Photo: BackpagePix</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Wydad Athletic have finally confirmed the departure of head coach Rulani Mokwena.</p><p>The Moroccan outfit’s announcement comes weeks after the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach was placed on “special leave” following a string of poor results.</p><p>ALSO READ: Ncikazi praises Pirates youngsters after win over SuperSport Utd</p><p>Mokwena joined Wydad ahead of the Botola Pro League season after being sacked by Mamelodi Sundowns, amid fanfare. However, things did not go as planned and South African coach was sacked before the campaign ended.</p><p>Now Wydad have confirmed that they have terminated Mokwena’s contract with immediate effect. </p><p>“Wydad Athletic and Rulani Mokwena have mutually agreed to terminate their contract with immediate effect,” read the club statement on Tuesday night.</p><p>“The club expresses its deepest gratitude to coach Mokwena and his technical staff for their unwavering commitment, hard work and sacrifices during a challenging season.”</p><p>In the same statement, Mokwena said his goodbye to Wydad and wished the club well in the next season.</p><p>As I say goodbye, I carry unforgettable memories from Wydad, a club that will forever remain in my heart,” said Mokwena.</p><p>“I wish the team, staff, and fans tremendous success in the new season and the Club World Cup. May you continue to make history and inspire us all. Picture: GCIS</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced how the government will get the money that was intended to be collected from the value-added tax (VAT) hike.</p><p>Delivering his third budget speech in Cape Town on Wednesday, he said the shortfall that was supposed to be made up by the VAT increase will now be made up from reducing government spending over the medium term by R68 billion.</p><p>“Our focus going forward is threefold: balancing the budget through spending efficiencies, strengthening revenue collection, and giving expression to the medium-term development plan.”</p>Why cut government spending?<p>Godongwana said VAT will remain 15%, to show government’s commitment to listening to South Africans.</p><p>In his second budget, the minister proposed a VAT increase of 0.5% this year and another 0.5% next year.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Sensible or underwhelming? Economists react to Godongwana’s Budget 3.0 </p> </p> </p><p>He stated that the decision to cut additional spending was made without compromising the fiscal strategy of maintaining sustainable public finances. These reductions are primarily aimed at provisional allocations that have not yet been assigned to votes.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Simply put, this means baseline allocations across all spheres of government remain largely unchanged.”</p><p>ALSO READ: How government can save R12 billion a year – Treasury agency findings</p>What will the government cut?<p>He made reference to an open letter from Sarah Stein, a medical student at the University of Cape Town. The letter outlined the state of a public hospital and the emotional toll of working in a space without the basic resources needed to help people.</p><p>That letter is part of the reason he saw the need to address spending pressures to restore critical frontline services and invest in infrastructure, which is critical for improving access to basic services and lifting economic prospects.</p><p> </p><p>The total allocated spending will amount to R6.69 trillion over the medium term. The budget also proposes additional spending of R180.1 billion, which he said is lower than the R232.6 billion proposed during the second budget. </p>Breakdown of allocations<p>Godongwana gave a breakdown of how the R6.69 trillion will be allocated. The provincial education sector’s baseline for the 2025 MTEF is R1.04 trillion, and an additional R9.5 billion will be allocated over the medium term to retain teachers in classrooms and hire more staff.</p><p>An additional R10 billion has been allocated to the baseline, as announced during the budget on 12 March, to expand access to early education, which remains unchanged.</p><p>“This will increase the ECD subsidy from R17 per child per day to R24. The additional funding will also support increased access to Early Childhood Development (ECD) for an additional 700,000 children, up to the age of five years.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: How did government spend R2.04 trillion in one financial year?</p>More medical staff to be employed<p>Godongwana stated that the provincial health sector budget is R845 billion over the medium term.</p><p>“This budget will be increased by R20.8 billion over three years to employ 800 post-community service doctors, essential goods and services, and a reduction of accruals. This increase will also help the sector address personnel budget pressures.”</p><p>The allocation for 2025/26 has been increased from R1.8 billion to R3 billion for the Department of Defence.</p><p> </p><p>“R1.4 billion is allocated to support the preparations for the upcoming local elections.</p><p>“R885 million of the allocation is for the Independent Electoral Commission and R550 million for the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force to maintain public order.”</p>Potential savings<p>He noted that SA’s economy has underperformed for the last decade, meaning less tax revenue was generated, but increased social spending, widened budget deficits, and accelerated debt accumulation were required.</p><p>“To be successful, our strategy of maintaining fiscal discipline while investing in growth demands that we prioritise high-impact expenditures.</p><p> </p><p>“These are expenditures that deliver economic returns while eliminating inefficiencies, wastage and leakage that too often plague the government’s spending.”</p><p>Godongwana said the Treasury has reviewed more than R300 billion in government spending since 2013, with the aim of identifying duplications, waste, and inefficiencies.</p><p>They have identified potential savings of R37.5 billion over time through improved oversight and operational changes resulting from these reviews.</p>Closure of underperforming programmes<p>“Going forward, underperforming programmes will be closed as the 2026 MTEF budget process undergoes redesign.</p><p>“New reforms will target infrastructure planning and implementation across provinces and municipalities,” he added.</p><p>A data-driven approach to detecting payroll irregularities will replace the more costly method of using censuses. 