3156227	有图 <p> If you were a consumer of international media, you would have wondered the next day if their reporters had seen the same Trump and Ramaphosa showdown. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/ramaphosa-trump-1-1-1200x753-1.webp" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Pcture: Jim Watson / AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Many sports lovers make a point of getting the papers – or logging onto their favourite news sites – the day after a game to reaffirm what they watched less than 12 hours before. </p><p>It’s a bizarre phenomenon, but it’s part of the burden that fans shoulder, including – for some – an obsessive desire to find out the minutiae of their sports stars’ lives from their pre-match rituals to their innermost thoughts on anything from Covid to the Cup final. </p><p>Sometimes though, you’ll pick up the paper the next day and wonder if the sports reporter watched the same game that you did. </p><p>There’s a huge gulf between what we think we see – and what we think others see. But it’s not just sport that gets this treatment. </p><p>Now that US President Donald Trump has rendered Oval Office meetings with visiting presidents into something like a spin-off series of The Apprentice, there would have been many South Africans who watched the Wednesday night televised meeting between Trump and President Cyril Ramaphosa to find out if their eyes had deceived them or not. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Ramaphosa played the long game with Trump </p> </p> </p><p>If you were a consumer of international media, you would have wondered the next day if their reporters had seen the same show. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>If you had delved into the cesspits of social media, you would have been depressed, confused or strangely buoyed, depending on your algorithmic bias. </p><p>ALSO READ: SA must growl back at global bullies like Trump</p><p>South African media were more nuanced, as you would hope, with some a lot better than others. </p><p>It’s a feat of modern communications – and says more than we need to know about the comprehension levels of our neighbours, friends and family – that, to mangle Winston Churchill, so much could be spun by so few. </p><p> </p><p>There was very little middle ground; the meeting was declared a victory by the CR haters and a massive triumph by Cupcake lovers. </p><p>To be fair, the bar had been set low after the televised February mauling of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. </p><p>Our championship golfers lined up the realpolitik putts they needed to, while EFF leader Julius Malema’s bête noir Johann Rupert chimed in with a contribution that was simultaneously fêted and condemned. </p><p>So, who won? South African President Cyril Ramaphosa meets Donald Trump on Wednesday amid tensions over Washington’s resettlement of white Afrikaners that the US president claims are the victims of “genocide.” (Photo by Jim WATSON / AFP)</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>South Africa’s detractors have often described our country as the crime capital of the world. </p><p>And, in their mission to reset frosty bilateral ties with Washington, President Cyril Ramaphosa and his team took time, one after the other, painting a picture of a crime-riddled society that is simply too much of a high risk to invest in. </p><p>Team SA was attempting to debunk the AfriForum-led lie of genocide against the Afrikaner community, especially farmers. </p><p>But in that turbocharged performance, the president and his team unfortunately ended up shooting themselves in the foot, drawing a picture of pervasive crime for which they asked their host, US President Donald Trump, for technological assistance to curb it. </p><p>Violence and crime against the Afrikaner community was always going to be high on the agenda during Ramaphosa’s meeting with his unpredictable US counterpart. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Here are the most dangerous suburbs in Pretoria </p> </p> </p><p>Ramaphosa was armed with credible players in his team to dispel the Afrikaner genocide myth. However, in the sudden accentuation of SA’s crime epidemic in general, in attempting to counter the false narrative of Afrikaner farmer genocide, our president revealed that SA’s crime was not discriminatory. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Why Cyril Ramaphosa failed in the US</p><p>We all have endured a fair share of it, he and his team argued, without coercion. </p><p>Afrikaner billionaire Johann Rupert, a member of the Ramaphosa delegation and a close friend of Trump, added two very crucial, but equally self-harming details about crime in SA. </p><p>The Cape Flats in the Western Cape, which is under the governance of Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen’s DA party, experiences the bulk of their crime from gang warfare. </p><p> </p><p>Second, according to the highly esteemed Rupert, the wine farmlands experience most of the crime from marauding illegal foreigners. </p><p>Now, what this means is that the illegal foreigners are untraceable. Unless caught in the act, there is no way to investigate their whereabouts. </p><p>They have no fingerprints in the home affairs database, no source revealing who they are, their age, gender, how long they’ve been in the country and what else they do for a living other than steal, kill and maim. </p><p>ALSO READ: ‘WhatsApp about Gauteng and American Embassy shutdown fake and misleading’, police say</p><p> </p><p>In front of the president and a few of his Cabinet ministers, Rupert was telling the White House and international community at large that SA’s borders are porous and immigration systems accordingly in shambles. </p><p>The border patrol authorities are not winning against illegal fence-jumpers – others go under the fence, or simply through it – and the picture Rupert painted was of a chaotic free-for-all. </p><p>Trump recently sent packing dozens of Venezuelan gang members, declaring them undesirable aliens in the US. </p><p>Rupert painted a picture of the Western Cape that is infested with gang wars that constantly claim innocent lives and have turned life into hell for the multitudes. </p><p> </p><p>Ramaphosa was determined to strike a trade deal that involved all sorts of assistance, including crime fighting technology. Pictures: AFP </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>President Cyril Ramaphosa says his recent visit to the US to meet with his counterpart, President Donald Trump, came at a time when relations between the two countries were under “increasing strain”, mainly due to disinformation.