Picture: Toyota Gazoo Racing</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Stage 4 of the South African Safari Rally delivered a day of redemption and reward for Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa, with Saood Variawa and Francois Cazalet claiming a commanding stage win and teammates Guy Botterill and Dennis Murphy (#211) claiming the final step on the podium.</p>Longest stage done<p>The 693 km route, the longest of the rally, included a 470 km road section and a 224 km competitive stage around the greater Sun City region. </p><p>The looped route took competitors across a mix of fast-flowing bushveld roads, rocky sections, sandy tracks and open savannah.</p><p>Despite not feeling 100%, teenager Variawa produced a masterful drive to win his first stage of this year’s event.</p><p>“We actually had a malfunction with the torque meter, which caused us to lose a lot of power. So, in the last 100 km we pushed the car to the limit, knowing we didn’t have full power. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Stage 3: No let up for Toyota Gazoo Racing on South African Safari </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Stage 3: No let up for Toyota Gazoo Racing on South African Safari</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“We managed to hold the lead and I’m super happy – with the team, the car, myself, my navigator – everything played out well today,” said Variawa.</p><p>Variawa’s time of two hours 09 min 05 sec was enough to secure the stage win by 58 seconds over the X-Raid Mini of Guillaume De Mévius and Xavier Panseri.</p><p>For Botterill and Murphy in the second Toyota GR Hilux EVO, stage four brought a further confidence boost.</p><p>“We made a few mistakes early on which cost us time, but in the second half of the stage, Dennis and I were absolutely flat-out trying to make up ground. We had no idea where we stood, but I knew we were pushing. To finish third, considering where we were this morning, I’m really pleased.”</p><p> </p>One stage left<p>Their performance saw them cross the line one min 19 sec behind their Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa teammates.</p><p>While the individual stage results were cause for celebration, the overall classification remains tightly packed. </p><p>Variawa and Cazalet moved up to 12th overall, 14 min 23sec behind the leaders. She was not afraid, she was not a coward and she was courageous,” Ramaphosa said.</p>Gertrude Shope<p>Earlier this week, former ANC Women’s League president Gertrude Shope also died.</p><p> </p><p>The veteran, also known as Ma Shope, died on Thursday at the age of 99.</p><p>Shope was an uMkhonto weSizwe leader and the first president of the ANC Women’s League following its relaunch in 1991. Picture: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Kaizer Chiefs will not play in the MTN8 for the second season in a row after a goalless draw with Polokwane City at FNB Stadium in their final Betway Premiership match of the season. </p><p>While Amakhosi have lifted the Nedbank Cup, their first trophy in a decade, this has been a miserable end to their Premiership campaign. </p>Chiefs’ Premiership misery is complete<p>Chiefs failed to win any of their last nine league matches. It remains to be seen if winning the cup is enough to keep head coach Nasreddine Nabi in his job. </p><p>As Chiefs failed to find a way past a side that had not kept a clean sheet in its last nine matches, sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr and football manager Bobby Motaung did not exactly look best pleased in the director’s box. </p><p>Nabi handed Tashreeq Morris a first start for Chiefs in over a month, but it didn’t last long.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Ncikazi proud of Pirates contribution amid uncertain future </p> </p> </p><p>Morris struggled against Polokwane City’s defence and the Chiefs coach hauled him off before half time.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Chiefs were getting more joy down City’s flanks, particularly on the right wing. In the 20th minute, Dillon Solomons broke forward and thundered a shot back off the post. Morris failed to get enough power on his header from the rebound, and City’s Kenyan ‘keeper Brian Bwire easily gathered.</p><p>Chiefs also came close to grabbing the lead on the half hour mark. Mduduzi Shabalala’s cross, was touched by Bwire straight to Inacio Miguel. But the Angolan defender, sporting his new blonde haircut, could direct the ball into an empty net.</p>City’s glorious chance<p>City were not creating much, but they did waste a glorious chance to take the lead in the 33rd minute.</p><p>Mokibelo Ramabu danced past Bradley Cross and slid a ball across the face of goal. But Bonginkosi Dlamini, arriving at the far post, somehow managed to shoot wide.</p><p> </p><p>In the 40th minute, Solomons did well to win a free kick and Cross’ delivery found Edmilson Dove. The Mozambican’s header hit the top of the crossbar and went out of play.</p><p>Nabi brought on Mfundo Vilakazi for the second half, the Chiefs youngster fresh from winning the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations with Amajita.