Picture: iStock </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on Wednesday announced that the zero-rated food basket will no longer be expanded.</p><p>The minister made the announcement while delivering the third budget speech in Cape Town.</p><p>Scrapping the expansion of the zero-rated food basket follows the decision not to implement a 0.5% increase in the value-added tax (VAT) this year and next.</p><p>ALSO READ: Godongwana cuts government spending to offset VAT shortfall</p>Food basket expansion<p>In the second budget speech delivered on 12 March 2025, he announced that the zero-rated food basket would be expanded. This was done to alleviate pressure on already struggling South Africans.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Sensible or underwhelming? Economists react to Godongwana’s Budget 3.0 </p> </p> </p><p>The list included edible offal from sheep, poultry, goats, swine, and bovine animals; specific cuts such as heads, feet, bones, and tongues; dairy liquid blends; and tinned or canned vegetables.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>However, in the third budget speech, he stated that this expansion would fall away. “As a result, the expansion of the zero-rated basket, which was included to cushion poorer households from the VAT rate increase, falls away.”</p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/VAT-free-food-previously.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><sup>The zero-rated food basket.</sup>New tax measures needed<p>While delivering the budget, he added that they need to propose new tax measures, aimed at raising R20 billion.</p><p>“We have allocated an additional R7.5 billion over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) to increase the effectiveness of the South African Revenue Service (Sars) in collecting more revenue.</p><p>“Part of this allocation will be used to increase collections from debts owed to the fiscus.”</p><p> </p><p>Godongwana said the taxman has indicated that this could raise between R20 billion to R50 billion in additional revenue per year.</p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: First fuel levy increase in three years – Here’s by how much</p>Sars welcomes revenue collection estimations<p>Meanwhile, Sars Commissioner, Edward Kieswetter, welcomed the revenue collection estimate of R1.986trillion for the 2025/2026 financial year, as announced by Godongwana.</p><p>“This revenue estimate comes against the backdrop of Sars’ final unaudited revenue outcome for 2024/25, which is R1.86trillion, R8.9billion more than the revised estimate.”</p><p> </p><p>He noted that, given the current tough domestic and global economic conditions, the R1.986trillion revenue estimate is a challenging estimate.</p><p>“The estimate announced by the minister imposes the responsibility on Sars to implement revenue-raising initiatives.</p><p>“Debt collection is one such. Therefore, Sars will specifically accelerate work on collecting all debt, with a specific focus on undisputed debt. 3150625	有图 <p> After the minister tried to push though VAT increases in his first two budget attempts, Budget 3.0 will still affect citizens’ pockets. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Budget-3.0-third-time-lucky.png" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: Screenshot of Budget 2025</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>It was indeed third time lucky for Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana when he delivered Budget 3.0 in parliament on Wednesday afternoon with the blessing of all the parties in the government of national unity.</p><p>Frank Blackmore, lead economist at KPMG, says probably the most impressive thing about Budget 3.0 was that we now have a budget at all, although the contents were a bit underwhelming.</p><p>“There were many questions about what we are going to do with the R75 billion deficit over the medium-term period with no VAT increase. That was answered by this budget in the form of:</p>some increases in the fuel levy of 15-16 cents per litre;an increase in borrowing with debt going up to 77.4% of gross domestic product (GDP), 1.2% more than in Budget 2.0;no expansion of the zero-rated food basket;reduced expenditure over the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) period;the budgets of frontline services such as health and education growing, but by less than the previous budgetary amounts;some additional investment will go to Sars to switch those assets in order to collect more revenue.<p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: not austerity budget, but a redistributive budget</p>Not much thought about issues confronting SA<p>Blackmore says it seemed that the budget was focused on these points without dealing with the issues confronting South Africa at this point. “There were reductions in a lot of areas that were obviously necessary due to lower revenues, except for the public sector wage bill and debt deficit which are increasing.”</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Godongwana cuts zero-rated food basket in Budget 3.0 </p> </p> </p><p>He says the negatives in Budget 3.0 are:</p><p> </p><p> </p>the increased debt and deficit taking more resources away from frontline services and economic growth initiatives, such as the social wagethe reduction in the growth of non-interest expenditureno real increase in spending to grow the economya mention that new tax proposals will come in for 2026 to cover an additional R20 billion gap for the full cost for that period.