which accused one, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, and accused two, Bongani Ntanzi, were allegedly assaulted and coerced into confessing to their involvement in Meyiwa’s murder.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Big development in search for Olorato Mongale’s killers </p> </p> </p>Senzo Meyiwa murder trial delayed<p>During Tuesday’s court proceedings, state prosecutor George Baloyi requested a postponement until next Monday, citing the need for more time to obtain AVL records for several vehicles.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“The challenge is in obtaining the information from the service provider,” Baloyi told Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng.</p><p>He explained that accessing the AVL records would require Section 205 applications.</p><p>Section 205 of the Criminal Procedure Act allows investigators the right to access information which is not in the public domain.</p><p>“The date of Monday was arranged, keeping in mind that there are these processes that must be followed.</p><p> </p><p>“It’s not just a question of calling the service provider to request the AVL. Picture: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile via Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Sharks captain Eben Etzebeth said his side cannot draw on their significant win over Munster in the United Rugby Championship earlier this season – which resulted in the resignation of their coach three days afterwards – as playing any role when the teams clash in the quarter-finals.</p><p>The Sharks crushed Munster 41–24 in Durban in October. It was the Irish side’s third consecutive defeat, and with the team languishing at 12th on the log after six games, Graham Rowntree resigned as head coach.</p><p>Munster recovered under interim coach Ian Costello and will face the Sharks again at Kings Park on Saturday (kick-off 6.30pm) in a last-eight clash.</p><p>This is the Sharks’ first-ever home quarter-final in the URC, though they have never progressed past this play-off phase. Munster, on the other hand, have won the URC in its current format once and three times in its previous formats.</p>Munster are strong away from home<p>Two years ago, they won all three of their knockout games away from home (Glasgow, Leinster and Stormers). But we know Munster.</p><p>“They’ve got a history of playing well in knockout games. We are very aware of that, that they can be their best even away from home. They are a quality side and we definitely won’t look too much into the past and the past result, where we came out on top.</p><p>“Just a weekend is a long time and that was more than half a year ago. That won’t count at all.”</p>Sharks look to home crowd advantage against Munster<p>The Sharks captain said his side have had“one of our best URCs yet”. </p><p> </p><p>Despite battling an injury dilemma for much of the season, the Sharks pulled off enough tight wins (eight victories were by seven points or fewer) to finish third on the log.</p><p>“It’s a good opportunity for us to hopefully push a bit further in this competition. 3159465	有图 <p> South Africa has come a long way to ensure more households have water and electricity, but many still do not have enough to eat. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/South-African-households.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Statistics for last year show that almost a quarter of South African households did not have enough food to eat last year. This means that about 14 million people out of the 63 million people in South Africa went to bed hungry.</p><p>According to the General Household Survey for 2024 issued by Statistics SA on Tuesday, 22.2% of households considered their access to food inadequate or severely inadequate, with the worst food access problems in the Northern Cape (34.3%), Eastern Cape (31.3%), Mpumalanga (30.4%) and KwaZulu-Natal (23.9%).</p><p>Going to sleep hungry is not the only problem that many South Africans have. More people also became reliant on government funding as the proportion of individuals receiving social grants increased from 12.8% in 2003 to 30.9% in 2019 and surged to 40.1% in 2024 due to the introduction of the special Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant.</p><p>ALSO READ: Stats SA survey: At least 42% of South African households headed by women</p>42.2% of households headed by women<p>Almost half of the households in South Africa are headed by women, at 42.4%. In the rural areas, this number is even higher at 47.1%, particularly in the Eastern Cape (48.8%) and KwaZulu-Natal (46.8%). Households headed by women were the least common in Gauteng (37.3%).</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> How much your geyser really costs you and what to do about it this winter </p> </p> </p><p>The report shows that more than a quarter (26.9%) of households consisted of a single person, while 39.4% were nuclear households of parents and children. Skip generation households, where grandparents lived with grandchildren, made up 4.2% of all households, and these were most common in the Eastern Cape (7.7%) and Limpopo (6.9%).</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Only 3 in 10 poor children are developmentally on track, says minister</p>Only 31.4% of children live with both parents in households<p>Less than a third (31.4%) of children lived with both parents, while 45.5% lived with their mothers only and 11.7% were orphaned, having lost one or both parents. Almost 18.8% of South African children lived with neither of their biological parents.