3155202	有图 <p> The fake WhatsApp calls for a block and shutdown of highways, schools, shutting down the American embassy and Consulate and closing down targeted American businesses. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Police-officers.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: Gallo Images/ Frennie Shivambu</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Police have cautioned the public to stop spreading WhatsApp messages that seek to mobilise communities to shut down and block Gauteng highways, close schools, shut down the American embassy and Consulate, as well as close down targeted American businesses and food outlets in Gauteng</p><p>The message being shared on WhatsApp claims there are confirmed reports of a highway shutdown on Monday, the 26th of May, starting at 7:30am. </p><p>According to the message, the N1 Sandton, N1 Pretoria and M1 and M2 motorways will be affected.</p><p>The fake WhatsApp comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s highly anticipated meeting with his US counterpart, President Donald Trump in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington on Wednesday., </p>Fake news<p>Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola warned those behind the misleading WhatsApp message to refrain from spreading fake news and misinformation.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> SA Weather forecasts cool and fine weather with rains and winds </p> </p> </p><p>“Members of the public are warned that this WhatsApp message only seeks to instil fear, bully community members and incite violence.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Members of the public are therefore advised to ignore this WhatsApp message and refrain from sharing it further,” Mathe said.</p><p>ALSO READ:Hawks arrest suspect for making threats against President Cyril Ramaphosa</p>High alert<p>Mathe said Masemola also assured all Gauteng residents that police under the command of the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, are working closely with law enforcement agencies and private security, are on high alert and will “not tolerate any lawlessness”.</p><p>Masemola said all businesses, schools and other services will be fully functional and operational and accessible.</p><p> </p><p>He said there will be no highway shutdown or road closures.</p><p>“We are not going to allow lawlessness and acts of criminality; those who are found to be on the wrong side of the law will be dealt with accordingly. 3155201	有图 <p> While everything else about school faded away, segments of poems I once drank in as nectar in English class still float into my mind. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Poetry.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: iStock </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Lately, I have taken to learning poetry off by heart, by choice. English teachers everywhere swoon.</p><p>Admittedly, I’m only three poems in and the longest is 18 lines, but it’s a start. And, sure, it didn’t begin as my idea, but as a challenge in the New York Times to learn a poem off pat, in this instance the marvellous Recuerdo, by Edna St Vincent Millay.</p><p>I read it and knew I wanted it to be part of me forever. The last time I did that, I was in standard eight and incensed by the poem My Name by Magoleng wa Selepe.</p><p>So I committed it to memory and declaimed it on stage at a Christmas concert as if I was the black protagonist, even collapsing dramatically for the opening couplet, which I have never forgotten: “Look what they have done to my name, the wonderful name of my great-great-grandmother…”</p><p>Then I completely mangled the next bit. That’s the name in question: Nomgqibelo Ncamisile Mnqhibisa. I always used to enjoy a good poem – for me, this meant it had some rhyme or rhythm or repetition to hook the brain – but it’s ages since I read poetry for pleasure – and as for learning it by heart? Hah!</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Mpumalanga primary school pupils treated for food poisoning after eating oranges </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Afrikaner ‘refugees’ spot a ruse</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>But, while everything else about school faded away, segments of poems I once drank in as nectar in English class still float into my mind, like sunlight on water.</p><p>On receiving an envelope, I might recall: “None will hear the postman’s knock without a quickening of the heart, for who can bear to feel himself forgotten?” (WH Auden).</p><p>On watching the TV news, I’ll think “things fall apart, the centre cannot hold”, and as I wonder why we aren’t all on the streets in rage, I’ll remember: “The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.” (WB Yeats).</p><p>When putting on a brave face while collapsing inside, I’ll hear clearly in my heart: “I was much further out than you thought, and not waving but drowning.” (Stevie Smith). Picture: X</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A common practice in the defence sector to sweeten deals with governments is to offer “counter-trade” or “offset” provisions, which effectively return part of the purchase price to the buyer or to people in the form of investment.