</p><p>Ramaphosa made the remarks in his weekly newsletter, From the Desk of the President, on Monday.</p><p>The president met with Trump last Wednesday. He was joined by four ministers, renowned businessman Johann Rupert and golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.</p><p>Trump proved to be a political rottweiler for Afrikaners and white farmers and shifted the focus from what began as a cordial discussion with Ramaphosa, but veered sharply off course to farm attacks in South Africa, ambushing the president.</p>Trump visit<p>Ramaphosa said he and his delegation went to Washington to meet with Trump in the Oval Office to establish a “basis for greater economic cooperation and to address some of the challenges” that have recently arisen in relations between our two countries.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Ramaphosa played the long game with Trump </p> </p> </p><p>“Our visit came at a time when US-SA relations have come under increasing strain, largely as a result of misinformation peddled by fringe groups in our two countries, including a false narrative about a so-called genocide and an orchestrated campaign of violence against white farmers.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Ramaphosa said in this context, it was critical for Pretoria to engage directly with the US administration to correct misinformation and provide a true account of the progress “we have made as a democracy and the many and complex challenges we still face.”</p><p>ALSO READ:‘There is doubt in Trump’s head about genocide in SA,’ Ramaphosa says [VIDEO]</p><p>“While this was a necessary conversation, the overarching aim of our visit was to deepen our strategic economic partnership with the us as our second-largest trading partner,” writes Ramaphosa.</p>Issues to be addressed<p>Ramaphosa said the US is a key export market for South African goods, which include motor vehicles, agricultural products and, increasingly, critical minerals.</p><p> </p><p>During the bilateral talks which played out before the media, Trump showed videos of EFF leader Julius Malema to support his false belief in genocide against whites in the country, asking why Malema has not been arrested.</p><p>On Saturday, after delivering the eulogy at the funeral of ANC Women’s League deputy president Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe, Ramaphosa was asked by a reporter about Trump’s issues.</p><p>“I am at a funeral, and we are here to mourn, and I would prefer that I’m allowed to mourn. All these issues will be duly addressed properly.”</p>Malema not ‘intimidated’<p>Despite the unsubstantiated claims made by Trump about genocide in South Africa, Ramaphosa, after meeting, said the talks with Trump were fruitful.</p><p> </p><p>“We were able to have a robust engagement with Trump, and it was also good to have a number of members of the delegation to field either a number of questions or make comments. Picture: Andrew Harnik / Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>If Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service is exempted from local rules on broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE), it would be “surrendering South Africa’s sovereignty” to the American tycoon. </p><p>This is the view of political economist Dale McKinle, who added: “It’s wrong in principle, it’s wrong in practice. The reason is that it sets a precedent for bending the rules simply because someone is wealthy.”</p>Starlink’s proposed deal ‘wrong in principle’<p>He said the fact that it involved a high-profile individual like Musk, who has a close relationship with US President Donald Trump, was itself a problem. </p><p>“It smacks of bullying. He suggested rethinking B-BBEE so that it benefits ordinary people rather than the elite. </p><p>The debate around Starlink’s possible exemption from adhering to B-BBEE rules is set to intensify as Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi was summoned by the portfolio committee on communications and digital technologies to appear before it today. </p>Minister summoned by committee <p>The committee believed Malatsi’s approach was in contravention of the Electronic Communications Act, which required B-BBEE to be applied by licensees in the sector. </p><p> </p><p>Several organisations promised to challenge the plan to allow Starlink to operate outside the B-BBEE policy in court, based on contravention of the law, including constitutional provisions on equality. Starlink was envisaged to roll-out connectivity, particularly in rural areas of South Africa. </p><p>ALSO READ: Malatsi’s move ‘a shameless sellout to American oligarchs Musk and Trump’</p><p>Malatsi proposed alternative empowerment strategies for investments in the information and communication technology sector, including equity equivalent investment programmes (EEIPs) which could mean investment in local infrastructure or small black-owned businesses. </p><p>Independent political analyst Sandile Swana said B-BBEE was a law in South Africa that could only be changed or abolished