3150649	有图 <p> Economists are divided over whether the Reserve Bank will cut the repo rate or be cautious and keep it unchanged </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Inflation-economists.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>As inflation ticked up by only 0.1% in April, consumers are wondering if this means that the Reserve Bank will cut the repo rate next week. </p><p>Economists have previously said that due to various challenges, an increase will not happen before the second half of the year.</p><p>Statistics SA announced this morning that the inflation rate for April increased to 2.8% from 2.7% in March.</p><p>The main contributors were housing and utilities (4.4%) and food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.0%), while goods price inflation eased from 2.0% in March to 1.7% in April, while services inflation rose from 3.5% to 3.8%.</p><p>Jacques Nel, head: Africa Macro at Oxford Economics Africa, says April’s inflation rate is slightly higher than expected, but no cause for concern. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Consumer inflation slightly higher in April </p> </p> </p><p>“Core inflation continued to ease, and indications are that fuel prices will provide further disinflationary impetus in upcoming inflation rate releases. The latest figure is higher than our estimate of 2.6% and the consensus estimate of 2.7%.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“The April print is the first upside inflation surprise after a string of surprises where inflation was lower than expected. A main factor behind expectations of further disinflation in April was a roughly 3% monthly drop in fuel prices.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Consumer inflation slightly higher in April</p>Inflation low, but US Fed kept repo rate unchanged – Nedbank economists<p>Busisiwe Nkonki and Johannes (Matimba) Khosa, economists at the Nedbank Group Economic Unit, say the increase in inflation was slightly above their forecasts of 2.7%.</p><p>Does the surprisingly lower inflation mean that we can expect a repo rate cut next week when the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) has its bimonthly meeting?</p><p> </p><p>Nkonki and Khosa say the MPC will have to weigh the benign inflation outlook against the potential upside risks that could emanate from the highly volatile and uncertain global environment. They also point out that the US Fed has decided to keep interest rates unchanged in May and assess the impact of the tariffs.</p><p>“We expect the Sarb to take a similar move next week, leaving interest rates unchanged. However, economic fundamentals show that there is still room for further cuts as monetary policy is still restrictive.”</p><p>They point out that the upward pressure on the inflation rate mainly came from food prices, which continued to increase off a low base, while housing and utilities also contributed and outweighed the impact of fuel deflation.</p><p>ALSO READ: What does lowest inflation in 5 years mean for repo rate?</p><p> </p>Inflation expected to remain relatively subdued in 2025<p>“We forecast inflation to remain relatively subdued in the second quarter before drifting moderately upwards in the second half of the year. However, it will still average a muted 3.6% in 2025. During the second quarter, the downward pressure will mainly emanate from low fuel prices.</p><p>“Global oil prices are expected to remain low due to excess supply as a result of subdued demand, higher stockpiles in the US and increased output from OPEC. At the same time, the rand has recovered some ground from the US tariff shock, hovering around R18.00/$, up from R18.59/$ at the end of April.”</p><p>However, they warn that crude oil prices could start trending slightly higher during the second half of the year. </p><p>“Easing US-China trade tensions suggests that the tariff hikes could be less aggressive and therefore, the damage to global growth could be reduced.</p><p> </p><p>“Food prices will also increase as the base continues to normalise and global food inflation rises. Even so, the upward pressure will partly be contained by crop prices, which will benefit from good rains.</p><p>“The biggest concern is the rand, which, despite its recent recovery, remains vulnerable to the persistent uncertainty in the global economy.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Reserve Bank keeps repo rate unchanged as expected</p>Although inflation is low, repo rate will remain unchanged – FNB economist<p>Koketso Mano, senior economist at FNB, says with an update of today’s data, FNB’s economists see headline inflation remaining stable in May at below 3% and with marginal monthly inflation. </p><p> </p><p>“Some monthly pressure on food inflation will continue to be mitigated by fuel price declines while core inflation remains benign.</p><p>“We still foresee muted inflation over the next few months. Despite a rising trend into the second half of the year, inflation should remain below the target midpoint, supported by soft oil prices, a recovery in the rand’s value and weak economic activity. Headline inflation should average around 3.5% this year, down from 4.4% last year.”</p><p>Mano says the removal of the marginal impact that a Vat increase would have had on inflation should further assist with containing inflation expectations and supporting household spending growth.</p><p>However, she points out that growth forecasts were downgraded from nearly 2% at the start of this year to closer to 1% currently, weighing on employment prospects.</p><p>“This weak economic environment will weigh on pricing power and sustain space for easier monetary policy. However, a turbulent global environment and risk aversion, especially with local fiscal slippage, will likely keep the Sarb cautious.</p><p>“We predict that interest rates will remain unchanged at the May meeting, but apart from a wait-and-see approach that caters for global uncertainties, there is ample space for the committee to continue cutting interest rates.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Inflation unchanged, but economists do not expect repo rate cut</p>Moderation of core inflation was good sign<p>Casey Sprake, economist at asset manager Anchor, says the moderation in core inflation, which excludes volatile components such as food and energy, which eased to 3.0% from 3.1% in March, suggests a continued softening of underlying inflationary pressures in the local economy, reflecting a broader trend of subdued pricing momentum across non-volatile goods and services.