</p><p>The concept is also one of the most abused in international trade, as our own country can testify, having seen only fractions of the R20 billion promised by European weapons makers in our arms deal in the ’90s.</p><p>That’s why the suggestion by Communications Minister Solly Malatsi for equivalent investment programmes as a way to get around the broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) rules in the communications sector needs to be assessed very carefully.</p><p>His proposal would make it easier for Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet product to be sold in South Africa, because the company would not have to be 30% owned by black people or companies. Instead, an amount would have to be spent on programmes or projects which would offer a direct, empowering benefit for black people.</p><p>ALSO READ: Malatsi summoned to Parliament to explain Starlink policy directive</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Malatsi summoned to Parliament to explain Starlink policy directive </p> </p> </p><p>The ANC, via communications portfolio chair Khusela Diko, is apparently up in arms – backed by local communications companies – because Malatsi’s proposal is allegedly illegal.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Would we be too cynical to wonder whether Malatsi’s idea – allegedly put together by his party, the DA, behind the backs of its government of national unity (GNU) partners – is offensive to the ANC because it would keep the comrades away from the Starlink feeding trough?</p><p>Interesting that a company run by Diko’s husband was linked to massive corruption in personal protective equipment tenders during Covid-19… although she was cleared of any wrongdoing by the ANC…</p><p>This, though, could be much bigger than just Musk. Picture: Screengrab. </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>There was a moment when Cyril Ramaphosa might have conjured a victory.</p><p>All it would have taken was a smidgeon of humanity and a teaspoonful of courage. Sadly, even so low a bar was too much for a president who invariably fails to rise to the occasion.</p><p>The opportunity occurred during what the media melodramatically describes as Donald Trump’s “ambush” of the SA team. By definition, ambushes are unexpected. But you’d have to be remarkably complacent not to have anticipated this particular ambush.</p><p>After all, Trump had for months made fanciful claims of white genocide. He had then granted refugee status to 59 Afrikaners.</p><p>What exactly was then unexpected about being sat down to watch a montage of news clips showing black South African political leaders, mainly Julius Malema but also Jacob Zuma, threatening to exterminate whites?</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> ‘WhatsApp about Gauteng and American Embassy shutdown fake and misleading’, police say </p> </p> </p><p>Ramaphosa was pole-axed. He sat squirming uncomfortably, eyes mostly averted, only sneaking momentary glances at the public relations disaster unfolding. The body language was not good: he repeatedly mopped his face; his mouth alternated between an unfortunate smirk and an embarrassed rictus.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ:WATCH: Donald Trump ambushes Cyril Ramaphosa in Oval Office</p><p>Was it trepidation? Maybe Ramaphosa was waiting for the footage of him, as ANC party president, claiming at a 2017 rally, “the land must be returned without any payment or compensation”. He could, of course, have escaped quite easily.</p><p>The leap to safety would be for him at the end of the video to firmly address Trump with something resoundingly statesmanlike. Something along the lines of “I agree with you Mister President that these are terrible threats but they are unfortunately protected Monday 10 26 May 2025 by the constitution.</p><p>However, I and my ANC colleagues reject such divisive sentiments and will henceforth vigorously enforce the hate speech prohibitions that exist in our law.” Instead, Ramaphosa sat slack-jawed and dull-eyed.</p><p> </p><p>The best he could eventually manage was the limp-wristed response that the violence promised on the videos was “not government policy”, and that whites were not being “disproportionately” killed. It beggars belief that the SA team didn’t anticipate this political theatre.</p><p>Surely, by now, the Trump modus operandi is obvious? Trump takes a real issue. He then exaggerates it and portrays himself as the caped avenger who’ll pull down the wrath of God on the perpetrators unless the matter is resolved. So, when Ramaphosa said he thought that the visit had gone “very well”, he may be right.</p><p>After enduring the ritual humiliation, SA may well end up with a workmanlike compromise. Such a deal could conceivably involve Ramaphosa taking the kind of leaderly actions to reassure minorities, as well as easing race quotas in employment and softening our anti-US posture.