by parliament. </p><p> </p><p>“You can say B-BBEE will end if you are confident that 51% of parliamentarians want it abolished,” said Swana. </p>Law can only be changed by parliament<p>“Right now, the ANC is the only party that can end B-BBEE in South Africa. But if you are sure that the ANC is ready to end B-BBEE before 2029, that is fine; B-BBEE will then end.” </p><p>Swana said at least 22 American companies, including Microsoft, Amazon and Ford – that had invested in South Africa for many years – complied with the country’s B-BBEE laws without any qualms. He said those firms would be envious of Starlink being given preferential treatment by the government. </p><p>ALSO READ: Chance for people to really benefit</p><p> </p><p>The telecommunications sector is bound by the Electronic Communications Act – under which the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) was established – which states there must be B-BBEE shareholding for any licence issued. </p><p>“So, if you are going to hold a licence in that space, you must have black shareholders, whether you are a broadcaster or a telecommunications company,” said Swana. </p><p>“Since Starlink fell under the Icasa ambit, it should make a deal with Icasa that conforms with the Act.” </p>Sector bound by Electronic Communications Act<p>However, specialist website TechFinancials reported last week that EEIPs have been activated in major investments in this country by US companies IBM, Microsoft and Amazon. </p><p> </p><p>The website said foreign companies often cannot transfer direct ownership, so the EEIPs would be approved by the department of trade, industry and competition to earn B-BBEE points. 3156222	有图 <p> The Stormers are confident that they have the players to cover for star back Damian Willemse when they play Glasgow Warriors in their URC quarterfinal. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Damian-Willemse-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Stormers star Damian Willemse will miss at least two URC playoff games if they progress that far, after picking up a red card in their last match against Cardiff.Picture: Shaun Roy/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Despite suffering a heavy blow last week when it was confirmed that Stormers utility star Damian Willemse would miss most of the URC playoffs due to the red card he picked up in their final pool game against Cardiff, assistant coach Rito Hlungwani isn’t worried.</p><p>Willemse received the sanction after a high hit in their win over the Welsh side, which led to him being cited and initially banned for six weeks, reduced to three because of his good disciplinary record.</p><p>That could further be reduced by another week if he attends World Rugby’s infamous ‘tackle school’, which would make him available for the URC final should the Stormers make it that far.</p><p>But first they have the massive task of upsetting the United Rugby Championship (URC) defending champions, Glasgow Warriors, on their home patch, the Scotstoun Stadium, in their knockout clash on Friday night.</p><p>It is a repeat of last year’s quarter-final, where the Stormers pushed Glasgow all the way, trailing by just three points going into the last seven minutes of the match, with the hosts scoring two late converted tries to secure a 27-10 win in the end.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Is a coaching shake-up on the cards at the Lions? </p> </p> </p><p>They now have to do the job without Willemse, although the blow has been softened by Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok’s return from injury against Cardiff, that has bolstered the Stormers backline options.</p><p> </p><p> </p>Quite fortunate<p>“We are quite fortunate that a guy like Manie’s timing has been good in coming back from injury, and it’s great to have him back,” explained Hlungwani.</p><p>“Obviously it’s unfortunate to lose a player of Damian’s quality, but like I always say, when there’s an injury or a suspension it’s a nice opportunity for the next person to put their hand up and take their chance.</p><p>“We’re quite fortunate to have guys that can cover 15 and 12 (where Willemse would likely have played). We have Warrick (Gelant) at 15. Sacha (Feinberg-Mngomezulu) is very comfortable at 12. He’s played 12 for us quite a number of times.</p><p>“We will probably look to have Sacha as an extra playmaker (in the backline) and then Dan Dup (Dan du Plessis) also covers 12 as well. The 24-year-old man is still in custody and has already appeared before the Bolobedu Magistrates court on a charge of kidnapping and rape.</p><p>“He had lured a 28-year-old female to Limpopo under false pretences and raped her repeatedly. She was later rescued by police at a filling station in Giyani,” Mathe said.</p>GBV<p>Mathe stressed that while police investigating teams are on the ground in the Mongale case and several other GBV cases, “we are urging women to be extra vigilant and look out for the VW Polo”.</p><p>“Women are also urged to always report their whereabouts to friends and family when meeting new friends or going out on dates. Picture: AFP </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>English football team Liverpool’s Premier League trophy parade was marred by tragedy after a 53-year-old white British man rammed his car into pedestrians during the celebration, leaving dozens injured.</p><p>The car rammed into a packed crowd celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League title victory on Monday.</p><p>Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims told a press conference they had ruled out terrorism.</p>No terrorism<p>Sims said the man was arrested.