</p><p>It was a scrappy start to the second stanza. Walid El Karti popped up at the far post to head home what could prove to be a crucial away goal for the Cairo-based side.</p>Sundowns put up lukewarm display<p>Lucas Ribeiro had given Sundowns the lead in what was a lukewarm first-leg encounter. Pyramids now hold the advantage heading into the return match in Cairo. The winner over the two legs will be crowned champions.</p><p>Downs coach Miguel Cardoso made some questionable decisions from the bench. Instead of pushing for a second goal, the Portuguese tactician adopted a conservative approach. They had two clear chances to take the lead, but Fiston Mayele squandered both.</p><p> </p><p> </p>Mayele misses<p>The Congolese striker beat the offside trap in the 16th minute, but his clever side-footed effort went inches wide of Ronwen Williams’ goal.</p><p>Two minutes later, Mayele blasted over the bar after being set up inside the box. A better connection would likely have seen him hit the back of the net, with the Sundowns defence in disarray.</p><p>Sundowns’ best chance of the opening half came from Iqraam Rayners, who did well to create space for himself before unleashing a powerful shot that was parried over the bar by Pyramids goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shenawy ten minutes into the game.</p><p>There was no sign of Sundowns’ usual free-flowing football, and the home fans took notice. The stadium announcer repeatedly urged them to keep singing as the noise levels dropped.</p><p> </p><p>Sundowns were outplayed in midfield, and Cardoso embarrassingly substituted Tashreeq Matthews for Jayden Adams eight minutes before the break in a bid to regain control.</p>A better second half<p>Whatever Cardoso said at half-time seemed to work. Sundowns began the second half on the front foot, and Ribeiro broke the deadlock nine minutes after the restart.</p><p>Following a goalmouth scramble where Pyramids failed to clear their lines, Ribeiro controlled the ball and placed it into the top corner.</p><p>Sundowns will be crowned champions on foreign soil once again if they can overturn the away-goal advantage. For many, the goal is to build a system that eventually becomes a passive income stream, requiring minimal upkeep beyond occasional ad tweaks and customer support.</p><p> </p>The challenges of dropshipping<p>Lapping added that but ease of entry comes with its own set of challenges. The simplicity of launching a dropshipping store has attracted countless new entrants, resulting in a saturated and fiercely competitive landscape.</p><p>“Trust and credibility are among the biggest hurdles. Consumers are naturally wary of buying from unknown websites, especially when established marketplaces like Amazon, Takealot, or Temu offer similar products with recognized brands and reliable service.”</p><p>Overcoming this scepticism requires a long-term commitment to building a brand, collecting positive reviews, and delivering excellent customer service.</p><p>“Product differentiation poses another challenge. I don’t think I would realise how good this would feel after a few struggles over the last couple of months. We have worked a lot to get where we are today.”</p><p>Last year’s winner and local hero Leclerc seemed to have done enough with seconds remaining, but was pushed into second by Norris’s late effort, denting his hopes of repeating his emotional home win last year.</p><p>Leclerc said he felt he had “more to be done” but “at the end of the day this was the best we could do. From what can easily be construed as unfair regulation to attempts to circumvent the law through policy directives not worth the paper they are written on. We look forward to receiving an explanation in Parliament”. From what can easily be…</p>— Khusela Diko🇿🇦 (@KhuselaS) May 23, 2025</p>Policy directive<p>Malatsi announced the policy direction on Friday, which provides alternatives to pave the way for the Starlink service in the country.</p><p>The proposed policy direction was published in the Government Gazette.</p><p>It provides applicants with a workaround to rules on who can acquire a licence to provide electronic communications services or to operate an electronic communications network in the Electronic Communications Act (ECA) that require a minimum of 30% shares to be in the hands of historically disadvantaged individuals.</p><p> </p><p>These regulations currently prevent companies, regardless of whether they are large international firms that typically do not sell shares to local partners, from qualifying for individual licences under the ECA, even if they can contribute to South Africa’s transformation goals through means other than traditional ownership.</p><p>ALSO READ:WATCH: Starlink not debated with Trump, Ramaphosa says</p>Transformation<p>Crucially, the statement makes it clear that new service providers, including those offering new technologies, will not be exempt from the country’s transformation obligations.</p><p>“Even if companies are not rolling out large-scale infrastructure, they will be required to make commitments that are substantive and clearly aligned with South Africa’s socio-economic development goals,” the Communications Department said.</p><p> </p>EFF rejects policy<p>The policy directive has however drawn criticism, with the EFF rejecting the announcement.