</p><p>“However, a notable exception to this trend was food and non-alcoholic beverages, where inflation accelerated to 4.0%, the highest annual rate since September 2024. The primary driver behind this surge was higher meat prices, particularly for beef products such as stewing beef, mince and steak.</p><p>“Meat prices increased by 2.3% between March and April, the biggest monthly gain since January 2023. </p><p>“As the largest component within the basket, meat alone accounts for 5.1% of total household spending, meaning consumers acutely feel these price increases, especially lower-income households where food constitutes a higher share of overall expenditure.</p><p>“Conversely, fuel prices remained a major disinflationary force, helping to anchor headline inflation. The sustained softness in global oil prices (despite rand volatility) has played a key role in tempering domestic inflation. </p><p>“This not only eases direct costs for consumers at the pump but also reduces input and transport costs for businesses, indirectly alleviating pressure on broader price levels.”</p><p>ALSO READ: What lowering the inflation target will mean for SA</p>Latest inflation data strengthens case for repo rate cut – Anchor<p>Sprake says from a macroeconomic perspective, the latest inflation data strengthens the case for the MPC to cut the repo rate. </p><p>“With core inflation easing, wage growth muted and consumer demand soft, real interest rates remain in restrictive territory.</p><p>“This means that current monetary policy is still exerting a significant dampening effect on the economy. Abongwe says the limelight has become less stressful with time.</p><p>“I got used to it, obviously. At this current moment and age, I don’t find it that stressful anymore; however, sometimes I do think it comes with a lot of pressure, as people are always obviously watching. to the United States (US).</p><p>On Tuesday, AfriForum submitted an application to the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, seeking an order declaring the Expropriation Act unlawful and unconstitutional. president, Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Chairperson Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane.</p><p> </p><p> </p>AfriForum challenges Expropriation Act<p>In an affidavit, AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel argued that certain sections of the Expropriation Act contain “inherent contradictions which render the whole Act unconstitutional”.</p><p>He contended that the Act introduces substantial provisions impacting property owners, particularly regarding the payment of just and equitable compensation. </p><p>Kriel also highlighted that the Act affects the legal recourse available to affected parties in courts at all levels, including the ConCourt.</p><p>While he acknowledged that the outdated 1975 Expropriation Act required revision to align with the current constitution, Kriel expressed opposition to the new Act’s allowance for nil compensation.</p><p> </p><p>“The Expropriation Act has been controversial and has elicited broad debate from various walks of life, and is of significant public interest and importance,” the affidavit reads.</p><p>READ MORE:Expropriation: Another land reform bill in the works</p><p>Kriel further alleged that President Ramaphosa “silently” assented to and signed the Expropriation Bill into law on 24 December 2024, after a five-year legislative process. </p><p>However, the decision was only made public when the law was published in the government gazette on 24 January 2025, more than a month later.</p><p> </p><p>He noted that the Act has not yet come into effect, as its implementation date must be determined by the president through proclamation. </p><p>Kriel described the delay in gazettetting the Act as “inexplicable,” arguing that it denied Members of Parliament (MPs) the opportunity to challenge the legislation directly in the ConCourt.</p><p>“It is clear that the president obstinately pushed ahead despite valid concerns and controversy regarding certain provisions of the Expropriation Act.”</p>Nil compensation<p>Kriel emphasised that Section 12(3) of the Act, which permits zero compensation, opens the door for potential abuse of public power. </p><p> </p><p>He warned that any expropriating authority, including “poorly managed” local municipalities, could take land without monetary payment.</p><p>“The Act also has far-reaching and negative effects on property rights, economic stability, food security, the viability of farming enterprises, economic freedom and the like.”</p><p>He also raised concerns that the law allows a property owner to be deprived of their property while legal proceedings over the expropriation are still ongoing – proceedings that could take years to resolve.</p>Expropriation Act a ‘real threat’<p>Meanwhile, AfriForum’s Head of Public Relations, Ernst van Zyl, issued a statement criticising the legislation.</p><p> </p><p>He contended that the Act had “serious flaws” and was a “real threat” to the constitutional right to private property.</p><p>“We have heard them highlight their objectives, and we believe them,” Van Zyl said, referring to the ANC’s advocacy for nil It sets United Kingdom-based South African performer Nasreen’s music apart from a pack of wannabes. Even as a little girl, I was constantly writing and finding new ways to express myself. Singing was another passion of mine, but it took time before I truly believed I could take it further. </p><p>When I finally realised, I could combine my love for storytelling with music, it felt like magic, and I knew I wanted to do it for as long as I could.</p><p> </p><p>You then moved to the UK a year and a bit ago…</p><p>I moved to Edinburgh, Scotland in December 2023, and it’s been incredibly inspiring creatively. </p><p>The change of scenery sparked new ideas, but I’ll admit it’s also created a bit of distance from the music community I worked hard to build back home.</p><p>Breaking into a new market without an existing local network is a challenge- but I’m lucky to have a strong support system in South Africa that continues to back me. </p><p> </p><p>I also see this as an opportunity to bring a proudly South African voice to this side of the world, and that’s something I’m proud of.</p><p>Also Read: U2’s ‘How to Reassemble an Atomic Bomb’ is a satisfying throwback</p><p>Let’s talk about your creative process.</p><p>I’d describe my writing as a little dreamy but conversational. I like to play between literal storytelling and emotion. </p><p> </p><p>Sometimes it’s a clear sentence pulled straight from a journal, and sometimes it’s just a feeling I’m trying to catch.