</p><p>Only about three out of twenty South Africans had access to a medical aid scheme in 2024, with coverage decreasing slightly from 15.9% in 2002 to 15.5% in 2024. The highest coverage rates were in the Western Cape (25.4%) and Gauteng (21.3%), while the lowest were in Limpopo (10.0%) and KwaZulu-Natal (10.2%).</p><p>ALSO READ: Gauteng’s bubbling housing crisis</p><p> </p>People living in formal dwellings increased by more than 10% in 22 years<p>The survey shows that the percentage of households living in formal dwellings increased from 73.5% in 2002 to 84.1% in 2024. Nationally, 60.1% owned the dwelling they lived in, while 25.1% rented their dwellings.</p><p>Between 2002 and 2024, the percentage of households with access to piped or tap water in their dwellings, off-site or on-site, increased by 3.3 percentage points to 87.7%. Those with access to piped water in their dwellings increased from 40.4% to 46.4%.</p><p>The percentage of households with access to municipal water increased from 78.4% in 2004 to 79.8% in 2024, an increase of 6.3 million.</p><p>Access to improved sanitation with flush toilets or pit toilets with ventilation pipes increased from 61.7% in 2002 to 83.1% in 2024. The largest increases were observed in the Eastern Cape (56.5 percentage points), Limpopo (35.3 percentage points) and KwaZulu-Natal (26.9 percentage points).</p><p> </p><p>Approximately 66.7% of households used flush toilets (up from 57.3% in 2002), while 16.3% used pit toilets with ventilation pipes (up from 4.4% in 2002). Less than 1% of households did not have access to any form of sanitation, and while 46.2% of toilet facilities were located in the dwelling, 49.9% were located in the yard.</p><p>ALSO READ: Johannesburg’s 2025/26 tariff increases — Here is how much more you could pay</p>Access to electricity also increased for households<p>Access to mains electricity also increased notably since 2002, according to the report, increasing from 76.7% to 90.2%.</p><p>Statistics SA says improved access to electricity had major implications for households. The percentage of households that used electricity as the main source of energy for cooking increased from 57.5% to 77.3%, while households that used paraffin decreased to 2.2% from 16.1%, and households that used wood or coal decreased from 23.0% to 8.0%. Gas users increased from 2.2% to 7.2%.</p><p> </p><p>Access to electricity also enabled wider use of household electrical appliances. Almost 88.3% of households owned an electrical stove (up from 78.7% in 2012), while 80.9% of households owned a fridge (up from 70.1% in 2012). About 59.3% of households owned a microwave oven.</p><p>In addition, the report shows that 35.9% of households experienced load shedding or power interruptions during the week before they were interviewed. Households used a variety of alternative energy sources for cooking.</p><p>Nationally, 28.2% used LPG/gas and 25.2% used open fires using a variety of materials such as wood, coal and charcoal. The use of gas was most common in the Western Cape (46.6%) and Gauteng (36.9%). Statistics SA says this increase is reflected in the fact that household ownership of gas stoves and plates increased from 19% in 2022 to 30.4% in 2024.</p><p>ALSO READ: Connectivity and internet facing much-needed change and growth in SA</p><p> </p>Fewer people own radios, but more own TV sets<p>Findings from the report also revealed a decline in traditional radio ownership due to access to alternative media like TV and the internet. The percentage of households that owned a radio decreased from 79.8% in 2002 to 31.3% in 2024, while household ownership of television sets increased from 57.4% in 2002 to 77.5% in 2024. Pay TV subscriptions increased from 29.2% in 2012 to 58.6% in 2024.</p><p>Although the percentage of households without physical mail services increased from 9.0% in 2002 to 62.6% in 2024, South African households have actually become more connected since 2002, Statistics SA says.</p><p>While the percentage of households that used landlines decreased from 25.5% in 2002 to 3.4% in 2024, access to mobile phones exploded and 96.1% owned at least one mobile phone in 2024.</p><p>The percentage of households with access to the Internet through any other means increased from 28.0% in 2010 to 82.1% by 2024. Picture: Nigel Sibanda.The Citizen</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>From container classrooms with broken doors and windows to snakes and only five, not fully functional, toilets standing outside.</p><p>Parents of learners at the Durban Deep Primary School in Johannesburg have raised concerns over the state of the school. </p><p>They toldThe Citizenthat the government has been promising to build a proper school for several years, but has still not fulfilled its promise.</p><p>“Instead of building the school, they keep bringing more containers, and the children break these things easily. This has left parents anxious about whether their child could be bitten.</p><p>“Not long ago, we killed a python here. Yes, it didn’t bite our kids but who’s to say it won’t next time.</p><p>“These classrooms with no doors will not protect our children from those snakes,” said the father of one of the schoolchildren.