</p><p>“The EFF expected this betrayal, and we have consistently warned that the Government of National Unity (GNU) is facilitating the erosion of transformation in the interests of white capital and Western imperialism,” the red berets said.</p><p>“This policy direction is unconstitutional and driven by external pressure, particularly from Elon Musk, a close ally of Donald Trump.</p><p>“As a result, the EFF will challenge this unconstitutional proposal in Parliament and explore all legal mechanisms to assert the supremacy of the Constitution and the rightful place of historically disadvantaged South Africans in the ICT sector,” the EFF said.</p><p> </p>MK party<p>MK party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said the party also “unequivocally rejects the newly gazetted regulation”.</p><p>“This gazette is not mere bureaucracy. So, who is it for? </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The camera is for film photographers who want the convenience of digital cameras, as you can store images on an SD card. Picture: Dirk Kotze/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Pumas became the second team – after Griquas in the inaugural competition last year – to finish the campaign unbeaten after they dealt the men from the Northern Cape their first defeat in the competition in the league phase a few weeks ago, and on Saturday they repeated that feat in convincing style to capture the SA Cup title on home soil.</p><p>The match got off to a bad start for Suzuki Griquas when their front ranker Cebo Dlamini was red carded for a head-on collision in the seventh minute, which meant they had to play the next 20 minutes with 14 men.</p><p>In a sign of what was to come, the Airlink Pumas scored their first try barely a minute later, when hooker Eddie Swart went over at the back of a strong maul, which was converted by Danrich Visagie.</p><p>Predictably, the men from Mpumalanga then proceeded to dominate both possession and territory, leaving the defending champions to fend off wave after wave of attack from the rampant home side.</p><p>The Pumas used their forward dominance to set up two good tries for midfielder Sango Xamlashe to take the score to 19-0 with a quarter of the opening half remaining. Picture: Michel Bega</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Not that long ago, we were made to believe by many manufacturers that electric vehicles (EVs) will soon be the be-all and end-all.</p><p>Staying true to its traditional measured approach, Toyota refused to put all its eggs into one basket. The Japanese manufacturer believed different markets will require different solutions. Apart from EVs, alternative fuels, fuel cell technology and a variety of hybrid powertrains were kept in the mix.</p><p>As the world started backtracking on its ambitious plans of an immediate all-electric future, Toyota’s approach turned out to be quite visionary. Especially in the hybrid department, which in theory is the perfect automotive evolution from internal combustion engines. And it’s something they have extensive knowledge of since the pioneering days of the Prius and the Lexus brand’s commitment to it.</p>Enter Toyota Corolla Cross <p>What really put Toyota’s hybrid technology on the map is the Toyota Corolla Cross. It would be unfair to call it the spiritual successor to the Corolla as the sedan is still alive and kicking, so let’s just say it has taken the baton as Toyota’s go-to family car. The carmaker expected it to sell well at its introduction in 2021 and its lofty sales numbers was therefore no surprise. What did come as a bit of a surprise to them was the demand for the hybrid powertrain compared to the 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine derivatives.</p><p>The Prospecton-built Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid or HEV quickly became South Africa’s best-selling new energy vehicle, a distinction it still holds on to by a country mile. Picture: Michel Bega</sub><p>After undergoing its first model update in January, The Citizen Motoring spent the last three months and over 6 000km in the Corolla Cross HEV in Xr guise. At R545 200, the Xr trim level comes at a R51 000 premium over the Xs HEV.</p><p> </p><p> </p>A hit all-round<p>The only way we can start out overall report card on the Cross is to say that everyone that drove it, absolutely loved it. And it was driven by quite a motley crew of people which included tamed racing drivers, overly cautious men and finicky women. Giving the Corolla Cross a huge thumbs-up is probably the only thing all these people will ever agree on.</p><p>Topping the list of what everyone enjoyed most about the car are ease of operation, excellent fuel economy and the comfort and space it has to offer.</p><p>The beauty of an HEV is that it is what we call a self-charging hybrid. It draws power from both a 1.8-litre petrol engine and electric motor and battery which produces a total of 90kW of power and 143Nm of torque. The power sources work seamlessly together – or on their own – to not require any input from the driver. At lower speeds it runs just on electricity powering the electric motor, when the engine kicks in it works together with the electric side and then the engine can also generate power back into the battery or run the car all on its own.