Senator Nancy Binay faced off with her brother-in-law Makati 2nd District Representative Luis Campos for the mayoral race. Nancy won. </p><p>Nancy’s candidacy was backed by her parents, Jejomar and Elenita, and brother Junjun, all former mayors of Makati. Anne, one of the Binay siblings, also supported her eldest sister Nancy. Campos’ mayoral bid, meanwhile, was supported by his wife, Makati MayorAbby Binay.</p><p>Campos’ running mate, 1st District Representative Kid Peña, won the vice mayoralty and will serve as the presiding officer of the city council.</p><p>Peña is a known political opponent of the Binays. In their 2016 mayoral race, Abby locked horns with Peña. She narrowly defeated Peña, securing 160,320 votes to Peña’s 142,257.</p><p>Peña also had a bitter electoral battle with the Binay patriarch, Jejomar in 2019, where Peña won the Makati congressional seat by just 5,806 votes. </p><p>Out of 16 council seats, nine were secured by Campos-aligned candidates under the local party Makatizens United founded by Abby, while only seven were won by councilors aligned with Nancy’s camp. </p><p><noscript><img src="https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/23285479/thumbnail" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript></p><p>The councilors under Nancy’s slate carried the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) party, the political party founded by Jejomar. </p><p>Virjhong Hilario, an ally of Campos, topped the race in Makati’s 1st District, marking his return to the city council. He is the father of outgoing councilor and television personality Jhong Hilario, who is now term-limited.</p><p>In the 2nd District, Makatizens United’s Ina Sarosa led the polls with 21,787 votes. 3149818	无图 <p> <p> </p> </p> <p> <p> </p> </p> <p>Fifty-two out of 54 party-list groups that made it to the winning circle in the 2025 elections have been proclaimed, but can those who just barely missed the cut — including Gabriela — still have a chance? </p><p>The scenario of late entries to Congress is not confined to the world of imagination, as it happened in 2024 with Akbayan, the beneficiary of the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) decision to nullify the registration papers of An Waray.</p><p>In the 2025 elections, two party-list groups are facing legal challenges that threaten to invalidate their poll victories — Duterte Youth and Bagong Henerasyon (BH). </p>Akbayan’s case <p>Akbayan was already subject to delisting in 2025, in the wake of its back-to-back losses in 2019 and 2022 elections. In the 2022 poll cycle, it placed 58th in the race in which 57 party-list groups made the cutoff. </p><p>In June 2023 though, a year after the 19th Congress convened, a Comelec division moved to void the registration of regional group An Waray over an election offense it committed a decade ago. </p><p>An Waray was punished for letting its second nominee assume a congressional seat in 2013 despite the absence of a certificate of proclamation from the Comelec. The poll body granted a 2019 petition that sought to punish An Waray for violating the party-list law.</p><p>The division ruling was not immediately executory, and An Waray exhausted all legal remedies available. The timeline is as follows:</p>June 2, 2023: The Comelec’s 2nd Division granted the petition for the cancellation of An Waray’s registration papers.August 14, 2023: The Comelec en banc denied petitioners’ appeal.September 27, 2023: The House of Representatives unseated then-An Waray representative Bem Noel after the Supreme Court ignored the group’s request for reprieve.September 16, 2024: The Supreme Court upheld the cancellation of An Waray’s registration.September 25, 2024: The Comelec belatedly proclaimed Akbayan the winner of the 2022 elections. Perci Cendaña took his oath of office before Speaker Martin Romualdez in an open plenary later the same day. <p>Had Akbayan not benefited from An Waray’s nightmare, it would have been barred from running in the 2025 elections, as the law requires party-list groups that lose two consecutive elections to sit the third one out. </p><p>But fate had other plans, and in 2025, Akbayan topped the party-list race for the first time since it joined the elections in 1998. It also secured three seats for the first time since 2004. </p>Embattled party-list groups <p> <p> </p> </p> <p> <p> </p> </p> <p>In 2025, a total of four seats could be up for grabs even after the elections, in case the two party-list groups that won them get disqualified by the Comelec.</p><p>Duterte Youth, which ranked second in the 2025 race and is entitled to three seats, is accused of misrepresentation in at least two cases filed with the Comelec, prompting the poll body to suspend its proclamation. </p><p> A disqualification case, meanwhile, was filed against BH for alleged violation of the Omnibus Election Code, particularly the provisions barring the intervention of public officers and employees in campaigns, and use of public funds. The Comelec also withheld its proclamation papers. </p><p>“Bagong Henerasyon is fully prepared to face any complaint, anytime, anywhere. But unless such a complaint is properly made public and given due process, the suspension of our proclamation — and the nullification of the votes of 319,803 people — is not just an injustice. It is a violation of our Constitution,” BH said in a statement.