Picture: Lefty Shivambu/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>It’s now time for the Bulls to win the United Rugby Championship.</p><p>While the Stormers won the title in the inaugural season in 2021/22, and should have gone back-to-back in 2022/23, and the Sharks won last season’s Challenge Cup, the reality is the Bulls have been South Africa’s best and most consistent performers in the URC.</p><p>And while they face a tough knockout phase this season, starting with a quarter-final against Edinburgh, and a potential final away to Irish giants Leinster if they get that far, Jake White and his charges have a wonderful opportunity to finally go all the way.</p>Playoffs in each of last four seasons<p>The Bulls’ consistency in the URC is remarkable.</p><p>In 2021/22 they finished fourth with 11 wins from 18 matches and 58 points. The following season they finished sixth with 10 wins from 18 and 53 points.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Can the Stormers ride terrific form into URC semifinals? </p> </p> </p><p>Last season (2023/24) they finished second with 13 wins from 18 and 66 points and this season they have again finished second, but with 14 wins from 18 and 68 points.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>If things go their way they will play at home in the quarters and semi-finals, and if they get lucky, also in the final, provided they progress that far and someone knocks Leinster out.</p><p>Last season’s final loss to the Glasgow Warriors (16-21) hurt badly. Playing at home at Loftus Versfeld the Bulls had everything they needed to win the title, but they didn’t deliver on the field when it mattered.</p><p>A year on and they look stronger, with greater depth, and will again believe they have what it takes to go all the way.</p><p>Coach Jake White and company CEO Edgar Rathbone, and all their staff, have done wonders for the team and union and the Bulls are again right up there, among the best provincial/club sides in the game.</p><p> </p><p>Of course, the Sharks and Stormers will also have aspirations of winning the title this season, and they, too, have a good chance, but if any team deserve to win the URC title it is the Bulls. Picture: Supplied</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Leading JSE-listed food services franchisor Famous Brands delivered double-digit dividend and headline earnings per share (Heps) growth for theyear ended 28 February 2025on Monday, despite slower revenue growth of 3.2% to R8.3 billion.</p><p>Last year(FY2024) revenue grew 8%, but the group said FY2025 saw “economic headwinds in South Africa” which “significantly curtailed consumer spending”. However, it also highlighted “some green shoots”.</p><p>Famous Brands reported a 14.2% jump in dividend per share, 12.6% increase in operating profit (to R914 million), and an 11.9% jump in Heps (to 520 cents) for FY2025, as it upped internal efficiencies and boosted its operating profit margin by 0.9 basis points to 11%.</p><p>ALSO READ: Here’s how you can make four burgers for R50 with retailer’s new food deal</p><p>The group, which counts 16 big brands like Wimpy, Steers and Turn n Tender as part of its quick service and restaurant chains, said ‘curtailed spending’ meant “consumers prioritised essential spending and seek value for money. Competition remains fierce, with increasing advertising activity and a higher frequency and depth of value deals and promotions” during FY2025.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Did Raubex break the law? Financial results halted due to whistleblower allegations </p> </p> </p><p>“The landscape favours franchised brands over independent restaurants,” the group noted.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Other challenges include deteriorating infrastructure, including unreliable electricity and water supply and logistics sector issues. However, there were some green shoots for 2025, including the reduction in load shedding, improved consumer sentiment, rand stability, lower inflation and three interest rate cuts,” it added.</p><p>The company’s board declared a final dividend of 195 cents per share and said its financial performance for the year “demonstrates resilience”.</p><p>ALSO READ: Chicken, burgers and pizza are SA consumers’ take-away favourites</p><p>Together with the final dividend, total dividends for the year came in at 345 cents per share (FY2024: 302 cents). A total dividend of R345.7 million was paid out of current-year profits, it said.</p><p> </p><p>“Our Leading Brands portfolio performed strongly, with solid performances across the brands. However, our Brands’ overall performance did not meet our expectations due to lower consumer spending,” the group noted.</p><p>“This subdued demand had a negative impact on our manufacturing and logistics results.”</p><p>Famous Brands has a restaurant network of 2 979 outlets across 20 countries, over 2600 of which are in its core SA market.</p><p>The vertically integrated group includes its restaurants and fast-food chains (Brands unit) in addition to manufacturing, logistics and retail business units. Picture: Supplied</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A study in the United Kingdom revealed that Mazda owners are the most negative towards cyclists who share the road with them, while Suzuki drivers were found to be the most cyclist-friendly.</p><p>Even I don’t like cyclists sometimes with their “I own the road” attitude, and I get why motorists get irate with them. And by them, I mean us. I am a weekend warrior, social, mountain biker, who does take to the road sometimes to keep the legs turning when I don’t have time to head off into the bush. And I have to say that being on the road with angry drivers around is not fun.</p>Mazda owners ‘highly’ frustrated<p>United Kingdom-based Scrap Car Comparison surveyed 2 000 drivers to analyse their attitudes and behaviours towards cyclists on the road. Using the responses, they then created a unique “cycling negativity score” to reveal whether certain car owners are more or less likely to have an issue with a cyclist. This score factored in knowledge of road rules, attitude towards cyclists, levels of frustration with cyclists, and the self-reported distance left when overtaking a bicycle.</p><p>Mazda owners were revealed as being highly frustrated by cyclists. They show poor attitude towards them, with many reporting that they leave less than the prescribed 1.5-metre gap when overtaking.</p><p>Other car brands cyclists may need to watch out for include owners of German manufacturers Mercedes, BMW and Audi. They are best at leaving the correct overtaking space, along with the best knowledge of the road rules, and have a more positive attitude towards cyclists than many others.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Mazda CX-60 Takumi’s superb diesel engine steals the show</p>Cyclists have right to use road too<p>“Cyclists often frustrate drivers by slowing them down. They also have pressure from drivers behind them. However, all drivers need to remember that cyclists have the right to use the road as much as car owners, and that a small inconvenience timewise, is much better than causing a crash or creating danger to other road users out of frustration,” said Matt Clamp, customer service manager at Scrap Car Comparison.