<p>He did not find much on the positive side but says the public private partnerships and continuing structural reforms, as well as Operation Vulindlela Phase 2 are positive, but are nowhere near large enough to make a meaningful difference at this point to the growth outlook.</p><p>ALSO READ: Godongwana cuts government spending to offset VAT shortfall</p>Budget 3.0 a more realistic picture of SA’s macroeconomic outlook<p>Jee-A van der Linde, senior economist at Oxford Economics Africa, says Treasury’s downwardly revised GDP growth projections and higher debt-to-GDP ratios paint a more realistic picture of South Africa’s macroeconomic outlook.</p><p>He says it is a positive takeaway that gross loan debt projections have not increased since March and Treasury still expects debt levels to stabilise, although at a higher level. Gross loan debt is expected to increase from R5.69 trillion in 2024/25 to R6.82 trillion in 2027/28.</p><p> </p><p>“Meanwhile, debt-service cost projections were lowered by R1.8 billion over the MTEF period compared to the March 2025 Budget. South Africa’s debt service costs remain alarmingly high at R1.3 trillion over the MTEF and we expect it to continue rising rapidly over the forecast period.</p><p>“South Africa’s deteriorating debt-to-GDP ratio remains a concern and we continue to maintain that gross government debt will reach 80% of GDP in the near term. The sustainability of South Africa’s fiscal outlook hinges on economic growth accelerating in the near term, as fiscal consolidation will prove challenging amid elevated spending pressures.”</p><p>Was it third time lucky for Godongwana? Van der Linde says Budget 3.0 is more sensible and depicts a stark picture of South Africa’s finances. “Markets will welcome Treasury’s commitment to fiscal consolidation.</p><p>“While not of its own making, Treasury’s credibility has been unduly dented as a result of the budget wrangling. Political parties have been climbing over each other trying to claim credit for Treasury reversing course on the tax proposals that scuppered the first and second budget attempts.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: Opposition parties clash over impact on poor</p>Very high execution risk<p>Patrick Buthelezi, economist at Sanlam Investments, says the execution risk for the budget remains very high as many spending pressures require funding, such as closing the gap created by a freeze on PEPFAR support, political party funding leading up to the local government elections and national social dialogue.</p><p>“Given the projected economic growth outlook, the pressure on the fiscus can be expected to continue. The finance minister hinted that revenue-raising measures might be introduced in the 2026 budget. Picture: Paul Harding/Getty Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Springbok tighthead locks Eben Etzebeth and Jean Kleyn will do battle when their respective sides, the Sharks and Munster, play in the quarter-finals of the United Rugby Championship.</p><p>The teams clash at Kings Park Stadium next Saturday, with the victor to face either the Bulls or Edinburgh, who play earlier in the day.</p>By the numbers<p>Etzebeth, who captains the Sharks, is the more accomplished Springbok – twice SA Rugby’s men’s player of the year and once a nominee for World Rugby’s men’s player of the year, to go with his 131 Test caps (the most by any South African).</p><p>Kleyn has enjoyed fewer accolades, with just seven caps for the Springboks and five for Ireland, and no points scored for either country. He’s also won one World Cup compared to Etzebeth’s two.</p><p>However, Kleyn was Munster’s men’s player of the year in 2023 and was in the URC’s dream team for the 2021/22 season.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Bulls must continue to do what works for them </p> </p> </p><p>He’s amassed 150 caps for the top Irish side, reaching the milestone against Benetton last weekend. He helped them win the URC trophy in 2023 to add to his 2014 Currie Cup title with Western Province.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Both 2.03m and not much difference in weight, it could be said Kleyn, 31, is only marginally less devastating on the field (or in the air during lineouts) than Etzebeth, 33. </p><p>When in form, Kleyn easily walks into the Springbok squad, and even did so ahead of Etzebeth in 2024’s end-of-year tour against Wales, though it came at a time when Bok boss Rassie Erasmus was focussing on rotation and building squad depth.</p><p>Both players featured at March’s Springbok alignment camp and will do so again this week.</p>Kleyn calls Etzebeth ‘the most dominant’ in position<p>The two played when the Sharks hosted Munster in the URC league phase in October last year, though fellow Springbok Jordan Hendrikse made the headlines with his 16 individual points, and others drew attention with 10 tries scored on the day (final score 41–24 to the Sharks).</p><p> </p><p>When Etzebeth was in the running for his World Rugby award, Kleyn described him as “by far the most dominant tighthead lock to have probably played the game in the last 10 or 15 years”.</p><p>Kleyn told media Etzebeth’s performances speak for themselves and hoped either he or fellow Springbok nominees Cheslin Kolbe or Pieter-Steph du Toit would win the award. Picture: Screengrab. </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The meeting between US President Donald Trump and President Cyril Ramaphosa started off with an extremely amicable discussion, but later descended into chaos and shifted to the topic of violence against white farmers and Afrikaners in South Africa.</p><p>Ramaphosa and Trump met at the White House in Washington on Wednesday.