Picture: ricollinart_official/Instagram</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Tributes to former Springbok winger Cornal Hendricks have expectedly poured in from the sporting world, particularly from rugby, his sport of choice.</p><p>Among them is 24-year-old artist Ricollin Moodley, who honoured Hendricks in the most unique way he knows — through a striking artwork created with lipstick.</p><p> <p> <p> </p> <p><svg><g><g><g></g></g></g></svg></p><p> <p>View this post on Instagram</p> <p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> <p> </p><p>A post shared by Ricollin Moodley (@ricollinart_official)</p><p>“My inspiration behind the tribute to the Cornal Hendricks painting is because I wanted to immortalise his memory with something that I’m known for, which is lipstick paintings of the Springboks. So that’s my way of paying my tribute to a fallen legend like him,” Moodley told The Citizen.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> In the gloom, two South Africans bring global glory </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: ‘An infectious smile that brightened our world’: Tributes pour in for Cornal Hendricks</p><p> </p><p> </p>Hendricks and Moodley connection<p>37-year-old Hendricks died of a suspected heart attack about a week ago.</p><p>The winger was diagnosed with the heart condition late in 2015 and missed two years of rugby because no team would take the risk of playing him with the condition.</p><p>He was finally allowed to return to rugby in 2019 when the Vodacom Bulls offered him a contract. </p><p>However, before he could sign the contract, Hendricks underwent a variety of tests and was cleared to play rugby again.</p><p> </p><p>“I can’t discuss Cornal’s medical diagnosis, but one thing I can say is that him playing rugby had nothing to do with his death,” Hendricks’ Cardiologist, Dr Wouter Basson told SuperSport.</p><p>Moodley said he connected with Hendricks’ story because, for health reasons, he’s unable to play sports.</p><p>“…so I found another way of using what I have to be a part of sports and also not letting my drawbacks stop me from doing something I’m passionate about and that is art.”</p><p>The Ladysmith-based artist says this was an emotional piece for him.</p><p> </p><p>“I was able to do it in two days because I used whatever funds I had to get the lipsticks and supplies to make it.”</p><p>Moodley said that he can’t donate the artwork to Hendricks’ family.</p><p> <p> <p> </p> <p><svg><g><g><g></g></g></g></svg></p><p> <p>View this post on Instagram</p> <p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> <p> </p><p>A post shared by Ricollin Moodley (@ricollinart_official)</p><p> </p><p>“I cannot because lipstick is an expensive and unique medium, and I need every art sale because I’m doing art to support my family; therefore, every art piece I create is available for sale to help put food on the table,” he shared.</p><p>ALSO READ: SA-born artist Marlene Dumas breaks global record with over R245 million painting sale [PICS]</p>Using art to fight poverty<p>He shared that he struggled to get money for supplies from the time he started making art in 2017, so he found creative ways to make his art.</p><p>“So that allowed me to find ways to make art with things around me and to be creative in using what I have, which is how I started painting with lipsticks a couple of years ago,” he said.</p><p> </p><p> <p> <p> </p> <p><svg><g><g><g></g></g></g></svg></p><p> <p>View this post on Instagram</p> <p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> <p> </p><p>A post shared by Ricollin Moodley (@ricollinart_official)</p><p>Moodley is a self-taught artist who has quickly built a reputation as one of the country’s promising artists through his unique approach to portraits.</p><p>He found popularity in the last year and a half through his portraits of the Springbok World Cup-winning team.</p><p>“My biggest dream is to one day afford a home for my family and I, so we no longer have to rely on art sales just to cover rent,” he said, adding that his mother is unwell and unable to work.</p><p>“…and my father’s income isn’t enough to meet all our needs. 3147301	有图 <p> Willemse"s red card could see him ruled out of the URC playoffs and the start of the international season. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Damian-Willemse-red-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Stormers utility back Damian Willemse trudges off after receiving his red card in their URC win over Cardiff at the Cape Town Stadium this past Friday night.Picture: Ashley Vlotman/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Stormers face an anxious wait to hear what ban Damian Willemse is set to receive following his red card during their 34-24 win over Cardiff in their final United Rugby Championship (URC) pool match of the season.</p><p>Willemse was given his marching orders for a high hit on visiting wing Gabriel Hamer-Webb in the second half, which was the second red of the match after Cardiff prop Danny Southworth received one in the first half for his high tackle on Neethling Fouche.