</p><p>ALSO READ: Dismay at Durban Deep Primary</p><p> </p>Concerns falling on deaf ears<p>The school governing body refused to give comment to The Citizen, while the Gauteng education department had not responded by the time of publishing. Their comment will be included once received.</p><p>The community is planning a protest at the school to raise awareness of their struggles, but they believe politicians will only listen when they want their support.</p><p>“Voting time is coming, and these politicians are going to come here and give us empty promises again. They only give us attention when they want votes, but they never help,” said one parent.</p><p>“We have been appearing on the news fighting for this. This ultimately resulted in Maotwe’s removal.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: WATCH: ‘Dim the lights’ — Ramaphosa pokes fun at Trump meeting</p><p>Ramaphosa eventually addressed the question, stating that the primary aim of his trip was to restore the deteriorating relationship between South Africa and the US.</p><p>He emphasised the significance of both countries in each other’s economies and their political relations.</p><p>The president said the visit aimed to reset the relationship, as the adverse impact on South Africa’s economy was significant, particularly for the agricultural, automotive, steel, aluminium, and mining sectors.</p><p> </p>Ramaphosa defends US trip objectives<p>Ramaphosa added that the second objective was to establish a process of engagement between the US and South Africa on issues such as tariffs, investments and related matters.</p><p>He said the third objective was to discuss the G20 and the importance of the United States’ engagement with the G20.</p><p>“We believe that we achieved those objectives,” Ramaphosa said. It was necessary and important for us to go and engage with them because many of our people’s jobs are dependent on our economic dealings with the US,” Ramaphosa said.</p><p>Regarding shielding South Africans from the high cost of living, the president acknowledged the issue of high living costs in South Africa and emphasised the government’s concern.</p>Govt concerned about cost of living – president<p>The president said macroeconomic policies, including an inflation target, have helped keep prices low and stable, reducing average prices.</p><p> </p><p>He added that the government has increased social grants and provides free basic services, including water and electricity.</p><p>Ramaphosa urged municipalities to ensure these services reach those in need effectively.</p><p>ALSO READ: Trump changes tune and ‘agrees’ to participate in G20 Summit, Ramaphosa says</p><p>“It is therefore essential that municipalities ensure that this support reaches all the households that need it. I keep on urging municipalities to revamp their indigent registers,” he said.</p><p> </p><p>The president stated that many municipalities, including Johannesburg, have not been updating their indigent registers, resulting in the misuse of allocations.</p><p>He also discussed ongoing efforts to address structural factors, including the impact of apartheid spatial planning and reforming housing policies to provide affordable housing closer to economic centres.</p>EFF complain about being removed<p>Amid the president’s answering of questions, numerous EFF members, including EFF leader Julius Malema, were removed from the chamber or the virtual platform for raising points of order.</p><p>The EFF raised points of order on the manner in which Ramaphosa responded to questions. 3159459	有图 <p> The Rand Water CEO explained that a substantial component of the annual maintenance investment goes toward reservoir inspections. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/rand-water-shortages-consumption.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Rand Water spends close to R400 million annually on repairs and maintenance, the utility’s Group Chief Executive Sipho Mosai revealed on Tuesday as the company prepares to launch its most extensive winter maintenance programme affecting water supply across Gauteng.</p><p>The substantial investment in infrastructure upkeep comes as Gauteng residents brace for water disruptions lasting up to 107 hours, beginning Thursday. </p><p>Mosai’s disclosure of the annual maintenance budget provides new insight into the scale of investment required to maintain the province’s ageing water infrastructure amid persistent supply challenges.</p><p>The maintenance programme begins at a time when many Gauteng areas are already experiencing days without water, with some communities having no access to water at all.</p>Rand Water’s strategic deployment of maintenance budget<p>Mosai explained how the utility strategically deploys its significant annual maintenance investment throughout the year, with major infrastructure work concentrated during low-demand periods to minimise consumer impact.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> 21-day water outage in Joburg set to begin Friday </p> </p> </p><p>“We conduct our maintenance periodically. But periodically we mean throughout the year, both the financial and the calendar year. We spend close to R400 million per annum as Rand Water on a yearly basis on repairs and maintenance,” Mosai said.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The CEO outlined how this substantial budget is strategically utilised during specific periods when water consumption naturally decreases, allowing for comprehensive infrastructure work while reducing disruption to consumers.