Así lo anunció en diálogo con CLACSO.tv Hollman Morris, gerente del Sistema de Medios Públicos de Colombia.</p><p>El Concierto de la Esperanza contará con artistas colombianos e internacionales, consolidándose como el punto de encuentro musical y popular por la transformación social, la cultura de paz y la defensa de los derechos humanos. Rock en español, murga, folk metal, cumbia, tropical, rap, rasqa y joropo, son algunos de los géneros musicales que se escucharán en este concierto gratuito que estará disponible para toda Colombia a través del canal de televisión Señal Colombia, las emisoras Radio Nacional de Colombia y Radiónica, y también en la plataforma gratuita de streaming RTVCPlay.</p><p>Desde España, llega al Concierto de la Esperanza, Mago de Oz, una legendaria agrupación musical con letras cargadas de sensibilidad social y conocida por ser una de las más importantes e icónicas del folk metal con historias fantásticas y mitológicas.</p><p>El sur del continente estará presente con la histórica agrupación chilena Inti-Illimani, con su gran compromiso con la música folclórica y la protesta social; y con el rock en español de Prisioneros – Miguel Tapia con sus clásicas canciones directas y contestatarias, un legado extendido por toda Latinoamérica.</p><p>Bersuit Vergarabat llega desde la región austral de América, con su afamada propuesta argentina que mezcla rock, cumbia, tango, murga y otros ritmos latinos, para que la gente disfrute con sus canciones llenas de humor y sarcasmo.</p><p>Las islas caribeñas estarán presentes con Los Van Van de Cuba, una de las orquestas más importantes e influyentes en la región, con su música salsa, tropical y son.</p><p>El rap internacional tendrá representación con Apache, el rapero venezolano reconocido en el mundo por su gran influencia e inspiración para las nuevas generaciones. La cuota nacional de este género llega desde Tibú con Motilonas RAP, Denis Cáceres y Sol Ortega, expondrán su testimonio de resistencia, empoderamiento femenino y defensa del territorio del Catatumbo en sus letras. Antioquia estará presente con Alí A.K.A. Mind, el rapero de Bogotá, con letras que lo ha llevado a otros continentes, abordando problemáticas sociales y buscando paz con una lírica cruda y directa.</p><p>Otros artistas colombianos que harán parte del Concierto de la Esperanza son la agrupación santandereana Velandia y La Tigra, creadores del inconfundible estilo rasqa, un lenguaje musical original que combina letras sociales con humor rebelde conectadas con la realidad colombiana. 3156276	有图 <p><svg></svg><svg></svg><svg></svg><svg></svg></p><p>Transcripción de la columna de Karina Batthyány</p><p>en InfoCLACSO – 21 de junio de 2025</p><p>La 30° Marcha del Silencio en Uruguay</p><p>La razón por la que cada 20 de mayo se hace nuestra 30° Marcha del Silencio en Uruguay son las heridas del pasado. Todos y todas nos encontramos en la Avenida 18 de Julio, la calle principal de la ciudad de Montevideo, para ir a la Plaza Libertad con carteles de nuestras y nuestros desaparecidos durante la última dictadura cívico militar para reclamar Memoria, Verdad, Justicia y Nunca Más.</p><p>En esta ocasión, la Marcha número 30 tuvo como consigna el “30 veces Nunca Más” y “Sepan Cumplir. ¿Dónde Están?” en alusión a dos elementos. Uno es la parte nodal de nuestro Himno Nacional y otra el “Sabremos Cumplir” que el Frente Amplio, junto al presidente actual Yamandú Orsi, utilizaron durante su campaña electoral.</p><p>La Marcha del Silencio es una de las marchas más numerosas y conmovedoras en Uruguay, donde la principal avenida de nuestra Ciudad queda en absoluto silencio y cualquier ruido parece algo extraño entre los cientos de miles de personas que marchamos en reclamo de los y las desaparecidas y por la construcción de la memoria colectiva.</p><p>Cada año somos más los y las que participamos de la marcha y del trabajo de todo mayo como “Mes de la Memoria”, en intervenir de distintas maneras los espacios urbanos de Montevideo y de otras ciudades del país para hacer el reclamo de Memoria, Verdad, Justicia y Nunca Más.</p><p>A quienes alguna vez estén en Montevideo en la fecha del 20 de mayo y puedan participar se los recomiendo. Será una experiencia que no se les va a borrar nunca, porque es una marcha muy conmovedora desde el acercamiento de la columna principal a la Plaza Libertad hasta el nombramiento de todas las personas desaparecidas de ese periodo nefasto de nuestro país.</p><p>Quiero destacar, una vez más, que fue una marcha multitudinaria con la participación de muchos y muchas jóvenes, lo que garantiza la continuidad de nuestra lucha.</p><p>Afroamericanidad, ayer y hoy</p><p>Por otro lado, cada 21 de mayo, en Colombia se conmemora el “Día de la Afrocolombianidad” para celebrar la abolición de la esclavitud en el país en un día como hoy de 1851. Se trata de una jornada no solo para no olvidar lo que fue la esclavitud, sino también para destacar la fuerza moral de la comunidad afrocolombiana, además de reivindicar su identidad cultural y sus orígenes.</p><p>La historia de la presencia afro en Nuestramérica está marcada por la forma más brutal de explotación humana que es la esclavitud. Durante más de cuatro siglos, las personas de ascendencia africana fueron sometidas a semejantes condiciones crueles y degradantes, pero también resistieron y lucharon por su libertad.</p><p>Según los relatos históricos, esto se dio cuando los colonizadores españoles vieron disminuida drásticamente la fuerza de trabajo de la población indígena esclavizada, debido a malos tratos, condiciones deplorables de trabajo forzado y las enfermedades importadas desde Europa. Basta recordar que entre 1.500 y 1.750, la población originaria de la América Española se redujo de 41 millones a 13 millones.