</p><p>The meeting comes just days after the US welcomed a group of 49 Afrikaners as “refugees”.Trump falsely claimed they are being persecuted in South Africa due to their race and are facing a “genocide”.</p><p>Wednesday’s heated meeting marks the latest in a string of unusually tense Oval Office meetings between Trump and foreign leaders.</p><p>It comes amid heightened tensions between the US and South Africa over claims by Trump and South Africa-born Elon Musk about the country’s racial equity laws, which prompted the US to recently admit white South African refugees while barring refugees from other countries.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> ‘There is doubt in Trump’s head about genocide in SA,’ Ramaphosa says [VIDEO] </p> </p> </p>Ramaphosa ambushed by Trump<p>In a high-stakes confrontation, Trump ambushed Ramaphosa with graphic footage alleging “white genocide” against South African farmers.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Trump delegation clearly came to the meeting prepared, playing old controversial videos about EFF leader Julius Malema singing “Kill the Boer, Kill the farmer”.</p><p>The videos played by the Trump administration backed up the misinformation that there are mass killings against white South Africans and Afrikaners.</p><p>Trump made unsubstantiated claims about genocide and South Africa’s treatment of white farmers.</p>WATCH: Ramaphosa tells Trump to listen to South African voices<p>[WATCH] "It will take President Trump listening to the voices of South Africans, some of whom are his good friends, like the ones who are here. He was visibly surprised.</p><p>However, Ramaphosa was calm and handled the situation well. </p><p>Trump also presented articles to Ramaphosa to prove that “very bad things are happening in South Africa”.</p><p> </p><p>Trump told Ramaphosa that South Africa is taking people’s land away from them.“Those people in many cases are being executed, and they happen to be white.”</p>Afrikaner refugees<p>When asked why he accepts refugees from South Africa and no other countries, Trump said there are “concerns” about South Africa.</p><p>“We do have a lot of people concerned with regards to South Africa, that’s the purpose of the meeting. It’s not only white farmers. It is across the board.”</p>Trump must ‘listen’<p>Ramaphosa said Trump must listen to the voices of South Africans.</p><p>“It will take President Trump listening to the voices of South Africans, some of whom are his good friends, like the ones who are here. I’m not going to be repeating what I have been saying. He is going around threatening to kill white farmers. He sings and dances. Picture: Gallo Images/Phill Magako</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Tensions flared in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria as the defence in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial pressed the lead investigator to reveal why the five accused were charged.</p><p>The trial resumed on Wednesday with further testimony from lead investigator Bongani Gininda.</p>Senzo Meyiwa murder trial continues<p>Questioning Gininda on behalf of accused one Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Advocate Charles Mnisi focused his cross-examination on what Gininda presented to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to secure the enrolment of the case in court.</p><p>Gininda had previously testified that he submitted the case docket to the NPA, which included confessions from Sibiya and accused number two, Bongani Ntanzi.</p><p>“What were the facts that you presented in that memorandum on which you requested the state to make their decision?” Mnisi asked.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> AfriForum challenges Expropriation Act in court, criticises Ramaphosa for ‘silently’ signing the law </p> </p> </p><p>Before Gininda could elaborate, state prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi objected, arguing that the question was irrelevant to the cross-examination.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Senzo Meyiwa murder trial won’t be affected, says police after investigator escapes armed robbery</p><p>“What happened when Brigadier Gininda briefed the office of the DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions] is irrelevant. </p><p>“It’s a collateral issue that, in our view, should not be canvassed during these proceedings. It is like what happens during consultation; it remains there. It shouldn’t be brought into the courtroom,” Baloyi stated.</p><p>In response, Mnisi maintained that the contents of the memorandum were directly relevant to the murder trial.</p><p> </p><p>“There’s nothing secret about it. It could have formed the basis of why these accused persons were ultimately arrested and charged with the offences they were charged with today. So there is nothing irrelevant on that,” he said.</p>Watch the trial below:<noscript></noscript><p>“We are entitled, as the defence and particularly these accused persons, to know what were the facts upon which the state decided to indict them to come and stand trial before this court.</p><p>“What is wrong with that? They are entitled to it, unless there’s something which is being hidden,” Mnisi added.</p><p>Baloyi countered by highlighting that Gininda had already presented the evidence through his affidavit, which detailed the grounds for issuing the arrest warrants.”</p><p> </p><p>“The information is already before the court,” he said.</p>State argues info is confidential<p>However, Mnisi persisted, stressing the need for clarity about the contents of the memorandum rather than the affidavit.</p><p>“I don’t know what was contained in that memorandum,” he said.