Photo: Gerhard Duraan/BackpagePix</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Orlando Pirates will have one final chance to end their 2024/25 season on a high note when they face Magesi FC in a Betway Premiership match at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday (kick-off is at 7.30pm).</p><p>Victory for the second-placed Buccaneers will increase their point tally to 63 points, which is better than last season, when they collected 50 points in 30 games.</p><p>ALSO READ: Former Bafana striker set for Pirates exit</p><p>Even though they once again failed to topple Mamelodi Sundowns, it is a big improvement from last season, considering that the games were reduced to 28 matches this campaign after the termination of Royal AM’s membership by the League.</p><p>Pirates will, however, need a better performance if they are to beat Dikwena tsa Meetse following their below-par performance against AmaZulu in the previous league encounter last Saturday.</p><p>Siphiwe Selepe, who scored the equalizer for the Buccaneers in the 1-1 draw against Usuthu, has admitted they were lucky to walk away with a point against Arthur Zwane’s side.</p><p>“I think in the first half we created chances, but we couldn’t convert,” Selepe told Pirates media.</p><p>“It was a bit scrappy because they were a bit more in control of the ball. We were playing off second balls, which is something we are not used to. Picture: iStock </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police have made a breakthrough and arrested two suspects linked to the murders of four people in the province.</p><p>The incident happened at a house in Dundee on Friday evening.</p>Arrests<p>Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the two male victims were aged 31 and 35 years old.</p><p>“The two suspects who allegedly shot and killed four people at a house at Mzomusha area in Dundee were arrested by police in Dundee on Sunday night, 25 May.”</p><p>Netshiunda said police received a “tip-off” from a community member about the suspects involved in the murders.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> JUST IN: Police arrest man linked to murder of Olorato Mongale in Durban </p> </p> </p><p>“The information was operationalised. It is further reported that the suspects demanded money and drugs from a 29-year-old woman.</p><p> </p><p>“A scuffle reportedly ensued between one suspect and the woman, which led to her being shot multiple times,” Netshiunda said.</p><p>Netshiunda added that the suspects searched her and took an undisclosed amount of money.</p><p>“A 14-year-old girl was also shot multiple times and died at the scene. Picture: Darren Stewart/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Proteas will play a one-off T20 match against neighbours, Namibia, in Windhoek later this year, it was confirmed by Cricket South Africa on Tuesday.</p><p>The match will take place on October 11 and will be the first encounter between the sides.</p><p>It will serve as the official opening of the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground (NCG), which will also be a host venue for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2026 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2027.</p><p>CSA Chief Executive Officer, Pholetsi Moseki commented: “We are honoured to be part of this historic occasion. Namibia are a competitive side, and this fixture reflects the growing strength of cricket on the continent.</p><p>“As a fellow African cricketing nation and the host of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, we are proud to support the official opening of this new cricket ground which will be one of the host venues of the tournament.”</p><p>Cricket Namibia Chief Executive Officer, Johan Muller added: “This truly is a memorable occasion. Picture: Neil McCartney / The Citizen</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>President Cyril Ramaphosa will field multiple questions from members of parliament on Tuesday afternoon.</p><p>At least six of the president’s answers will be for oral reply and will feature topics of national and international importance. </p><p>The opportunity for Ramaphosa to respond to questions in person forms part of an oversight mechanism for members of parliament to hold the executive to account.</p>Ramaphosa Q and A<p>Ramaphosa will set the parliamentary tone for the week, after which ministers in the social services sector will field their own questions.</p><p>Here are the six topics for Ramaphosa to elaborate on:</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Let SA rise above the false narratives </p> </p> </p>Proposed mineral resource taxation<p>The ANC’s Mdumiseni Ntuli will be inquiring about the taxation of extracted minerals as a way to fund economic growth. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Ntuli cited a World Bank report stating that governments globally were missing out on 60% of the potential revenue from exported minerals.