</p><p>“I’m telling you, Comelec, and those controlling Comelec, if you do not let us take our seats and merely allow us to speak about our advocacy for the country, we will tell the people about all the wrongdoing in Congress and Comelec, how many of you are making millions from decisions, accreditations, projects, and funds,” Duterte Youth chairperson Ronald Cardema added. </p>Who will benefit<p>If the two party-list groups lose their legal battle, up to four defeated party-list groups can benefit: Gabriela (rank 55), Abono (rank 56), Ang Probinsiyano (rank 57), and Murang Kuryente (rank 58). </p><p>That’s because Republic Act No. 7941 states that 20% of the total number of House members must come from party-list groups. The Supreme Court, in Banat vs Comelec, reinforced that position, essentially compelling the poll body to proclaim even party-list groups that do not meet the 2% vote threshold as long as they rank high enough in the elections, so that no party-list seat remains vacant. </p><p>“If considered stray, then these 2,327,549 votes [for Duterte Youth] will be excluded in the computation of party-list seats allocations, not only opening seats, but admitting new party-list groups to the winning circle,” said Emil Marañon III, counsel for the petitioners seeking to nullify Duterte Youth’s election win.</p><p>There is nothing that the defeated party-list groups can do but wait, though. We hear them, and we will act,” said Marcos, as quoted by the Palace in its release to media.</p><p>The decision comes after not even half of Marcos’ anointed Senate bets won seats in the 2025 midterm elections. It was a “decisive move to recalibrate his administration following the results of the recent elections” said the Palace. </p><p>“It’s time to realign government with the people’s expectations,” Marcos was also quoted as saying. </p><p>“The request for courtesy resignations is aimed at giving the President the elbow room to evaluate the performance of each department and determine who will continue to serve in line with his administration’s recalibrated priorities,” said Malacañang. </p><p>Without naming any of his Cabinet members, Marcos was quoted as saying: “This is not about personalities —it’s about performance, alignment, and urgency… Those who have delivered and continue to deliver will be recognized. But we cannot afford to be complacent. The time for comfort zones is over.”</p><p>While surprising and “bold,” the May 22 announcement did not come from out of nowhere. Both Marcos and Malacañang had long spoken openly about a “review” of the Cabinet, long before the May 12 elections took place.</p><p>Days after the polls, Marcos spoke to members of the Cabinet and asked them to submit a list of things they want to accomplish by October 2025, as well as their 36-month plan, or their plan for the last three years of the administration.</p><p>In a podcast interview released May 19, Marcos diagnosed the administration Senate slate’s 2025 showing by concluding that voters were “sick of politics” and “disappointed” over the government’s services.</p><p>But indications of the public’s dissatisfaction over Marcos and his administration’s performance were clear months before May 12 — a March 2025 Pulse Asia survey showed a majority neither trusted nor approved of the President. It has been republished for this year’s Palarong Pambansa.</p><p>MANILA, Philippines – The Palarong Pambansa, the premier youth sports event in the Philippines, gathers elementary and high school athletes from all over the country annually.</p><p>The Palaro also stands as a symbol of regional pride and competitive spirit.</p><p>Here’s the ranking of different regions with the most accumulated medals throughout the years.</p><p>Due to the unavailability of historical data, this chart only covers data from 2008 to 2019 and 2023. The games were halted from 2020 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.</p><p>The National Capital Region (NCR) has long dominated the Palarong Pambansa, as data from 2013 to 2024 has shown. </p><p>From 2008 to 2013, Western Visayas consistently placed second. However, in 2014, Calabarzon has taken over the second spot, maintaining this position until the 2019 games. Western Visayas reclaimed the second spot in 2023.</p><p>Reviewing historical data also reveals Central Luzon‘s upward trajectory in terms of performance. It placed 10th in 2017, climbed to 8th in 2018, achieved 6th in 2019, and secured 4th place in 2023.</p><p>In 2016, Negros Island Region Athletics Association (NIRAA) made its debut in Palarong Pambansa finishing 6th. This comes after former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III signed an executive order creating the Negros Island Region.</p><p>NIRAA participated until 2017 when it placed 4th. Its participation in the Palarong Pambansa was halted after then-President Rodrigo Duterte, revoked Aquino’s executive order citing a lack of funds.