</p><p>Gininda then offered to provide a summary from memory.</p><p> </p><p>“I will try to summarise because I don’t have the memorandum with me and that was done in 2020, but I do have recollection of what it contained.”</p><p>READ MORE:Will Senzo Meyiwa murder trial finally end in 2025?</p><p>Mnisi interrupted, saying, “Those are not facts”.</p><p>Baloyi again objected, asserting that the information in the memorandum was confidential.</p><p> </p><p>“Not that there’s anything to hide in the memorandum; it’s just the issue of legal principle… They are not entitled to information or documents that are filed in the B section of the docket,” Baloyi explained.</p><p>He further emphasised that the court had already been presented with the relevant facts via Gininda’s affidavit.</p><p>“It is therefore unfair to expect of this witness to regurgitate facts that have already been presented.”</p>Judge in Senzo Meyiwa murder trial intervenes<p>Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng ultimately intervened, ruling that the discussions Gininda had with senior NPA officials were privileged.</p><p>“What this witness discusses with [Shamila] Batohi is privileged; the same thing as what you discuss with your [client] is privileged, and that is the law,” Mokgoatlheng told Mnisi.</p><p>Mnisi threatened to stop the cross-examination.</p><p>“Then I’m not going to proceed.”</p><p>Responding firmly, Mokgoatlheng invoked legal precedent to support his ruling.</p><p>“I have told you what the law is. Don’t assist me. Picture: Jim Watson / AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has dismissed claims of a white genocide in South Africa, following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s meeting with United States (US) President Donald Trump.</p><p>The two leaders met at the White House in Washington D.C on Wednesday, as the South African government sought to ease diplomatic tensions with the US.</p><p>Strained relations have emerged over South Africa’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict and controversial legislation such as the Expropriation Act.</p><p>The meeting also took place just days after the US granted refugee status to a group of 49 Afrikaners citing alleged persecution.</p>Malema reacts to Ramaphosa-Trump meeting<p>During the meeting, Trump was questioned about allegations of white genocide in South Africa.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Ramaphosa says Trump meeting a success despite ambush [VIDEO] </p> </p> </p><p>The US president, however, played a compilation of videos featuring Malema singing the apartheid-era struggle song Kill the Boer, as well as footage of him advocating for land expropriation without compensation.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Donald Trump ambushes Cyril Ramaphosa in Oval Office</p><p>In response, Malema reiterated his position on the matter.</p><p>“A group of older men meet in Washington to gossip about me. No significant amount of intelligence evidence has been produced about white genocide.</p><p>“We will not agree to compromise our political principles on land expropriation without compensation for political expediency,” he stated in a post on social media platform X.</p><p> </p>AfriForum<p>AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel commented on the video clips, clarifying that they did not originate from his organisation.</p><p>“I think President Trump himself made a compilation of all these videos, which was, of course, not our compilation,” he told eNCA.</p><p>Kriel also criticised court rulings on the Kill the Boer chant and Ramaphosa’s reluctance to condemn the song.</p><p>READ MORE: Trump lashes out at SA again as AfriForum thanks US president</p><p> </p><p>“We have a court system not protecting farmers that are being murdered and the president now tries to say this is the other party.</p><p>“The worst thing of this is that the South African president refused to condemn this.”</p><p>Despite the tensions, Kriel expressed relief that the meeting did not fall apart and welcomed the opportunity for further dialogue.</p><p>“I think now the circumstances have been created for further discussions. From AfriForum’s side, we also want solutions. That is why we were willing to say we will discuss this with the ANC.”</p><p> </p>DA slams Malema, MK party<p>Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Emma Powell described the meeting as “chaotic” and “difficult”.</p><p>She praised DA leader John Steenhuisen for addressing what she termed the “radical racist” and “very destructive agendas” of Malema and the uMkhonto WeSizwe (MK) party.</p><p>“He rightfully explained that Julius Malema is not a minister and does not form part of government,” Powell told eNCA.</p><p>“I think we were all deeply shocked when we were suddenly shown these horrendous videos.</p><p> </p><p>“The shoot the boer, kill the boer sentiment cannot be tolerated in South Africa. It is indeed a call that is completely antithetical to our constitution. We must reject it,” she added.</p><p>READ MORE: Genuine genocide or a farce? What farmers at Nampo think of Trump’s refugee offer</p><p>Powell emphasised the importance of restoring trade relations, particularly in the context of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa).</p><p>“We know that Agoa is all but dead in the water. I think that it’s critically important that President Trump oppose the deal with the issue of trade tariffs, specifically in the automotive sector, and what can be done to ameliorate a breakdown or a carve out in terms of a collapse in that industry.”