</p><p>Possibly the US would in return encourage the investment and grant the tariff breaks we need. Any agreement remotely along those lines would be a no-brainer that we should grab with both hands. But the problem is that even if Ramaphosa wanted to, it is by no means clear that he could sell even such a mild deal to his party.</p><p> </p><p>So there are at least two possible reasons why Ramaphosa failed to seize the opportunity provided by his Oval Office debut to be a statesman rather than a petty politician.</p><p>One is because he is not the great conciliator that he portrays himself to be. Photo: iStock .</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Livestock farmers warn they may soon go out of business if the government does not support those affected by the preventative measures for foot and mouth disease (FMD).</p><p>But the agriculture department blamed farmers for not adhering to the preventive measures. Hennie de Wet, a farmer based in Nquthu near Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), said the FMD preventative measures, introduced during the FMD outbreak in 2021, include the prohibition of slaughtering and transporting livestock.</p>Affected provinces<p>The most affected provinces were KZN, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Eastern Cape. Yesterday, De Wet spoke of farmers’ frustration.</p><p>“Every time a farmer wants to sell or slaughter cattle, they need to go through a long assessment process,” he said.</p><p>“There is a backlog for the assessment process. It is also expensive and can cost more than R21 000. It is paid for by the farmer without any state assistance.”</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Why Cyril Ramaphosa failed in the US </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Eastern Cape farms in quarantine after outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease</p><p> </p><p> </p>Transport ban<p>He said the government could lift the transport ban and related measures because the FMD strain in the country was not dangerous.</p><p>“One member of parliament asked how many people or livestock had been killed by the disease, and there was none,” said De Wet.</p><p>He said farmers illegally transported animals during the night and sold them in other provinces. He said the situation had forced him to sell his herd of 700 cattle.</p><p>“After realising that the situation was getting out of control, I decided to sell my cattle,” he said. “It was lucky that I found somebody to buy the cattle. With the restrictions in place, farmers are struggling to access the market.</p><p> </p><p>“There are farmers I know who are failing to pay employees.” Dr Frikkie Maré, chief executive officer of the Red Meat Producers Organisation, said FMD was a state-controlled disease, and the industry can only make recommendations to the government.</p><p>“The government must realise that its responsibility does not end with disease control, but also extends to the businesses and individuals affected by the measures.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Foot-and-mouth hits red meat</p>Stock losses<p>Asked how much had been lost since the transport restriction was implemented, Maré said it was a huge amount. TLU SA, which represents farmers, called on the government to implement a programme to help affected farmers keep operating.</p><p> </p><p>TLU SA general manager Bennie van Zyl said the prolonged restrictions on the movement of livestock threatened to bring farming operations to a halt.</p><p>He said producers at the grassroots level are in a dire situation: “They cannot take their animals to auctions, feedlots or abattoirs, which directly impacts their cash flow needed for essentials.</p><p>“Producers are left without any access to markets, while no alternative plans have been implemented. We are economically destroying farmers.” He said the government has failed to fulfil its legally mandated responsibilities.</p>Livestock movement<p>An example of this was the absence of roadblocks to monitor livestock movement in affected areas. “This failure shifts the burden to agriculture, as farmers and organisations are now forced to monitor movement themselves through private camera systems,” said Van Zyl.</p><p> </p><p>“These systems have been established and are being monitored without state contribution. “The agricultural sector is expected to manage them and bear responsibility for a duty that legally rests with the authorities.”</p><p>Zyl said the two organisations had taken their concerns to Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen, yet nothing had been done to minimise the impact of the restrictions. He added the organisations had appealed to the government to implement a disaster management programme to enable producers to continue farming operations, but to no avail.</p><p>“The state must act urgently to protect the sustainability of farming, especially where it concerns food production and job security,” he said.