</p><p>A partir de allí, los opresores de la época impulsaron una ley que permitía la compra y el ingreso de esclavos africanos para reemplazar la función indígenas en las labores más duras en agricultura y minería. Así las cosas, desde principios del siglo XVI hasta mediados del XIX, 15 millones de hombres, mujeres y niños fueron víctimas del comercio transatlántico de esclavos.</p><p>Los primeros esclavos y esclavas africanas llegaron en 1.501 a la isla La Española, hoy territorio compartido entre República Dominicana y Haití. Encadenados y muy mal alimentados, eran amontonados en las bodegas de los barcos. Se calcula que un 30% moría en alta mar o se enfermaba como consecuencia de las infecciones y eran lisa y llanamente tirados por la borda.</p><p>Al llegar a América, un protomédico los inspeccionaba antes de bajar a tierra. Tras ese trámite, el asentista -quien gozaba del privilegio de importar negros esclavos- pagaba a la Aduana los derechos y procedía a acreditarlos grabando con un hierro candente o carimbo las iniciales del propietario en la espalda o en los hombros de los esclavos y las esclavas, una metodología legitimada por la ley. Luego, se los encerraba en barracones oscuros e insalubres, atados con cadenas hasta proceder a la subasta y concretar la venta. Una vez adjudicados, el nuevo amo solía volver a marcarlos con un hierro al rojo vivo para establecer su propiedad de manera fehaciente.</p><p>La vida de un esclavo y de una esclava en América difería de una colonia a otra, pero tenía un aspecto en común: no tenían derechos como ser humano y eran propiedad del amo al igual que una carreta o una mula, de la que se deshacía cuando ya no le era de utilidad. El trato que recibían en las plantaciones y barracas donde dormían era por lo común despiadado y se les castigaba severamente por cualquier hecho considerado como desobediencia por el amo. A pesar de ello, se rebelaban y escapaban, creando palenques o campamentos de cimarrones, hasta donde los propietarios los perseguían y les aplicaban castigos ejemplificadores en caso de captura.</p><p>Hasta el día de hoy, las clases dominantes de muchos de los países de la región siguen escondiendo los orígenes y fundamentos de la esclavitud, que con su mano de obra forzada contribuyó a la acumulación capitalista y al desarrollo industrial de los países europeos. Negación que se emparenta con el racismo que sufren hasta nuestros días la población de origen africano y sus descendientes, desvalorizando sus culturas, el rol que han cumplido –y siguen cumpliendo– en nuestras sociedades y ocultando los malos tratos y la explotación a los que se los sometió durante siglos, primero como mano de obra esclava, luego como “carne de cañón” en las gestas independentistas o, por ejemplo, en la guerra llamada de la Triple Alianza de 1865 a 1871 de Brasil, Argentina y Uruguay contra Paraguay, a lo que se sumaron las epidemias de cólera y de fiebre amarilla que provocaron gran mortandad entre los más pobres, incluidos los afroamericanos del sur del continente.</p><p>El Día Nacional de la Afrocolombianidad es una oportunidad para volver a mirar para atrás pensando en transmitir a las nuevas generaciones los grandes episodios que han forjado nuestras identidades y rescatar la diversidad cultural que nos habita, rescatando las luchas por su libertad y dignidad de las poblaciones africanas traídas a América por la fuerza, simbolizadas en la noche del 22 al 23 de agosto de 1791, cuando un grupo de hombres y mujeres, arrancados de África y vendidos como esclavos, se rebelaron contra el sistema en el actual territorio de Haití para obtener la libertad y la independencia, un levantamiento que finalmente condujo a la independencia y a la abolición de la trata de esclavos en el país en 1804, seguido de Cuba, México y gran parte de América Latina, siendo Brasil el último en abolir la esclavitud en 1888.</p><p>Saludamos desde esta columna la conmemoración de la Afrocolombianidad en el día de hoy, precisamente el país que cobijará en menos de tres semanas la X Conferencia Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Ciencias Sociales, del 9 al 12 de junio en Bogotá, donde el racismo contemporáneo será un tema de debate y análisis en diálogos magistrales, paneles y mesas para seguir construyendo alternativas para superar definitivamente ese racismo aún presente en nuestras sociedades.</p><p>– Más allá de la abolición de la esclavitud, hay una continuación en la lógica de discriminación y de racismo estructural, también lógicas de segregación laboral y cómo los marcos de extractivismo están muy relacionados a la violencia racista. Qué difícil es mirar esta situación sin pensarlo en un presente, no por la esclavitud en sí sino por las consecuencias hasta el día de hoy, ¿no?</p><p>– Por supuesto. Picture: Mantengu Mining website</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) says after a months-long investigation it found no evidence of “naked shorting” of Mantengu Mining shares, as claimed by the company in a criminal complaint.</p><p>It also found no evidence of improper conduct by the JSE or its officials. Should the matter be further investigated by law enforcement, the FSCA says it will provide its full support and cooperation.</p><p>Naked shorts are illegal in most countries and are seen as a type of price manipulation. This is where shares are sold by a trader who does not own or has not borrowed them, with a view to making a profit by buying the shares back at a lower price.