</p><p>What comes first usually varies. Sometimes a single lyric will come to me, and I’ll build the melody and song around it. Other times, I’ll be playing guitar, and the words arrive.</p>Music of melancholy and nostalgia<p>Your EP Seasons was just released.</p><p>Seasons is really a collection of feelings. </p><p> </p><p>The melancholy comes from nostalgia, those quiet, reflective moments where we realise something beautiful has passed. But the joy is in the fact that we got to experience those moments at all. </p><p>Whether it’s childhood, love, or friendship, the sadness only exists because it mattered. And that’s something to be grateful for.</p><p>How do the songs on Seasons relate back to your state of beingwhencreating?</p><p>That’s such a layered question, I love it. Each song reflects a shift or turning point I was going through at the time. </p><p>Winter Baby came from quiet, introspective moments in our apartment. How Is Summer Over was written after a trip back home to South Africa, filled with all that post-visit reflection. </p><p>Scared of This Part captured a moment of vulnerability and growth, while Keep Scrolling was tied to nostalgia and a kind of digital attachment to an earlier version of myself.</p><p>I was evolving as the seasons changed, and that’s all over the music.</p><p>Would you say that there is an existential element to your music?</p><p>Yes, definitely. I think there’s an underlying question in all my music- about meaning, memory, connection, and who I am or where I’m going. </p><p>I’m often exploring how we hold on to moments, what we choose to remember, and who we become in the process. So even when the lyrics feel personal or intimate, there’s usually a bigger question in the background.</p>‘I hope my music reaches people who feel a little unseen’<p>How do you feel your music will support people right now as the world seems to become crazier by the minute?</p><p>I hope my music reaches people who feel a little unseen or in-between, like me. </p><p>Representation really matters, and you don’t often hear the voice of a South African Indian female telling her story through song. </p><p>If even one girl listens and thinks, “maybe I can do this too,” then that’s everything to me. </p><p>Emotionally, I want my music to be a soft space people can come back to. Intellectually, I hope the lyrics spark thought or at least feel real enough to sit with for a while.</p><p>What do you miss most aboutMzansi?</p><p>The warmth and friendliness of South Africans is truly unmatched. its conditions for a ceasefire, but declining to give a time frame.</p><p>Moscow has for weeks defied Western pressure for a full, unconditional and immediate truce in Ukraine, where its more than three-year offensive has killed tens of thousands of people.</p><p>Despite direct talks in Istanbul with Ukrainian officials and a call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump earlier this week, the Kremlin has not yielded to pressure to halt its attacks.</p><p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Moscow — which holds the upper hand on the battlefield — is trying to “buy time” to continue its offensive and grab more land.</p><p>After his call with Trump on Monday, Putin said that Russia would present its ideas of a “memorandum” on unconditional ceasefire, which was first suggested by Trump, in March.</p><p>But Russia has consistently rejected a 30-day halt in fighting proposed by the West and outlined hardline demands for a offer “just broad terms that would allow us to move towards a ceasefire” and for peace negotiations to continue.</p><p>The Vatican has been floated as a potential place for negotiations to take place, with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni saying Tuesday that Pope Leo XIV would be willing to host such talks.</p><p> </p><p>But the Kremlin said Wednesday that there has been no decision on a Not just because it is one of writer, producer and actor Tina Fey’s finest works since probably 30 Rock, but because it is exceptionally entertaining.</p><p>The show is also thought-provoking at the same time and, if you watch and listen carefully, asks all the right questions everyone in every stage of love must ask and answer.</p><p>Imagine three couples, middle-aged and likely upper-middle class. For years, they have been spending at least four weekends away together annually. Then, interpersonal relationships are tested to the max when one member of the group leaves his wife and eventually hooks up with a much, much younger woman. In many ways, we can all relate to that. Someone in anyone’s extended circle is probably guilty of such indulgence.</p><p>Anyway, Tina Fey plays Kate, a spreadsheet-wielding control freak who plans the seasonal getaways. She’s married to the ever diplomatic Jack, played by Will Forte, whose conflict resolution skills are tested when his mate Nick, played by the brilliant Steve Carell, announces he’s leaving his wife of 25 years, Anne. It takes place when Anne throws a surprise wedding vow renewal to celebrate the pair’s anniversary.</p>News of affair went down like a lead balloon<p>Needless to say, this all went down like a lead balloon or, in this instance, with a detonation. Instead, Fey’s humour this time is as dry as a tumbleweed, and the script plunges into deep emotional murkiness, bounced up with fantastic comedic wit, and then down again. It takes audiences on a tremendously moreish ride.</p><p>Lines like “even in a throuple someone’s got to clean the air fryer” and “your face has always been loud” through to explanations to the middle-aged what sexual fluidity means. It’s all highly relatable and oh so very close to home for many. But the show is not camp. It’s not boring for a moment, and it demands reflection in between.</p><p> </p><p>Fey, along with partners Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, created the eight-part series as an extended replay and redo of a 1981 film by Alan Alda, who wrote, directed, and starred in the flick opposite Carol Burnett, also called The Four Seasons.</p><p>If you enjoyed The White Lotus and even shows like Modern Family and Ray Donovan, then you will love The Four Seasons. It’s light and dark, and while the final season of You may be stealing the limelight on Netflix, this is a show that must feature high on anyone’s to-watch list.</p><p>Beware of leaving the telly on when kids are around though. It’s definitely not for them. There’s nudity, talk of masturbation, all gender sexual activity and foul mouthing. Picture: iStock</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s third draft of the widely disputed budget has given little relief for consumers of cigarettes and alcohol.