</p><p>South Africa already has a Mineral Petroleum and Resources Royalty (MPRR) payable when transferring minerals extracted from the Republic.</p><p>It has been in effect since March 2010 with all funds collected going to the National Revenue Fund.</p>Cost of basic household necessities<p>Statistics South Africa’s monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for April showed a 2.8% increase compared to the same period last year.</p><p> </p><p>Since 2020, the CPI has fluctuated between 3% and 6% for the same mid-year period, exacerbated by the interest rate.</p><p>However, a National Planning Commission research report into cost of living trends showed that poverty rates since 2011 were broadly similar across various groupings.</p><p>DA’s George Michalakis will be asking what the president plans to do to shield South Africans from consumer pressures.</p>National policies for economic growth<p>The same shows that while basic services in the country have expanded to wider areas, the quality of the services has declined.</p><p> </p><p>This has had a particularly significant impact on low-income communities, with cities across the country struggling to provide greater economic opportunities.</p><p>“The composition of household income has remained largely unchanged over the period…confirming the importance of labour market income for escaping poverty,” the report read.</p><p>Freedom Front Plus’ Corne Mulder will be pressing the president on his policies for economic growth.</p>SA’s role in resolving Ukraine conflict<p>Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky visited South Africa in April but left within hours after Kyiv, the Capital of Ukraine, was hit by a barrage of bombs.</p><p> </p><p>Ramaphosa has met with both sides, but fighting has intensified, with Russia striking several more targets and Ukraine forced to recruit teenagers to the frontline, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.</p><p>US President Donald Trump has vowed to end the conflict, but has thus far failed to do so. 3159488	有图 <p> The department also confirmed that the principal of Hoërskool Waterkloof is facing a disciplinary process. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/bullying-2.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has continued to address matters surrounding school function transfers, disciplinary processes, and fire safety in schools.</p><p>On Monday, the department addressed a series of concerns, including allegations of teacher posts being sold at Unity Secondary School, the fire incident at Riverlea High School, and funding challenges for Schools of Specialisation.</p><p>Additionally, GDE on Tuesday formally transferred the responsibility of paying municipal accounts back to schools in Eldorado Park.</p>Schools regain control of municipal payments<p>This comes after the department temporarily assumed the function in April 2024 due to “poor financial management” by some School Governing Bodies (SGBs).</p><p>According to the department, the transfer was in line with the South African Schools Act.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Terrifying house robbery and kidnapping shocks </p> </p> </p><p>“The six fee-paying schools in Eldorado Park were formally informed in 2023 that the responsibility […] would be returned to them. Picture: Michel Bega/The Citizen</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Analysts are not surprised by the decision to raise the donation disclosure threshold and annual limit in the Political Party Funding Act (PPFA).</p><p>This follows the National Assembly’s adoption of a report from the portfolio committee on Home Affairs.</p><p>The report proposes doubling the current threshold for disclosing donations to political parties — from R100 000 to R200 000 — as well as raising the annual donation cap from R15 million to R30 million.</p>Political Party Funding Act amended<p>The proposed changes follow the signing of the Electoral Matters Amendment Act (EMAA) into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa in May 2024.</p><p>The EMAA revised the PPFA, removing the original disclosure threshold and donation limit altogether for declarations to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Durban man previously accused of terrorism wants to run for election </p> </p> </p><p>This loophole was challenged by the non-profit organisation (NPO) My Vote Counts, leading to a Western Cape High Court ruling that ordered the reinstatement of the previous limits and required parliament to determine new figures.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: ‘It’s a waste of people’s time’: Politicians argue about party donations</p><p>The president is empowered to implement regulations related to these thresholds. However, this must be done through a resolution adopted by parliament.</p><p>Now that parliament has acted, concerns have emerged about the implications for political transparency and accountability, especially around private funding in politics.