</p><p>She also expressed hope that Trump would attend the upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa.</p><p>Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber welcomed efforts to attract foreign investment.</p><p>“I strongly support the comments by President Ramaphosa’s delegation in the Oval Office, calling for technological investment to support our existing drive to digitally transform civics services and immigration. Picture: GCIS </p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>President Cyril Ramaphosa says it is unfair to compare the treatment of black people under apartheid to what his counterpart, US President Donald Trump, believes is happening to white Afrikaners in the country.</p><p>Ramaphosa and Trump met at the White House in Washington on Wednesday.</p><p>The meeting between Trump and Ramaphosa started off with an amicable discussion, but later descended into chaos and shifted to the topic of violence against white farmers and Afrikaners in South Africa.</p>‘No genocide’<p>In a high-stakes confrontation, Trump ambushed Ramaphosa with graphic footage alleging “white genocide” against South African farmers.</p><p>While Ramaphosa remained calm and handled the situation well, rejecting Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of widespread killings of Afrikaners, he emphasised that the situation cannot be equated to the oppression of black South Africans under apartheid.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Ramaphosa says Trump meeting a success despite ambush [VIDEO] </p> </p> </p><p>“There’s no genocide in South Africa, and of course, it is an issue of how one looks at it,” he said. “As they say, sometimes the shape of the mountain depends on which point or direction you’re looking at it. Much as he played the video and all those press clippings, in the end, I do believe that there’s doubt and disbelief in his head about all this.”</p><p> </p><p>Earlier, Ramaphosa said Trump must listen to the voices of South Africans.</p><p>“It will take President Trump listening to the voices of South Africans, some of whom are his good friends, like the ones who are here. I’m not going to be repeating what I have been saying. If there was Afrikaner farmer genocide, I can bet you these three gentlemen wouldn’t be here, including my minister of agriculture,” Ramaphosa said.</p>Trump claims refuted<p>Agriculture Minister and DA leader John also dismissed Trump’s claims of genocide against white Afrikaners.</p><p>Steenhuisen said the country has prioritised protecting white farmers, including preventing livestock theft.</p><p> </p><p>Renowned businessman Johann Rupert, who was also part of Ramaphosa’s delegation, put paid to the “white genocide” narrative Trump seemed so fond of.</p><p>Rupert said crime is a South African problem, and it occurs everywhere.</p><p>“We have too many deaths, but it’s across the board. It’s not only white farmers. Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>When a video of a girl being bullied by a group of girls surfaced – and her subsequent death – we expressed outrage. </p><p>The uproar was undeniable and we were united in saying that those who had a hand in it must be punished. </p><p>Then the conversation swirled around about what we would do if we were to find out our children were being bullied. </p><p>Yet, we have not heard anyone speak of what they would say or do if their children were the bullies. To others, they may be the reason they cannot go to school or public spaces. </p><p>We shout that they be punished but, as parents, why are we not held accountable? </p><p>Behaviours are an extension of parenting abilities. </p><p>Do we remain in contact with schools? Are we active and present parents? We must refuse to let them slip beyond our observations and possible interventions. </p><p> </p><p>While not every child is a miniature version of those that raise them – they are the products of the homes and environments that they grow up in. </p><p>ALSO READ: Operation Shanela: Police arrest more than 16 000 in just one week</p><p>They are the extensions of homes with either no rules or rules that guide them. I support Teffo and Rachoene because they support service delivery and I cannot support mediocrity,” he said. </p><p>In their response, spokesperson for the ANC in the Peter Mokaba region, Adolph Rapetsoa said: “We sympathise with Machaka for the damage caused on his vehicle. </p><p>“But we don’t agree with him on dragging the names of our leaders and organisation into the matter. They exist in communities.” </p><p>We do live in a violent society, some of the roots of which can be traced back to the past. He was quoted as saying: “I want them out… Get them out before I get you out.”</p>Politicians ‘need proper training’<p>Political analyst Prof Ntsikelelo Breakfast said: “Politicians holding positions in the GNU need proper training so they know how to represent the government in a reputable way. These ministers when they speak, you will not understand whether they are doing so on behalf of the government or representing their political parties.” </p><p>“There are things that a leader representing the government should not say in public. He was joined by four ministers, renowned businessman Johann Rupert and golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.</p><p>The meeting between Trump and Ramaphosa started off with an amicable discussion, but took a dramatic shift to violence against white farmers and Afrikaners in South Africa when the US president played videos to prove genocide in the country.