</p><p>“We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. Picture: Gallo Images / OJ Koloti)</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>There is an interesting irony about the angry allegations that DA Communications Minister Solly Malatsi wants to bypass broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) rules to allow Elon Musk’s Starlink to operate in SA. </p><p>Malatsi’s proposals are not only not new, they are an accepted black economic empowerment strategy which has the approval of the department of trade, industry and competition… and which has been applied to investments here by some of the world’s biggest, US-headquartered companies, including Microsoft, IBM and Amazon. </p><p>The equity equivalent investment programmes (EEIPs) cited by Malatsi have been in operation since the B-BBEE Act of 2003 came into force.</p><p> The programmes allow companies to invest in skills development or black-owned small businesses, instead of having to sell shares… and earn B-BBEE points. </p><p>ALSO READ: Transformation Fund offers second chance for inclusive reform</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Proposed Starlink deal ‘wrong in principle and practice’ </p> </p> </p><p>That communications portfolio chair Khusela Diko seeming unaware of the policy implemented by her own ANC party is worrying – because it either means she is ignorant, or is trying to score political points against the DA in the government of national unity (GNU). </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In the broader picture, though, Malatsi’s actions will be seen as more “betrayal” by the ANC and others in the GNU who are as ignorant about EEIPs as is Diko. </p><p>The DA is already seen as trying to undermine the ANC by fighting the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act and in pushing back vigorously against the expropriation without compensation policy. </p><p>It hasn’t helped that DA ministers like Siviwe Gwarube (basic education); Leon Schreiber (home affairs) and Dean Macpherson (public works) have been conveying the image of getting things done. </p><p>EEIPs are in operation already, so why the big deal? The minute you drown yourself in that sorrow, then you won’t rise,” Komphela said.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“It’s very important to say okay it has happened but did I lose or did I learn? The lessons we picked up here should take us forward. Pyramids know that they have a problem as well because in as much as they scored away, but we’ll have to go back to Cairo and make life difficult for them.</p><p>“They are a good team and they also have a good backing and you don’t reach a CAF Champions League final by fluke. These guys came here and you saw they played and we’ve seen in their own domestic league that they are impeccable. Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been given the green light to investigate a 2021 procurement contract signed by the Department of Defence (DoD).</p><p>Authorisation for the investigation was approved on Friday, granting the SIU the mandate to look into any maladministration or irregularities that may have occurred between 1 March 2021 and 23 May 2025.</p><p>Should the SIU identify any actions of concern, it will pursue civil litigation or refer matters to the National Prosecuting Authority for consideration of criminal charges.</p>Surgical mask tender<p>The tender in question relates to the supply and delivery of surgical mask elastic hoops procured at an undisclosed amount</p><p>“The probe will also look at any irregular, unlawful, or improper conduct by officials or employees of the department, its suppliers or service providers, or any other person or entity implicated,” stated SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> How Covid changed our lives, mental health and shopping habits </p> </p> </p><p>Democratic Alliance spokesperson on military and defence, Chris Hattingh, called for implicated officials to be suspended immediately, noting the Auditor-General’s previous findings against the DoD.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“What’s worse is the department’s ongoing failure to act. Despite multiple oversight reports from Parliament, there’s been zero meaningful effort from within to clean house,” said Hattingh.</p>Investigation a ‘turning point’ <p>This is not the first SIU investigation in the DoD, as serious alleged procurement irregularities relating to a R33.4 Cuban medicine deal were revealed earlier this year.</p><p>The SIU stated in January that the DoD had signed a procurement agreement only after 930 units of antiviral drugs had been delivered from Cuba during the Covid-19 global health crisis.</p><p>The antivirals were later found to be non-compliant with South African Health and Product Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) standards, and only 15 were ever used, five of which were for testing.</p><p> </p><p>“South Africans deserve an armed forces institution they can believe in, not one broken by corruption and weak leadership,” stated Hattingh.</p><p>“This investigation must be a turning point. Picture: Gallo Images/Foto24/Brendan Croft</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Veteran South African radio DJ and sports broadcaster Darren Scott has passed away at the age of 61. </p><p>Scott had been battling an aggressive form of skin cancer, which had resurfaced several times over the years. </p><p>Tributes honouring Scott’s life flooded social media on Tuesday following news of his passing.</p>Radio legend <p>Scott made his mark at some of the country’s most recognisable radio stations, including Radio Bop, 5FM, Jacaranda, East Coast Radio, and eventually, HOT 102.7FM.</p><p>Hot FM said they are distraught by Scott’s passing. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> In the gloom, two South Africans bring global glory </p> </p> </p><p>“The last few months have been very difficult for Darren with numerous hospital stays. Our condolences go out to Darren’s boys, Mark and Matthew, and the rest of the family. Rest in peace Darren. We will miss you,” the station said.