</p><p>The minister delivered his second budget speech in three months on Wednesday after budget 2.0 collapsed over the proposed hike in Value Added Tax (Vat). </p><p>Godongwana’s first attempt in February was postponed without a word being spoken, and hopes are high that this version will be voted for by the national assembly. </p>Excise duties still up<p>As with the previous speech, excise duties were not specifically mentioned, but were detailed in an accompanying document. </p><p>“The March 2025 Budget Review outlined tax proposals for 2025/26 and 2026/27. Except as otherwise indicated below, these proposals stand unchanged, including for personal income tax, transfer duties and excise duties,” the May budget overview stated.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Sensible or underwhelming? He announced the fuel levy will increase for the first time in three years.</p><p>Godongwana, while delivering the budget on Wednesday in Cape Town, stated that the levy increase is the only new tax proposal he is announcing in the latest version of his budget.</p><p>“It remains vital that we still take actions to increase revenue to protect and bolster frontline services, while expanding infrastructure investments to drive economic activity.</p><p>“To this end, this budget proposes an inflation-linked increase to the general fuel levy.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: Alcohol and cigarette prices will increase — here’s by how much</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Sensible or underwhelming? This will take effect from 4 June 2025.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>He, however, did note that this alone will not close the fiscal gap over the medium term.</p><p>In the second budget speech delivered on 12 March 2025, Godongwana did not increase the fuel levy, stating that the decision was made to help South Africans cope with the high cost of living. However, he has made a U-turn after scrapping the value-added tax (VAT) increase.</p><p>ALSO READ: Cutting fuel levies: government all talk, no action – Outa</p>What is the fuel levy?<p>The fuel levy isa tax charged on every litre of fuel sold, with a portion going to the government and another to the Road Accident Fund (RAF levy) to compensate victims of motor vehicle accidents.</p><p> </p><p>The levy amounts to 18% of the retail price, while the RAF levy is about 10%.</p><p>This has remained unchanged since 2022 to mitigate the effects of higher inflation resulting from increased fuel prices.</p>Why the increase?<p>The increase is intended to aid in revenue collection. Picture: Instagram/@skuzabuzy</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Former Lesedi FM presenter DJ Skuzabell, real name Nkunyana Nkunyana, has spoken out for the first time about allegations that he assaulted his wife, Thakane Ramakau.</p><p>This comes months after his estranged wife requested the withdrawal of the case at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court in May 2024.</p><p>Speaking on QwaQwa’s Finest Podcast, in an episode released on Wednesday, DJ Skuzabell said the accusations have damaged his reputation and affected his career.</p><p>“What is painful now is that the situation affected my career. Today, I’m unemployed. That is why the case was withdrawn. Ramakau reportedly said she withdrew the case for the emotional well-being of their children.</p><p> </p><p>DJ Skuzabell, however, insists the case was dropped due to a lack of evidence.</p><p>“If you have beaten someone and they get you arrested, the first thing that needs to be there is proof; there should be bruises, but there was nothing like that. There’s seldom consensus; it’s “stronger” or “weaker” on the spectrum.</p><p>Occasionally, the young guns are “exceptional” – like this year. Champion trainer Justin Snaith even went as far as to say the class of 2025 was the “best ever”.</p><p>Old gits point out that 1972 saw mighty clashes between Elevation, In Full Flight and Sentinel, but young Snaith’s “ever” was probably within the confines of the 21st century.</p><p>It is indeed a brilliant crop for any era. From Snaith’s yard alone, Eight On Eighteen, Sail The Seas and Okavango are already making marks in the history books.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Callan puts Dave back on throne </p> </p> </p><p>Count in other stables’ stars like One Stripe, Fire Attack, Quid Pro Quo, Confederate, Fatal Flaw, Spumante Dolce and My Best Shot and you can’t not be impressed.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>So, then, why are fields for the three-year-old Classic races so tiny?</p>Seven horses for Daily News 2000<p>Only seven horses are due to line up for the Daily News 2000 at Greyville on Saturday. This is arguably the premier three-year-old contest in the country, with the prestige of Grade 1 status, a total purse of R2-million and valuable merit rating points on offer that could open doors to other important races.</p><p>A couple of months ago, the Grade 1 Splashout Cape Derby only got five takers, prompting officials to reopen entries and scrape together another two participants. Earlier, the storied WSB Cape Guineas had six runners, and before that the Gauteng Guineas and SA Classic in Joburg had 11 horses each – dismal for a generation of horses just coming to the peak of their abilities.</p><p>There have been some high-profile injuries reported, such as to Fire Attack and Sail The Seas, but one would then expect a clamour of wannabes for their places.</p><p> </p><p>South Africa’s merit rating system has been blamed for the problem. There might be some truth in the argument that the Daily News 2000 is positioned close to the Hollywoodbets Durban July on the calendar and owners and trainers of up-and-coming horses prioritise that glamour event and are reluctant to incur heavy MR penalties that might disadvantage them in their quest for immortality.</p><p>If that’s true, and owners and trainers are eschewing the chance to win big money and big trophies, our racing scene is in a strange moment.</p><p>Rich owners and top-level trainers are vitally important in keeping the game going, but perhaps we have reached the stage when stakes on offer have fallen so far behind the game that they’ve become of little</p><p>consideration to the ultra-wealthy among us.</p>Durban July<p>The Durban July itself is also blamed by some. The fact that the country’s biggest race is a handicap – with qualifications – is also cited as a reason for connections shying away from Classic clashes with highly rated opposition.