</p>Analysts weigh in on political party funding threshold hike<p>Political analyst Ntsikelelo Breakfast weighed in on the rationale behind doubling the threshold and donation limit, considering the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) previously concluded there was no basis for the initial figures of R100 000 and R15 million.</p><p> </p><p>The Nelson Mandela University senior lecturer noted that the PPFA was enacted in response to a court ruling compelling political parties to disclose their sources of funding.</p><p>“This is not their brainchild. They’ve been forced by circumstances to account on the principle of transparency. </p><p>“Many political parties argue that this legislation has really dealt them a blow in a big way because now they have to reveal their funders,” he told The Citizen on Monday.</p><p>Breakfast also highlighted the financial pressure the legislation may have placed on some political parties, particularly the ANC, which has previously faced difficulties in paying staff salaries</p><p> </p><p>“To me, that justifies why the numbers have gone up and why none of them is opposed to that.”</p><p>READ MORE: Why South Africa’s youth voters are staying away from the polls</p><p>The PBO had recommended inflation-adjusted thresholds of R122 000 for disclosure and R21 million for the annual donation cap. </p><p>In light of this, North-West University professor André Duvenhage described the decision to double these amounts as “very arbitrary”.</p><p> </p><p>“There’s a huge need for getting more and more money and that is the main reason for the adjustments, but there can be no specific rationale for just doubling the R100 000 and R15 million.</p><p>“If they work with inflation, it will be quite a different figure. So I can read a lot of political motives. I can see the ANC specifically in trouble,” Duvenhage told The Citizen.</p>Transparency and financial pressures<p>Duvenhage suggested that both the ANC and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) might be under financial pressure due to the PPFA, but smaller parties are even more disadvantaged. </p><p>The political analyst also noted that many parties are not fully transparent about theirfinancial backing.</p><p> </p><p>He further expressed concern that the increased thresholds might open the door to greater private—and even foreign—influence in South African politics.</p><p>READ MORE: ‘Can you imagine our system being hacked’: MPs sceptical of IEC’s e-voting proposal</p><p>“I think this might be the political party environment a lot more vulnerable in that sense.”</p><p>Breakfast echoed similar sentiments.</p><p>“Why do you want to engage in certain political operations in private, but you say that you are for the public? Why do you discuss money in private?”</p>Has the Political Party Funding Act worked?<p>When asked about the effectiveness of the PPFA since its implementation in 2021, Breakfast emphasised that the law has increased voter awareness about the sources of political party funding.</p><p>He cited instances where parties like ActionSA and Rise Mzansi had received support from the Oppenheimer family, and stressed that the legislation empowers voters by enabling more informed decisions at the polls.</p><p>“Now we know what is the agenda because of this legislation,” Breakfast said, adding that voters can “connect the dots” when evaluating party policies.</p><p>Duvenhage stated that he believed there was “a lot of room for misconduct” prior to the law’s enactment.</p><p>“I think in comparison, the dispensation post-2021 was better than the one pre-2021.”</p>Legal and constitutional dynamics<p>A key question now is whether the president has the authority to reject or revise the amounts adopted by parliament.</p><p>Breakfast referenced the doctrine of separation of powers in response.</p><p>“Nothing can be done without the buy-in from legislature. I think it’s just a testament to showing up every day and trusting what you’re doing,” said the 37-year-old South African.</p><p>“And it’s not just myself. They were also found guilty of kidnapping, count 2.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Terrifying house robbery and kidnapping shocks </p> </p> </p><p>Joshlin disappeared from the family’s home in Saldanha Bay on 19 February 2024. </p><p> </p><p> </p>Joshlin case: Defence grills witness<p>Mkabayi cross-examined expert witness Marcel van der Watt, president of the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), following his detailed analysis of the case.</p><p>During the cross-examination, Van Der Watt informed the court that he had been requested by State Prosecutor Zelda Swanepoel to conduct an analysis of the case, and that he would not receive compensation for the work done. </p><p>“When arrangements were made, I was not informed I would be compensated. There was no agreement made on compensation. She has been a phenomenal leader in the field of human trafficking. Everyone knows Swanepoel; she has done phenomenal work in this space, particularly in prosecuting trafficking matters. So, yes, I definitely knew Swanepoel before this matter,” said Van Der Watt. </p><p>“Thank you for that profile, although I didn’t ask for it,” said Mkabayi.