</p><p>This is what Mantengu alleges has been happening to its shares.</p><p>Mantengu alleged that there is a “centrally controlled, tightly run and fronted syndicate that is central to Mantengu’s share price manipulation,” the objective being to disrupt its acquisition of Blue Ridge Platinum in October last year.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> New critical minerals strategy will add policy certainty – Mantashe </p> </p> </p><p>Mantengu named a number of alleged co-conspirators in its claims, including certain JSE officials, Liberty Coal and its chief financial officer, Ulrich Bester, who was formerly financial director at Mantengu.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The JSE, Bester and Liberty Coal have denied any wrongdoing, and have threatened legal suits against Mantengu for what they say are false and defamatory allegations.</p><p>Liberty Coal accused Mantengu CEO Mike Miller of being a “delusional fantasist” who has made defamatory allegations without providing evidence.</p><p>Liberty Coal and the JSE say they have yet to see actual evidence of the criminal complaint allegedly made against them.</p><p>ALSO READ: JSE springs a record for the September quarter</p><p> </p>Mantengu responds<p>Mantengu responded to the FSCA statement late on Sunday, highlighting what it regards as several deficiencies in its investigation, including:</p>The FSCA investigation covered just nine months out of Mantengu’s 24-month review period;The investigation was confined to a sample of trades flagged by Mantengu, suggesting the JSE did not identify or refer any suspicious trades to the FSCA, which “raises concern about the JSE’s monitoring and surveillance of the trading activity in Mantengu’s shares”;The investigation was too narrowly focused on short selling instead of alleged collusive and systemic share price manipulation by a syndicate;Information from electronic devices seized as a result of an Anton Piller court order on Ulrich Bester was excluded from the investigation;While the FSCA has cleared certain JSE executives of wrongdoing, they remain the subject of a Hawks investigation; andEight million Mantengu shares were allegedly taken with authorisation by the share owner to cover naked shorts – the company alleges its shareholders are losing significant value due to governance breaches by the JSE.<p>ALSO READ: From resources to retail: Unpacking the JSE’s 2023 market movers</p>Investigation, findings, conclusion<p>The FSCA’s statement on Friday took issue with Mantengu’s claims in the media “that it had reported to the JSE Limited and the FSCA that a certain group of individuals were involved in the manipulation of the company’s share price”.</p><p>Mantengu further claimed that the FSCA had found a prima facie case warranting further investigation.</p><p> </p><p>“The FSCA wishes to clarify that claims that it found a prima facie case for further investigation are incorrect,” it says.</p><p>“The Authority received a complaint from Mantengu alleging prohibited trading practices and insider trading. Given the serious nature of the allegations and because they [in their untested form] met the threshold of reasonable suspicion, the FSCA considered it prudent to initiate an investigation.”</p><p>The FSCA initially focused on specific share trades made in January 2024, which Mantengu alleged were intended to drive its share price lower. The regulator then conducted further investigations into what were deemed suspicious trades made in August 2024.</p><p>Mantengu’s share price over the past year</p><p> </p><img src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=" rel="noopener noreferrer"><noscript><img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mantengu-share-price.png" rel="noopener noreferrer"></noscript><p>“After a thorough investigation, the FSCA concluded that the transactions and orders identified by Mantengu were lawful securities transactions in the ordinary course of business,” concludes the regulator.</p><p>“With regard to the allegations of naked short selling of 387 044 Mantengu shares during the first week of June 2024, the Authority concluded that the transactions did not amount to uncovered short sales.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Mines in trouble for failing local communities</p><p> </p>Earlier review<p>The JSE told Moneyweb that it previously reviewed Mantengu’s claims of share price manipulation, finding “either no evidence of possible price manipulation warranting a referral to the FSCA by the JSE” – which it says it conveyed to Mantengu – “or the relevant trading activity is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the FSCA”.</p><p>Mantengu says one of its shareholders was approached by the JSE to borrow shares, presumably for to facilitate short trading.</p><p>The JSE says that when it conducts securities lending and borrowing with market participants, this does not necessarily mean the shares are being used for short selling.</p><p>“Mantengu awaits the full FSCA report and will consult its corporate and legal advisors to assess whether a High Court review of the findings is warranted, given the investigation’s limited scope,” says Miller.</p><p>“The outcome does not impact Mantengu’s criminal complaint and ongoing investigation.</p><p>“Contrary to some narratives, Mantengu is not seeking to discredit the JSE or FSCA,” he adds.</p><p>“As a responsible corporate citizen, we are committed to ensuring market integrity – whether concerning people, systems, controls or regulatory frameworks.</p><p>“Several other listed companies have approached us with similar concerns, reinforcing the need for thorough scrutiny.”