</p><p>ALSO READ: New chapter: PHEV and EVs in Mazda plans for South Africa</p><p>“This, of course, works both ways, and the onus is also on cyclists to ensure they are visible and always signal to let drivers know where they are going. 3149323	有图 <p> The Competition Commission’s Media and Digital Platforms Market Inquiry’s provisional report found Google guilty of anti-competitive practices. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Google-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: iStock </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Google has taken issue with several of the recommendations the Competition Commission of South Africa has laid out in the Media & Digital Platforms Market Inquiry (MDPMI).</p><p>The Commission published the non-confidential version of Google’s response to its provisional report on the MDPMI last week.</p>Anti-competitive practice<p>In February this year, it published its provisional report on the MDPMI, with Google in particular being looked at for how it engages with local publications and how it drives users to the news.</p><p>It found the tech giant guilty of anti-competitive practices and stated that it could be required to pay up to R500 million a year in compensation to South African media outlets.</p><p>“Google’s monopoly position and the unequal bargaining position of the media means there has not been an equitable share of value between Google and news publishers in South Africa both historically and currently.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> 24 hours in pictures, 20 May 2025 </p> </p> </p><p>“This inequity has materially contributed to the erosion of the media in SA over the past fourteen years and will continue to do so unless remedied,” the Commission outlined in February.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Google says SA news industry needs ‘innovation and collaboration’ after Competition Commission report</p>Google responds<p>Some of the key points taken from the full version of Google’s submission state that the commission does not take into account the fact that the way people access news has changed.</p><p>“We search, stream and scroll across multiple sites, platforms and screens to understand what’s going on in our communities and around the world.</p><p>“The SACC’s proposed remedies put a disproportionate burden on Google. I was going to be picked up at the airport, and I was picked up on time. I was then taken to the hospital, where I got to rest. My blood was taken, along with all my vitals. I then got to meet my surgeon,” she shared.</p><p>Mosaka said her surgeon understood exactly what she wanted, which was a huge plus.</p><p>“We had the same vision for the results I wanted. I stayed in the hospital for a night, and they made sure I was comfortable. My drips were regularly checked, and someone came to see me every 30 minutes to an hour. I really felt taken care of.</p><p> </p><p>“The next day, I was transferred to the Mono Hotel. It is absolutely beautiful. I have this stunning room on the lower level, with a gorgeous bathroom in the centre. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. Picture: Supplied</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Ditsobotla, about three hours west of Joburg, achieved fleeting national fame in 2021 when Clover announced it was pulling its cheese factory out of the area due to what it politely called “poor service delivery”. It has since relocated to Queensburgh in Durban, despite threats of protest from trade unions and supplications from the North West provincial government.</p><p>“The [Clover] Lichtenburg factory has been experiencing water and power outages for years, and the municipality has not maintained the surrounding infrastructure,” the company said. “Despite numerous efforts to engage the municipality on these matters, the issues have not been resolved.”</p><p>Ditsobotla again achieved notoriety in 2022 when President Cyril Ramaphosa described it as a “horror show” that had been taken over by gangsterism. He was there on the election trail facing angry residents, whom he implored to return the ANC to power – only this time with better councillors. In the 2021 local elections, the ANC won a 50% majority with the DA and EFF winning about 14% each of the vote.</p><p>We know from the Auditor-General that the worst municipalities in SA are splattered across the Northern Cape, North West and Free State.</p><p>These municipalities have the same telltale signs of looting and neglect: electricity if you’re lucky, Eskom bills unpaid, taps running dry, poor water quality, and refuse collection a faint memory of a sunnier past.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> WATCH: Diepkloof protest turns deadly [VIDEOS] </p> </p> </p><p>That pretty much sums up the state of Ditsobotla, which comprises Lichtenburg, Coligny, and Ga-Raphalane, home to over 200 000 residents. It failed to submit financial statements for the 2023 financial year and has been repeatedly flagged by the Auditor-General for financial mismanagement, audit failures and collapsing basic services.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: North West residents still waiting for basic services after years of begging the government</p>Enough<p>This collapse of services and governance prompted business organisation Sakeliga to ask the North West High Court to declare national government responsible for the decay at Ditsobotla and assume responsibility for it, as required under Section 139 of the Constitution.</p><p>This is not the first time the municipality has been bypassed.</p><p>In 2023, North West province took over and drafted a recovery plan, but even that hasn’t worked, says Sakeliga. More than a year has passed since the recovery plan was formulated, and it still hasn’t been adopted. That plan called for a six-year implementation, which is “unreasonable and unjustifiable” and ignores the urgency of the situation.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Emfuleni municipality: Fears that workers won’t be paid and service delivery will completely collapse</p>How bad is bad?<p>The court papers detail the extent of the crisis at Ditsobotla:</p>No municipal manager or senior managers;Understaffed internal audit function;Kidnapping of provincial staff from the province by municipal employees due to non-payment of salaries;An under-funded budget with no prospect of improvement;Not enough funds to publish a recruitment advertisement for a municipal manager, prompting it to approach the province for the funds;Unpaid contractors holding the municipality to ransom over unpaid invoices;Electricity infrastructure obsolete;Roads are in a dire state, with insufficient staff and funds to maintain them; andCriminals have vandalised or sabotaged water and electricity infrastructure.<p>One of the reasons given by the province for non-implementation of the recovery plan is the frequent vandalism and theft of water and electrical infrastructure, leading to extended service outages in parts of Lichtenburg, Coligny and Blydeville.</p><p>There’s also a lack of skills, employees refusing to work, and a lack of funds to purchase needed equipment and pay salaries.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: North West municipality’s years-old water woes blamed on blackouts</p>Worse than just bad …<p>Reading through the court papers, it doesn’t get much better.