</p><p>“What we do is that we conduct our major maintenance through what we call low-demand periods. The first low demand period is the winter months. Generally, the water consumption or usage drops in winter for a number of reasons,” he stated.</p><p>ALSO READ: Gauteng residents warned to brace for major water disruptions this week</p>Winter timing maximises value of maintenance investment<p>Mosai detailed how seasonal consumption patterns allow Rand Water to maximise the value of its R400 million annual investment by scheduling major work when demand is lowest.</p><p> </p><p>“The first is obviously households shy away from topping their swimming pools. Secondly, we mostly see that consumers use water for their lawns and taps. [However, during] this period of time, kikuyu grass, the main one that is used in South Africa, becomes dominant; as a result, in the period of May, June, July, and leading all the way to August, the demand drops,” Mosai explained.</p><p>This strategic timing ensures the utility can conduct extensive infrastructure work while minimising the impact on already water-stressed communities, making the substantial maintenance investment more effective.</p>Regulatory compliance drives maintenance spending<p>The CEO revealed that a significant portion of the annual R400 million budget is driven by mandatory compliance with various safety and operational regulations governing water infrastructure.</p><p>“The first one is the operational health and safety act and its regulations that determine our main tenants’ requirements to go and ensure that our infrastructure is compliant with health and safety regulations. But of course, because we’re dealing with mechanical and electrical infrastructure, there are regulations that speak to that,” Mosai said.</p><p> </p>Major budget allocation for reservoir safety<p>Mosai explained that a substantial component of the annual maintenance investment goes toward reservoir inspections, which are classified under stringent dam safety regulations requiring comprehensive structural assessments.</p><p>“And most importantly for our reservoirs. Our reservoirs, reservoirs essentially are water storage or clean water storage tanks. They are classified as dams. 3159458	有图 <p> Liberty announced its claims statistics for 2024 today, showing it paid out more than R12 billion in 2024 for 120 000 insured lives. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Liberty-claims-statistics.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Liberty Corporate Benefits received 62 000 applications from clients to withdraw funds from their saving pots under the two-pot retirement system in 2024.</p><p>The financial services company says it paid out R600 million to 48 600 of clients who were ultimately approved, after R155.6 million was deducted for tax purposes.</p><p>Overall, the majority of claims came from Liberty’s Lifestyle Protector cover which paid out R7.35 billion to 28 889 individuals and their beneficiaries, with an average payment of R260 000 to each person or their families who claimed during the year.</p><p>Liberty Corporate Benefit’s claims payouts for 2024 amounted to R2.6 billion, paid to 11 198 individuals. Claims from Liberty’s funeral products and credit life products (partly sold through Standard Bank) made up the remainder of the total claim payouts, amounting to R1.99 billion.</p><p>Mark Barberini, head of comprehensive life solutions at Liberty, says their personal risk claim payouts show an increase of 11.8% from 2023.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Land dispute in Mpumalanga as claimants clash over farm ownership </p> </p> </p><p>Life cover dominates claims in 2024, with increases in claims across all four key pillars of the business last under Liberty’s Lifestyle Protector suite. Life Protection payouts increased by 9.5% to R5.5 billion, Lifestyle Protection increased by 20.4% to R1.2 billion, Income Protection lump sum payouts increased by 18.5% to R507 million and monthly income protection payouts were up 11.6% to R267.3 million.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: How to ensure that your future life insurance claim is paid out</p>Liberty claims show people live longer with critical illnesses<p>While life claims made up the bulk of payments, the dramatic increase in claims from Lifestyle Protection benefits demonstrates that people are living longer with critical illnesses. One reason is that they receive treatment more promptly based on earlier detection, which highlights an increased need for living benefits and more regular preventative medical screenings.</p><p>“Insights like these point to a need for more comprehensive lifestyle protection cover, as death and unexpected medical diagnoses are not the only risks that can have a significant effect on your family and lifestyle. Unexpected life events, such as retrenchment, can also have a serious impact,” Andrew Methmann, Liberty’s chief specialist for risk pricing, says.</p><p>As expected, the majority of claims were from older clients, with the average age at claim being 60 for women and 64 for men. However, 25% of claims were from male clients under 55 and 35% for female clients under 55.</p><p> </p><p>“With 2.2% of claims coming from individuals under the age of 35, it is evident that death, disability and critical illness can affect anyone, regardless of age and happen unexpectedly. It is important to encourage younger people to take out cover while they are still young and also in better health, potentially making their risk cover cheaper,” Methmann says.