</p><noscript></noscript><p>ALSO READ: ‘I’m back in SA — I have to work to pay for treatment’: Darren Scott on his cancer battle</p>Cancer <p>The veteran broadcaster, who was in the United States with his children, said he had to return to South Africa to work in order to fund his cancer treatment.</p><p>Scott was first diagnosed with melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer, in 1986.</p><p> </p><p>In a Facebook post in December last year, Scott shared that he had been living with melanoma for 38 years. </p><p>“Melanoma is an invasive skin cancer, with a very high risk of death. Images: Charl Bosch </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Sampling two largely identical products from a manufacturer back-to-back seldom happens, but when it does, the differences are often noticeable.</p><p>Case in point, returning Chinese commercial vehicle brand Foton who supplied The Citizen with two variants of its double cab Tunland G7 bakkie for the weeklong test.</p>The step-up<p>Whereas the first encounter had been with the entry-level, two-wheel-drive TL priced at R399900, the swap for the second variant involved the mid-spec TLX equipped with the industry benchmark ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic gearbox.</p><p>In addition to the self-shifter replacing the six-speed manual, the TLX opens the Tunland G7’s four-wheel-drive portfolio by placing below the flagship Limited as the most accessible all-paw gripping derivative.</p><p>Compared to the TL, the inclusion of the part-time all-wheel-drive system and two-pedal transmission has resulted in the Tunland G7 becoming one of the pricier Chinese entrants with a sticker of R559900.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> What South Africa can expect: Volkswagen Tera detailed in Brazil </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Most basic Foton Tunland not perfect but strong value package</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>While still substantially undercutting comparative models from Toyota, Ford and Isuzu, the TLX finds itself being noticeably more premium than not only the top-spec JAC T8 Super Lux, but also the Elite version of the LDV T60 and the ever-popular Mahindra Pik Up S11 Karoo.</p><p>Having come away disappointed but also impressed with the TL, the weeklong stay with the TLX came with slightly more promise from not only the highly regarded ‘box, but also bolstered features list and more powerful engine attributed as the reasons for its loftier price.</p>Look closely<p>Aesthetically, and besides the change in colour from the TL’s grey to what Foton calls Bright Moon White, the TLX hasn’t undergone any external changes right down to the retention of the halogen headlights and daytime running LEDs.</p><p>In fact, only a 4×4 decal on the tailgate differentiates it from the TL. However, given that the rear-wheel-drive TLX lacks this, it could be argued that slightly more visual enhancements could have been applied to set it apart from its lesser sibling.</p><p> </p><p>As such, the TLX retains the 17-inch alloy wheels, side-steps, FOTON block lettering on the grille and front fog lamps – all already standard on the TL.</p><p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/DSC0039.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>Despite being the step-up from the TL, the TLX’s rear facia has not received any model specific changes. </sub></p><p>Essentially a single model, externally that is, the mixture of Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara and Mercedes-Benz X-Class styling elements harks back to the “copy-and-paste” design attitude the majority of Chinese brands have since let go of.</p><p>While still oddly proportionally given the loadbin appearing shorter than the bonnet, the Tunland G7 TLX is anything but a dullard.</p><p>However, given how rapidly products from the People’s Republic have progressed, a more distinctive “in-house Foton look” would have gone a step further to dispel the “copycat” connotations.</p><p> </p>Interior impresses more<p>Where the opposite continues to apply is the Tunland’s interior. With the fitting of the automatic box, the centre console has been redesigned with the result of the cabin, appearing more expensive and arguably worth its price premium.</p><p>As with the TL, the dual 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system remain, however, imitation leather upholstery replaces the cloth trim on the seats.</p><p>The upgrade in specs has seen two additional speakers being added to the sound system for a total of six, heating elements incorporated into the front chairs and six airbags versus two.</p><p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/DSC0113.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>Opening the doors reveals an interior different in one-key visual area from the TL.</sub></p><p>Unlike in the TL, the TLX gets auto on/off headlights that prevents the embarrassment of leaving the lights on, as well as keyless entry to go with the already standard push-button start.</p><p> </p><p>While still noticeably premium, the console’s piano key black finish seems a bit over-the-top as a less fingerprint-prone hue could have been used.</p><p>That being said, the setup still doesn’t look cluttered and now comes with a BMW iDrive-style rotary controller for the infotainment system, fingertip physical buttons, a toggle switch for the electronic handbrake and Auto Hold, plus proper buttons for the Hill Descent Control and traction control.</p><p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/DSC0148.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>Cloth seats in the TL have been replaced by imitation leather upholstery</sub></p><p>Along with a single cupholder, a storage cubby resides at the very front of the console, while the volume knob becomes one of the fingertip switches.