</p><p>The provincial managers sent in to clean up the mess noticed a pattern of possible organised crime and sabotage. This became evident when certain outside service providers were found to be receiving huge unauthorised and fruitless expenditure payments. These outside contractors were appointed on an emergency basis due to theft, overcharged for their services, and demanded upfront payment.</p><p>This has apparently become a ‘thing’ in SA – destroy municipal infrastructure so you can outsource services to your buddies and gouge local residents.</p><p> </p><p>Various reports identifying the state of Ditsobotla have been prepared by North West province, the latest showing woeful under-achievement in virtually all key activities. Of the 95 key activities to be implemented in the finance pillar, just 21% have been achieved or partly achieved in 15 months.</p><p>It gets worse from there – only 4% of key activities have been achieved in the institutional and human resources pillar, 15% in governance, and 1% in service delivery, a situation that remains almost unchanged in more than a year.</p><p>Most residents in the area live below the poverty line, so recovering funds through service fees makes it almost impossible to invest in infrastructure.</p><p>Illegal electrical connections are on the rise, and civil unrest has accompanied water shortages on several occasions.</p><p> </p><p>Despite a 2023 order from the North West High Court to supply sufficient potable water to residents as a matter of urgency, this has not happened.</p><p>One attempt to address the water issue involved the delivery of water tankers, which were to have been connected to the water mains. This never happened. The site has since been vandalised and is standing idle.</p><p>ALSO READ: Way to make cities work properly</p>Worrying trend of de-urbanisation<p>What’s happening at Disobotla is part of a worrying trend of de-urbanisation, says Sakeliga.</p><p>“Across South Africa, cities and towns are met with an influx of people from the rural areas generally attracted to economic opportunities and the provision of greater and/or better basic services, such as water, electricity and health care, due to the centralisation of services in urban areas.”</p><p>Yet the opposite is happening in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, which Ditsobotla is part of.</p><p>Sakeliga says this due to the collapse of Ditsobotla and its local economy.</p><p>In other words, people are leaving the town for rural areas.</p><p>ALSO READ: Stats SA claims most South Africans have access to water and electricity, but is service delivery up to standard?</p><p>Attempts to appoint a new municipal manager in July 2024 ended up in the Labour Court after the acting manager applied to have the appointment set aside. This created further delays in addressing the municipality’s well-documented crises.</p><p>The Klipveld Water Supply Scheme, which supplies three local towns, has 17 boreholes – but only 15 are operational. The boreholes can supply 15 million litres of water a day, well below the 20-million-litres-a-day demand. The situation is worsened by vandalism and illegal water connections.</p><p>Residents ofBoikhutso, a village in Ventersdorp, spend hours each day queuing for water, which unscrupulous members of the community have seized for their own profit.</p><p>“Waste and refuse removal [have] ceased since 4 March 2024, with the accumulation of waste across Ditsobotla posing a serious hygiene and health risk to residents,” says Sakeliga’s court papers.</p><p>ALSO READ: High court orders North West government to resolve crisis-plagued Ditsobotla</p><p>Illegal waste dumps have proliferated, and raw sewage flows through several large streets.</p><p>Municipal billing has either collapsed – or, where it does occur, is based on estimates.This resulted in unlawful intimidation by municipal staff to coerce payment for inaccurate or disputed bills.</p><p>Roads and signage have deteriorated.</p><p>Yet the municipal manager set aside R180000 to send a team to Bloemfontein for a sports event, illustrating the municipality’s completely skewed priorities.</p><p>In 2024, Eskom said it was owed R1.2 billion by Ditsobotla. Lichtenburg residents report that water is available for two or three hours a day, and those who can afford it pay for private refuse removal.</p><p>Clover may have been the first large business to vacate the area, but it won’t be the last.</p><p>ALSO READ: Ditsobotla municipality: ‘A humanitarian, constitutional crisis’ – Sakeliga</p><p>The provincial executive has failed to restore basic services to Ditsobotla and it’s time for national government to step in and restore order, says Sakeliga.</p><p>Instead of acting to avert a deepening crisis, the government chose inaction.</p><p>The outcome of this case could be a watershed for the country’s accelerating descent into municipal chaos.</p><p>While the courts have on occasion sided with residents and businesses against failing municipalities, these have also been reversed (as in the case of Kgetlengrivier, also in North West). The view from Sakeliga is that the situation is now so dire that the courts, and national government, can no longer look the other way.</p><p>This article was republished from Moneyweb. Picture: Moneyweb </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has pledged to defend jobs following Nissan’s announcement of global plant closures, which include facilities in South Africa.</p><p>Nissan’s plans will reportedly lead to the closure of its Rosslyn Plant outside Pretoria as part of its factory consolidation from 17 to 10.</p><p>The Japanese brand announced last week that it would reduce its global workforce by a further 20 000 jobs on top of 9 000 last year, and shut seven factories after posting a record R82.2 billion revenue loss for the 2024 financial year.</p>‘At least 20 000 jobs are at risk’<p>Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said on Tuesday that the union has noted with concern Nissan’s planned shutdown of some of its plants. </p><p>“We must be upfront and state that as a union, we have not received formal communication or confirmation, and the information we have is based on media reports. It revealed that some senior managers are involved in leaking Absa’s information, prompting the bank to take disciplinary action against the individuals.</p><p>In recent years, Absa has been known for its leadership instability, marked by frequent changes in chief executive officers (CEOs) since 2019. This year alone, the bank has announced it will be getting a new CEO and a new chairman of the board.</p><p>There have been reports that suggest former CEO Arrie Rautenbach’s early retirement and the leaked information are related. Financial results halted due to whistleblower allegations </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Absa and Standard Bank raised their minimum salaries for 2025 – here’s the new pay</p><p> </p><p> </p>Absa’s information leaked<p>Absa confirmed to The Citizen on Monday that it has commissioned an independent investigation, which included the leaking of confidential company information in its scope.</p><p>To ensure its impartiality, the investigation was conducted by ENS Forensics, an independent third-party forensic firm.