</p><p>Willemse’s transgression could however prove very costly for the Stormers, especially if he receives a ban that rules him out of the entire URC playoff phase.</p><p>In fact it could impact his return to the international fold as well, with Willemse having last played for the Springboks in the final of the 2023 World Cup, following which he missed last year’s entire international season due to various injuries.</p><p>He thus would have been in line to make his return in the incoming series against Italy and Georgia in July, but if he received a multigame ban as expected, and the Stormers go down in their URC quarterfinal against Glasgow, that would carry over into the international season.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Sports update: Bulls, Sharks & Stormers set for quarter-finals </p> </p> </p><p>Where Willemse could receive some mitigation from the citing commissioner is that there didn’t seem to be any intent in the tackle and a low degree of force, although there was clear shoulder contact to the head.</p><p> </p><p> </p>A disaster<p>Commenting on the tackle after the match, Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson admitted that the ban could be a disaster and a potential hammer blow to their URC playoff hopes, and that they would consider an appeal depending on the outcome.</p><p>“I haven’t seen it enough to comment on what the impact is. He was stuck. I don’t think he was trying to hit with the shoulder, I think he was trying to turn,” explained Dobson.</p><p>“The implications, I’m sure, are going to be poor for us. I’ve got no doubt. We can’t appeal until there is a decision. I don’t see them overturning that. Picture: Supplied</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Runners from the Justin Snaith stable dominate the entry for the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday. </p><p>There are 11 runners entered in the R2-million race for three-year-olds and six of them come from Snaith Racing. </p><p>Of course, leading the sextet is Cape Town Met and Cape Derby winner Eight On Eighteen, who is likely to go off as a hot favourite for this race. The Lancaster Bomber colt had a perfect warm-up for this race when finishing a 0.60-length second behind stable companion Sail The Seas in the Grade 2 WSB Guineas over 1600m at this course. </p><p>Interestingly, Snaith has already declared three of his runners for the race and other than Eight On Eighteen, he has Native Ruler with JP van der Merwe up and Makazole, to be ridden by Andrew Fortune. </p><p>Once again, Richard Fourie will be on Eight On Eighteen. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Form favours the King </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Callan puts Dave back on throne</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Another runner of interest is Fabian Habib-trained Confederate, who has not been seen in action since winning the Grade 2-1 SA Classic over 1800m at Turffontein on 1 March. Image: X</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>It’s taken a month and two days but TV anchor Aldrin Sampear on Monday finally apologised to Newzroom Afrika, his colleagues and “babies”. This, for allegedly assaulting and verbally abusing a 20-year-old woman during a road rage incident in Randburg on 17 April.</p><p>The video showed him screaming, pushing and yelling at the young woman after allegedly ramming her off the road with his luxury SUV. In the recording, she also yelled at him to “stop hitting me”. The video went viral with more than 2 million views, nearly equivalent to half the number of total X users in South Africa.</p>No apology for Aldrin Sampear’s victim<p>However, Sampear did not offer a public, nor personal, apology to purported victim Laricia Augusto. </p><p>“It was really disappointed that he did not even recognise his role in the incident beyond acknowledging that it happened,” said Augusto. “But the fact remains that it happened, and I was there. That it’s okay to act inappropriately and aggressively toward a young woman and then to apologise to everyone, except to her?” </p><p>Sampear was suspended after the incident, until the apology on Monday.</p>No word from law enforcement<p>Despite having laid charges of assault against the broadcaster, Augusto said that she has also not heard from law enforcement since. </p><p>“I am actually quite nervous when I drive around now,” she said. “What happens the next time someone bumps into me, even if it is by accident?” </p><p> </p><p>Basson said that it’s gender-based violence, no matter which way you look at it. “Are the authorities really serious when they say they want to protect women and children against the scourge of gender-based violence?”</p><p>He said that an apology should be heartfelt, and it requires a measure of honesty. “We live in a society that is on a knife-edge, and we all want to live in peace with one another. But if someone cannot even apologise to their alleged victim, where do we even start with reconciliation?”