</p>Veterinary services<p>Dipepeneneng Serage, of the national department of agriculture, said animal production and veterinary services would assist farmers with skills and knowledge on best farming practices and that farmers who qualify for government funding are financially assisted.</p><p> </p><p>Serage blamed farmers for not adhering to the preventative measures.</p><p>“Viral diseases do not happen by accident, but are brought by vectors. Picture: iStock </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The portfolio committee on communications and digital technologies has summoned Minister Solly Malatsi to brief parliament on the newly issued policy directives aimed at easing broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) requirements for licensing satellite services, including Elon Musk’s Starlink.</p><p>Malatsi has gazetted a policy directive on the role of equity equivalent investment programmes (EEIPs) in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector – a mechanism he said would accelerate broadband access, recognising alternatives to a 30% B-BBEE ownership legal compliance.</p><p>ALSO READ: Malatsi summoned to Parliament to explain Starlink policy directive</p>Starlink the world’s first <p>Starlink is the world’s first and largest satellite constellation, using a low earth orbit to deliver broadband internet, capable of supporting streaming online gaming and video calls – and the company which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX.</p><p>While the Institute of Race Relations has lauded Malatsi’s decision to direct the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) to “urgently consider” regulatory changes in the telecoms sector as “a step towards shifting South Africa to a pro-growth footing”, political economists have warned of repercussions in ditching B-BBEE requirements.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Chance for people to really benefit </p> </p> </p><p>Political economist Sam Koma said there was a coincidence between the release of this policy direction and businessman Johann Rupert’s remarks made during last week’s visit to the White House by the SA delegation.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“It is incumbent upon the minister to assure the public that his policy direction is not tailored to suit the demands made by Starlink in seeking exemptions from the 30% B-BBEE ownership.”</p>MPs to weigh in <p>Malatsi said the proposals had been some time in the making and had nothing to do with the White House visit.</p><p>“It’s also up to the MPs to weigh up the policy options made by the minister and decide which option will best serve the public interest,” said Koma.</p><p>He said a careful reading of Malatsi’s policy direction on EEIPs in the ICT sector made it “clear what the gazetted policy seeks to provide – consistency in the ICT in as far as the participation of multi-national companies is concerned and the application of B-BBEE”.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Starlink gets 10-year satellite internet licence in Lesotho</p><p>“As things stand, the current policy practice requires the acquisition of a licence to be based on the 30% shares to be in the hands of historically disadvantaged individuals,” said Koma.</p>American companies in SA<p>Independent political analyst Sandile Swana said there were 22 American companies with a presence in South Africa, which included Microsoft, Amazon and Ford, having invested over several years in the country.</p><p>“American firms have, over the years, complied with B-BBEE laws in South Africa. There is a law in our country, the Electronic Communications Act, governing the telecoms sector, which established and continues to govern Icasa,” said Swana.</p><p> </p><p>“The law states clearly that there must be B-BBEE shareholding in any licence. Existing telecoms companies – whether Vodacom or MTN – are forced to have black shareholders.</p><p>“Should it wish to invest in South Africa, Elon Musk’s Starlink will be forced to operate under Icasa governance rules.”</p>EEIPs<p>However, according to Mteto Nayti, the former MD of Microsoft SA, who now chairs BSG, the idea of EEIPS has been implemented previously.</p><p>In a post on X yesterday, Mteto wrote: “I signed one of the first equity equivalent deals in the ICT sector worth about R500 million. The equity equivalent deal paved the way for more than R25 billion that Microsoft has invested in SA under the leadership of Lillian Barnard.</p><p> </p><p>“The R25 billion direct investment by Microsoft was about building cloud data centres in SA. In the process, creating youth employment and buying materials from local businesses. It was never about dishing that money to individuals.”</p>Julius Malema’s view<p>EFF leader Julius Malema said Starlink should not be allowed to operate in South Africa without adhering to B-BBEE laws.</p><p>“[Government] wants to relax B-BBEE laws for Musk to operate in South Africa. This is according to two reports presented to MPs serving on parliament’s standing committee on public accounts (Scopa).