</p><p>“The investigation has concluded that there is prima facie evidence of serious misconduct, which will be presented in a formal disciplinary inquiry in accordance with proper protocols and procedures, including being chaired by an independent senior counsel.”</p>Information leaked outside official channels<p>Absa added that none of Absa’s established whistleblower channels were used, and at no point did the employees involved identify themselves as whistleblowers or indicate they were making protected disclosures as defined by the Protected Disclosures Act or Absa’s policy, “despite having the opportunity to do so”.</p><p> </p><p>“We value the critical importance of whistleblowers in maintaining organisational integrity and have robust protections in place for any individual who comes forward with legitimate concerns.</p><p>“Our employees have access to multiple secure channels through which they can report issues confidentially or completely anonymously, including an independently managed external facility operated by one of the big four audit firms to ensure impartiality and trust.”</p><p>Absa did not disclose how the information was leaked.</p><p>ALSO READ: Former customer charges Absa with perjury and defamation</p><p> </p>What information was leaked?<p>The bank stated that a few senior staff members are involved in the disciplinary action. “Absa is following its internal disciplinary process. It would not be fair or appropriate to speculate about the outcome of the enquiry and any subsequent actions.”</p><p>The bank further stated it is bound by its commitment to strict confidentiality and will not provide additional commentary on the specifics of this case.</p><p>TimesLIVE reported earlier in May that Rautenbach’s departure from the bank may not be what Absa initially stated. It is suggested that a leak of important information may have led to the former CEO’s early retirement.</p>Leadership instability<p>Absa has undergone significant changes since the departure of its long-serving CEO, Maria Ramos, in 2019.</p><p> </p><p>Since then, the bank has had six interim and permanent CEOs, which raises the question, “What is going on at Absa?”</p><p>The latest to be appointed as CEO is Kenny Fihla, the former deputy CEO of Standard Bank. He will commence his duties on 17 June 2025. Will he last longer than other CEOs since Ramos’ departure?</p><p>The latest prominent figure to go on early retirement is Sello Moloko, the bank’s chairman. governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) Jacob Mamabolo has provided the provincial legislature with a detailed breakdown of each municipality’s operational capacity. </p><p>Mamabolo shared the information via a written response to a question in the legislature.</p><p>Gauteng has 11 municipalities and over 15 million producers of waste, with Johannesburg alone producing 1.6 billion tons of trash a year.</p>Fleet capacity<p>The Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni metros are two the most populous in the province and have the largest fleets of vehicles. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> House 79 of its 124 trucks currently in use.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The City of Tshwane did not disclose their fleet capacity, but confirmed it has an external contractor who charged the city a daily service rate.</p><p>In Emfuleni, 34 trucks are out of operation due to breakdowns, while 29 have reached the end of their lifespan and need to be replaced.</p><p>Midvaal reported that three of their nine trucks were operational between January and March, while Lesedi said five of their nine trucks were operational.</p><p>Mogale City and Rand West City confirmed that their vehicles were leased, while the West Rand district and Sedibeng municipalities were not responsible for waste collection services for residents.</p><p> </p>Outsourced services<p>The DA took exception to the reliance on external contractors while scores of trucks were grounded.</p><p>“These municipalities should consider repairing the trucks that are gathering dust due to insufficient maintenance and repairs,” said DA Cogta spokesperson Khathutshelo Rasilingwane.</p><p>“It would be sensible to utilise the existing staff in waste management departments to guarantee timely waste collection without straining the budget further.</p><p>The DA said it would continue to press the administration on the details of these outsourced contracts and why they were being prioritised over fixing the existing fleets.</p><p> </p>Costs, maintenance and backlogs<p>Ekurhuleni’s annual estimated cost for repairs and maintenance of its waste management vehicles was R26.2 million and 10 new trucks are due for delivery by June.</p><p>Johannesburg’s estimated cost to repair and restore the 45 non-operational vehicles amounted to just over R900000 and it only had a modest 1% backlog per week</p><p>Tshwane did not disclose their maintenance costs and insisted “there are no waste collection services backlogs in the city”.</p><p>In Merafong, R12 million is needed to repair their fleet, while R20.8 million was required to repair the trucks and compactors at Lesedi municipality.</p><p> </p><p>Rand West City covered the cost of fuel and insurance for their service provider, but wished to recruit additional staff to the tune of R6 million annually.</p><p>Emfuleni reported the highest rate of missed collections, averaging an 84% backlog in residential collections.</p><p>Despite their challenges, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Mogale City, Merafong and Midvaal said there were no collection backlogs in their municipalities. </p><p>Ensuring the facilities that accept waste are fit for purpose also requires funding and Johannesburg lists the requirement to rehabilitate landfills at R835 million, with no allocation pending.</p><p> </p><p>Emfuleni estimated R100 million each would be needed to refurbish its two disused landfill sites, with Tshwane and Lesedi preparing to spend a combined R13.8 million on authorisations to close eight dumping sites.</p>Landfills<p>Space in a congested province is already at a premium where waste disposal sites fight against the need for housing and other basic services.</p><p>To service Gauteng’s three metros, there are 13 operational landfill sites. </p><p>All but one of the smaller municipalities has a single landfill site, with only Mogale City’s Luipaardsvlei facility having exceeded capacity.</p><p>At the southern end of the province, Midvaal has three landfills with space to spare.</p><p>Vaal Marina landfill is at 80% capacity, while Henley-on-Klip and Walkerville were at 60% and 40% capacity, respectively.</p><p>The municipalities have various smaller dumping sites and landfills that are not operational, with rehabilitation programmes subject to environmental law, compliance and funding challenges.</p><p>NOW READ: One million kilogrammes of trash The SIU has completed investigations in these phases.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Phase three, which is ongoing, has an estimated value of R905.9 million. It has an estimated date of completion of 31 December 2025.</p><p>The value of contracts under investigation with potential civil litigation is about R2 billion. However, the SIU has recovered only R9.5 million of this.