</p><p>ALSO READ: PODCAST: Can updates keep Toyota Corolla Cross Chinese-proof?</p><p> </p>On-board education<p>At first the various configuration all seem a bit confusing, but a little graphic in the digital instrument cluster indicating which power goes where educates you very quickly. During start-up and pulling away there is hardly any sound as the Corolla Cross runs purely on electricity. Then you hear the engine kick in and see the two power sources sending the twist to the wheels. When you need brisk acceleration or start pushing it beyond the national limit, the internal combustion engine roars with a distinctive continuously variable transmission (CVT) sound.</p><p>The typical CVT-droning is in fact the only criticism that came up during its time with us. From mostly the tamed racing drivers.</p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/toyota-corolla-cross-xr-hev-cabin-2500x1875.jpeg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>The Corolla Cross Xr features a 10.1-inch infotainment system and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Picture: Michel Bega</sub><p>In terms of fuel consumption, we averaged an excellent 5.5 litres per 100km for the duration of the Corolla Cross’ stay with us. That includes lots of city traffic and two open road trips to Kroonstad and Durban. When you start figuring out the hybrid system and take it easier on the accelerator to use more pure electric power, inner city trips done at less than 4L/100km is not uncommon.</p><p>ALSO READ: Toyota Corolla Cross Mzansi’s most popular pre-owned hybrid</p><p> </p>Toyota Corolla Cross’ crown safe<p>The Toyota Corolla Cross will face its biggest test soon when Chery introduces the Tiggo Cross HEV locally. There is talk that it will undercut the Corolla Cross’ sticker by an attractive sum which will make it hard to ignore. A world where they had a majority, but that is not this world.</p>MK party shouldn’t be questioning leadership<p>There was once such a world, well, kind of. The guy leading the MK party was once the leader of the country. Incidentally, a lot of the things his current party is accusing the current national president of are things that he himself was accused of in his day.</p><p>And sure, a lot can be said about Ramaphosa’s leadership “failures” as will no doubt be raised in the motion when it comes, but spare a thought for where they’re coming from. What leadership has the MK party provided?</p><p>Being critical of a chaotic budgetary process but putting the JSC through the whole John Hlophe incident is probably a symptom of political dementia.</p><p>ALSO READ: ANC and DA need to learn to play nice, but can they?</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> WATCH: Malema not ‘intimidated’ by Trump’s call for his arrest </p> </p> </p><p>I could be wrong but walking into the White House to address issues directly is not exactly “total absence of leadership when the country needs it most” as the MK party would have us believe. Especially considering that they’re a pretty big trading partner. Fun story about Zuma that he won’t tell you, though: the dude was knighted as a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath back in 2010.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela rarely mentions that. Much like he will rarely mention where the country’s high unemployment came from when he’s being critical of it. It’s not like Ramaphosa is the first ever president of the ANC and, in fact, his national power as president is hardly close to that of Zuma’s, who had a significantly higher parliamentary bloc.</p>Zuma did little to fix the country<p>You can hardly believe the resolve to fix the country of people who were once in the arena and did little to fix the country, but are now crying from the sidelines.</p><p>If there is a legitimate reason for a motion of no confidence, fine, let’s have it. But a political stunt that the DA exhausted years ago? What do they expect to happen? The GNU to fall apart?</p><p>Who would they put in Ramaphosa’s place? They know as well as anybody that a motion of no confidence won’t go far at this point, even with all of the president’s failings. But I guess they need to pretend like they’ve done something significant.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Does Johannesburg really need a ‘Bomb Squad’?</p>Waste of parliament’s time<p>The country is going through some real problems — some that can be addressed by legislative intervention. But the removal of the president by a party led by those who had power and did little good with it is not exactly the best use of parliamentary time.</p><p>We’re still waiting on some dagga regulation, fixing our understanding of copyright, balancing labour rights, and so much more. How is a presidential recall by a party that doesn’t have the numbers for a recall going to do any good for the country?</p><p>Zuma’s party claims Ramaphosa has abandoned the poor and the working class. How did that fire pool work out for the working class? How about inheriting a currency that was R8 to the dollar and leaving it 33% weaker on exit? You know what else was great for the working class? That arms deal, the Guptas, and all the lovely load shedding.