</p><p>ALSO READ: Why trust is so important when it comes to life insurance</p>More men claimed from Liberty than women<p>In 2024 Liberty saw a much higher proportion of overall claims coming from men (64.8%) than from women (35.2%). While Liberty’s client base is split almost equally between men and women, one of the reasons for this gap could be the fact that a larger proportion of these men are older and more likely to claim.</p><p>The top causes of claims were cancer (31.2%), cardiovascular disorders (22.3%), respiratory disorders (5.8%), musculoskeletal disorders (5.5%) and nervous system disorders (5.3%), accounting for 70.2% of all claims among all benefits. While cancer was the leading cause for claims among men and women, 37.2% of women claimants claimed for cancer, compared to 27.9% for men.</p><p> </p><p>Dr Reinhardt Erasmus, Liberty’s chief medical officer, says the higher prevalence of cancer among women can possibly be attributed to the high incidence of breast cancer.</p><p>“Notably, 46.9% of cancer-related claims submitted by women were for this specific form of the disease. For men, the most common cancer was prostate cancer, accounting for 31.9% of male cancer claims.”</p><p>ALSO READ: It pays to be honest with your life insurer</p>Income protection claims mainly due to musculoskeletal disorders<p>The number one reason for income protection claims were musculoskeletal disorders at 22.7%, followed by cancer at 16% and retrenchment at 9.9%. Kresantha Pillay, chief specialist for Liberty’s Lifestyle Protector cover, says although retrenchment claims have come down from 2023 to 2024, the need for adequate income protection cannot be emphasized enough.</p><p> </p><p>“In 2024, most retrenchment claims occurred in the 35 to 44 age band, with 38.6% from women and 16.8% from men. Overall, 64.4 % of retrenchment claims were from women, while 35.6% were from men.</p><p>“This reveals a stark contrast in retrenchment claim trends and shows that in 2024, women filed nearly twice as many retrenchment claims as men. This signals a troubling imbalance in job security and underscores the critical need for income protection among women, highlighting the urgency for them to explore tailored financial solutions and safeguards.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Think twice before switching your life insurance</p>Claims for serious mental disorders and suicide<p>Claims for serious mental disorders made up 2.8% of all retail claims in 2024. Of this percentage, 51.1% of these claims were for life protection benefits with the remainder for living benefits. The tragedy of suicide accounted for the majority of these life protection claims.</p><p> </p><p>Payments for income protection claims increased by 4% to R927 million. Labour-intensive manufacturing, distribution and wholesale industries accounted for 22% of total claims, largely due to a higher frequency of injuries.</p><p>“Most of these injuries related to the musculoskeletal system. This experience extended into the lump sum disability benefit where musculoskeletal related claims contributed to the 70% increase in total claims paid, bringing the amount to R142 million,” Mangaliso Nxasana, actuarial manager at Liberty Corporate Benefits, says.</p><p>At least 18% of income protection claims came from the financial, professional and support services sector. Picture: IPSS Medical Rescue. </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The driver of a bus that plunged more than 50 metres from a bridge near Tongaat, killing three people and injuring twelve others, is alive and being monitored by police in hospital as authorities investigate potential criminal charges including murder.</p><p>Speaking to the media at the scene, KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma revealed that the driver survived Tuesday morning’s devastating crash on the R102 near Maidstone Sugar Mill and is receiving medical treatment while under police supervision. </p><p>The bus was fully loaded with passengers when it careened off the Maidstone Road bridge in what preliminary investigations suggest may have been caused by brake failure.</p>Criminal charges being considered<p>Duma indicated that authorities are exploring serious criminal charges against the driver, moving beyond typical culpable homicide charges to potentially more severe penalties. </p><p>The MEC explained the legal framework governing such cases during a media briefing at the crash site.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Three killed, 12 injured after bus plunges off 50m KZN bridge </p> </p> </p><p>“Once we ascertain that the recklessness from the bus company and the driver matters, we want to envisage it because we can’t have our people being lost on the ground, losing their lives as a result of failure from those who are greedy or from those who are not complying and adhering to the prescript of the law.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The MEC emphasised that if deliberate contribution to the accident is established, murder charges rather than culpable homicide would be pursued, noting that “if you’ve contributed deliberate[ly] on the accident, you must not to be charged with culpable homicide, because usually you arrive at the destination of a lesser sentence.