</p><p>ALSO READ:NLC heist: SIU almost done with second phase of R1.4bn NLC corruption probe</p><p>The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) has issued preservation orders amounting to R78.2 million, while the Special Tribunal’s preservation orders stand at R37.3 million.</p><p> </p><p>At least R6.3 million in pension has been frozen.</p>SIU probe into NLC<p>According to Mothibi, between 2020 and 2024, 22 individuals and entities were referred to the NPA for criminal prosecution related to fraud, corruption and money laundering.</p><p>At least 15 persons have been identified as alleged key players in the NLC corruption, including the former board chair, Alfred Nevhutanda, who has approached the courts in an attempt to get the SIU off his back and former chief operations officer Phillemon Letwaba, who is challenging the constitutionality of the Special Tribunal’s preservation order against him. </p><p>ALSO READ:NLC spends over R8 million on suspended employees facing disciplinary action</p><p> </p><p>According to the SIU, the key players were allegedly able to access NLC funds due to inadequate project management, a lack of monitoring and evaluation, ineffective project auditing techniques, general maladministration in the approval of the grants and corrupt elements.</p><p>Seven directors and 14 companies have been referred to the CIPC for being placed on the delinquency list and for being barred from registering companies with the CIPC in the future.</p><p>But the SIU is not done with the NLC yet. Pictures: AFP </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>As the meeting between President Cyril Ramaphosa and US President Donald Trump looms, the Presidency said it will be difficult for the US administration to “sustain” its claims of a genocide against Afrikaners or white farmers in South Africa.</p><p>The stage is set for the anticipated heated and robust meeting between Ramaphosa and Trump, expected to take place at the White House on Wednesday.</p>Roasting Ramaphosa?<p>There is speculation about how the meeting will go, with fears Ramaphosa is walking into a “Zelensky-style ambush”, referring to the viral clash that took place when Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House in February which was broadcast live on television.</p><p>The Government Communication and Information Services is not sure if the meeting will be broadcast live.</p><p>“We will share the link on our group if it goes live. He’s not apprehensive at all.</p><p>“We don’t think President Trump invited President Ramaphosa for that kind of treatment. President Ramaphosa is not President Zelensky. He’s got his own style of engaging. He’s got his own style of communicating, and so we cannot attribute that event to what may or may not happen tomorrow.”</p>Agenda<p>Ramaphosa arrived in Washington on Monday afternoon with his delegation for a working visit to the US amid tensions between the two countries.</p><p> </p><p>While the Presidency did not share an agenda for the talks, it said the purpose of the visit is to “reset and revitalise bilateral relations between South Africa and the US”.</p><p>“In this regard, the visit will focus specifically on reframing bilateral, economic and commercial relations.”</p>Transactional Trump <p>Trump is a transactional president and may want some concessions from South Africa when he meets Ramaphosa </p><p>“President Trump approaches diplomacy and engages in a very transactional manner, with economics as the foundation and driving force behind international affairs,” retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, the president’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, explained at an event in Washington this past week.</p><p> </p><p>For Trump, it’s about leverage, not friendship; dollars as much as values; and hard power versus soft.</p><p>ALSO READ:Ramaphosa not ‘apprehensive’ about meeting with Trump, Presidency says [VIDEO]</p>SA refugees<p>The visit comes just days after the US welcomed a group of 49 Afrikaners as “refugees”. Trump falsely claims they are being persecuted in South Africa due to their race and are facing a “genocide”.</p><p>Magwenya said the Americans will have to “come clean” about the political process of resettling Afrikaners under the guise of refugees.</p><p> </p><p>“As a government, we cannot prevent people from leaving, but we will express our displeasure at people who leave under false pretences and people who leave under the guise of things that are not happening in our country.</p><p>“It’s going to be difficult for the Trump administration to sustain this so-called genocide in South Africa, it’s going to be very difficult, and the burden of proof is ultimately on the US to substantiate those claims,” Magwenya told 702. </p>Other issues<p>Ramaphosa and Trump are also expected to discuss several other issues, including members of the US administration snubbing the G20 meetings, aid cuts, the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and possibly the expulsion of former South African ambassador to the US Ebrahim Rasool.</p><p>In February, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a social media post on X, said he “will not” attend a summit of the grouping to protest the South African government’s controversial land seizure bill.</p><p> </p><p>“I will not attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg. South Africa is doing very bad things. Expropriating private property. Using G20 to promote ‘solidarity, equality & sustainability’. In other words diversity, equity and inclusion.</p><p>“My job is to advance America’s national interests, not waste taxpayer money or coddle anti-Americanism.”</p><p>Relations between the US and South Africa hit an all-time low after Trump cut financial aid to South Africa, citing Pretoria taking Israel to the International Court of Justice and “strengthening ties with Iran, which supports terrorism globally”.</p><p>It is believed that these two issues will also be on the agenda.Tensions between the two countries were further heightened following Rasool’s recent remarks on Trump.</p><p>Rasool was expelled by Rubio after he claimed in a webinar that Trump (and, later, Elon Musk) are leading a global white supremacist movement.</p><p>ALSO READ:US secretary Marco Rubio will not attend G20 summit because SA ‘is doing very bad things’</p>US-South Africa Bilateral Relations Review Act<p>Ramaphosa may also discuss the US Congressman and Republican Ronny Jackson introducing the US-South Africa Bilateral Relations Review Act, providing tools to impose sanctions on “corrupt South African government officials” who support America’s adversaries like China, Russia and Iran, among others.</p><p>Jackson introduced the US-South Africa Bilateral Relations Review Act of 2025, which would mandate a full review of the bilateral relationship between the United States and South Africa.</p><p>This is a follow-up of legislation that passed the House of Representatives in the last Congress but was not taken up by the Democratic-led Senate. Republicans now control both Houses.</p><p>Jackson said Representative John James is co-leading the US-South Africa Bilateral Relations Review Act legislation.</p><p>“South Africa has brazenly abandoned its relationship with the United States to align with China, Russia, Iran and terrorist organisations, a betrayal that demands serious consequences,” said Jackson.