</p><p>This also applies to the drive mode selector, the four-wheel-drive switches and the trio of colour themes for the infotainment system and instrument cluster, rather originally identified by a t-shirt symbol.</p><p> </p><p>Still an ergonomically-sorted design, fit-and-finish is felt slightly better than on the TL as no trim pieces had started to detached, as an example.</p><p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/DSC0166.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>Inclusion of the eight-speed automatic gearbox as seen in the Tunland received a redesigned centre console. </sub></p><p>However, the seats still felt hard, the instrument cluster partially obscured by a driver’s chair that doesn’t drop all the way to the bottom, and a steering wheel that only adjusts for rake and not reach.</p><p>What’s more, audio quality was found lacking, even with the two additional speakers. Although, as mentioned with the TL, rear passenger space remains a standout both on the headroom and legroom fronts.</p><p>Similarly, the workings of the infotainment system are still relatively easy, more so now with the rotary controller, while rear air vents, a single USB port and central armrest add more convenience for those seated at the back.</p>An engine that deserves more<p>As with the TL, matters for the Tunland G7 TLX go array on the powertrain front, a lot more thanks to the usual Chinese vehicle qualm of an oddly calibrated accelerator and misinformed transmission.</p><p>Powered by the Cummins co-developed 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine, the mill doesn’t start with the same ruckus as the TL, though this could possibly be attributed to the TLX having been better run-in as it had over 1500km on its odometer versus its sibling’s less than 500km.</p><p>On the move, its 120kW/390Nm feels undone by the accelerator/gearbox mix-up to the point where it lacks the responsiveness of the manual.</p><p>Although renowned as one of the industry’s best, the gearbox’s programming means it shifts in a tardy fashion when going down, and with an almost double clutch-style low-speed drag when setting off.</p><p>Even switched to Sport mode and the gear shift paddles in use, the Tunland G7 still felt lethargic despite the engine being eager to rev.</p><p>While the four-wheel-drive system has, bizarrely, not added any kerb weight, the mismatched drivetrain saw it run a 15.7 second time from 0-100 km/h at Gerotek, 3.6 seconds slower than the manual.</p><p>What’s more, the key overtaking speed of 60 km/h to 140 km/h couldn’t be obtained no matter Road Test Editor Mark Jones’ best efforts.</p><p>In fact, the Tunland was out of puff at 133 km/h and actually completed the 0-100 km/h dash slower in Sport mode than in Comfort.</p>On the road<p>Out on the road, the TLX felt similarly bouncy to the TL, although this will most likely improve with a load in the back.</p><p>Off-road left the same impression, and although the selected road merely represented a very badly maintained and rutted gravel path, the Tunland didn’t feel in its element.</p><p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/DSC0060.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sub>A 4×4 badge has been added to the tailgate on all all-paw gripping derivatives.</sub></p><p>That being said, lowering the tyre pressures will have the opposite effect with or without a load in the back. Picture: Jim Watson / AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The moment that the whole of South Africa waited for with bated breath eventually arrived in the Oval Office of the White House last week. </p><p>So much can be said about whether US President Donald Trump’s ambush of President Cyril Ramaphosa worked or not.</p><p>It certainly created the dramatic moment that he wanted, but did not really play out to be the equivalent of the embarrassing dressing down that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky received on his visit a short while ago. </p><p>With all that said and done, what did the moment mean for South Africa going forward? It meant that the country has been given another chance to redefine itself and position itself for economic growth. </p><p>In the praise and backslapping that followed Johann Rupert’s speech in front of Trump, it could have just easily been forgotten that the makeshift group that the diplomat in Ramaphosa cobbled together to appear before Trump had one job and one job only: prevent South Africa from becoming Trump’s latest example to the world of how irrational he can be by unfairly punishing the country for being independent and operating according to its own laws. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> US visit came amid ‘increasing strain’ between two countries, Ramaphosa says </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Ramaphosa and Trump meeting reveals global scrutiny</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>And Rupert helped in going some way towards achieving this, without even being aware he was doing so. </p><p>Rupert, the South African billionaire, appealed to Trump’s ego and placated Elon Musk when he said: “We need your help, sir. We need Starlink in every police station to help fight crime.” </p><p>In his unwitting sales pitch for Musk’s Starlink, Rupert distilled the purpose of the visit to one reality: reducing the crime rate in the country. That is what South Africa needs to turn itself around. </p><p>That not only made the meeting worthwhile for South Africa, it removed the audience from focusing on the sideshow around the 59 well-fed refugees and brought their attention back to making life comfortable for the 60 million plus patriots who have no get-out-of-jail refugee status card to turn to. </p><p> </p><p>That moment of clarity by Rupert