</p>Those involved in the lottery probe <p>Senior Special Investigating Unit (SIU) officials presented a pared-down progress report with highlights of their investigation to the committee. MPs were also given a more comprehensive 128- page version, which went into detail about what they had uncovered and named people involved.</p><p>Among those named and referred to the NPA for prosecution are several former National Lotteries Commission (NLC) executives and board members, who oversaw the NLC at a time when it was overwhelmed by corruption.</p><p>The list of names, headed “key players in the lottery corruption”, is broken into two: “internal players” and “external players”, consisting of people the SIU has described as “kingpins”, and family and business associates.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Scandal! star Nolwazi Ngubeni granted bail in fraud case </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: SIU is not done with NLC yet, as more corruption allegations emerge</p><p> </p><p> </p>Key players <p>The SIU identified four executives and board members as key players in the looting.</p>Former NLC COO Phillemon Letwaba: Last week, Letwaba was included in a Special Tribunal judgment that froze R25 million in assets acquired using plundered lottery funds.Former NLC board chair Alfred Nevhutanda: He used lottery funds to buy a Rolls-Royce and a luxury mansion, among other things.Former NLC board member William Huma: The Special Tribunal recently interdicted Huma from receiving R10 million from the sale of his Waterkloof mansion, which was paid for with lottery money.Former NLC Commissioner Thabang Mampane: Her weekend home on a golf estate was paid for with lottery money.R2 billion in fraud and corruption<p>Members of Scopa listened in silence as the SIU explained in detail how they were currently investigating R2 billion in fraud and corruption.</p><p>But they were told this amount could increase substantially as the SIU was continually receiving new information about further lottery corruption.</p><p>“This amount keeps increasing because we are currently receiving new tip-offs about corruption, as well as uncovering more and more during our investigations,” SIU chief operating officer Leonard Lekgetho told MPs.</p><p> </p><p>Gijimani Jim Skosana, an ANC MP, after hearing the extent of the looting, said: “They were very relaxed, just like they were scooping ice-cream.”</p><p>So far, the Special Tribunal and the Asset Forfeiture Unit have successfully frozen properties, vehicles and pensions worth almost R122 million.</p><p>ALSO READ: Lotto heist: SIU almost done with second phase of R1.4bn NLC corruption probe</p>Investigation <p>The SIU has completed two phases of its investigation, with phase one involving R280 million and R247 million in phase two. It has also delivered its first report to President Cyril Ramaphosa. Picture: Michel Bega</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The 10th ANC Peter Mokaba regional elective conference in Limpopo has cost the region more than R8 million, sources say</p><p>The cost is the largest spending for a regional conference in the province since democracy in 1994.</p>How ANC spent the money <p>A source within the regional executive committee, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, said the money was spent on food and beverages for friends of the ANC from both the province and national leadership, sound systems, venues, transport, media, accommodation, decoration and banners, among many other items.</p><p>“We had to book two venues for accommodation. All this was paid for by the ANC.</p><p>“Others alleged generous service providers from around the province and Gauteng offered to pay the bill.</p><p>“You know the ANC has no money. Others are sleeping in thatch and mud houses years after empty promises from government to build us RDP houses.</p><p> </p><p>“Roads are riddled with potholes, water is scarce in villages and townships while litter fills our streets.</p><p>“This money could have been best used to change the lives of our people in communities,” said Christopher Matlou of the Blouberg subregion.</p><p>The conference elected Polokwane mayor John Mpe as chair for the region for a third term, Masilo Edward Paya as deputy chair, Lesiba Matsemela as secretary, Kholofelo Lehong as deputy secretary and Merriam Molala as regional treasurer.</p><p>ANC spokesperson for the region Adolph Rapetsoa would neither confirm, nor deny the cost of the conference. Picture: Issam Zerrok/AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Having shone in the first half of the year, Akani Simbine says he will head back to training at his European base in Italy as he sets his sights on the second half of the season, including the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September.</p><p>Simbine, 31, won his third straight Diamond League race over the 100m distance in Rabat on Sunday night, stopping the clock at 9.95 seconds.