</p><p>“This legislation ensures we conduct a comprehensive review of this supposed ‘ally’ while also holding accountable any corrupt officials. The era of governments undermining American interests without repercussions ends now.”</p>Starlink<p>Ramaphosa also plans to discuss business opportunities for Musk’s companies, especially Starlink.</p><p>Asked about licensing for Musk’s satellite company, Starlink, Magwenya said: “Certainly, the issue will be discussed.”</p><p>Musk, who is South African-born, has previously claimed Starlink was barred from operating in South Africa because he is not black, an allegation South African officials refuted.</p><p>The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa said in March that Starlink had not applied for a licence.</p>Face-off<p>The decision for Ramaphosa and Trump to meet face to face was clinched when the two presidents spoke in a phone call ahead of the state visit to South Africa by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. He cut short his visit immediately after meeting Ramaphosa due to a Russian air strike on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv.</p><p>In the phone call, Ramaphosa said he had spoken to Trump.</p><p>“President Trump and I also agreed to meet soon to address this and various matters regarding relations between South Africa and the United States. We both spoke about the need to foster good relations between our two countries.”</p><p>This will be the first face-to-face meeting between Ramaphosa and Trump since the latter’s election as US president. As someone in my mid-60s, I’ve lived through that era, and I’ve had drawings of mine banned and publications in which my drawings appear, also banned,” Zapiro said at the time.</p><p>Facebook and Instagram recently took down some of his cartoons, including one in response to US President Donald Trump withdrawing critical US aid agency funding. He drew Trump in a Nazi uniform, sending out an AIDS vulture to kill millions of Africans.</p><p>This led to a conversation about Harvard University refusing to relinquish freedom of speech to Trump.</p><p> </p><p>“Why does it take the richest university in the world – and why has it taken so long for educational institutions and other institutions – to say ‘No!’ to Trump?” he asked.</p><p>“The bullying and censorship going on in America that we are all seeing is so damaging and pervasive, and I would like to see some other big institutions following Harvard’s line. The Midrand and Sandton systems are stable.</p>Water reduction<p>Johannesburg Water has implemented water reduction/throttling since 8 November 2024.</p><p>“To manage high consumption and support the recovery of our systems, Johannesburg Water will continue to enforce the restriction programme according to the separate schedule. Should the Department of Agriculture ban the imports, the poultry industry in SA could face a massive shortage, leaving the industry little to no choice but to increase prices.</p><p>The same measures may be forced upon Astral Foods, South Africa’s largest poultry producer, which is already under pressure from rising input costs despite remaining profitable.</p><p>ALSO READ: Bird flu: Farmers can apply for compensation for animals destroyed</p>Chicken shortage <p>The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters (AMIE) has urged the government to avoid a blanket ban on Brazilian imports and instead adopt a regionalisation strategy that targets only the specific areas affected by the outbreak.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> It’s chess with gloves and a kick: Boksburg teen dreams of becoming pro MMA fighter </p> </p> </p><p>This approach has already been announced by Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the Philippines in response to the outbreak in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>AMIE CEO Imameleng Mothebe warned that a full ban on Brazilian poultry imports would have devastating consequences for South African poultry processors and consumers, particularly the country’s most vulnerable.</p>The importance of chicken imports<p>“Imported poultry not only fills the country’s poultry consumption gap, but also provides the necessary competition to ensure that prices are kept in check.</p><p>“Chicken is the most affordable protein source for many South Africans, and a disruption in the supply of poultry products, including bone-in chicken and mechanically deboned meat (MDM), will significantly drive up prices and impact food security,” she added.</p><p>Mothebe said a blanket ban on imports will lead to sharp increases in the prices of these products, making them unaffordable for many, particularly those in low-income communities.</p><p> </p><p>If this happens, it would exacerbate food insecurity at a time when consumers are already facing high inflation and economic pressures. Coupled with this is the potential job losses arising from the unavailability of MDM product required to keep the meat processing facilities running.</p><p>ALSO READ: Egg prices increasing globally due to US shortage — Should SA take advantage and export? </p>SA has potential <p>With more than 84% of South Africa’s poultry imports coming from Brazil, it is highly possible that the country would face a chicken shortage. However, the South African Poultry Association (Sapa) holds a different view. </p><p>Izaak Breitenbach, CEO of Sapa’s Broiler Organisation, said SA has enough capability to make up for the shortfall. </p><p> </p><p>“We are currently producing about 21.5 million chickens per week, and the industry has the capacity to increase this by about another million birds per week.</p><p>He added that winter months are a period of lower demand for chicken. Therefore, the additional supply of chicken should be sufficient to prevent shortages or price increases.</p><p>“The impact of a ban on Brazilian chicken imports will not be felt immediately. Chicken imports from Brazil can take about six weeks to reach South Africa, and products dispatched before the ban is implemented will not be affected.”</p>Brazil has no compartmentalisation deal<p>Breitenbach added that if Brazil had a compartmentalisation agreement with South Africa, chicken imports from other parts of Brazil that are not affected by the bird flu outbreak would be allowed.</p><p> </p><p>“If there is a problem following a ban on Brazilian imports, it will concern MDM, not fresh or frozen chicken meat. MDM is a paste used in the production of processed meats, such as polony and sausages; it is not produced in large quantities in South Africa.”</p><p>MDM accounts for about 60% of our poultry imports from Brazil. The second-largest category is offal – products such as chicken heads, feet, gizzards, and livers. A far smaller proportion, 4.5% of Brazilian imports, comprises bone-in chicken portions such as leg quarters, thighs, drumsticks and wings.</p><p>The Citizen has reached out to the Department of Agriculture for a comment.</p>Company loses profit<p>Astral Foods’ financial results for the six months ended 31 March 2025 show the company lost 51% of its profit before interest and tax due to higher input costs.</p><p> </p><p>The company is under pressure due to increased costs and its inability to pass these costs on to consumers by raising food prices.