</p><p> </p><p>No-one is yet suggesting the July change its essential DNA. Nonetheless, there is an argument for the July’s conditions to be tweaked to make it a wee bit tougher for three-year-olds. Eight of the last 20 renewals have gone to three-year-olds and a high proportion of the remainder to lightly raced four-year-olds with low weights.</p><p>Everyone is trying to get their nag selected for the final line-up with the lowest possible MR – and therefore a feather weight. That’s clearly a major factor in the outcome and you’d imagine powers-that-be would want to even up the contest a bit and bring some of the country’s top older horses back into the July reckoning.</p><p>There might only be seven horses lining up at Greyville’s 2000m mark on Saturday, but they will not be short on ability. You get invited on a “trip” only to be used as an unpaid PR intern.</p><p>Case in point: the Travel Indaba expo in Durban last week, hosted by SA National Parks, a government entity.</p><p>On paper, this sounded like an informative jaunt into the travel industry’s current state.</p><p>What did we get? A press release with legs and a suspicious agenda. The experience kicked off with what should’ve been casual introductions and insightful chats with experts.</p><p>Some were warm, while others looked at us like we’d wandered there without permission.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Bustling New York </p> </p> </p><p>“Please wait for a formal introduction from SANParks comms,” they barked. Protocol, darling. Then came the kicker. We were flown down “to interview the CEO”, but just before the presser, we were informed: “No interviews. Just bring your smartphones. Tips for travel agencies to stay ahead</p><p>In case you forgot what press freedom looked like, it certainly wasn’t there.</p><p>There’s a curious irony in how government bodies treat the media: they invite us, then act like we crashed the party.</p><p>We had to hunt for the SANParks stand ourselves—there was no signage, no greeting, just cold shoulders. The staff seemed less interested in hosting and more in herding, and disdain dripped from every interaction.</p><p> </p><p>The press conference, which started late, only drove the point home. The panel? A testosterone-heavy line-up in a country that loves to parade the word “transformation” like a shiny medal. Where were the women? The fresh voices? Instead of engagement, we got indifference. Instead of collaboration, condescension.</p><p>It’s a shame, because if government entities truly want their message heard, they must start by treating the messengers like professionals, not intruders.</p><p>Oh, and for the record: the Nigerian PR firm that hosted us in Dubai for the Dubai expo? But the phrase “The city that never sleeps” in countless songs, films and television shows is simply true.</p><p>Nothing prepared me for the raw, relentless energy that is New York City.</p><p>It is more than a city; it is a living, breathing organism, pulsing through the night with an unmatched rhythm.</p><p>A heartbeat that you cannot just hear, you feel it. It’s in the steam rising from the manholes, the distant sirens, the rumble of the underground trains beneath your feet and the chatter in different languages.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Poor PR at Travel Indaba </p> </p> </p><p>It didn’t take long for the cinematic moments to come alive, finally seeing all that I have watched on sitcoms and movie series. I felt like an extra in an imaginary re-shoot of The Devil Wears Prada, strolling briskly down Fifth Avenue, dodging yellow cabs that hooted even before the traffic lights changed. Everyone seemed to have to be somewhere else – urgently.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>As you take it all in – the towering skyscrapers that curved into the clouds, the pedestrians with coffee (Starbucks) cups in one hand and cellphones in the other, and AirPods everywhere, fast walking… It was intense, yet strangely addictive. My new friends and I went to Times Square. I couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate than being surrounded by the electric chaos of one of the world’s most iconic locations. I wanted to see the city under the stars – or rather, under the blinding, cinematic glow of 3D Out-Of-Home digital screens flashing larger-than-life campaigns.</p><p>Even at midnight, Times Square buzzed with life. It felt surreal, like a giant birthday candle just for me. I soaked it all in – street performers, tourists and a sensory overload that made me feel like I’d walked into a dream.</p><p> </p><p>Then, when hunger pangs arrived, I turned to something I’d only seen in American sitcoms: the New York slice. They say everything is bigger in America – and they weren’t lying.</p><p>The pizza slice I was served could’ve easily passed for an entire pie back home. It was thin, greasy and divine. Standing on a random street corner with a slice of pepperoni pizza that folded perfectly in my hand, I suddenly understood why New Yorkers are so devoted to their food.</p><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Travel_16-May2025_7.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer">Picture: Kabelo Chabalala<p>I made it a point to explore the city on foot and via the subway, to absorb the atmosphere. There’s an unspoken culture on subway trains. People plugged into their music, flipping through books, or quietly observing the bustle around them. You quickly learn the rules: don’t stare, don’t speak unless spoken to, and always let people off before you get on.</p><p>As I wandered through the boroughs, I began to appreciate the city’s layered identity. The aromas shifted from street to street – Korean BBQ in Koreatown, fresh bagels in Jewish delis, halal food carts offering chicken over rice, and the unmistakable scent of roasted peanuts from a street vendor.</p><p> </p><p>One of the most awe-inspiring moments was crossing the Brooklyn Bridge. I did it on foot, taking my time to absorb the view of Manhattan’s skyline from a distance. The bridge itself, with its Gothic arches and steel cables, is more than a feat of engineering – it’s a work of art.</p><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Travel_16-May2025_.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer">Picture: Kabelo Chabalala<p>Pausing halfway and looking over the East River, I reflected on how many people before me had walked that same path chasing dreams, recovering from heartache, making memories.