</p><p>Augusto said she was shocked to learn after the incident that Sampear had previously admitted to having acted violently towards women. “I did not even know who he was when the incident occurred. I only learnt later that he was an influential broadcaster and about his past,” she said.</p><p>Since the incident, social media commentators have had a field day with the events that unfolded in the video. Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Seven high school pupils, who are accused of assaulting another pupil, appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.</p><p>The girls, aged between 13 and 14, were arrested after a video showing a group of girls attacking another 14-year-old Bedfordview High School pupil went viral on social media.</p><p>They appeared in court for a Preliminary Inquiry (PLI) or hearing before a child justice court as dictated by the Child Justice Act and have been released into the custody of their parents. </p><p>The Act states that a PLI should be held within 48 hours of the arrest of a minor child to determine, amongst others, their personal circumstances and their backgrounds, as well as any factors that may have led to the minor committing the alleged offence.</p>Case postponed<p>The pupils from Bedfordview High School, Kensington High School, Queens High School, and Phoenix College each face a charge of common assault after the victim reported them to her school and opened a case on 12 May.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> ‘Where’s my apology?’: Road rage victim still waiting for Aldrin Sampear to say sorry to her </p> </p> </p><p>“Their case was postponed to 21 May 2025 for the finalisation of the PLI where two of the minors have undergone the necessary assessment by probation officers,” National Prosecution Authority (NPA) Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said in a statement.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>According to the NPA, the incident happened in Yeoville, Johannesburg, on 10 May following an altercation.</p><p>ALSO READ: Discipline and learning collapse at Wordsworth High School</p>NPA and GDE condemn learners‘ actions<p>“The NPA condemns the alleged attack and encourages the youth to find amicable ways to resolve conflict,” Mjonondwane said.</p><p>The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has also condemned the actions of the seven pupils and said they were swiftly suspended from their respective schools.</p><p> </p><p>“The GDE strongly condemns such acts of violence among learners. Violent behaviour among learners, whether within school grounds or beyond, is unacceptable and will carry serious consequences that may affect learners’ education and long-term prospects,” the department said in a statement on Monday.</p><p>“We reaffirm that fostering safe, respectful, and supportive learning environments is a top priority for the department.”</p>Schools investigate<p>The department said the schools have begun internal investigations into the misconduct of the pupils involved, in line with their codes of conduct and applicable disciplinary procedures.</p><p>All affected pupils, including the victim, will receive psycho-social support provided by the GDE.</p><p> </p>‘Building a non-violent society’<p>“We also call on parents and guardians to play an active role in shaping the values and conduct of their children. Building a non-violent society starts at home,” the department said.</p><p>“Parents must work hand in hand with schools and the department to instil discipline, empathy, and accountability in our learners. Together, we can cultivate a society of respect towards education institutions, which will ensure that Gauteng schools remain safe spaces for quality learning and teaching.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Stabbed teacher returns to school as frustrated parents demand solutions</p><p>The GDE also urged pupils to report bullying incidents and any form of violence to their teachers, school leadership, parents or guardians, or the nearest GDE district office. </p><p> </p><p>Silence only protects the aggressor, and that can lead to more misconduct, the department said.