</p>Human trafficking sentences<p>She then turned to the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act, which lists factors that must be considered by the court when sentencing human trafficking cases.</p><p> </p><p>Mkabayi asked, “Would I be correct if I said you are being compensated for your testimony today?”</p><p>“You have listed the factors that the state must look at in considering sentencing human traffickers and kidnappers. Picture: Facebook/Uninformed citizen</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>South Africa pays approximately R230 million monthly in royalties to Lesotho for water from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, while Lesotho owes R513 million in outstanding value-added tax (VAT) refunds as of February 2024.</p><p>These monthly payments drop to around R120 million during periods when water delivery is disrupted. </p><p>According to a briefing on Tuesday by the Department of Water and Sanitation to the portfolio committee on Water and Sanitation, the royalty structure operates on a 56-44% split favouring Lesotho.</p><p>Teboho Nkhahle, South African Chief Delegate to the Lesotho Highlands Water Commission, confirmed South Africa “started paying the revised royalties in January 2024” following recalculations using updated methodologies. </p><p>“We are currently paying around R230 million a month. But in the last six months, because there was no water being delivered and no electricity being generated, we’re paying around R120 million a month.”</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Makhubele shoots down Starlink as ‘frivolous’ while Malatsi champions space for competition </p> </p> </p><p>The current treaty includes a 12-year review cycle for royalty rates. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Committee members called for external auditing by the Auditor General of South Africa to provide more rigorous oversight. </p><p>South Africa’s Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister David Mahlobo indicated willingness to explore such arrangements, stating: “We will mandate our teams that we should find modalities… that are more credible on ensuring that even that institution is on the other side.”</p><p>The R513 million VAT debt represents outstanding VAT refunds that Lesotho owes to South Africa. </p><p>Nkhahle confirmed that diplomatic efforts are underway to resolve these financial obligations.</p><p> </p>Lesotho Highlands Water Project costs escalate to R53.3 billion<p>The second phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project will deliver an additional 490 million cubic meters of water annually to South Africa, supplementing 780 million cubic meters from Phase One.</p><p>The water primarily serves Gauteng province.</p><p>The project operates under the 1986 treaty between South Africa and Lesotho, with oversight from the Lesotho Highlands Water Commission, comprising six commissioners from each country.</p><p>Mahlobo confirmed that the project remains on track for commissioning by 2029, despite recent setbacks, including contractor suspensions due to negligence and concerns over pollution.</p><p> </p><p>“The project is proceeding,” Mahlobo stated, emphasising that different work packages continue simultaneously even when specific components face delays.</p><p>The project’s budget has escalated significantly from its original estimates, with current projections at R53.3 billion.</p><p>Originally estimated to cost R42.06 billion, the project escalated to R53.3 billion. Mahlobo reaffirmed that water delivery is expected by August 2028, with completion scheduled for September 2028.</p><p>Construction progress has reached 77% for major components. </p><p> </p><p>Nkahle explained that the R53.3 billion long-term cost plan already includes R6.2 billion in contingencies. </p><p>“This escalation and contingencies [are ]already built into this long-term cost plan, and also furthermore, each contract also has built in contingency,” Nkhahle said.</p><p>ALSO READ: Completion date for R53 billion Lesotho Highlands Water Project postponed again</p>Lesotho Highlands Water Project financial structure<p>Committee members expressed concern about the impact on water tariffs and the need for transparency in cost management. </p><p> </p><p>“All of us who are very worried, very worried around the issues of cost escalation, some of the cost escalation is because of the issues of contingencies,” Mahlobo acknowledged during the briefing.</p><p>South Africa bears all cost-related payments through the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), which borrows from markets and recovers costs through water tariffs. </p><p>Water tariffs have been negotiated with end users, such as Randwater, “over CPI” to account for escalating costs.