</p><p>He outclassed a strong field, with African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya taking second place in 10.05 and former world champion Fred Kerley of the United States settling for third position in 10.07.</p><p>Simbine ran under 10 seconds for the fourth time this year, remaining unbeaten over his specialist distance and extending his lead in the Diamond League series.</p>‘I feel confident’<p>Having already secured medals at the World Indoor Championships and the World Athletics Relays this season, the South African speedster said he would take a short break from racing in order to focus on preparing for the second half of the 2025 campaign.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Bayanda Walaza aims for faster times after breaking SA junior record </p> </p> </p><p>“I feel great, I feel confident, and I am happy that I could take the win today and that I can finish this month strong and healthy,” Simbine said.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Another sub 10 in the bag, so slowly we go down in time which is really great. Picture: Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Few politicians have had the kind of influence and staying power Tony Leon, 68, has.</p><p>He’s been there, done that and got the T-shirt more than once. He also notched up a few firsts; most notably helping bury the National Party and turning a small party into the official opposition.</p><p>None of them small feats. While Leon has not held public office in years, when politicians need to call a friend, they call him.</p>Leon back in politics <p>Last year, he found himself back in the thick of things.</p><p>The DA asked him to help with the negotiations that led to the formation of the government of national unity.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> SA has a winning hand in Tony Leon </p> </p> </p><p>It was a high-stakes moment in South Africa’s political history – one that required experience, institutional memory and calmness under pressure.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“You’re making big decisions with imperfect information and not enough time,” Leon said.</p><p>“There was propaganda coming from all sides and we weren’t even sure a deal was possible. But the alternative to a bad deal would have been disastrous.”</p><p>ALSO READ: ANC ‘outsmarted’ in GNU, says analyst</p>To be back in the game was never the plan<p>Although he never planned on returning to the fray, he understood the gravity of the situation, he said.</p><p> </p><p>“This wasn’t a choice between good and bad. It was between a mediocre deal and a catastrophic alternative.</p><p>“If things had gone the other way, the economy would have taken an irreparable hit.”</p><p>Leon kept a detailed diary throughout the process, something he had not done before.</p><p>“Not just fragments or scraps. I wrote everything down this time,” he said.</p><p> </p>New Book <p>It’s all captured in Being There, his new book which reads like a backstage pass to the past 30 years or so of South African politics.</p><p>Leon’s role in shaping the DA and, by extension, the country’s political environment, stretches back to a different era.</p><p>When he was 18 years old, he was already actively involved as an organiser for the Progressive Party just before he studied law at Wits University.</p><p>Leon’s political career started pre-1994, when he was elected to represent Bellevue in Joburg as a councillor.</p><p> </p><p>The Progressives at that time became the Progressive Federal Party – PFP.</p><p>It was, as he described it, a time when being persistent about service delivery and getting things done could yield results.</p><p>“I was attentive and I was probably a bit of a pain to the municipal officials. But if you wrote to them, they responded. Problems got sorted out,” he said.</p><p>ALSO READ: SA politics is not for sissies</p><p> </p>First parliamentary seat <p>He went on to win his first parliamentary seat in 1989, for Houghton by a margin of just 39 votes.</p><p>“Had I lost, I would probably have stayed in law. I might have been richer, but I would not have had the same depth of experience.”</p><p>Eventually the PFP became the Democratic Party (DP) when the Independent Party and the National Democratic Movement joined hands under then leader Zach de Beer</p><p>Before Leon assumed the leadership role at the DP, he was actively involved in shaping South Africa’s democracy at the multiparty Convention for a Democratic South Africa negotiations before the 1994 elections.</p>Leon led the Democratic Party <p>As Nelson Mandela became president, Leon led the Democratic Party into a new era, most notably at first through the Fight Back campaign of 1999, a slogan that became shorthand for his brand of combative, unapologetic opposition politics.</p><p>Under his watch, the DP rocketed from a marginal voice in parliament to the official opposition.</p><p>Then, 14 months or so later. the DP consumed the remnants of the National Party and became the DA.</p><p>“It was hard, hard graft,” he said. “We worked very hard and often for very mediocre or suboptimal rewards. But you do what you’ve got to do.