</p><p>ALSO READ: ‘There is doubt in Trump’s head about genocide in SA,’ Ramaphosa says [VIDEO]</p><p>The videos which were played on a television screen in the Oval Office, featured EFF leader Julius Malema chanting “Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer”.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> SA must growl back at global bullies like Trump </p> </p> </p>Meeting fruitful<p>Despite the unsubstantiated claims made by Trump about genocide in South Africa, Ramaphosa said the meeting with Trump was fruitful.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“We were able to have a robust engagement with Trump, and it was also good to have a number of members of the delegation to field either a number of questions or make comments. Picture iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Who would have ever thought that sexy lingerie, pillow talk and all-round naughtiness may not be as effective as a good night’s sleep. That is, for better sex. </p><p>But it seems as if the best aphrodisiac is exactly that: sleep divorce.</p><p>While it is often frowned upon and considered a death blow for any relationship, sleeping separately in twin beds or even having your own bedroom completely might just be the spark that makes cuddling and sex more enticing and exciting.</p><p>A survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine last year found that more than a third of respondents occasionally or regularly sleep in another room to escape their partner’s snoring, duvet-hogging, sleep talking or general restlessness. </p><p>Men, it seems, are more likely to call it quits on bed sharing first, with 45 percent reporting they’d fled to another room, compared to 25 percent of women.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Men’s health: Don’t forget to check in your pants </p> </p> </p>It’s not about relationship distance<p>But it’s not about distance in the relationship, said psychologist and medical doctor Dr Jonathan Redelinghuys. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“We tend to associate sharing a bed with emotional closeness,” he said. “But poor sleep quality affects empathy, patience, and even sexual desire. Exhausted couples are not exactly craving candlelit connection.”</p><p>Ironically, said Dr Redelinghuys, separating physically for purposes of sleep can rekindle a connection that’s been buried under restless nights and resentment.</p><p> “When partners no longer see the bed as a potential conflict zone,” he said, “they’re more inclined to see each other with fresh eyes and a bit of intimate longing.”</p><p>Which is precisely what happened for a Reddit user and her husband, who were stuck in what she called a “sexual rut” on the channel. Their decision to sleep apart gave rise to a renewed sense of fun, even anticipation for sex. </p><p> </p><p>“It was like dating again,” she said. “Suddenly, ‘Can I come to your room tonight?’ wasn’t just a line in a movie.”</p>Couples struggle with sex and intimacy<p>Sex educator Lisa Welsh of Save That Spark, said that more couples are struggling with dilemmas about sex and intimacy. </p><p>“They think they’ve lost their chemistry,” she said. “But often, it’s just buried under life’s stresses, sleep deprivation, hormonal disruption, and the frustration of never feeling truly rested.”</p><p>Also Read: Naps allow you to recharge but it’s all about timing</p><p> </p><p>Welsh said that removing the pressure to perform every night, whether it be sexually or simply stopping snoring can enhance sexual spontaneity. </p><p>“When sex stops being an obligation and becomes a conscious choice, it often improves in both frequency and quality,” she said. “Sleep divorce, done with communication and intention, gives space for that.”</p><p>The American Academy of Sleep Medicine survey noted a link between poor sleep and increased relationship conflict. Lack of sleep impairs “empathetic accuracy” which means you’re less able to read your partner’s emotional cues, said Dr Redelinghuys. </p><p>In other words, tired people face more conflict between one another and intimacy declines.</p><p> </p>Tired people face more conflict<p>Still, for some, the idea remains unsettling. </p><p>Another Reddit user was blunt about sleep divorce. </p><p>“I can intellectually understand it works for some people. But I would be miserable doing that.” </p><p>Others were far more enthusiastic about the concept: </p><p> </p><p>“We have more intimacy because of it,” another post read. “We still cuddle, talk, and have sex. Weekends we sleep together. It took a while to adjust, but it works.”</p><p>“Why would it matter whether you’re next to your boyfriend when you’re literally unable to be aware of his presence? Trash that idea. It’s just sleep,” suggested another Reddit user.</p><p>Welsh said that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. </p><p>“For some couples, shared sleep is sacred,” she said. “For others, it’s war of the Roses. The key is permission. Picture: Gallo Images/Jeffrey Abrahams</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Finance minister Enoch Godongwana must have been looking over his left(ist) shoulder to see if his revolutionary comrades were buying his message yesterday that the 2025 budget was a “redistributive” and not “austerity” one. </p><p>He and his colleagues in the department and in the Treasury are repeatedly accused by the socialists and wannabe Marxists of selling out to capital and embarking on “neoliberal” programmes which only extend the free market status quo. </p><p>On the other hand, the very people he is supposed to be kowtowing to – the capitalists – accuse him and the ANC, which is the leading party in the government of national unity (GNU), of embarking on the road to communism. </p><p>Of course, no-one who has a basic understanding of economics, or of the situation on the ground in South Africa, would agree with either or these sentiments because, like the country itself, the economic policy currently being followed has a bit of everything. </p><p>What is apparent, though, in the financial plan handed down by Godongwana is that, perhaps, at last, the powers-that-be (read the ANC majority in the GNU) are coming to the realisation that South Africa cannot continue to spend like the proverbial drunken sailor and should start cutting its simple coat to suit its lessthan-lavish cloth. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Sensible or underwhelming? 3150605	有图 <p> The two men accused of killing Brandon Pretorius during his sister’s birthday celebration remain in custody. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Gavel-1200x900-2.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The two men accused of the murder of the 27-year-old Brandon Pretorius will remain behind bars until Tuesday next week after applying for bail yesterday in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court. </p><p>Yesterday, Ruan Beetge, 35, and Gordan Westraad, 45, were accused of Pretorius’ murder after assaulting him on 25 April. He later died in hospital. </p><p>During his bail application, Beetge said he was the breadwinner and relied on his income from TikTok as a content creator. </p>Theft accusation<p>On 26 April, Pretorius was out with his younger sister to celebrate her 18th birthday at Malbroer pub and grill when he picked up trouble with Beetge and his friends, who accused him of stealing a cellphone. </p><p>The victim’s mother, Lisa Pretorius, burst out in tears when asked about how the family was coping with his death. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Body found in pit toilet linked to 2023 missing persons case </p> </p> </p><p>“So those guys thought they were God and took away a life? They should have known what would happen if you jumped on someone’s head. It’s cruel, it’s not human,” she said. </p><p> </p><p> </p>‘He was the only one who got me’<p>Pretorius said she hadn’t slept properly since her son was attacked and died a few days later. </p><p>ALSO READ: 7 teens appear in court after shocking assault video goes viral</p><p>“There’s a hole in my heart, a hole in my house and a hole in my life,” she sobbed. “He was my firstborn and out of my three children, he was the only one who got me. I don’t know how to explain it. 3150604	有图 <p> Between 2017 and 2022, Doctor Nkurube Maruma robbed homes and raped victims, the youngest being 15 years old. </p> <p> <img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Serial-Rapist.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript> <p>Picture: 3d illustration</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A 34-year-old Mamelodi serial rapist’s reign of terror in which he broke into numerous households, robbing his victims and then raping women while threatening them with a weapon has received a jail term of over 400 years.</p><p>Doctor Nkurube Maruma appeared in the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday, where the sentence was handed down.</p>Jail term<p>The serial rapist received 491 years in prison for 19 rapes, 15 housebreakings and robberies with aggravated circumstances and other related charges.</p><p>The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently with the life imprisonment term, with Maruma declared unfit to possess a firearm.</p><p>ALSO READ: Man arrested for using fake Facebook profile to lure, kidnap, and rape women</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> ‘There’s a hole in my heart and house’ – mother of slain Brandon Pretorius </p> </p> </p>Court proceedings<p>National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the serial rapist pleaded not guilty and denied all allegations.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“However, the prosecutor Advocate Vusimuzi Tshabalala presented DNA evidence linking Maruma to the crimes and led compelling testimonies from the victims. During sentencing, Maruma, through his legal representative, asked the court to deviate from imposing the prescribed minimum sentences because he was young when committing the offences and could not fully comprehend the magnitude of his offences.”</p>Mitigation<p>Maruma asked the court to consider his unfortunate upbringing when imposing the sentence.</p><p>However, Tshabalala opposed the request, arguing that Maruma was 26 years old when he began offending, fully aware of his actions, and showed no remorse for the offences because Maruma laughed and mocked victims during their testimonies, claiming to be bewitched.</p><p>Tshabalala said, the serial rapist preyed on women and children who are regarded as the most vulnerable people in society by unlawfully entering their houses, robbing and raping them.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ:Operation Shanela: Police arrest more than 16 000 in just one week</p>‘No remorse’<p>Mahanjana said Judge Mashudu Munzhelele agreed with the state and emphasised that Maruma showed no remorse and mocked victims’ suffering during the trial.</p><p>“The judge said Maruma was not a productive member of society, he committed crimes instead of seeking honest work and terrorised his community through calculated, repeated criminal acts.</p><p>“In addition, Judge Munzhelele said the sentence imposed should send a strong message that Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and similar crimes will not be tolerated. Therefore, the court found no substantial and compelling circumstances to justify a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentences,” Mahanjana said.