</p><p>The funding strategy incorporates long-term loans to prevent sharp tariff increases. </p><p>Additionally, 33% of project costs are allocated to acid mine drainage treatment, a decision made to protect the quality of water being transferred from Lesotho.</p><p>Percy Sechemane, TCTA CEO, confirmed the funding arrangements where South Africa receives “the enduring benefit of water transfer.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Full Vaal Dam to the rescue as Lesotho Highlands Water Project takes bad turn</p>Contractor suspension and pollution issues<p>A major contractor was temporarily suspended due to negligence, specifically related to pollution in the construction area. </p><p>The suspension was triggered by environmental concerns affecting water quality in the Katse Dam reservoir.</p><p>“The contractor was indeed actually suspended. He had to undergo an operation which included a titanium plate and half a dozen screws. He watched the French MotoGP on television before getting the green flag to race at Silverstone last weekend.</p><p>Moodley kept a low profile at the end of the field at Silverstone. He was still regaining his fitness and served two long-lap penalties for causing the collision at Jerez, which caused his injury. I seriously injured others,” Hasan said of the attack in August in the western city of Solingen.</p><p>“Some of them survived only by luck. Picture: Gallo Images / OJ Koloti </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi sat with measured composure as members of the portfolio committee on Communications grilled his “Starlink” proposal.</p><p>Malatsi had been accused in recent days of gazetting a new regulation on procurement efficiency as a way to pave the way for international investors to circumvent the country’s transformation objectives.</p><p>uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party vowed to make Malatsi’s appearance before the committee a difficult one, with many other committee members following their cue.</p>Communications competition <p>Malatsi and department officials gave a presentation on Tuesday on how the proposed regulation was formulated, stating that one of the main objectives was to create an environment where competition could thrive. </p><p>“It is the lack of competition in the market that appears to be the greatest impediment to lower prices for consumers,” the report stated.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Manyi to remain MP despite being axed as MK party chief whip </p> </p> </p><p>MK party member Colleen Makhubele disagreed with the assertion, using figures provided in the department’s presentation.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The department stated that there were 490 active individual electronic communications network services licences and roughly 2200 class electronic communications network services licences in existence in South Africa. </p><p>“I think your reason for competition is flimsy, it’s frivolous. It should have not even have been raised in this platform,” said Makhubele.</p><p>“What you should be doing is to ensure these 490 are empowered enough to create good competition for the dominant [companies],” she added.</p>Policy directive for Icasa<p>Regulation 17.8 was gazetted on 23 May, sparking the theory that Malatsi’s decision had been the result of discussions between officials from South Africa and the US that week.</p><p> </p><p>The department’s presentation showed that the Competition Commission issued a Data Services Market Inquiry (DSMI) report on 2 December 2019.</p><p>“Amongst others, the DSMI report observed that high prices may also be caused by hindrances to effective competition, regardless of the cost level,’ the presentation stated.</p><p>The report advised that a policy directive should be formulated and issued to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), with the proposed regulation being the result.</p><p>Malatsi said that since being appointed minister, the department set a timeline for the policy directive process to be finalised by mid-June.</p><p> </p><p>“We are now in May, and we have gazetted the regulation in the third week of May. It is the following of a due process that has been taking place for some time,” said Malatsi.</p><p>“Whenever any new leader assumes responsibility, you start with the landscape. 3159475	有图 <p> The analysis revealed striking differences in data collection among popular AI services, with some collecting up to 90% of possible data types. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/AI-Chatbots.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: iStock </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A new Surfshark report has revealed that while AI-powered chatbots have become essential tools for gathering information and creating content, they come with a significant trade-off in privacy.