</p><p>*For additional support, pupils can freely contact the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) at 0800 567 567 or reach out to Childline South Africa on 116. Picture: Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images North America / Getty Images via AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Perhaps the most unforgivable part of the Great Trek 2025 edition of 49 Afrikaner refugees (five more than Charlize Theron’s 2022 census), clad in their down jackets and toting their bespoke luggage on a chartered flight to freedom in the US, was that the clamour last week overshadowed a far more important milestone. </p><p>On Thursday, 8 May, it was 100 years since the great writer CJ Langenhoven introduced a Bill in parliament for Afrikaans to be recognised as one of the country’s two official languages. </p><p>It’s still an official language to this day, albeit with 11 others. Afrikaans’ trajectory from kombuistaal to an official language used to defend academic theses and highly complex legal arguments has been a benchmark for all indigenous tongues. </p><p>The language has been robustly promoted and protected by white speakers throughout its history, but they only make up about 40% of the people who actually speak it as a first language. </p><p>It’s South Africa’s third-most used language, spoken by almost 13% of the population and when you look at its representation in literature, film, culture and advertising, it’s second only to English which, ironically, is the mother tongue of less than eight percent of the population, ranking sixth in the official language table. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Ramaphosa not ‘apprehensive’ about meeting with Trump, Presidency says [VIDEO] </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Second chance for Amerikaner ‘refugees’</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Afrikaans has been a success story by any metric, much like white Afrikaners themselves. </p><p>In terms of their representation in the formal job market, ownership of businesses, directorships and, of course, agriculture, they have proven – as so many African nationalists have said over and over – how affirmative action can really benefit a group of people, so many of whom were unemployable, unskilled and poverty stricken when the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910, which continued to weigh heavily upon the minds of their leaders well beyond the end of World War I – and definitely after 1948. </p><p>In 1960, Harold MacMillan rattled white South Africans when he told them in no uncertain terms about the Wind of Change blowing through Africa. </p><p>Three years before, MacMillan had shocked Britons when he told them they’d never had it so good. </p><p> </p><p>It’s a truth that quietly resonates for all the Afrikaners who remain here, just as it does for all their other white compatriots who aren’t leaving. </p><p>That’s why 187 years since Piet Retief left Makhanda for freedom, the 49 now have their own name from those they left behind; the Voet’Tsekkers. He’s not apprehensive at all.</p><p>“We don’t think President Trump invited President Ramaphosa for that kind of treatment. There are issues of concern on the side of the US and on our side as well. It is possible that those issues may trigger a rather robust discussion, which is only the nature of these engagements. But we believe that the kind of courtesy that we are accustomed to, that heads of state extend to one another, will be in full display tomorrow,” Magwenya said.</p>Zelensky treatment<p>While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not granted the same kind of courtesy by Trump during their meeting, Magwenya said “the issues are different”.</p><p>“President Ramaphosa is not President Zelensky. He’s got his own style of engaging. He’s got his own style of communicating, and so we cannot attribute that event to what may or may not happen tomorrow.”</p><p> </p>Afrikaners<p>Magwenya said the issue of the white Afrikaner refugees being granted asylum in the US by Trump will be addressed by Ramaphosa.</p><p>“In the build up to tomorrow’s meeting, there’s been an increasing or rather, let me put it this way, the assertion that there’s a persecution of white people in South Africa has kind of been made repeatedly, and so clearly it’s an issue that needs to be addressed, and it won’t be addressed.</p><p>“But the president is not planning to spend an inordinate amount of time on that issue. But it happened – quietly, suddenly and irrevocably. </p><p>Somewhere between the last exile’s return and the first black economic empowerment (BEE) deal signed, the liberation struggle changed outfits. </p><p>It swapped khaki fatigues and wood-handled AKs for navy-blue suits, Montblanc pens and private equity portfolios. That day, the struggle went corporate and at first felt like victory. </p><p>For decades, the architects of the struggle fought not for title deeds and car allowances, but for dignity. For the right to exist, speak, learn and lead. </p><p>In prison, exile and underground, they endured the unimaginable so that future generations could live unshackled. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> WATCH: President Cyril Ramaphosa speaks at funeral of late ANC SG Dumalisile Nokwe </p> </p> </p><p>When the gates of Robben Island opened and negotiations began in earnest, the idea was simple: liberation should now mean transformation. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Workers’ rights: Union members tend to become spectators while leaders take decisions</p><p>It was time to take the reins of power. Politically, yes, but also economically. </p><p>By the late 1990s, the symbols of victory were shifting. Comrades who once huddled over Marxist pamphlets in Lusaka or Dar es Salaam were now being seen in Sandton skyscrapers and five-star conference centres. </p><p>The rallying cry of “the people shall govern” evolved into strategic board appointments, BEE scorecards and shareholder activism. Some wore it well. </p><p> </p><p>But for many, especially those groomed in struggle circles but disconnected from post-liberation policy, the new terrain was confusing and seductive. </p><p>Deals were structured not around need or equity, but access. Who you knew and the struggle resumé you carried. </p><p>The term “Struggle Credentials” found new life. </p><p>ALSO READ: Minister extends date for comments on R100 billion transformation fund</p><p> </p><p>No longer just a badge of honour, but a currency. </p><p>It would be disingenuous to pretend this evolution was all betrayal. For many, it was a genuine shift in the theatre of struggle. If capital had been the tool of oppression, then surely mastering it, reclaiming it, was the next phase of emancipation. </p><p>Then, the language of freedom became interchangeable with financial jargon. </p><p>Development was measured not by clinics or clean water, but by returns on investment. Public intellectuals who once challenged state power now issued press releases defending profit margins. And corporate events began with liberation songs, rendered in mezzo-soprano as background entertainment between keynote addresses. </p><p> </p><p>The tragic brilliance of the South African story is that it was so well-intentioned. We wanted to believe that wealth could be wielded ethically. That capitalism could be tamed and Africanised. That executive power could be used to empower, not just enrich. But markets have no memory. And soon, neither did we. </p><p>In the process of “being taken seriously”, the movement adopted the postures of the very structures it once vowed to dismantle. </p><p>ALSO READ: What problem does government want to solve with R100bn Transformation Fund?</p><p>Respectability became strategy. The revolution wore a Rolex and arrived late to the AGM. </p><p> </p><p>Those who raised questions about extractive economics, about moral drift, about the marginalisation of communities were quietly pushed aside. </p><p>“Idealist.” “Out of touch.” “Still stuck in the past.” </p><p>The real thinkers, agitators and grassroots leaders, many of them women, many of them youth, were left at the periphery. </p><p>Not everyone succumbed. There were those who tried and are still trying to reimagine power. To hold space between justice and profit. </p><p>Thinkers like Mamphela Ramphele, who never shied from critiquing the dilution of the liberation dream. Or Neville Alexander, who warned about replacing one elite with another. </p><p>ALSO READ: Steenhuisen hits back at Sakeliga’s claims he is pushing pro-black agriculture policies</p><p>Thuli Madonsela, who demonstrated that integrity could exist inside high office without being swallowed by it. Duma Gqubule, whose economic commentary continues to call out the illusions of inclusion. </p><p>Many remain unsung. Men and women who chose less glamorous paths. </p><p>As once-famous names died, obituaries would reveal their “covert” roles in the struggle. </p><p>“Underground operative,” “MK combatant,” “intelligence courier.” Sometimes the claims rang true. Other times, we squinted. </p><p>The real resistance was, and still is, unglamorous. Unrewarded. The woman who fed exiles with her last meal. The teacher who snuck in black consciousness literature. The nurse who hid activists during curfew. The ones who never got invited to sit on a board and never asked to be. </p><p>If the first liberation was political, and the second economic (however flawed), then perhaps a third is emerging: a moral and intellectual reawakening. </p><p>ALSO READ: Sho Madjozi accuses AfriForum of being used by Elon Musk in bid to launch Starlink in South Africa</p><p>One where liberation is not measured by wealth or status, but by how we care for the most vulnerable. Where blackness is not sold back to us through branding. Where struggle is not a springboard to entitlement, but a commitment to service. </p><p>This doesn’t mean we must abandon ambition or success. It means interrogating its purpose. </p><p>The day the struggle went corporate was not a betrayal. It was a choice. Picture: Michel Bega/The Citizen</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>AfriForum has started legal action against the City of Tshwane to obtain clarification on the implementation of the proposed environmental, or city cleaning levy announced in the budget speech. </p><p>Last week, the deputy mayor, MMC of finance Eugene Modise, announced the city’s plans to implement the levy of approximately R200 per month from 1 July for all properties without a municipal waste account. </p><p>AfriForum’s local government affairs advisor Deidré Steffens said they submitted a request to obtain clarification on the city’s plans regarding the levy in April, but received no reply. </p>AfriForum submit to request clarification on levy plan<p>“On 24 April, AfriForum submitted its comments on the city’s draft medium-term revenue and expenditure framework (MTREF) in which the levy was announced. </p><p>“Our legal team has made it clear that the draft MTREF containing details of the proposed levy contains material contradictions and gives excessive discretionary power to the municipal manager in the application of the levy. This creates unacceptable scope for abuse and arbitrary application,” she said. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> ‘Where’s my apology?’: Road rage victim still waiting for Aldrin Sampear to say sorry to her </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Tshwane’s R54.6bn budget draws mixed reactions</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>According to Steffens, the implementation of the proposed levy would be contrary to Section 74(2) of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, which requires that tariffs reflect the actual use of services and be applied fairly. </p><p>Steffens said although the constitution required municipalities to promote the social and economic development of communities in their budgeting processes, this was not the case with the implementation of the levy. </p><p>“A non-revenue-generating service, such as a cleansing levy, is traditionally financed by property rates and if the city were to proceed with the proposed implementation of this levy, it would amount to double taxation. </p>Cleansing levy traditionally financed by property rates<p>“It is unacceptable that a service that should be funded by property taxes is now being repackaged as a new levy, presumably to cover the metro’s budget deficits. </p><p> </p><p>“This is a blatant attempt to milk more revenue from already overtaxed residents,” she said. </p><p>ALSO READ: Millions needed to fix Tshwane sinkholes</p><p>AfriForum was prepared to approach the court if the city failed to provide the information by the deadline, Steffens said. </p><p>Republican Conference of Tshwane councillor Lex Middelberg said the levy was a reintroduction of a similar city cleaning levy that was introduced in the 2017-8 MTREF but then abandoned. </p><p> </p><p>“This cleaning levy is unconstitutional. Pictures: Instagram and Robyn Beck/AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Amid the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth which seems to be present-day South Africa, it is good to know that our supposedly traumatised country can still produce world-beaters. </p><p>There were two of them this week who rose to the highest heights in their respective fields. Western Cape registered the most arrests with 55, followed by Eastern Cape with 52 and KZN with 49.”</p><p>ALSO READ: ‘Most-wanted’ CIT murder suspects dead in Boksburg shootout [VIDEO]</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> 7 teens appear in court after shocking assault video goes viral </p> </p> </p><p>Mathe said 183 suspects were also arrested for murder.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“The Eastern Cape had 52 arrests, followed by Gauteng and KZN with 36 arrests each.”</p>Discipline<p>Mathe said the National Commissioner of Saps, General Fannie Masemola, called on parents, guardians, community leaders, and young people to work together with thepoliceto instil discipline, respect, and accountability amongst young people to prevent and combat bullying incidents.</p><p>“The call follows an incident where seven girls between the ages of 13 and 15 were amongst 16,001 suspects who were arrested for various crimes this week. The seven were traced by police and arrested following their participation in an alleged act of bullying where a 14-year-old girl was a victim.</p><p>“All seven female pupils were arrested and placed into the care of their parents in line with the Child Justice Act. They all appeared today before the JHB Magistrates Court and are expected to appear again on a charge of common assault on Wednesday, 21 May 2025,” Mathe said.</p><p> </p><p>This latest incident is among several incidents of bullying that police have attended to in recent weeks.</p><p>In Letlhabile near Brits, police in the North West also arrested a 16-year-old boy who was placed in the care of his parents last week.</p><p>Mathe said the matter is still under investigation, where the police are investigating 20 other children for their alleged involvement in this matter.</p>Bullying<p>Meanwhile, Masemola warned young people that bullying is criminal conduct and punishable by law.</p><p> </p><p>“Bullying has dire repercussions. Once you get involved in acts such as bullying, you can be charged for assault, GBH, common assault, crimen injuria and a host of other crimes. Being formally charged means you get to have a criminal record under your name, which has negative implications on your future,” Masemola said.