</p><p>This article was republished from Moneyweb. And that’s a question for Jack, his agent, and the club.</p><p>“If he stays it will be fine and he fought like he fought from day one to make a contribution, but not today.”</p><p>Grealish, 29, signed from Aston Villa in 2021 for £100 million ($135 million) and played a key role in City securing the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup to complete a historic treble two years later.</p><p>However, he started just seven times in the league this season and was an unused substitute in City’s FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace.</p><p> </p>– ‘It’s not personal’ –<p>Put to Guardiola that he is unhappy with Grealish, the Spaniard snapped back: “Who said I’m not happy with Jack? Rico (Lewis) was not selected, (James) McAtee was exceptional against Aston Villa and Wolves. Why not ask me about McAtee?</p><p>“It’s not personal. I have 24 players, I have to get rid of six players for the last game and five today because (Mateo) Kovacic got sent off.</p><p>“I’m the person who fought for Jack to come here, and the person who fought for him to stay here this season and the next season.</p><p>“I’m the one who said: ‘I want Jack Grealish’. Picture: Supplied</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The South African Property Owners Association (Sapoa) will challenge a controversial by-law adopted by the City of Joburg (CoJ) in February to regulate privately-owned CCTV camera systems facing public spaces.</p><p>A court application has been issued and is being formally served on the city, which means the city can no longer attempt to enforce the by-law pending the outcome of the litigation, Sapoa said in a statement on Friday.</p><p>The contentious Privately-Owned Closed Circuit Television Surveillance Camera by-law has met with resistance from a wide spectrum of stakeholders who question:</p>The process followed to adopt it;The city’s mandate to regulate the matter;The impact it will have on the fight against crime; andThe impact it will have on the economic viability of the private security sector.<p>The by-law has been operational since its adoption in council on 28 February, despite opposition from the DA and ACDP.</p><p>It provides for the obligatory registration of all CCTV camera systems operational within Johannesburg that have an angle of view to public places, the annual renewal of approval, regular inspections of all CCTV cameras by city officials, the payment of fees in respect of applications and renewals, as well as the fact that footage may only be released to a South African Police Service (SAPS) or Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer.</p><p>“Footage obtained from CCTV cameras may no longer be shared by the property owner or security provider,” Sapoa says.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Joburg’s CCTV bylaw fails residents and security firms</p>Hobbling the fight against crime<p>Vumacam, the largest CCTV operator in the province, previously said the introduction of the by-law will set back the progress made with the use of technology to fight crime.</p><p>Vumacam has a large network of cameras linked to a control room from where it can activate private or public security forces to incidents.</p><p>According to ITWeb itreceived a total of 118 764 events via its integrated intelligence operations centre in March alone.</p><p> </p><p>“Of the total number of events, 8 197 situations were escalated to the control room, leading to the arrest of suspects in connection with multiple armed robberies across Johannesburg.”</p><p>Vumacam said in a statement in April it “believes that the legislation in its current form places significant, unlawful restrictions on privately owned CCTV cameras, which are onerous and overly restrictive to commercial, private, and residential camera owners”.</p><p>It said the by-law creates “significant uncertainty for operators like Vumacam”.</p><p>“The challenges introduced to operating its services will make them economically unviable in the current economic climate. By prohibiting the existing use of CCTV by businesses, the by-laws will have a detrimental effect on many industries across the city and may limit the technology’s efficacy and further growth.</p><p> </p><p>“The new by-laws also appear to limit how the private security industry can use CCTV to protect the communities they serve,” it adds.</p><p>“Vumacam believes this is a step backwards in the critical fight to protect all citizens and grow the economy, as many private security operators have used surveillance technologies to great effect in the last few years,” Vumacam said.</p><p>The DA called the by-law “nothing more than a hidden tax on safety and security, disguised as regulation”.</p><p>Sapoa says despite the by-law being in operation for more than two months, no registration forms are available, and the tariffs have not been published.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Concerns over private CCTV cameras in Joburg</p>Legal advice<p>The commercial property industry body questions the promulgation process and is convinced, after obtaining legal advice, that the city is exceeding its powers by trying to regulate a matter relating to safety and security, privacy, and other constitutional rights, which do not fall within the constitutional mandate of local government.</p><p>Sapoa CEO Neil Gopal says the Constitutional Court has noted that municipalities are primarily tasked with service delivery and this by-law has nothing to do with that.