</p><p>The analysis revealed striking differences in data collection practices among popular AI services, with some platforms collecting up to 90% of possible data types.</p>AI data collection<p>Karolis Kaciulis, a Leading System Engineer at Surfshark, stated that a comprehensive examination of AI data collection practices reveals the hidden costs of “free” AI assistance and emphasises the importance of privacy awareness when selecting AI tools.</p><p>“We identified the 10 most popular AI chatbots, with Meta AI added as an additional app on May 20, 2025, and analysed their privacy details on the Apple App Store.</p><p>“The comparison was based on how many types of data each app collects, whether it collects any data linked to you, and whether the app includes third-party advertisers. This includes precise location data, which only Gemini, Meta AI, Copilot, and Perplexity collect.</p><p>ChatGPT collects 10 types of data, such as contact information, user content, identifiers, usage data, and diagnostics, while avoiding tracking data or using third-party advertising within the app.</p><p> </p><p>Copilot, Poe, and Jasper are the three apps that collect data used to track you. This data could be sold to data brokers or used to display targeted advertisements in your app.</p>Chatbots<p>Kaciulis said AI chatbots learn from diverse sources of information, with Meta AI having the additional factor of learning from Facebook and Instagram posts and images.</p><p>“People should keep in mind that even though these chatbots may provide you with a quick answer, the results they get are mediocre. Why is that? We started so well, we were 13-0 up in the final and we lost it. So for me it is about 80 minutes, and getting all those little things right … starts, finishing, benches, rotation, game time. All of those things are what we have to look at and get right.”</p>Level record<p>The Bulls have a one-one record against Edinburgh this season, edging their first game of the URC campaign 22-16 at Loftus, before going down last month (in the Challenge Cup), and White believes there is plenty they can take out of their most recent defeat.</p><p>“We can take a lot out of that game. We finished well against them and that gives me hope. Like I said after that game had it gone on for another five minutes, I have no doubt that we would have won it, and that says a lot,” said White.</p><p>“I know there are a lot of things that we, and I, could have changed in the build up to that game. Selection wise, rotation wise, using the bench better.</p><p> </p><p>“There are a lot of things that I look at in that game and know that if I was a little bit more streetwise and aware of what happened last time, it will help us this time round.”</p><p>The Bulls are also looking strong on the injury front, with just their three long term injuries unavailable for this weekend.</p><p>“We are not in a bad place. Guys like Elrigh (Louw), Gerhard Steenekamp and Johan Goosen are not available this week. But other than that, we are really in a good place. Some of us cannot do without the early morning pick-me-up coffee, but other drink only tea. And if they drink only tea, which kind of tea do they prefer?</p><p>Eighty20 spills the tea on what South Africans like to sip by looking at the data. Andrew Fulton, director at Eighty20, says while coffee may be the go-to morning pick-me-up for many, tea remains the true global favourite, second only to water as the most consumed beverage in the world according to the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).</p><p>“In South Africa, it is common to ask if people want Rooibos or regular when offering a cup of tea, and this shows how popular Rooibos is. Grown exclusively in the Cederberg region of the Western Cape, this naturally caffeine-free tea has become a global favourite. Just like Champagne, only products from this region can proudly carry the Rooibos name.”</p><p>The data shows that over 22.6 million South African adults enjoy Rooibos, green tea or traditional tea every day. And they do not only stick to just one type of tea, Fulton says. Almost 30% of traditional tea drinkers also sip some Rooibos daily, and almost half of them pair their tea habits with a daily cup of coffee.</p><p>Fulton says for brands this is a clear signal that tea time is all the time and for grocers, it is also important to look at complementary products, such as sugar. South Africa’s tea market is also brewing strong, projected to hit $447.29 million in revenue by 2025 with a steady annual growth of 3.07%.</p><p>Joko tea and Glen tea are the market leaders for traditional teas in South Africa, while Freshpak remains the top pick for over half of all Rooibos drinkers.</p><p>ALSO READ: 10 surprising facts about Rooibos</p><p> </p>More people are drinking tea<p>Fulton says the consumption of traditional tea is increasing in East Asia, Africa and Latin America, but declining in Europe and North America. In North America, herbal teas and other ready-to-drink beverages are becoming more popular.