</p><p>On June 13, the Negros Island Region was finally institutionalized after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act No. 12000. She had been rushed from the upland village of Pigsag-an, nearly 30 kilometers away. By 2 pm on Monday, May 19, she was dead.</p><p>“Forty-two days after delivery is very crucial for the life of a mother,” said Dimple Olegario, senior health program officer at the Department of Health (DOH) Region X’s Family Health Cluster.</p><p>Olegario said pregnant women need to undergo eight prenatal checkups conducted by skilled healthcare professionals. The DOH’s Safe Motherhood Initiative recommends a 1-2-5 schedule: one visit in the first trimester, two in the second, and five in the third.</p><p>Andagao had been rushed to the city hall-run Justiniano Borja General Hospital (JRBGH) two days earlier due to shortness of breath.</p><p>Health officials who gathered at a public forum in a mall the day Angadao died to raise the alarm over the rising number of maternal deaths in Northern Mindanao had not yet heard of her case. But her story echoed the very warning they issued: a troubling increase in complications among mothers, which they linked to inadequate prenatal care and what they described as a “nonchalant, carefree lifestyle.”</p><p>Many of those who died were young, with some giving birth for the first time.</p><p>Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that Region X recorded a maternal mortality rate (MMR) of 5.5 per 100,000 live births in 2023 – the highest in five years, and significantly above the 4.1 rate in 2022. In 2019, the region had an MMR of 4.3, with 62 maternal deaths out of 1,458 recorded nationwide.</p><p>Olegario, the DOH-X’s focal person for safe motherhood, said high-risk pregnancies are usually identified during routine checkups. Those trained in emergency obstetric care are tasked with managing conditions such as gestational diabetes and hypertension.</p><p>She warned that women with few or no prenatal checkups face greater risks during childbirth, particularly if it’s their first pregnancy and they are between 20 and 30 years old. Risks are even higher for teenage mothers. The DOH, however, does not maintain disaggregated data on how many maternal deaths involved teenagers.</p><p>Dr. Tristan Jediah Labitad, head of the DOH-X’s non-communicable diseases cluster, said teenage mothers face higher risks of complications, both physical and mental, even in normal deliveries.</p><p>“Most likely, her womb is not fully developed,” he said, adding that teenage mothers require post-partum care because they are more likely to experience bleeding and spotting.</p><p>Labitad also warned that asymptomatic hypertension, increasingly common in people under 30 regardless of gender, should not be ignored.</p> <p> <p> </p> </p> <p> <p> </p> </p> <p>Hypertension, defined as a blood pressure reading above 140/80, is measured using a sphygmomanometer. A normal reading is 120/80. The first number, systolic pressure, measures arterial pressure during heartbeats. The second, diastolic, measures it between beats when the heart rests.</p><p>Beyond maternal health, doctors at the forum also addressed reproductive health risks from human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection that can cause cervical cancer if it is of a high-risk type.</p><p>“Anyone sexually active can be exposed to HPV,” said Dr. Vaniza Bagolbol, the DOH-X’s focal person for cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination.</p><p>Low-risk HPV types can cause genital warts around the vagina, anus, mouth, and throat. If they spread to the larynx or respiratory tract, they may cause breathing problems, medical literature shows.</p><p>Bagolbol said HPV spreads through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. A strong immune system often keeps the infection asymptomatic, which underscores the need for regular screening.</p><p>Still, “the shared facts in 2024” showed that 7,897 women in the country were diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 4,052 died, according to the DOH.</p><p>She said this is one reason the DOH, together with the Department of Education (DepEd), is pushing HPV vaccinations for girls aged 9 to 12. The vaccine protects against the HPV types that cause cancer and genital warts.</p><p>Data from the DOH-X’s health education and promotion unit showed that Northern Mindanao ranked third out of 17 regions in HPV vaccine coverage, with a 93.71% rate during the “Bakuna Eskwela” school-based immunization campaign in October and November 2024.</p><p>Bagolbol said their target was 90% of the eligible 46,804 girls. These partnerships allow businesses to secure a competitive edge, expand their market presence, and grow their operations. </p><p>For San Miguel Corporation, managing NAIA provides an opportunity to cement its position as a major player in the country’s infrastructure development.</p><p>Another important motivation is the opportunity for capability and capacity building.