</p><p>Another highlight was the yellow taxi ride. There’s something undeniably cinematic about hailing a cab in New York. My driver asked where I was from. When I said South Africa, his eyes lit up and we had a lovely conversation about Joburg, Trevor Noah and amapiano.</p><p>It struck me how wonderfully connected the world can be, even in the backseat of a cab in the middle of New York.</p><p> </p><p>A deeply meaningful experience during my trip was visiting the United Nations headquarters, where I spent most of my time. Standing there, where world leaders gather to shape global discourse, gave me goose bumps.</p><p>It’s one thing to know the UN exists – it’s another to walk through its corridors and see the flags of every nation waving proudly, including my own. I was not just a visitor; I was a young African man standing on international ground, carrying the hopes and dreams of home.</p><p>Before I said my goodbyes to the city, I indulged in a bit of retail therapy. Shopping in New York is an experience all on its own. From luxury department stores to quirky pop-up shops, every street corner offers temptation.</p><p>While exploring Midtown, I found myself standing before the New York Times Building. For a writer, this was no ordinary building – it was a cathedral of storytelling. There was something sacred about being so close to the very structure where countless headlines had been born, where narratives that shape the world are crafted every day.</p><p> </p><p>And then – the burger. No fast-food chain or glossy menu could have prepared me for this particular experience.</p><p>I had it in a tiny, tucked-away diner. But the moment I took my first bite, I understood why American burgers are in a league of their own.</p><p>The patty was juicy, perfectly seasoned and grilled with care. It came loaded with cheddar, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, gherkins and a soft, lightly toasted bun.</p><p>The chips (or fries, as I was quickly corrected) were golden and addictive. Every bite was layered, flavourful and deeply satisfying.</p><p>I’ve eaten many burgers before, but this one will live in my memory for a very long time.</p><p>On my final day, I retreated to Central Park in search of stillness amid the chaos. I found a quiet moment to reflect. He immediately approached them and started questioning the women.</p><p>“The suspicion of the member was positive, after the infants were identified as the two stolen babies. It is a reflection of the difficult trade-offs needed to balance fiscal sustainability while addressing our developmental goals,” he said.</p><p>“There is clarity now: VAT will remain at 15%. This decision reflects our commitment to listen to South Africans and to all the political parties represented in this house. Economists react to Godongwana’s Budget 3.0 </p> </p> </p>The result of scrapping the VAT increase<p>Godongwana pointed out that the decision to do away with the VAT increase without a viable alternative source of revenue significantly reduced National Treasury’s ability to fund additional government programmes and projects.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>He said the budget directs 61 cents of every rand of consolidated, non-interest expenditure towards the social wage that will be spent to fund free basic services like electricity, water, education, healthcare and affordable housing, as well as social grants.</p><p>Budget 3.0 invests over R1 trillion in critical infrastructure to lift economic growth prospects and improve access to basic services without compromising the fiscal strategy of sustainable public finances.</p><p>Godongwana said Treasury achieved this difficult balance by reducing additional spending over the medium term by R68 billion, primarily reductions aimed at provisional allocations not yet assigned to votes. This means baseline allocations across all spheres of government remain largely unchanged.</p><p>Instead, Treasury reduced the size of the proposed increases to allocations in line with what the country can afford, he said. “Our focus going forward is threefold: balancing the budget through spending efficiencies, strengthening revenue collection and giving expression to the Medium-Term Development Plan.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: First fuel levy increase in three years – Here’s by how much</p>Budget 3.0 also cuts economic growth expectations<p>The minister also pointed out that much has changed since his previous budget attempt in March. “The most troubling changes are the global economic developments which have, in the short space of two months, already significantly affected the domestic economic outlook.</p><p>“The global economy is facing heightened trade tensions and elevated policy uncertainty with worrying economic consequences. The International Monetary Fund now projects global growth at 2.8% in 2025, 0.5 percentage points lower than the January estimate. Similarly, global trade is projected at 1.7% in 2025, which is also much lower than the January estimate.</p><p>“At the same time, inflation expectations are now above central bank targets in many advanced and emerging market economies and new trade barriers may raise inflation and prolong the cycle of higher interest rates.”</p><p> </p><p>Godongwana said as a small, open economy, South Africa is dependent on global trade and financial inflows which exposes South Africa particularly to these global economic developments. Therefore, Treasury now estimates real gross domestic product (GDP) to grow at 1.4% in 2025, lower than the 1.9% projected in March.</p><p>“Over the next two years, we project real GDP growth to increase moderately, to 1.6% in 2026 and 1.8% in 2027. Looking further ahead, the risks to the outlook remain elevated. These include the worsening global outlook, weaker-than-expected growth in the fourth quarter of 2024, the persistence of logistics constraints and higher borrowing costs.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: pressure and expectations are building</p>SA needs faster, inclusive economic growth – minister<p>Gogongwana emphasised that faster, inclusive growth that creates jobs is the only path towards a more prosperous South Africa.</p><p> </p><p>Treasury’s strategy for faster growth and to shield the country from the worst effects of an increasingly uncertain global environment, remains anchored on four pillars, he said. These pillars are maintaining macroeconomic stability, implementing structural reforms, improving state capability and accelerating infrastructure investment.</p><p>“Maintaining macroeconomic stability promotes low and stable inflation and lower interest rates while enhancing the country’s ability to withstand external shocks. In turn, this creates a conducive environment for investment, savings and job creation.”