</p><p>The results show the business was able to see more chicken during the six months. She was run over by a taxi on the side of the N2 while checking a fault on her vehicle.</p><p>In 2014, Zahara’s younger brother, Mbuyiseli, was murdered inEast London. I’m probably on 2% left and exhausted the 98% but it’s for the youngsters to know that you need to work hard and talent alone is not enough.</p><p>The 40-year-old began his PSL journey with SuperSport United, where he won three league titles. He joined Sundowns in 2011, going on to lift a further nine championships with the Tshwane-based giants.</p><p>His path to success has not been without challenges. After being loaned to Bidvest Wits during the 2013–14 campaign, Onyango returned to Sundowns stronger, playing a pivotal role in their 2016 CAF Champions League triumph. That same year, he was honoured by CAF as the African-based Player of the Year.</p><p>“The first one (title) was incredible because it was my second season in South Africa with our neighbours SuperSport United,” Onyango said while reflecting on his remarkable career.</p><p> </p><p>“The other one that I won which I think was special was I came back from a loan at Bidvest Wits back to Sundowns. I always wanted to reward them for the faith they showed me. Picture: AFP / Saul Loeb</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Experts have weighed in on how President Cyril Ramaphosa should conduct himself when he meets United States (US) President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C, on Wednesday.</p><p>In this critical meeting, Ramaphosa and his delegation will attempt to reset South Africa’s relationship with the US.</p><p>The South African delegation will also have to convince Trump that the race-based laws passed since 1994 are essential to levelling the playing field between the country’s different races.</p>Will negotiating a trade deal help?<p>Professor Anthoni van Nieuwkerk from the Thabo Mbeki School of Public and International Affairs said Ramaphosa will have to negotiate a trade deal that Trump will not refuse.</p><p>Van Nieuwkerk believes that the negotiation team should avoid spending too much time trying to prove that there is no white genocide in South Africa.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> WATCH: Is Ramaphosa in trouble? US Secretary of State Marco Rubio calls out SA ahead of Trump meeting </p> </p> </p><p>“To reset our relationship, we must put a trade deal on the table that is attractive to the Trump administration, that is where the negotiations will take place behind the scenes.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“By the time the two presidents meet in the White House, the deal will already be made, and what remains is the symbolism and the pleasantries,” he said.</p>Ramaphosa will survive the Zelensky trap<p>Van Nieuwkerk said he believed that Ramaphosa would not fall into the same trap as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.</p><p>Zelensky was embarrassed on live TV during engagements with Trump and his deputy, JD Vance, in what was described as a boxing match between heads of state.</p><p>“Zelensky went there to make a deal around minerals in Ukraine they made the deal behind the scenes, The officials worked on the deal in the White House there was going to be a photo opportunity then they started to argue and Zelensky started to be aggressive, that is a good lesson for us,” he said.</p><p> </p>What does South Africa have to offer?<p>Van Nieuwkerk said South Africa is likely to negotiate deals around the country’s minerals and key industries,</p><p>“There are deals being made regarding access to scarce minerals, in particular the platinum group; we have 80% of the world’s reserves in platinum. We also have gold and diamonds, and we have oil and gas, and we have a functional economy that can produce parts for vehicles and heavy machinery.</p><p>“We have 600 American companies in South Africa, and we offer them a gateway to the rest of Southern Africa and the region. The deal is not only what South Africa can offer, but what the continent can offer through the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) agreement. The deal ultimately must be between the US and Africa, and Cyril Ramaphosa must be a facilitator of that bigger deal,” he said.</p>Ramaphosa’s negotiation skills<p>Van Nieuwkerk said he believed that Ramaphosa has enough negotiating experience to pull such a deal off.</p><p> </p><p>“I am confident that if he is put on the spot by President Trump, he will be diplomatic and he will be cool. He will hold his views together, and he will respond as a professional,” he said.</p>The Mandela name will not work!<p>Van Nieuwkerk cautioned the negotiation team not to use the Mandela legacy to win the White House’s favour.</p><p>“To us, the Mandela name as a tactic to negotiate or bargain, I do not think it will really work. I think President Ramaphosa has his own charisma and style, and when it comes to negotiations, he matches any other African politician,” he said.</p>Trump is using “soft power” against South Africa<p>Meanwhile, Ntsikelelo Breakfast, a political analyst from the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) said Trump is well aware there is no white genocide in South Africa.</p><p> </p><p>He said South Africa had been granted an audience with Trump to begin negotiations. He described this move as using “soft power”.</p><p>“Trump is playing like a fool; he knows there is no white genocide in South Africa. Remember that he is indebted to Elon Musk, who is not neutral in this situation because he wants to have a footprint in South Africa. Musk does not want to comply with the race-inspired policies, in particular, B-BBEE [Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment,” he said.</p><p>He said he expects Trump to go into these critical negotiations hoping for a win-win situation for both countries.</p>Will South Africa change its position on Israel?<p>However, he said the danger of this could be that South Africa may be indirectly asked to change its position on Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).</p><p> </p><p>South Africa had rallied support around the world for Palestine and challenged Tel Aviv for what they described as a genocide of the Arab population in Gaza.</p><p>“I do not think that he (Trump) is going to back off on the issue of the ICJ, and I think America has a firm position with regard to its support for Israel. So, South Africa may have to compromise on that score,” he said.</p><p>ALSO READ: Steenhuisen walks a political tightrope ahead of Trump meeting</p><p>Breakfast said South Africa will have to make a wise deal so that it does not lose out on trade arrangements between South Africa and the US, such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa).</p><p>“We want to continue sending our products and services to the US market, and if we are kicked out of Agoa, that will have national consequences, and it will hit hard on ordinary people,” he said.</p>Pretoria will not compromise on certain domestic policies <p>However, Breakfast said he believed that Pretoria would not compromise on race-based laws meant to equalise the scales between different ethnic groups in the country.