</p><p>“The police will not hesitate to act against those who involve themselves in such acts. Those who get involved in such acts will be traced and made to answer before a court of law for crimes committed. Young people must refrain from getting involved in such acts.</p><p>“We have heard in some instances that some children took their lives as a result of acts of bullying. They expose a central truth that policymakers continue to ignore – that the growth of mining profits is not translating into jobs, justice or dignity for those most impacted by the extraction,” said Macua spokesperson Magnificent Mndebele. </p><p>“Government leaders parade Operation Vulindlela and sectoral reforms as solutions to inequality and unemployment. But our audits reveal the opposite. </p><p>“The mining sector, empowered by expedited licences, deregulation and policy favouritism, has become a site of elite enrichment, not shared prosperity. </p>Site of elite enrichment<p>“With record profits of over R72 billion from just 11 audited mining companies, communities have seen less than 0.13% of that reinvested in their development. </p><p> </p><p>“Our audits uncovered over R284 million in missing SLP funds across 11 sites, with more than 75% of committed development projects incomplete or undocumented.” </p><p>ALSO READ: SA opened 159 new mines in five years, creating over 15 000 jobs</p><p>Mining expert David van Wyk said Macua’s report was an accurate reflection of what is happening in the mining-affected communities. </p><p>“I fully agree with Macua – mining does not create jobs. This country needs to move up into a post-mining economy. </p><p> </p><p>“On a post-mining economy, I mean that we need not export strategic minerals necessary for manufacturing, for example iron, chrome, manganese, lithium and rare earth minerals. These are all required for manufacturing in general and for batteries and AI technologies in particular.”</p>Need for focused state and foreign investment <p>“Then we need focused state and a foreign investment to kickstart a manufacturing base.”</p><p>“That means moving away from the low-wage economy. We have 60 million people either on low wages or unemployed. They cannot afford manufactured goods. Picture: Middleburg Oserver </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has begun investigating the cause of a light aircraft crash that claimed the lives of a husband and wife.</p><p>According to police, 39-year-old Quinton Steyn and his wife, 38-year-old Lizette Steyn, tragically lost their lives in a light aircraft crash near Botshabelo Airfield in Middelburg on Sunday.</p><p>The couple was reportedly travelling from Nelspruit to Middelburg, where they resided at the time of the crash.</p><p>ALSO READ: Pilot tragically killed in crash at West Coast Airshow in Western Cape [VIDEO]</p>Aircraft crash<p>SACAA spokesperson Sisa Majola confirmed the accident that involved a Rans Aircraft S10 Sakota (Registration ZS-WXE).</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Macpherson hands over 10 properties in Mpumalanga for GBV shelters </p> </p> </p><p>“The aircraft departed from Middleburg Airfield before crashing shortly after take-off within the boundary of the airfield. The pilot and passenger on board were declared dead by Emergency Services on arrival. The aircraft was destroyed by the post-impact fire,” said Majola. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Majola said the site was secured on Sunday evening and guarded by the South African Police Service (Saps)</p><p>“The AIID is on site this morning to collate evidence that will form part of a preliminary report that will be published on the SACAA website in 30 days.</p><p>“The AIID extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” Majola said.</p>Airshow crash<p>In March, a pilot was killed when the aircraft crashed during the West Coast Airshow at the Saldanha Airfield in the Western Cape.</p><p> </p><p>Videos shared on social media show the plane ascending, spinning mid-air, descending rapidly before plummeting to the ground and bursting into flames.</p><p>“There is one confirmed fatality, a pilot on board an Impala Aircraft (Registration: ZU-IMP). The AIID is working with the event safety officers to collate preliminary information.</p><p>“The AIID will provide a public update from the scene, should this be deemed necessary. Picture: GCIS</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s budget 3.0 has many, including constrained provincial administrations and traditional authorities, asking for bigger slices from the yet-to-be divided national cake. </p><p>With the value-added tax (VAT) issue that delayed the passing of the budget now off the table, Godongwana could be smiling as he delivers his budget speech tomorrow – four months after a hollow address in February. </p>Political parties and rural voices weigh in<p>Now that a consensus has been reached, with the government of national unity (GNU) parties giving budget a thumbs-up, many have come forward to claim their share, or what they think they deserve from the cake. </p><p>Even the usually reticent traditional leaders have asked Godongwana not to forget them. Some provinces had been struggling to survive beyond the end of the past financial year as their budgets were exhausted. </p><p>The situation worsened after Godongwana withdrew the Division of Revenue Bill and the Appropriation Bill he introduced in the National Assembly last month, due to the budget impasse within the GNU. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Proposed cleaning levy sparks legal challenge in Tshwane </p> </p> </p><p>All the provincial budgets depend on the national allocations by the minister. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: will it be third time lucky for Godongwana?</p>KwaZulu-Natal hangs by a thread<p>KwaZulu-Natal, which has been hardest hit by budget depletion, had been waiting for Godongwana’s allocations with bated breath after it had almost exhausted its 2024-25 financial year budgets – leaving service providers and early childhood teachers high and dry for at least two months. </p><p>KZN finance MEC Francois Rogers appealed to Godongwana and National Treasury to ensure that the way forward is clearly mapped out during the coming days. </p><p>“We also call on National Treasury to ensure that there are no reductions in KZN’s equitable share, or provincial conditional grants,” Rogers said. </p><p> </p>Political parties and rural voices weigh in<p>The DA has made significant proposals dealing with comprehensive fiscal strategies. Traditional leaders also want a fair share of the budget allocations to develop their communities, whom they claimed were neglected for many years. </p><p>North West-based Bakgatla ba Kgafela traditional leader, Kgosi Nyalala Pilane, was first to jump to the fore to request Godongwana to prioritise rural development. </p><p>He urged Godongwana to prioritise spending that delivers real impact and avoid shortcuts that harm low-income households. Hun var datter av en svært autoritær lege.En far som de første årene etter medisinstudiet jobbet for kong Leopoldsterrorvelde i Belgisk Kongo, før han ble lege på Odda.</p><p>Hun begynte på medisin, menmistet motet etter å ha strøket på en eksamen. I stedet ble hun sykepleier ogpleiet sin store interesse: Russland og det russiske språk. Hennes kjærlighet ilivet fant hun i Kozlov, en russisk krigsfange.</p><p>Etter krigen søkte Haavik til Utenriksdepartement. I 1950 søktehun seg til ambassaden i Moskva. Derprøvde hun å gjenoppta kontakten med sin elskede Kozlov. Ambassadens lokalesjåfør hjalp henne så gjerne. Alle på ambassaden visste at han jobbet for KGB. Bareikke Haavik, forklarer Haavik. Kozov blir presset til å gjenoppta forholdet medHaavik. Av KGB selvsagt, neppe av kona.</p><p>Og så presses Haavik til å skrive underen spionkontrakt. </p><p>Det er på ingen måte et ideologisk prosjekt. Haavik er enpen borgerlig dame. Hun elsker det gamle Russland, kulturen og språket. Det erheller ikke helt en kjærlighetshistorie. Kozlov treffer hun sjelden og stadigsjeldnere. Men hun smigres av gaver og oppmerksomhet, hun hjelpes medøkonomien. Hun stiller som lokkedue for å fange inn amerikanskeambassadeansatte i nettet. En av dem tarhenne på alvor, men får nei da han frir. Samtidig gir hun dem så lite hun kan slippe unna med.</p><p>Men når en annenblir feilaktig arrestert for det hun har gjort, lar hun det skje. IngeborgLygren var neste sekretær på ambassaden og får livet ødelagt. Kanskje skjønte ikkeHaavik at det var henne de jaktet på. Kanskje er naivitet ett godt teppe å gjemmeseg under.</p><p>Som leser savner jeg mere fortløpende drøfting: Akkurathvorfor skrev hun under spionkontrakten? Når Haavik forteller at henneselskede Kozlov ville skille seg og gifteseg med henne, hva betyr det? Hadde hun takket ja, ville jo hennes verdi somspion for KGB vært over brått.</p><p>Kofstad skriver riktig godt, men kunne våget åvære mer til stede.</p><p>Hvorfor reagerte ingen på ambassaden når en KGB-agentbetalte sykehusoppholdet hennes i Moskva? Og var det ikke rimelig risikabeltfor hennes KGB-føringsoffiser å besøke henne personlig på sykehuset? </p><p>Hvordan kunne historien om at hennes store kjærlighet ilivet var en russer eksistere på ambassaden og seinere i UD uten at noenvarslet eller tok en sikkerhetssjekk? I stedet arresterte de feil sekretær. Hans forsvarer, Unni Fries, har hele tiden argumentert for at det er tvil om hans tilregnelighet. </p> <p>Saken ble imidlertid gjenåpnet i mars i 2023 etter at forsvarer Unni Fries leverte en begjæring om gjenopptagelse til Gjenopptakelseskommisjonen.</p> <p> To sakkyndige som var oppnevnt av kommisjonen, konkluderte med at Manshaus var å anse som psykotisk og dermed utilregnelig på gjerningstidspunktet. Han ble vinteren 2023 akuttinnlagt på sykehus med psykose før han ble utskrevet igjen etter noen måneder.</p> <p></p><p>Fries sa i forbindelse med gjenopptakelsen at Manshaus tar avstand fra sine tidligere holdninger.