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Maimane slams Tony Leon for calling him ‘an experiment that went wrong</p>Leaving politics <p>After leading the DA for seven years, he stepped down in 2007, leaving active politics at 50.</p><p>“I had done everything I could do. I wasn’t going to hang around until I got pushed. Knowing when to leave is a very underrated political skill.”</p><p>He said politicians often have large egos, but there are checks and balances.</p><p>“Every politician’s a narcissist. Some more than others. I’m not immune, but if you’re in it just for the press coverage or a job title, your career won’t last.”</p><p>For Leon, looking back, the formation of the DA was one of the most consequential moves of his career.</p><p>“We took a splintered opposition and turned it into something that could actually hold the government to account,” he said.</p><p>“It wasn’t perfect but without it, we’d have a very different country, that would be all the poorer for it, today.”</p>What happened after politics? <p>After politics, he became South Africa’s ambassador to Argentina, cofounded the communications firm Resolve, and started writing columns for news organisations and books.</p><p>He also picked up a regular side gig lecturing on cruise ships. “You don’t make money from it, but you get to see incredible places. I’ve been from the Antarctic to New Zealand,” he said.</p><p>He reads voraciously, walks his dogs daily and tries to stay active.</p><p>“My wife gave me a cushion once with a picture of our dachshund and the words, ‘Be the person your dog thinks you are’. But Leon’s been an ambassador before, so he knows the game. Again, it takes a brave president to fish outside of the current pool of cadres and soft-living cronies.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>None of them can plaster a pothole, let alone measure up in geopolitical heavy lifting. So, that in my view, it was really good.”</p>The fight over Starlink<p>While Ramaphosa said bending local employment equity laws for Starlink was not discussed, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi recently gazetted regulations that allow the company to operate here without adhering to BEEE policies.</p><p>SA-born billionaire Elon Musk is the founder of the internet service and has been a vocal critic of the policies.</p><p>READ MORE: Malatsi’s move ‘a shameless sellout to American oligarchs Musk and Trump’</p><p> </p><p>Speaking over the weekend, EFF leader Julius Malema said Starlink should not be allowed to work in South Africa without playing by exisiting rules.</p><p>“[Government] wants to relax B-BBEE laws for Musk to operate in South Africa. Picture: Lefty Shivambu/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>It’s now crunch time for the Bulls, Sharks and Stormers as the United Rugby Championship reaches the playoff stage this week.</p><p>Everything that has gone before in the 2024/25 season will be forgotten as the three South African teams in the top eight vie for a place in the semi-finals and then the final.</p><p>This weekend, the Bulls, who finished second on the points table after the round robin stage, take on Edinburgh at Loftus at 1.30pm on Saturday, while at 6.30pm the Sharks, who finished third overall, host Munster in Durban.</p><p>The Stormers though are first-up on Friday, at 8.35pm, when they clash with the defending champions, Glasgow Warriors, in Scotland. John Dobson’s team, who were inaugural winners of the URC three seasons ago, finished fifth after their 18 games in the league phase.</p><p>The other quarter-final is between Leinster and Scarlets at 4pm on Saturday, in Dublin.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Who are the likely SA URC Player of the Season contenders? </p> </p> </p><p>All eight teams go into their matches this weekend having had this last weekend off, for the European Champions and Challenge Cup finals to be played, so they will be fresh and rejuvenated after a long URC campaign.</p><p> </p><p> </p>Winning run<p>The three South Africans teams will all be confident ahead of their clashes.</p><p>The Bulls have not lost in their last six matches in the URC, so Jake White and his charges will be full of confidence. They have beaten Dragons and Cardiff at home, Glasgow and Munster away and Zebre and Leinster at home. Their last defeat was back on March 1, against the Stormers (19-16).</p><p>In their round robin match against Edinburgh this season the Bulls won 22-16 in what was their first match of their URC season, in late September at Loftus.</p><p>The Sharks, too, will be confident against Munster, winners of the title two seasons ago. John Plumtree’s men have beaten Scarlets and Ospreys at home, and Ulster and Edinburgh away. They also narrowly lost against Leinster (7-10).</p><p> </p><p>The Stormers have also had a good time recently, beating Cardiff, the Dragons, Benetton and Connacht at home to get them into the top five. The solitary point is all Binder has to show for his last four starts, after crashing out twice at the French Grand Prix.