</p><p>“This trend also positively affects our local tea substitute, Rooibos. The global Rooibos tea market is estimated to be worth approximately $1.3 billion in 2023, thanks to Rooibos Limited, the largest producer and distributor of Rooibos tea, exporting to 50 countries worldwide.</p><p>What is the difference between traditional tea and Rooibos? Traditional teas like black, green and Oolong all come from the Camellia sinensis plant, but Rooibos tea is different. It is technically not a true tea but a tisane, a caffeine-free herbal infusion made by steeping plant materials in hot water.</p><p>According to Fulton, people are switching to Rooibos all over the world, not only because it is a delightful drink but also due to its numerous health benefits. “This naturally caffeine-free beverage is rich in antioxidants, helps to reduce blood pressure and improves cholesterol levels, soothes an aching stomach and can help to clear your skin.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Rooibos industry paid R12 million to Khoi and San community in historic move</p>What the data shows about tea drinkers<p>There is also tea drinking demographics that show how much people all over the world love a cuppa. Using data from MAPS, a survey of 20 000 South Africans conducted by the MRF, Eighty20 a consumer analytics and data science agency, shows that women, Indians and Asians are over-indexed for all types of tea.</p><p>The data also shows that Rooibos tea drinkers have marginally higher personal and household incomes than people who drink traditional tea, but the average household income of people who prefer green tea is nearly twice that of other tea drinkers. Green tea drinkers are also younger and better educated.</p><p>Fulton says looking at the Eighty20 National Segmentation groups, poorer segments, such as the Humble Elders and Mothers of the Nation, tend to drink traditional tea, while Comfortable Retirees prefer Rooibos tea and the Heavy Hitters and Middle Class opt for green tea. Being able to come home after a great few years overseas, I’m beyond excited.</p><p>“Over the last 12 months, the strength, courage, and love in your heart have been at the centre of our little family. I love you more than you will ever know. And as always, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. Picture: tyla/Instagram </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>In typical American style, the American Music Awards (AMA) didn’t heed Tyla’s call to not box all Africans in one group at international music awards.</p><p>South Africa’s Tyla won the Afrobeats Artist of the Year at the recent AMAs. Tyla won despite being nominated alongside Afrobeats artists like Rema, Wizkid and Asake.</p><p>R&B singer Tems was the other nominee; however, at least Tems’ music has influences of Afrobeats.</p><p>Of all the nominated artists, Tyla is the one artist whose music isn’t Afrobeats or has strong influences of the Nigerian genre.</p><p>The 51st Annual American Music Awards were held at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas in Las Vegas on Monday. Jennifer Lopez hosted the show for the second time, following the 2015 ceremony.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Tyla thrilled to host Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2025 </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Tyla calls out international awards after winning Afrobeats gong at MTV VMAs [VIDEO]</p><p> </p><p> </p>Tyla speaking out<p>In September of last year, Tyla won an Afrobeats award at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) and spoke about how bittersweet it was for her.</p><p>“This is just so special but also bittersweet because I know there’s a tendency to group all Africans under Afrobeats,” Tyla said in her acceptance speech.</p><p>“Even though Afrobeats has run things and has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse… more than just Afrobeats.”</p><p>A HUGE moment for Africa and African Music 🌍 @Tyllaaaaaaa takes home the Best Afrobeats award for “Water” 🏆 #VMAs pic.twitter.com/5MYNt0QJiB</p><p> </p>— MTVAfrica (@MTVAfrica) September 12, 2024 <p>Afrobeats is a Nigerian genre that blends influences from other Nigerian styles, including Fuji—a Yorùbá traditional music rooted in percussion and choral call-and-response.</p><p>Afrobeats is also a cocktail of juju, jazz, highlife, funk and soul.</p><p>The South African singer, whose real name is Tyla Laura Seethal, used the opportunity at the VMAs to educate its international audience on the disparities of African music.</p><p> </p><p>“I come from South Africa, I represent Amapiano, I represent my culture… I just want to shout-out all the Afrobeats artists in this category with me,” said Tyla, paying homage to some of the Nigerian artists she was nominated alongside.</p><p>“This is such a big moment for Africa, African music.