</p><p>“Imagine a crime-ridden City that can’t even provide basic service delivery, or fix a leak, wants to add another admin-intensive application and registration process to their arsenal of already failing initiatives,” DA caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku said.</p><p> </p><p>Gopal said commercial property owners would be remiss in their legal duty if they did not safeguard their properties by making use of CCTV cameras.</p><p>ALSO READ: Gauteng e-Government expands CCTV network in townships</p>‘Legislative overreach’<p>“To now decree that such systems must not only be registered and approved, especially given the administrative backlogs experienced in the City, but also that footage may only be shared with authorised officials, constitutes legislative overreach by the City,” he said.</p><p>In doing so: “The by-law violates property owners’ right to access of information, as enshrined in the Constitution.”</p><p>Gopal said Sapoa has decided to proceed with challenging the by-law in court to have it declared unconstitutional and invalid and to have it set aside.</p><p>Sapoa asked its members to notify the organisation if they are aware of any attempts to enforce the by-law pending the litigation.</p><p>ALSO READ: Sapoa calls for action on illegal developments in Tshwane</p>Cape Town rates matter<p>Meanwhile, Sapoa has welcomed City of Cape Town’s decision to amend its latest budget. Gopal expressed hope that in its anticipated amended budget proposals, the city accedes to Sapoa’s earlier requests.</p><p>The organisation objected to:</p>The proposed 7.96% increase in property rates, proposing that the increase be capped at 5%;The introduction of a city-wide cleaning levy, which it considers to be an unlawful and unconstitutional additional tax;The calculation of fixed water charges on the basis of property valuation, and the introduction of a basic sewerage charge (it proposed a return to calculations based on connection size);The proposed electricity charges, which it says boil down to a 16% increase for large commercial users; andThe lack of a tariff calculator for commercial clients, without which it is impossible for the business sector to assess the impact of the new budget on their finances.<p>Sapoa met with Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis last week, with Gopal thanking the mayor and his team for the opportunity to constructively engage with the city.</p><p>“Our meetings were robust but respectful, and we assured the City of the continued support of Sapoa,” he said.</p><p>“It is however important to note that the commercial property sector is an important constituency which should not be ignored, as continuous unreasonable and unsustainable increases in rates and other charges will naturally lead to businesses disinvesting in the city.”</p><p>This article was republished from Moneyweb. Picture: Steve Haag Sports/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Sharks have still not been hitting their stride despite the return from injury of several Springboks, and their four-game winning streak that secured them a third-place finish in the United Rugby Championship’s league phase.</p><p>In the build-up to their last match, which the Sharks won 12–3 against Scarlets, flanker James Venter rightly pointed out that the Durban side have not yet had a complete performance this season.</p><p>“We want to play 80 minutes of rugby to the standard we can. I think that’s what we are looking for,” he said. “We are one game away from clicking and being a really, really dangerous side.”</p><p>He hoped the Scarlets contest would be the one that would bring it all together. Instead, the Sharks ground out a tryless win against a threatening but likewise lacklustre Welsh side, who, like the hosts, regularly lost the ball when they had momentum in the opposition’s half. </p><p>Sharks head coach John Plumtree and captain Eben Etzebeth said they simply have to improve if they wish to beat Munster in their quarter-final in Durban this weekend. While Plumtree praised the Sharks’ defence and lineout, he and Etzebeth identified areas that could be worked on.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Is a coaching shake-up on the cards at the Lions? </p> </p> </p>Sub-standard scrum<p>“The scrum was a bit messy from both teams, there were a few free kicks and penalties, but I’m really happy with the fact that we defended well,” Plumtree said.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The all-Springbok front row of Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi and Vincent Koch were replaced in the 55th minute by Fez Mbatha, Ntuthuko Mchunu and Hanro Jacobs, as has been the model since Trevor Nyakane’s long-term injury, with Ruan Dreyer also playing from the bench. </p><p>But the quality of the front row is backed by stars in the second and third rows. On paper, the pack is one of the best in the world. They have shone in some games, but not as regularly as they would like.</p>Inaccuracies and penalty offences<p>Finishing a game error-free is impossible, but lost balls and penalties can build up and be the difference in a contest. That was exactly what happened against Scarlets – the Sharks winning through four penalty kicks.</p><p>Plumtree said role clarity was missing, and the Sharks were guilty of loose passes and poor tackles. “There were a few issues around our attack tonight. We mucked up our launches, just through inaccuracies.</p><p> </p><p>“We just couldn’t get anything right. It wasn’t a good performance from us, and we have to really look at the reasons why and get better.”