</p><p>“Prudent fiscal policy is a key component of maintaining macroeconomic stability that stabilises debt as a percentage of GDP, achieves a primary surplus, expands infrastructure investment and supports the social wage.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: Alcohol and cigarette prices will increase — here’s by how much</p><p> </p>The sad story of government debt<p>However, the minister did not have god news about government debt. He said in 2025/26, government debt is projected to stabilise at 77.4% of GDP. “While this is 1.2% higher than projected in the March budget, it is mainly due to lower nominal GDP.</p><p>“The main budget deficit decreases by R8 billion over the medium-term expenditure framework (MTEF) compared to our estimates in March. This narrower deficit is enabled by the steadily expanding primary surplus.</p><p>“By 2027/28, the primary surplus will grow from an estimated 0.8% of GDP in this financial year to 2.1%. A growing primary surplus means that our revenue will continue to be larger than our non-interest expenditure over the next three years.</p><p>“This contributes to lowering our gross borrowing requirements, resulting in lower debt and lower debt service costs over time. However, debt service costs remain high, amounting to more than R1.3 trillion over the next three years.”</p><p>Put differently, he said, this means in 2025/26 alone we are spending around R1.2 billion per day to service our debt which is more than what we spend on frontline services such as health, the police and basic education.</p><p>“This fiscal strategy is how we will drive down the debt to GDP ratio, slow the growth in debt service costs and rebuild our fiscal buffers. Picture: Gallo Images/Jeffrey Abrahams</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Opposition parties are divided over Budget 3.0, with some welcoming key changes and others condemning it as anti-poor and lacking solutions to South Africa’s economic crisis.</p><p>The DA cautiously welcomed the proposals for revenue and expenditure in the budget, viewing them as a pathway to a national budget that the party can support when it is time to vote.</p><p>“It is a victory for all South Africans that the mooted VAT hike has now finally been removed from the minister’s revenue proposals after the DA court action in this regard,” said Dr Mark Burke, DA spokesperson on finance.</p>VAT hike removal a win for the DA<p>The party stated that the budget speech is turning the tide towards growth and investment. DA said it is turning away from unchecked government spending funded by South African taxpayers.</p><p>“The DA also notes and welcomes that more realistic economic growth forecasts have been used to model revenue in this version of the budget,” Burke said.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Budget 3.0 marks a shift toward fiscal responsibility </p> </p> </p><p>The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party has criticised Budget 3.0 as an indictment of the poor, asserting that the increase in the fuel levy effectively acts as a hidden value-added tax (VAT) increase. From 4 June, the general fuel levy will increase by 16c per litre of petrol and by 15c per litre for diesel.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: not austerity budget, but a redistributive budget</p><p>“This budget is as absent as its president,” said MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela.</p><p>President Cyril Ramaphosa is in Washington, D.C., on a working visit to the United States. </p><p>Ndhlela said the budget continues to punish the poor.</p><p> </p><p>The party’s reaction comes as it announced it has tabled a motion of censure against Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana because of his “gross incompetence, chaotic budgetary process, and ongoing neglect” of the country’s socioeconomic crisis. The MK party is also moving to table a vote of no confidence in President Ramaphosa.</p>MK tables motions against Godongwana and Ramaphosa<p>“Minister Godongwana presented yet another hollow and anti-poor budget, burdening the most vulnerable through fuel levy increases and the removal of essential zero-rated VAT items, while offering no meaningful proposals to resolve the deep structural crises facing our society,” the party said in a statement.</p><p>The MK party was not impressed that the VAT was not increasing and urged the government to attract investment into the country, double infrastructure spending, and create jobs.</p><p>“This budget is perpetuating the state of the poor,” Ndhlela said.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Budget 3.0: First fuel levy increase in three years – Here’s by how much</p><p>The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have rejected the third version of the budget, describing it as “weak, misguided and disconnected” from the daily lives of South Africans.</p><p>“What is now tabled is not only weaker than the previous budget – it is a declaration of surrender by the National Treasury,” the party said in a statement.</p><p>“It demonstrates complete incompetence and an ideological commitment to failed neoliberal austerity, despite the claim by the Minister of Finance and the former liberation movement that this is not an austerity budget.”</p><p> </p>Budget lacks concrete plan to create jobs – Malema <p>EFF leader Julius Malema said Godongwana’s budget lacks a concrete plan to create jobs or stimulate economic growth.</p><p>“He must increase corporate tax. He must increase the inheritance tax. He must increase the luxurious land tax where people just have beautiful land and don’t use it for anything. We must strengthen the South African Revenue Service (Sars),” Malema said.</p><p>He also criticised the government for failing to raise corporate tax.</p><p>ALSO READ: Godongwana cuts government spending to offset VAT shortfall</p><p> </p><p>“To them, the rich are untouchable,” Malema said. </p><p>Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Velenkosini Hlabisa supported the budget, stating that South Africans must use the available resources rather than rely on tax increases.</p><p>“The good aspect is that the frontline services (education, health, social grants) were maintained. More funding is going to infrastructure to generate job opportunities and create an opportunity for the country to grow its economy,” Hlabisa said.</p>IFP not happy with fuel levy increase<p>The party was not happy with the fuel levy increase, as it would hit the poorest hard.