</p><p> </p><p>I get it. Ramaphosa is not your flavour, but before you try to tell me that he should go, maybe have a look at the guy leading you and tell me why you think he did a better job. Not only did he, together with Paul McCartney and the Beatles, seed much of rock and roll as well know it today, but Lennon’s activism showed the impact that celebrity can have on highlighting issues and agitating for change. </p><p>With wife and muse Yoko Ono, the often controversial pair dented social constructs and made history, and helped turn the tide of their time.</p><p>One To One: John & Yoko is a new film that tells this story. It has been described as loud, honest, emotional, and unlike any documentary about Lennon and Ono made before. It’s not a biography. Not a timeline. The movie is more akin to a human story seen through the fuzz of a television set.</p><p>In 1972, John Lennon was no longer a Beatle. He was a husband, a performer, an activist, and more than ever, a man trying to make sense of a world in chaos around him. Yoko Ono was by his side, not just as an inspirer, but as a creator, an artist, and equal in every way. Together they moved to Greenwich Village in New York, watched far too much American television, and tried to change the world.</p>Not rock & roll nostalgia<p>Directed by Kevin Macdonald and Sam Rice-Edwards, the documentary is not your standard trumpeting of rock & roll nostalgia. With thousands of hours of archive American television footage used, mixed with intimate and in many cases never-before-seen material from the Lennon estate, the film delivers fresh perspectives and insight. </p><p>It is not just another portrait of fame or popcorn ego-trip in fandom. It is an honest endeavour to see and feel what John and Yoko actually felt.</p>‘We filtered and refined footage to tell the story’<p>“There were two types of archives,” Rice-Edwards said. “The footage with John and Yoko, which was limited, but incredibly powerful, and then the seemingly endless material from 1972 American television. We watched everything from war coverage to daytime game shows, Nixon speeches, Coca-Cola adverts, all of it. We filtered and refined until we were left with what really told the story of that time.”</p><p>Also Read: A Million Ways To Die, NFOH reincarnated</p><p> </p><p>That window in time was politically and culturally charged. The war in Vietnam raged on. The youth vote was in play. Nixon was under scrutiny. The country was divided and Lennon, newly arrived in America, believed he could make a difference.</p><p>“They (John and Yoko) fell in with radicals, artists, and activists,” Rice-Edwards said. “There was this incredible optimism. They really thought they could change the world. But over time, they realised the world does not change as easily as you might hope. And so, they changed from global revolution to human connection, from grand gestures to smaller, more meaningful ones.”</p>Meaningful human connection<p>It was a moment on television that inspired the One to One benefit concert, the centrepiece of the film. A segment by broadcaster Geraldo Rivera about a school for children with disabilities struck a chord with both John and Yoko. </p><p>“They both had traumatic childhoods,” Rice-Edwards said. “Yoko’s daughter had been kidnapped. There was this intense emotional connection, and they wanted to do something about it.”</p><p> </p><p>The concert, which took place on 30 August 1972 at Madison Square Garden, was Lennon’s only full-length solo show ever. But it was not recorded under ideal conditions. </p><p>“Everyone working on it was apparently really high,” Rice-Edwards said. “So, the footage was chaotic, and the sound was poor. Sean Ono Lennon went back and completely reworked the audio. He took it to another level. We would hear the music as we were editing, and with every version it got better. By the time we did the final mix, it blew us away.”</p><noscript></noscript><p>The film also attempts to correct the imbalance in how Yoko has been portrayed over the years. </p><p> </p><p>“We did not feel the need to defend her,” he said. “We just let the archive speak. She is strong, creative, compassionate, and central to everything. When Sean saw the film, he said it was the most honest portrayal of his mother ever made. That meant a lot to us.”</p>Beyond politics and the rage of the time<p>Beyond the music and politics and the rage of the time, One to One is also about perspective. </p><p>“What really surprised us,” Rice-Edwards said, “was how much 1972 looked like now. The environment, race, gender, immigration, populist leaders, culture wars. It is all there. In a strange way, stepping back into that world tells us something urgent about the one we are in now.”</p><p>One to One: John & Yoko screens exclusively in IMAX at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas. 3155228	有图 <p> If you want to borrow money from now on, your overdraft will be included in your debts to assess your creditworthiness. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Overdraft-credit-score.