</p><p>The Scarlets only scored through a drop-goal, using all of their penalties to go for lineouts and attempt to get bigger scores. But the Sharks will not always have the scoreboard pressure to keep their opposition doing that.</p>Sharks still require the finishing touch<p>Tying in with inaccuracies, loose balls and lack of role clarity, tries are only scored when no mistakes occur in the build-up.</p><p>The Sharks should be commended for taking their chances with the boot, slotting all four penalties. Photo: AFP</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>A faction of the Zulu royal family backing King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s ascension to the throne says it is not fazed by the upcoming court challenge to the state’s recognition of the monarch.</p><p>President Cyril Ramaphosa’s lawyers have approached the Supreme Court of Appeals in Bloemfontein in an attempt to overturn a ruling made by the Pretoria High Court.</p><p>In 2023, the court set aside the president’s decision to recognise King Misuzulu as a legally recognised king of the Zulu nation.</p><p>The court further ordered the president to institute a committee to investigate allegations of violation of customary laws in the identification of King Misuzulu.</p><p>In a statement on Sunday, King Misuzulu’s faction said the court hearing would have no impact on the throne, as he was installed in line with proper Zulu customs.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Ramaphosa played the long game with Trump </p> </p> </p><p>“There is no cause for alarm or speculation. The throne is not under threat. The king remains the rightful custodian of the Zulu nation, duly installed by both tradition and law.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“Even if the president were not to succeed in the matter before the court on the 29th in Bloemfontein, it would not advance anyone else’s claim to the throne. As a matter of fact, no one has directly challenged the incumbent after the decision had been taken in Pietermaritzburg,” said family spokesperson, Thulani Zulu.</p>Certificate of recognition controversy <p>On 29 October 2022, Ramaphosa officially presented King Misuzulu with a certificate of recognitionat Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.</p><p>This was King Misuzulu’s first official recognition as the king of the Zulu people in accordance with section 8(1) of the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act of 2019.</p><p>“It’s important to understand that the certificate handover does not affect the Ukungena Esibayeni ceremony, which is the traditional and only recognised method of installing a king in Zulu culture.</p><p> </p><p>“The certificate represented recognition by the state — an administrative formality acknowledging that the Zulu nation had already installed its king.</p><p>“By accepting the certificate, we respected the democratic order that recognises, upholds and respects traditional leadership,” said Zulu.</p>Another court battle for the Zulu king<p>He said Misuzulu had successfully won most court battles concerning the throne.</p><p>“All court cases surrounding King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and the Zulu throne have been finalised, with His Majesty prevailing in every matter.</p><p> </p><p>“The upcoming case is not about the throne, nor is it a challenge to His Majesty’s authority. It concerns whether the President followed proper consultative procedures before issuing the certificate of recognition,” he said.</p><p>The court case is set to take place over two days, from Tuesday, 28 May, to Wednesday, 29 May.</p><p>ALSO READ: Five people killed in horror accident, north of Durban in KZN</p>What does Prince Simakade’s faction want?<p>Meanwhile, the faction supporting Prince Simakade kaZwelithini remains hopeful that the state will dethrone King Misuzulu and allow for a fresh customary process to determine what they consider to be the rightful heir to the throne.</p><p> </p><p>They maintain that Prince Simakade, as the eldest son of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini, is the rightful heir to the throne.</p><p>However, their interpretation of Zulu customs has been challenged by the faction supporting King Misuzulu’s claim to the throne.</p><p>This faction believes that King Misuzulu is the son of a great queen, and it was inevitable that he would ultimately lead the Zulu nation.</p><p>NOW READ: Will Trump go after Malema and Zuma? Picture: Anton Geyser/Gallo Images</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>One Stormers man and two Bulls players are in the running to be named 2024/25 South African United Rugby Championship Player of the Season.</p><p>Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu of the Stormers and the Bulls duo of Cameron Hanekom and Wilco Louw have been rewarded for their consistent good form throughout the season by grabbing the three nominations for the award.</p><p>Voting closed on Friday with the coaching teams of the Springboks and the four South African franchises (Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers), as well as members of the media, casting their votes for players from the four SA URC teams.</p><p>A total of 17 players from all four SA franchises received votes, with Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Hanekom and Louw – all three of whom attended the Boks’ alignment camp in Cape Town last week – garnering the most support.</p>Consistent performances<p>Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who play No 10, has been central to the Stormers’ attacking threat this season, and he’s joint-fifth on the list for most points scored at the conclusion of the league phase of the competition.