</p><p> </p>Reign of Terror<p>Maruma’s reign of terror was committed between October 2017 and August 2022.</p><p>Between 2017 and 2018, Maruma committed these offences in Limpopo province while he was still residing there.</p><p>Mahanjana said that when Maruma moved to Pretoria, he continued with his modus operandi from 2019 until 2022, when he was arrested.</p><p>“During this period, Maruma broke into 15 households, his oldest rape victim was a 38-year-old woman, while his youngest rape victim was a15 year old girl.”</p><p> </p>Arrest<p>“On 1 October 2017 at about 02H00 Marumo raped the 38-year-old-woman at her home in Limpopo while she had gone an outside toilet to relive herself. On a different incident Marumo raped the 15-year-old girl in the presence of her mother after he broke into their home in the middle of the night,” Mahanjana said.</p><p>Maruma was finally arrested on 14 August 2022, shortly after raping and robbing another victim of three cell phones and two laptops.</p><p>The victim alerted a neighbour, who, while searching the area, stopped a police vehicle that was passing and reported the incident. Police later spotted and arrested Maruma.</p>GBV<p>Acting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Advocate Marika Jansen Van Vuuren, commended the prosecutor for his dedication and resilience in securing the conviction.</p><p> </p><p>“This landmark sentence sends a powerful message that crimes of gender-based violence (GBV) will be met with the full might of the law. Picture: X / @thedtic</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Minister of Trade and Industry, Parks Tau, provided a brief outline of his team’s engagements with officials from the United States. </p><p>Tau addressed the media on Wednesday evening as the dust settled on a frenetic meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Cyril Ramaphosa in a packed Oval Office. </p><p>Trade relations were identified as a key objective of the trip to the US, with Tau discussing tariffs, minerals, and the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa).</p>Framework agreement submitted<p>Tau, along with Agricultural Minister John Steenhuisen, said the two had been in talks with their US counterparts since Monday. </p><p>At the first meeting of trade representatives, US officials provided feedback on areas where the nations may not have aligned. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Ramaphosa says Trump meeting a success despite ambush [VIDEO] </p> </p> </p><p>Tau said the SA delegation relayed this feedback back home, resulting in a revised proposal submitted on Wednesday.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“We have submitted a proposal to the United States with regards to a framework agreement, focusing on issues related to trade and investment,” said Tau.</p><p>The proposal identified areas for increased trade and access to each party’s markets, while illustrating the benefits of keeping channels as open as possible.</p>Agoa still before Congress<p>On Agoa, Tau said that South African officials were informed that the agreement was still before Congress and would be settled later.</p><p>“Having met with the trade ministers in Africa at the recent African Continental Free Trade Area Council of Ministers, we have agreed to develop a collective approach with regard to Agoa,” said Tau.</p><p> </p><p>He added that a US-Africa trade forum, at which the African leaders would present this collective agreement, was in the pipeline.</p><p>“As South Africa, we have it in our document that the reauthorisation of Agoa is important,” Tau said.</p><p>The minister highlighted the role of South Africa’s neighbours in negotiations through the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu).</p><p>“The context of discussing Sacu is because we negotiate tariffs as a customs union, and this is one of the areas that the US required a bit more elaboration.</p><p> </p><p>“We agreed that we would have the issues on tariffs and non-tariff barriers added, which are the issues we added yesterday,” Tau explained.</p>Tariff implications<p>Tau insisted that South Africa was a positive contributor to the US’s interests.</p><p>The minister claimed that 77% of the products that the US accessed in South African markets were done so tariff-free.</p><p>“When we talk tariffs, we are only relating to them in relation to the products that are not listed in the 77%.</p><p> </p><p>“We also indicated the reality that with regards to the main products we sell into the US, these would include some of our minerals, minerals even under the reciprocal tariffs have been excluded,” he explained.</p><p>Tau said South Africa supplied 12 of the US’ priority minerals, and it was the primary supplier of nine of them.</p><p>Other trade avenues mentioned were the establishment of digital opportunities and South Africa gaining access to US liquefied natural gas.</p>Equity equivalent <p>Concerns about employment equity hampering potential US investment were addressed, with Tau stating that at least 10 US companies were benefiting from an existing accommodation.</p><p> </p><p>Tau explained that South Africa had a programme to help bridge employment equity gaps called the Equity Equivalent Programmes for Multinationals.</p><p>These equity equivalent programmes allow foreign companies to offset their black economic empowerment requirements against skills development or socio-economic programmes.</p><p>“They are participating in a manner that enables supply and enterprise development.