interrupted a carefully orchestrated smear campaign against South Africa that took advantage of the country’s soaring crime levels, especially the murder rate by announcing an imaginary murder rate to the world. </p><p>ALSO READ: WATCH: Starlink not debated with Trump, Ramaphosa says</p><p>The campaign was clear: twist the murder rate statistics and invent a genocide, offer refugee status to a handful of Afrikaners, isolate the country economically and make it hard for its people to trade with the US, take away the country’s agency and make it hard for it to side with the US’ enemies and finally, when the time is right, offer to make everything right only if SA accepts trade terms that compromise the black empowerment laws. </p><p>In the four years that Trump is in the White House, Starlink will probably railroad its way into South Africa and concessions will be made around broad-based black economic empowerment laws, despite the shrieking objections of Julius Malema and a lot of other people. </p><p> </p><p>The benefit for South Africa will be in that four years the country will not lose the United States as a trading partner, however unfair that trading partner is. </p><p>The little economic growth and stability that come from that will allow a focused Ramaphosa to fight this insane crime rate which is allowing this genocide conspiracy to play out in the first place. </p><p>So, Rupert’s sales pitch will have worked for both Musk and the country. He was a friend to many, a smoke break partner of note, and a broadcaster like few others. He was also a doting dad and, with his charity One Wingz of Change, impacted lives well beyond his immediate and extended circle.</p><p>Darren Scott, who passed away at 61 after battling stage 4 melanoma cancer for decades, will be sorely missed on the airwaves by friends and colleagues. Sometimes, just knowing that he’s on the other end of a WhatsApp message meant a lot to many.</p><p>Michael Catterson, a former colleague of Scott’s, was shocked at the news. “It is a sad day, a mentor in the industry and an icon for South Africa has left us. A true inspiration, always willing to listen and give advice,” he said. </p><p>“Ahh, Darren Scott, you will be missed! The last time we spoke, you were giving me advice on cancer and how to look out for it and today, that dreadful disease has taken you. Our deepest condolences go out to your family and the two amazing little boys you lived for. We had so many ups and downs in our careers together, but we always pushed each other on. I’ll never forget the great times we had Daz. You’re still a c@#t, but I miss you. </p><p>“To Mathew and Mark, may you always know what a genius your dad was. Lots of love to all who knew Darren, whether you understood him or not. He had an amazing talent, one of which I always strived to emulate. Particular and somewhat fussy in the studio, but always willing to help and assist, being there for almost anyone and sharing the joys of suitcase shooters. When it came to charitable causes, he was front and centre every single time.</p>The joys of suitcase shooters<p>Sarah Kate Accetta, Scott’s former wife and mother to his kids, posted an initial tribute on Facebook. </p><p>“There are no words to truly express the depth of my gratitude to every single person who donated, prayed, and stood beside him during the fight of his life. Your generosity through the Back-a-Buddy campaign didn’t just fund treatment – it gave Darren hope. It gave him dignity. And it gave him the profound gift of feeling so loved,” she wrote.</p><p> </p><p>Two weeks ago, an industry-organisedbenefit concertwas also hosted to raise money for Scott’s cancer treatment.</p><p>“I watched him,” Accetta wrote, “day after day, scroll through your messages in disbelief – humbled, overwhelmed, moved to tears. He couldn’t believe that so many people cared. Thank you for giving him that in his final months. As we make our way back home now, to not only commemorate his life but to learn how to face life without him, I ask from the bottom of my heart: please pray for the boys. Their world has changed forever, and we need every bit of strength we can hold onto.”</p><p>Scott was a radio man’s radio man. Picture: Ekurhuleni Emergency Services. </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A man, believed to be 55 years old, has died in a shack fire in Ekurhuleni.</p><p>It is understood that a blaze broke out in Palm Ridge, on the East Rand, on Monday night.</p>Body discovered<p>Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson Katlego Mphalele said they received a call about the blaze just before midnight.</p><p>“At approximately 23:39 pm, our call centre received a distress call and dispatched two fire stations (3 and 4) to the scene at No 16050 Manyovu Avenue Extension 9, Palm Ridge. Upon arrival, firefighters found a one-room shack fully engulfed in flames.</p><p>“Firefighting efforts were immediately initiated, and the fire was successfully brought under control. A search operation commenced after extinguishing the flames, leading to the discovery of a charred body in the room. Picture: Ekurhuleni Emergency Services. </p>Marikana shack fire<p>On Monday, a shack fire claimed the lives of six family members in Kwa-Thema Marikana Extension 3.</p><p>Ekurhuleni media liaison officer William Ntladi said they received an emergency call about the fire around 3am.</p><p> </p><p>“Our crew from the Kwa-Thema Fire Station swiftly responded to the emergency. On arrival at the scene, they found the shack gutted by flames.”</p>Tragedy<p>A seven-year-old girl was the sole survivor in the heart-wrenching tragedy that has shaken the local community.</p><p>“I heard loud banging and immediately thought there was a fight outside,” said Class Mabena, a neighbour and a close friend of the deceased family.</p><p>“When I rushed out, I realised someone was banging from inside the shack. Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>There’s a big fight over land in Mpumalanga and it doesn’t involve expropriation without compensation, or even white farmers – it’s a battle between two groups who believe they were dispossessed of the same tract of land. </p><p>Nkomazi Game Reserve is the site of a clash between the residents of Vergelegen Farm and the department of land reform and rural development. </p><p>Vergelegen Farm is situated in Badplaas, a few kilometres from Nkomazi local municipality where the Nkomazi Game Reserve is situated. </p>Residents and government embroiled in land dispute<p>The squabble started recently when the community claimed their parents had successfully claimed the land they were occupying, but the authorities refused to hand over the title deed. </p><p>A source told The Citizen that instead of giving the title deed to the “rightful” owners, the department opted to hand over the ownership of the farm to the families that were claiming ownership of the Nkomazi Game Reserve, just to silence them. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Man arrested after hijacking bread truck, mugging driver </p> </p> </p><p>“What I know is that the department is trying to protect the game reserve, so whoever tried to claim its ownership was given a piece of land on the farms near the reserve,” said the source. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: How to ensure that your future life insurance claim is paid out</p><p>“The complaint is valid because the land was given to other people and the department claims that they can’t locate the data relating to their claim.” </p><p>The residents yesterday said they tried in vain to convince the government to hand over the title deed. </p><p>Community leader Lucky Maseko alleged the farm in question was successfully claimed by the elders some years ago, but they delayed collecting the title deed from the department’s head office in Tshwane.</p><p> </p>Delay in collecting title deed <p>“We went to the land affairs offices in Mbombela and we were told to approach their office in Piet Retief,” said Maseko. </p><p>“But they told us they can’t locate the information about the farm that we are occupying.” </p><p>He said about 40 households residing on the farm want proof of ownership so that they could be able to develop their farming businesses. </p><p>ALSO READ: Eskom reaches R43 million settlement with PwC over controversial contract</p><p> </p><p>He said most of the residents in the area were raising livestock and other farming-orientated businesses. </p><p>“The officials from the department took advantage of our illiterate parents and told them the only way to get the title deeds was to go to Tshwane,” he said. </p><p>“Without having any proof of ownership, we are not safe because people can come and evict us anytime.”</p>Maseko family stayed on farm since 1977 <p>Maseko said his family stayed on the farm since 1977, while others have been there longer. </p><p> </p><p>It is not the first time Badplaas farm communities accused the department of giving the farm to the claimants who were not part of the community. </p><p>Tomorrow, officials from the department are expected to meet more than 10 families from Theeboom Farm, just a few kilometres from Vergelegen Farm, to talk about allegations of handing over the land to the “wrong claimants”. </p><p>ALSO READ: RAF blocks R65 million worth of fraudulent claims</p><p>The Theeboom Farm residents also claim they were not consulted before the land they are occupying was handed to other people. </p><p> </p><p>They claim that those who are in possession of the title deed came and destroyed their agriculture projects to make way for the development in the area. </p><p>Department of rural development and land reform spokesperson Zithini Dlamini denied the allegations. </p>Dept denies allegations<p>“The property in question is owned by the Mashoba Community Trust after a successful restitution claim that was lodged with the department in terms of the Restitution of Land Rights Act, 1994 (Act 22 of 1994),” she said. </p><p>“The complainants and other families are currently residing on this property as farm occupiers and are not members of the trust. </p><p>“The department has on many occasions attempted to engage the farm occupiers to establish the extent of their rights to secure their tenure security as it is the mandate of this department. </p><p>ALSO READ: Manyeleti land restored to community after successful claim</p><p>“However, the farm occupiers do not want to cooperate as they feel they are the owners as they have been staying on this property for many years.” </p><p>Dlamini said the department needs to conduct a land rights inquiry to determine and establish their rights, then engage the current owners of the land. Picture: Cecilia van Bers/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>When I first saw Bayanda Walaza run, my initial thought was ‘this kid isn’t gonna make it’.</p><p>His raw talent was clear, but in every other way, he was all wrong.</p><p>When Walaza hits top speed, his arms start flailing and his head begins bobbing, andhe doesn’t display anything you want to see in a sprinter.</p><p>But one thing I’ve learned from watching Walaza run is that technique can be deceptive. The 19-year-old prodigy is super quick out the blocks, and when he hits his stride he is bizarrely efficient.</p><p>Last season he won a historic 100m/200m double at the World U20 Championships and helped the SA 4x100m relay team earn the silver medal at the Paris Olympics.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Simbine heads back to training after third Diamond League victory </p> </p> </p>Future star?<p>However, raw talent only takes an athlete so far, and the reality is that most junior stars don’t make it at senior level.