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Is a coaching shake-up on the cards at the Lions? </p> </p> </p><p>Hanekom, who plays eighthman, has been in great form with ball in hand and on defence for the Bulls. It’s a courageous decision from our club, and I don’t see any fault in it.”</p>Pirates will ‘improve’ next season<p>Meanwhile, Ncikazi said that despite Pirates’ failure to topple Mamelodi Sundowns this season, the Buccaneers could still be proud of what they achieved.</p><p>The Buccaneers not only closed the gap between them and Sundowns, but they also broke their record for the number of wins in a single league season. </p><p> </p><p>“The growth that has been mentioned, the narrowing of the gap, the broken records [most wins, 19, so far in a single league season]. 3156259	有图 <p> Unlike private sector executives, the Sassa CEO has not received any performance bonuses during the 2023–24 or 2024–25 financial years. </p> <p> <img src="https://media.citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sassa-ceo.webp" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <p>Picture: Sassa</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>The Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Tolashe, has revealed detailed information about the remuneration package of the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), which operates under her department.</p><p>The Sassa CEO earns an annual package of R2.65 million, exceeding the prescribed salary band for director-general-level positions by over R100 000.</p><p>Tolashe recently revealed the compensation details in response to a parliamentary question from DA MP Thamsanqa Bhekokwakhe Mabhena, who requested information about executive remuneration across entities reporting to her department.</p>Social development executive compensation structure<p>The Sassa CEO, appointed in 2019, earns a monthly basic salary of R154 583.33.</p><p>Tolashe explained that the executive receives “additional compensation payable to heads of department, which is 10% non-pensionable allowance in line with Clause 9.1 of Chapter One(1) of the SMS Handbook (amended in April 2003)”.</p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Sassa grant increases and SRD extension in ‘Budget 3.0’: What you need to know </p> </p> </p><p>The package significantly surpasses the standard salary band of R2 259 984 to R2 545 854 applicable to salary level 16 positions at the director-general level.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Tolashe noted that “the salary package offered by the Department of Social Development (DSD) to the CEO which she accepted in 2019; was compared and matched with the salary package she (the CEO) stated; she was receiving from her previous employer; this being in line with Regulation 44 (3) (d) of the Public Service Regulations,2016; as amended”.</p><p>ALSO READ: Here’s what some of South Africa’s SOE bosses earn</p>Sassa CEO hot seat <p>Busisiwe Mamela joined Sassa from Postbank as CEO in 2019. She was suspended last year, reportedly on full pay, amid an investigation into her appointment.</p><p>According to Tolashe, Memela’s precautionary suspension was due to issues raised by the Public Protector.</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: ‘Myriad of serious issues’ – Why Sassa CEO Memela-Khambula has been suspended</p><p>Themba Matlou was later appointed as the acting CEO. A job listing for the position of CEO was advertised this year, with suspicion that Memela may have been dismissed.</p><p>Speaking to The Citizen, the department said the position was advertised in preparation for the end of Memela’s term. </p><p>The department also refused to comment on the outcome of the investigation.</p><p> </p>Performance bonuses discontinued<p>Unlike private-sector executives, the Sassa CEO did not receive performance bonuses during the 2023-24 or 2024-25 financial years.</p><p>Tolashe confirmed that “no performance bonus (once-off) was paid to the CEO because the payment of performance bonus to public servants was discontinued in 2021/22 FY, per DPSA circular number 01 of 2019, which circular is applicable to Sassa”.</p><p>However, the CEO does receive an annual service bonus equivalent to a thirteenth cheque worth R154 583.33, paid each November.</p><p>This benefit applies universally across the public service as “a transversal service benefit applicable to all employees in the organisation, and the public service.”</p><p> </p><p>ALSO READ: Social development didn’t fill all its vacancies — Here’s why</p>Regulatory framework<p>The minister emphasised that executive remuneration at Sassa operates under specific legislative requirements.</p><p>“Section 7(2) (b) of the Sassa Act (Act No. 9 of 2004) states that ‘The Minister for the Public Service & Administration (DPSA) in consultation with the Minister of Social Development and the Minister of Finance; must determine the remuneration and conditions of service of the Chief Executive Officer and the other members of the staff of the Agency’,” Tolashe stated.</p>Comparative compensation<p>The National Development Agency (NDA), another entity under the department’s oversight, pays its acting CEO R2 646 522.52 annually through a total cost-to-company package.</p><p> </p><p>This structure allows employees to customise their benefits allocation based on individual needs.</p><p>Like Sassa, the NDA has not paid performance bonuses since the 2019 DPSA circular, which discontinued such payments across the public service.</p>Sassa social grant increases for 2025<p>Child support grants will increase from R530 to R560, and grant-in-aid will receive an identical increase.