</p><p>Binder is still 14th in the title race on 34 points, a country mile behind leader Marc Marquez (196). Marx Marquez finished third at Silverstone behind Marco Bezzecchi and Johann Zarco to stretch his champions lead over this brother Alex Marquez to 24 points.</p>No luck for Brad Binder<p>Things could have turned out very differently for Binder had the main race not been red-flagged following a collision between Franco Morbidelli and Aleix Espargaro.. He made a great start to move from 19th on the grid to 12th as the Marquez brothers crashed out within the first three laps. The pair restarted on new bikes and Binder could not repeat his heroics at the second go and never ran higher than 12th.</p><p>“A tough weekend for us here in Silverstone. Qualifying was difficult. We didn’t finish the sprint. We need to figure things out a little bit and step-up for Aragon.”</p>KTM loses more ground<p>What should be of great concern to KTM is that other manufacturers are catching up with Ducati at a much faster rate than they are. The multi-disciplinary team successfully located and apprehended the suspect in Giyani CBD,” said Mashaba.</p><p>Following his arrest, the suspect was transported to Giyani SAPS, where he was formally processed and detained. There’s just no line to follow, and by the time a few cars are through, the route changes completely. We were fighting with the world’s best, and it’s clear we’re moving in the right direction.”</p><p>Teammates Botterill and Murphy also rebounding strongly after a tough start to the event. They produced another clean run to finish 12th on the final stage. </p><p>“We had a really successful weekend overall,” said Botterill. “We managed two 1-2 stage finishes as a team, which was fantastic. The pace is definitely there; we just need to cut out the small mistakes and learn how to better manage the road order strategy in these world-level events.”</p><p>Reflecting on the rally’s, Botterill noted: “Nobody won a stage starting in the top 10 this week. You really want to be starting fifth or sixth every day, but it’s hard to get that balance right. The guys who’ve been doing this for a while know how to play the game. Gen. Anthony Aberin oversaw the launch of the police visibility program at the NCRPO Grandstand in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig City.</p><p>The NCRPO, in a statement, said it deployed 21,532 personnel to boost police visibility in Metro Manila in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s call to ensure that police presence is constant, credible, and felt in all communities.</p><p>It added that 12,539 officers were assigned to beat patrols, 2,989 to administrative patrol duties, 2,944 to mobile patrols, 1,794 to fixed visibility posts and outposts, 629 to checkpoints, 344 to border control points, and 293 to Metro Manila Rail Transit and Light Rail Transit stations.</p><p>The NCRPO said 240 force multipliers, composed of trained community volunteers and partner stakeholders, will support frontline operations by serving as eyes and ears on the ground.</p><p>“NCRPO responds decisively to the call of the President and the SILG (Secretary of Interior and Local Government) for a more proactive, intensified, and strategic police visibility,” Aberin said.</p><p>“We will deliver to the public a police force that can be seen, heard and felt, not only to deter crime but more importantly, to instill the feeling of safety and security in Metro Manila.”</p><p>Remulla reaffirmed the government’s direction to establish familiarity and security between law enforcers and the public.</p><p>He echoed President Marcos’s message from his podcast: “People should see police officers walking around regularly. (PNA photo by Joan Bondoc)</p> <p>MANILA –Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero and Senator Grace Poe on Monday called on the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to fix the implementation gaps in the No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP), stressing the need for fairness, efficiency, and transparency in traffic enforcement.</p><p>In a news release, Escudero raised concerns over delays in the delivery of Notices of Violation (NOVs) and called for digital alternatives to the current snail-mail process.</p><p>He said motorists deserve a faster and more accessible appeal mechanism.</p><p>“Lumalabas na matagal ang buong proseso at via snail mail pa ang pagpapadala ng NOVs. Maaaring pag dumating na ang NOV ay hindi na matandaan ng motorista ang umanong violation (It appears that the entire process is taking too long, and the Notices of Violation are still being sent via snail mail. By the time a motorist receives the NOV, they might no longer remember the alleged violation),” Escudero said.</p><p>He urged the MMDA to use emails when available and fix flawed traffic signages and lane markings that often become the basis for violations.</p><p>“Enforcement must be consistent and evidence must be indisputable.