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Three killed, 12 injured after bus plunges off 50m KZN bridge</p>Brake failure suspected in Tongaat bus crash<p>Initial investigations point to mechanical failure as the primary cause of the tragedy, with brake failure emerging as the leading theory. </p><p>Duma confirmed that mechanical failure is “at the top of the edge of what we are told about” regarding the incident’s cause.</p><p> </p><p>The provincial transport department conducted immediate roadworthiness checks on the vehicle, examining permits and documentation as part of standard protocol. </p><p>Duma stressed the importance of ensuring accurate information given the sensitive nature of the accident.</p><p>“At this point in time, we want to be accurate on the information and ensure that we speak on the principle of preliminaries because we remain with the sensitive matters, as in the accident. Picture: Saps </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Police have uncovered counterfeit luxury goods worth an estimated R400 million at a freight depot in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).</p><p>The goods, which are counterfeits of the world’s luxury brands, were found in Edwin Swales, south of Durban, on Tuesday afternoon.</p>Operation<p>Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the discovery was made during a routine cargo profiling operation in Durban.</p><p>“Police were doing a routine cargo profiling when they found two containers which contained counterfeit designer clothes, jewellery and kitchenware. But we were able to get in some good work when our Boks were there on the Monday and Tuesday, and on the Thursday and Friday we got quite a lot of work with the players who were not away at the alignment camp.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Etzebeth eager for URC knockouts after frustrating injury lay-off </p> </p> </p><p>“We trained early on Friday and then flew out later in the day. We feel like this will give us enough time to prepare for the game and we do not feel rushed like we did last time.”</p><p> </p><p> </p>Business class<p>Another bonus was that the Stormers were able to fly business class this time round, unlike usual when they have to make long haul flights in economy to get to the UK and Europe, while they are also able to have a full regular training week ahead of the match.</p><p>“Obviously when you fly business class it is nice and comfortable so you are not nearly as tired when you get to your destination,” said Hlungwani.</p><p>“This is perfect as it gives us a full training week and that makes a massive difference. It’s also nice to be tackling the initial part of the training since arriving without having high fatigue levels like you have when you fly economy.”</p><p>Stormers utility forward Marcell Theunissen echoed the thoughts of his coach, adding that the team was feeling good and confident ahead of their massive playoff encounter.</p><p> </p><p>“It was nice to be in business class, and we thank (team) manager Chippy (Solomons) for that. We feel that we have trained well but also rested well. We got here nice and early but last week we were able to work on some good stuff. Image: Volkswagen do Brasil</sub></p><p>The result of an R4-billion investment into the plant last year, the joint venture between Volkswagen Group Africa, Volkswagen do Brasil and Skoda India has seen South Africa take the lead on project development, despite it being the final market to receive it.</p><p>Unveiled last year in India as the Skoda Kylaq, the “Tera” will seemingly be positioned between the T-Cross and Taigo, although it could become Volkswagen’s smallest SUV locally as production of the former, in Europe, is anticipated to end next year in readiness for its all-electric replacement, the ID.2X.</p>What to expect<p>In Brazil, the Tera occupies the position below the Taigo’s South American sibling, the Nivus, with pricing ranging from below R330000 to a smidgen over R440000 when directly converted from Real to Rands.</p><p>While normally aspirated and turbocharged versions of the 1.0-litre three-cylinder are offered, South Africa is likely to receive only the latter combined with either the five-speed manual gearbox or the optional six-speed Tiptronic.</p><p> </p><p><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/43d6e863-1cfd-415e-b01d-373427f95b3a.jpeg" rel="noopener noreferrer"><sub>Tera’s name will be dropped for South Africa. Picture: TikTok/Farhadhoomer8</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) businessman who was previously accused of terrorism and attempted bombings at major retail stores wants to run for elections in South Africa.</p><p>Farhad Hoomer has registered a new political party called the Islamic State of Africa (ISA), which he wants to be part of the political landscape in the country.</p><p>Hoomer said ISA stands by Sharia Law (Islamic law), which has led people for more than 1300 years.</p>Politics<p>The businessman said that when he entered what he called the “political field”, he did not want to deceive people about his political ambitions.</p><p>“It was easy for me to lie and make a false name and come into politics. But, I wanted to make it clear from day one that we want Shariah Law because there is too much of injustice in the world, especially with democracy enslaving all of mankind,” Hoomer told SAFM. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> 2026 election: Retief Odendaal to stand as DA’s mayoral candidate for NMB metro </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: UK warns citizens of possible terrorist attacks in South Africa, Dirco wants proof for claims</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“So, we wanted to make it very clear that we want Shariah Law, because Shariah Law is here to free all of mankind.”</p>No links to ISIS<p>Hoomer denied claims that ISA is linked to extremist group the Islamic State (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), responsible for terrorism, despite concerns and objections that have been raised.</p><p>Hoomer said people should do their own research about Shariah Law.</p><p>“Don’t believe what the West has sold to the people, that you know what Shariah Law is, evil, it’s terrorism. That’s a lie.”</p><p> </p><p>Hoomer said the ISA had already started preparing for the next local government elections in 2026.</p>Alleged terrorism<p>In November 2022, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions targeting four members of an Islamic State (ISIS) cell operating in South Africa, as well as eight companies they control.</p><p>The Treasury Department’s top terrorist finance watchdog Brian Nelson said the move blacklisted four members of Isis operating in South Africa, including Hoomer, who provided technical, financial or material support to the terrorist group.</p><p>The US Treasury also designated eight companies owned, controlled, or directed by the individuals in this ISIS cell.</p><p> </p><p>It said the sanctions target members of the Durban, South Africa-based Isis cell allegedly led by Hoomer.</p>Kingpin<p>Hoomer was the alleged kingpin behind a spate of “bomb” scares at Woolworths stores in the Pavilion, Gateway and Durban CBD in 2018.</p><p>Despite serious allegations against Hoomer and 19 others, they walked out of court as free men when their case was struck off the roll as the State had failed to justify why it was not ready to proceed with the matter.</p><p>The US Treasury said Hoomer had not ceased his “terror activities” and that he had collaborated with brothers Nufael Akbar and Yunus Muhammad Akbar, who were allegedly senior members of a Durban-based ISIS cell led by Hoomer.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ:Ramaphosa hits outs at US embassy about possible terror attacks</p><p>However, Hoomer has denied all allegations laid against him.</p><p>“There’s no link to the extremist group. I’ve been charged in 2018 for this, and I’ve been proven innocent with no criminal records. I’ve been not found guilty for any of the charges. It’s not a matter of where we need to be instructed by anyone to go and arrest this one. We are a very proud sovereign country that has its own laws and processes.</p><p>“We take it to account where the Constitutional Court also decided when it said that the slogan ‘Kill the Boer’, ‘Kill the Farmer’ is a liberation chant and slogan and it’s not meant to be a message that illicitly calls upon anyone to go and be killed,” Ramaphosa said.</p>Morgan reacts<p>However, Ramaphosa’s comment did not sit well with Morgan.</p><p> </p><p>“Oh come off it, Mr President – it’s literally a threat, and incitement, to kill,” Morgan said in a post on X.</p><p>ALSO READ:Trump changes tune and ‘agrees’ to participate in G20 Summit, Ramaphosa says</p><p>Ramaphosa said South Africa is a country where “freedom of expression is the bedrock of our constitution”.</p>‘Kill the Boer’<p>In March, lobby group AfriForum suffered a final blow in its attempt to have the controversial chant “Kill the Boer, kill the farmer” declared as hate speech.</p><p> </p><p>The Constitutional Court (ConCourt) delivered a brief ruling dismissing AfriForum’s application for leave to appeal.</p><p>The ConCourt concluded that the application “bears no reasonable prospects of success”.</p>Malema not intimidated<p>On Sunday, Malema said he doesn’t fear for his life after Trump called for his arrest.</p><p>Addressing EFF supporters during a rally in Ward 16, Koppies, in the Free State on Africa Day, Malema said he would never be intimidated by Trump.</p><p> </p><p>“Well, I’m not fearful. As a revolutionary, part of being killed is one of those honours you must wear with pride, but I’m not going to be reckless. When he says to Ramaphosa, why is this man not in jail, why are you not arresting this man? He simply means, why are you not killing this man, because this man wants to kill white people? That’s what he believes.”</p><p>Malema said Ramaphosa could not present the facts to Trump.</p><p>“I will never stop singing a song that Winnie Mandela sang. Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Are there enough safe spaces to help tackle stigma and remove the shame associated with menstruation? </p><p>For every woman and every young girl out there, you will be met with a different answer, given their proximity to accessible information and resources as a result of the environments they come from. </p><p>This year marks 11 years since the first Menstrual Hygiene Day was declared – a day created to drive awareness about the importance of menstrual health and tackling the stigmas attached to menstruation. </p><p>With this year’s theme being Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld, it served as a reminder that there’s still a massive gap in society that requires everyone to play a role in creating a friendly world for not only young girls and women, but also for parents to help steer their children. </p><p>For a period-friendly world to exist, the larger population has to acknowledge just how inequality – both gender and economic – has had a hand in determining how important matters of menstruation mean for girls. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> What most women look for in a job – report </p> </p> </p><p>According to Stellenbosch University Hospital, 30% of girls in South Africa experience period poverty – with this fact only representing a fraction of young girls who do not have access to sanitary products. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Threading through trauma: Yonela Doda’s journey of healing through mixed media art</p><p>So why aren’t we, as a society, dismantling the idea of period poverty? </p><p>Other factors that add to period poverty include stigmas driven by cultural taboos, menstrual-specific programmes and lessons in schools to the lack of realistic marketing around menstruation. </p><p>These are just some of the factors that have been a barrier in equipping those affected from fully embracing a positive period experience. </p><p> </p><p>As a woman who’s navigated this journey and a leader in the home and personal care space who has marketed sanitary products to women, my role became a lot more than just about selling products, but placing a responsibility to ensure that no teenage girl or woman gets left behind. </p><p>For many of us, one of the first and most influential sources of information about our periods comes from the women in our lives – mothers, aunts, grandmothers and older cousins, who have been our “safe spaces” in navigating challenges around managing periods. </p><p>However, through their wisdom, there’s been a lot of “figuring things out” on our own because they, too, could only pass on what they were taught and in some instances, their knowledge perpetuated cycles of shame. </p><p>ALSO READ: Femagene launches #FemEffect: Supporting women with menstrual cup donations</p><p> </p><p>Recently Lil-Lets SA launched a campaign called Cycle Breakers – which took a bold step of ensuring that not only do we break the cycle of shame and stigma, but that parents are at the forefront of creating safe spaces for their teenage girls who have started their first period. </p><p>The success of the campaign also grabbed the attention of the department of basic education to have Lil-Lets as a partner at the upcoming Indaba on Menstrual Health and Sanitary Dignity this week. </p><p>The campaign used people with teenage daughters to unpack the challenges that most parent-daughter relationships experience. It also highlighted the resources and tools that LilLets has that many parents and teenagers need at this time. </p><p>Placing the onus on parents to be better equipped for navigating these experiences has been an eye-opener in ensuring that girls move in the world with a sense of confidence in navigating their periods. Pictures: Picture: Steve Haag Sports/Gallo Images and Warren Little/Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Sharks captain Eben Etzebeth said he looks forward to a “positive” word with fellow Springbok lock Jean Kleyn in the ruck when their teams clash in the United Rugby Championship quarter-finals.</p><p>The Sharks host Kleyn’s Munster at Kings Park on Saturday (kick-off 6.30pm) with the victors to face the winner between the Bulls and Edinburgh either at Loftus, if the Bulls progress, or at Kings Park Stadium if Edinburgh do, in the semi-finals the following weekend.</p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/URC-play-offs-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><p>The number four locks have faced each other only a limited number of times in competitive rugby, though they have trained together for the Springboks and the Stormers. Etzebeth and Kleyn also featured in both of the Springbok alignment camps held so far this year.</p>‘Solid player for Munster’<p>When Etzebeth was in the running for the World Rugby Player of the Year award, Kleyn described his counterpartas “by far the most dominant tighthead lock to have probably played the game in the last 10 or 15 years”.</p><p>Now ahead of their URC quarter-final, Etzebeth said it was always good to go up against a fellow Springbok.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Bulls to stave off Edinburgh’s momentum with their ‘golden nugget’ </p> </p> </p><p>“I am sure there will be once or twice we will probably get each other in a ruck and have something to say to each other in a positive way,” the Sharks captain smiled.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“He’s a good man, a good, solid player for Munster, and I am looking forward to going up against him.”</p>Sharks do not have an easy game<p>The Sharks ended the league phase with an impressive third-place finish despite eight tight wins. It was their highest finish and they will also want to push on after not progressing further than the quarter-finals since South African teams joined the URC in the 2021/22 season.</p><p>Etzebeth said the advantage of a home quarter-final – another first for the Durban side – will do them good, but they also know Munster are strong away from home.</p><p>The Irish side have won the URC in it’s current format once, and in its previous format three times.</p><p> </p><p>Their URC win came in 2022/23 when they won all three knockout games away from home.