</p><p>Beyond executive compensation, the department oversees significant social spending through various grant programs.</p><p>The National Treasury’s 2025 Budget Overview confirmed increases across multiple social grants, though the Social Relief of Distress grant remains unchanged.</p><p>The old age grant will increase from R2 185 to R2 315, while the war veterans grant will increase from R2 205 to R2 335.</p><p>Disability grants will climb from R2 185 to R2 315, and foster care grants will increase from R1 180 to R1 250.</p><p>The care dependency grant matches the Disability grant increase, moving from R2 185 to R2 315.</p><p>ALSO READ: Sassa grant increases and SRD extension in ‘Budget 3.0’: What you need to know</p>SRD grant extension<p>Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced during his Budget Speech that “the temporary Covid 19 SRD grant will be extended until 31 March 2026, with R35.2 billion allocated to maintain the current R370 per month per beneficiary, including administration costs”.</p><p>Godongwana indicated government is “actively exploring various options to better integrate” the SRD grant with employment opportunities.</p><p>“This includes considering a job-seeker allowance and other measures, as part of the review of Active Labour Market Programmes. </p><p>“Our goal is to not only provide immediate relief. It may look like it’s easy.</p><p> </p><p>He says his vulnerability helped him play the character as he did. “People are afraid of going deep [into character], no one wants to be vulnerable in the world.</p><p>ALSO READ: ‘You want to respect him’: Wiseman Mncube on portraying the life of kwaito star Mandoza</p>Playing real-life characters<p>Mncube’s portrayal of KaLanga is not the first real-life character role he has played. A few years ago, he played Kwaito legend Mandoza in BET’s The Life of Mandoza.</p><p>One would assume it’s easier to portray KaLanga as no one living in this generation saw him; playing Mandoza, who died in 2016, was more scrutinised.</p><p> </p><p>However, Mncube says similarly to how the first televised depiction of Shaka Zulu was by Henry Cele in the 1980s and how people instantly think of Cele when pondering Shaka Zulu, people will think of him when speaking about KaLanga.,</p><p>“I could say for Mandoza it was hard and for Zwide it was easy, but it’s not. Singer-songwriter Khalid performed on the first day, and US singer H.E.R. closed the festival on Sunday, the final day.</p><p>Without any communication, the festival wasn’t hosted in 2024.</p><p>The festival announced its 2025 return at the end of 2024, where organisers also released the first batch of tickets. According to the festival, Doja Cat will still perform on Day 2 of the event.</p><p>“She stays on Sunday, 31st August, it’ll be day 2 now, day 1 will be Saturday 30 August,” said the festival, responding to concerned patrons on social media.</p><p>This will be Doja Cat’s first time performing in South Africa, and the refrain about her coming home is because her biological father, an actor, Dumisani Dlamini, is from the country.</p><p>Doja has previously spoken about visiting South Africa, suggesting that the country is too far for her.</p><p> </p><p>“I still haven’t [been]. I rely on my career to just throw me out to places. I don’t find pockets of time in my life. Picture: Backpagepix</p> </p><p> </p> <p> <p>Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung is subject to court papers aiming to have his estate sequestrated, according to a report from sundayworld.co.za.</p><p>ALSO READ: Nabi drops hint over Chiefs future</p><p>The news website reports that Pent Up Investment CC have filed papers in the Johannesburg High Court, with the company’s boss Costas Couremetis claiming Motaung still owes him over R4.3 million with regards to a property deal. </p>‘indebtedness’<p>An affidavit submitted by Couremetis claims that Motaung has not paid almost half of the R9 million that he was ordered to pay in November 2009. </p><p>“Pursuant to a failure by Lakeshore (Motaung was listed as the sole director of Lakeshore Trading) to make payment of the purchase price for the property in full, the applicant instituted proceedings in the above honourable court and obtained judgment on or about November 12, 2009 in a sum exceeding R9-million, plus interest and legal costs,” read the papers. </p><p> <p> <p> <p> Read more </p> Former Bafana striker set for Pirates exit </p> </p> </p><p>“The indebtedness as it currently stands at the end of January 2024 is in the sum of over R4.3-million.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>“In fairness to the respondent, he has not sought to dispute the indebtedness since the judgment was granted against him. However, he has clearly not been able to pay the full sum, as and when it was due, even after having been given various reasonable and generous indulgences over many years.</p><p>“The respondent has over all of these years lived a very opulent lifestyle, driving a Bentley motor vehicle; owning and living in a large immovable property in a very prestigious area, namely Houghton; wearing very expensive clothing and different, very expensive watches at our various meetings and generally portraying the image of a very successful businessman, who is extremely well off; and who occupies a considerable position in the eyes of society, throughout South Africa, by virtue of the prominent position which he occupies at Kaizer Chiefs Football Club.”</p><p>ALSO READ: Nabi is wrong, Chiefs’ league position is inexcusable</p><p>This is not Motaung’s first brush with the law.