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>While some South Africans banks have notified their customers, not everybody knows yet of the recent change in South Africa’s credit reporting system, where banks are now required to report overdrafts if consumers are overdrawn by more than R500 for a period of 30 days.</p><p>This provision of the National Credit Act came into effect on 1 March 2025 and represents a significant shift in how your creditworthiness is assessed, Chris Coetzee, CEO of FinFix, says.</p><p>“While this change brings some positive outcomes, it also introduces challenges that could have far-reaching consequences for consumers as well as the broader credit industry.”</p><p>He warns that by including overdraft usage in credit bureau reports, affordability assessments will become more accurate.</p><p>“In the past, overdrafts were often excluded from these calculations unless you voluntarily disclosed it. This meant that lenders were sometimes working with incomplete information when assessing whether a borrower could afford additional credit.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Thinking of buying your first home, here are five key issues to consider </p> </p> </p><p>“With overdrafts now included, credit providers can better evaluate a consumer’s true financial position, reducing the risk of over-indebtedness. Credit providers will have a clearer picture of a consumer’s financial habits, which may help prevent reckless lending practices. It also encourages consumers to be more mindful of their spending and borrowing behaviour.”</p><p>Knowing that your overdraft usage will now be reported may encourage consumers to manage their finances more carefully. Overdrafts, which were previously seen as ‘invisible’ debt, will now carry weight in credit assessments. Consumers may be motivated to reduce reliance on overdrafts and focus on budgeting or seeking financial advice to avoid negative credit listings.”</p><p> </p><p>He says credit providers will now also be able to assess risk more accurately, leading to more sustainable lending practices. “This could result in fewer defaults and a healthier credit market overall. Overdraft usage will now be factored into affordability calculations, potentially reducing the amount of credit they are eligible for.</p><p>Coetzee says credit-reliant individuals, particularly those who frequently use payday loans or temporary credit facilities, may face financial strain if they can no longer access these options. This could lead to a cycle of financial distress if they cannot find alternative solutions.”</p><p> </p><p>Unfortunately, he points out, there will also be some unintended consequences for financially vulnerable consumers.</p><p>“Low-income earners or those living payday-to-payday are more likely to rely on overdrafts to cover basic expenses. Reporting overdraft usage could disproportionately affect these groups, as their financial struggles will now be more visible to credit providers.</p><p>“These consumers may see their credit scores decline, making it harder to access affordable credit. They may turn to informal or unregulated lenders, which could expose them to higher interest rates and predatory practices.”</p><p>ALSO READ: How to build a strong credit score to unlock financial freedom</p><p> </p>Be careful how you use your overdraft<p>However, Coetzee says, this could also lead to potential misinterpretation of many South Africans’ overdraft usage.</p><p>“Not all overdraft usage indicates financial distress. Some consumers use overdrafts strategically, such as for short-term cash flow management. However, frequent or prolonged overdraft usage could be misinterpreted as a sign of poor financial health.</p><p>“Credit providers may place undue weight on overdraft usage, penalising consumers who are otherwise financially stable but use overdrafts as a convenience tool.”</p><p>He says if overdraft usage is reported negatively, such as an overdue balance, it could harm consumers’ credit scores. “This is especially concerning for those who are unaware of the change and continue to use overdrafts as they did before. A lower credit score could limit your access to affordable credit options, insurance products and even employment opportunities in certain sectors.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: The link between your money mindset and your credit score</p>Staying informed about your credit<p>What can consumers do to stay informed about their credit? Coetzee says with overdrafts now being reported to credit bureaus, consumers must stay informed about their credit status.</p><p>“Request your free annual credit report from the major credit bureaus to ensure accuracy and address any discrepancies. If you frequently use your overdraft, consider creating a budget to manage your expenses more effectively. Look for ways to cut unnecessary costs or increase your income to avoid dipping into your overdraft.”</p><p>He says if you struggle to manage your debt, it is a good idea to consult a certified debt counsellor. “Debt counselling can help you to restructure your debt, negotiate with creditors and create a sustainable repayment plan.</p><p>“Consolidating them into a single loan with a lower interest rate could make repayments more manageable.