</p><p>“The issue of land expropriation is one that I think South Africa will not back down on, the issue of BEE [Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment], I do not think the country will back down on.</p><p>“We just might be forced not directly but indirectly on the issue of the ICJ,” he said.</p>Afrikaners who left should be allowed to stay in the US<p>On the other hand, AfriForum CEOKallie Kriel told The Citizen that he believed that the negotiations would fail if Pretoria downplays the racial tension in the country over race-based laws.</p><p>“They cannot fool the US. We believe that how trade relations could be reset is identifying what the issues are. They must discuss issues about the Expropriation Act and farm murders. If they do not speak about the problems and come up with a win-win solution, then this mission will fail,” he said.</p><p>Kriel said he believes that even if Ramaphosa and his team manage to reset the relationship between Washington and Pretoria, the 49 alleged refugees who have been resettled in the US should not be brought back to South Africa.</p><p>“They went there through a legal process. Picture: Caxton/Vaal Weekblad </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Police are investigating a case of attempted murder following a shooting incident at a taxi rank, south of Johannesburg. </p><p>The incident happened at the Meyerton taxi rank on Tuesday morning.</p>Shooting at Meyerton taxi rank<p>Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said police investigations are continuing.</p><p>“According to reports, members from two security companies were shooting at each other and one of them sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital. While the police were combing the scene at the rank, they recovered 10 AK-47 rifles and nine 9mm pistols.”</p><p>Nevhuhulwi said the motive of the shooting and the ownership of the firearms will be investigated.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Man arrested for using fake Facebook profile to lure, kidnap, and rape women </p> </p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Operation Shanela: Police arrest more than 16 000 in just one week</p><p> </p><p> </p>No school children shot<p>“The reports that one scholar was shot are not true since the police went to the school and verified that no scholar was not injured during the shooting.</p><p>“Police investigations continue, and the public is urged to report any criminal activities on the Saps Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111.”</p>Soweto taxi violence<p>Last month, three people were shot dead during taxi-related violence and route disputes in Soweto.</p><p>Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said they were investigating a case of murder.</p><p> </p><p>“The incident is believed to be taxi-related. The victims all belong to a taxi association. All possibilities will be investigated. High-calibre cartridges were found on the scene.</p><p>“At this stage, no one has been arrested. Picture: Aamir Qureshi / AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Pakistan’s Supreme Court upheld the death penalty on Tuesday for a man who beheaded his girlfriend in a case which prompted an explosive reaction from women’s rights campaigners.</p><p>Pakistani-American Zahir Jaffer, the son of a wealthy industrialist, attacked 27-year-old Noor Mukadam at his sprawling Islamabad mansion in 2021 after she refused his marriage proposal — torturing her with a knuckleduster and using a “sharp-edged weapon” to behead her.</p><p>“This is a victory for all the women of Pakistan. Picture: jackparow </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Despite having enough audience outside the country to host a festival every two years in Europe, rap artist Jack Parow doesn’t see himself seeking asylum anytime soon.</p><p>“No, I love South Africa too much. I’m South African through and through,” Jack Parow told The Citizen.</p><p>“I love going there, it’s really fun, but I’ll never… I love South Africa, it’s in my blood. This four-hour extravaganza featured some of the biggest Dutch hip-hop and rap artists performing with Jack in a sold-out venue in Utrecht.</p><p>ALSO READ: Jack Parow traumatised after being threatened with a panga by taxi drivers</p><p> </p>The Parowfest<p>Parow, whose real name is Zander Tyler, said the idea of the Parowfest came from his booking agency after they realised that he has an audience that always attends his gigs when he tours the Netherlands.</p><p>“It’s been incredible. We’ve done five of them, I think…they’ve all been sold out, and it’s been really incredible.”</p><p>The Parowfest happens every two years, but he tours Europe annually.</p><p>“One year we do festival tours, and then I do a Parowfest every second year. 3149303	有图 <p> The Stormers will head into their URC quarterfinal against defending champs Glasgow with plenty of confidence after a strong end to the pool phase. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Stormers-Zas-1.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Stormers wing Leolin Zas on the attack during their URC clash against Cardiff at the Cape Town Stadium over the past weekend.Picture: Ashley Vlotman/Gallo Images/Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>It will be a tough ask but the Stormers will be hoping to ride a wave of terrific form into the semifinals of the United Rugby Championship (URC) when they battle it out against Glasgow Warriors in their quarterfinal in Scotland next week.</p><p>The Stormers have been one of the form teams in the URC down the back straight of the pool phase, after a poor start to their season had threatened to derail their campaign early on.</p><p>After 11 rounds the Stormers had won just four games, while losing seven, and were languishing at 10th place on the URC log, leaving them in a massive battle to make it into the top eight for a place in the playoffs.</p><p>But suddenly it seemed like a switch was flipped and the Cape side have gone on to win six of their last seven pool games to power up the log to finish in fifth place, earning them a return trip to Glasgow for another knockout.</p><p>Last year the Stormers were downed 27-10 in their quarterfinal in Scotland, with Glasgow going on to upset Munster and the Bulls to lift the URC title.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> OPINION: The Bulls, and Jake White, deserve to taste URC glory </p> </p> </p><p>The defending champs will likely have to produce a similar run if they want to repeat the trick this season, but they won’t be as heavy favourites against the Stormers, as they were last season.</p><p> </p><p> </p>Great form<p>Not only are the Stormers in great form, but they also seem to be more confident on the road in Europe, which is something they have struggled with immensely over the past four seasons in the URC.</p><p>They were initially poor away again this season, losing three of their first four matches overseas, with just a 36-5 win over Zebre in Italy to boast about, while they went down 37-24 to Ospreys in Swansea, 38-7 to Edinburgh in Scotland and 36-12 to Leinster in Dublin.</p><p>But their last overseas tour will have given them a shot in the arm as they brushed aside Scarlets 29-17 in Llanelli, before being edged 38-34 by Ulster in Belfast, as discipline cost them with yellow and red cards resulting in them playing with 13 men at a stage.
