3155902	无图 <p>Economists observe that an upcoming visit by Canada’s Commissioner for Trade and Investment to Cambodia at the end of May will bring positive results for the Kingdom, by expanding bilateral trade and attracting direct investment from Canada.</p><p>A May 25 press release from Global Affaire Canada announced that Sara Wilshaw, Canada’s chief trade commissioner and Assistant Deputy Minister of International Business Development at Global Affairs Canada, will lead Canada’s largest- ever trade delegation to Cambodia as part of the 2025 Team Canada Trade Mission (TCTM) to Thailand and Cambodia, taking place from May 28 to 30.</p><p>“While in Phnom Penh, Wilshaw will be joined by 90 representatives from over 50 Canadian organisations, seeking to explore commercial and partnership opportunities in this dynamic ASEAN economy. The mission builds on deepening bilateral ties, following an investment promotion visit to Canada by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol in September 2024,” it added.</p><p>The release emphasised that as a signature initiative under Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and Trade Diversification Strategy, TCTMs help Canadian exporters and innovators expand into strategic global markets, strengthen supply chains and forge long-term, inclusive partnerships through direct engagement with key decision-makers and local stakeholders.</p><p>According to the press release, Wilshaw’s visit will include several important events, including meetings with first vice-president of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister Sok Siphana, Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Dith Tina, as well as business-to-business (B2B) sessions between investors from both countries.</p><p>Hong Vanak, an economist at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, told The Post on May 26 that the visit will further boost diplomatic cooperation, especially in terms of trade between Canada-Cambodia and Canada-ASEAN. He added that Cambodia must clearly demonstrate its commitment by providing more incentives to attract Canadian investors for greater direct investment, as well as encouraging increased Canadian purchases of Cambodian products.</p><p>“I believe this upcoming visit is a response to ASEAN’s high-level summit declaration calling for stronger cooperation with ASEAN member states — especially amid global economic uncertainty due to US tariffs and pressure on many countries,” he said.</p><p>“Diversifying markets and strengthening cooperation across all sectors with partner countries is essential for driving Cambodia’s economic growth, particularly in these challenging global times,” he added.</p><p>According to Canadian government statistics, bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Cambodia reached $2.4 billion in 2024. Canada ranked as the 4th largest export market for the Kingdom’s garments and textiles.</p><p>Canadian imports were worth $33.5 million, while exports to Canada exceeded $2.3 billion. In addition, Canadian direct investment in Cambodia totalled approximately $2.9 billion.</p><p>Lim Heng, vice-president of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC), previously told The Post that Canada has strong market potential, with exports increasing almost every year. 3155899	无图 <p>Next month, the second round of negotiations regarding the Trump administration’s 49% “reciprocal” tariffs on Cambodian goods will resume. Although the US appeared to have calculated the tariff rate based on the trade deficit, the origin of goods was likely a decisive factor.</p><p>On May 10, Sun Chanthol, first vice-president of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) and head of the working group on trade and investment coordination between Cambodia and the US, noted that the main topics that would be discussed included expanding the volume of US imports to the Kingdom and managing the origin of Cambodian goods, many of which the US claims originate from China.</p><p>Regarding the origin of goods, Pen Sovicheat, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, stated that goods produced in Cambodia have sufficient added value to be considered Cambodian products, even if the raw materials are sourced from other countries.</p><p>At the May 26 Cambodia Economic Forum, themed “Cambodia’s Economy in the Context of US Reciprocal Tariffs,” organised by the Kampuchea Thmey media outlet, Sovicheat explained that there are two types of rules of origin: wholly obtained, meaning all goods are produced using entirely domestic raw materials, and value-added or sufficient working process, which applies to goods like those in Cambodia’s garment industry exported to the US.</p><p>These are considered Cambodian products because they utilise Cambodian labour, even if raw materials are imported.</p><p>He added that the principle of sufficient value-added is applied by the EU and the UK to Cambodian goods and falls under the ASEAN cumulation principle, which considers goods as domestic if they use raw materials from ASEAN countries and are fully produced with local labour.</p><p>Recently, US trade officials determined that some companies importing solar panels from Cambodia engaged in price dumping in the US market, while receiving subsidies from the Chinese government. As the result the US imposed tariffs on certain Cambodia-based solar companies as high as more than 3,500%. The US International Trade Commission will decide on this matter in June.</p><p>“I want to clarify that it is true that while most Chinese companies have state-owned shares, they compete in the market, just like other companies. Similarly, Cambodia’s commerce ministry state-owned shares in companies like Green Trade, which deals in rice. Despite this, it operates on an equal footing with private companies, experiencing both losses and profits,” Sovicheat clarified.</p><p>The impact of countervailing duties</p><p>Last week, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed optimism that the upcoming tariff negotiations would succeed and result in lower tariffs.</p><p>Kaing Monika, deputy secretary-general of the Textile, Apparel, Footwear and Travel Goods Association in Cambodia (TAFTAC), explained at the forum that well-known Cambodian apparel products are manufactured under contracts with major global brands like Nike, Adidas or Lee Y. The 49% tariff will impact both producers and US consumers.</p><p>“If this tariff is implemented, it affects both sides — producing countries like us and end consumers. Tariffs increase the final market price of products. If prices rise, it affects us as a producing country, making us less attractive. Even if buyers continue purchasing from us and we bear some of the tariff burden, the market price will still increase, and the final burden fall on American consumers. If brands find cheaper alternative producing countries, they will shift elsewhere,” he said.</p><p>When asked about diversifying markets beyond the US, Monika said it depends on brand owners’ decisions to target growing markets or those with growth potential in the next one to two years.</p><p>Sovicheat noted that market diversification can be achieved through bilateral or multilateral free trade agreements, such as RCEP, and by expanding the domestic market.</p><p>As the US scrutinises raw material imports from China, this presents an opportunity for Cambodia to expand domestic raw material production to meet demand. 3155898	无图 <p>Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov is paying a May 26-27 working visit to Cambodia. He is the highest-level visitor in the history of law enforcement cooperation between the two nations, and his arrival comes just days after former Okhna Heng Sithy was extradited to the Kingdom from Russia.</p><p>Krasnov was welcomed by Chea Leang, Cambodia’s Prosecutor General at the Supreme Court, as well as the leadership of the Ministry of Justice.</p><p>In Phnom Penh, Krasnov laid wreaths at the Independence Monument and the monument to the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk.</p><p>He will hold talks with the heads of relevant authorities and discuss issues of bilateral cooperation with other officials. A number of documents which will help strengthen and develop relations will also be signed, according to a press release from the Russian Prosecutor’s Office.</p><p>According to the release, the relation between Russian supervisory agencies and the Cambodian authorities began more than 10 years ago, and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the Russian Prosecutor General"s Office and the justice ministry was signed in 2016.</p><p>It added that in September last year, on the sidelines of the 9th Eastern Economic Forum, Krasnov and Leang signed an interdepartmental MoU on cooperation, which became the foundation for activating joint measures to ensure the rule of law and protect the rights of citizens.</p><p>The high-level visit began two days after Russian authorities returned Heng Sithy to Cambodia to face charges of aggravated blackmail. Following a series of public spats with officials, former high-profile businessman Sithy was arrested in Russia in January.</p><p>On the night of May 24, at the request of the justice ministry, Sithy was transferred to Cambodia. An INTERPOL red alert had been placed on the former businessman.</p><p>Sithy has publicly accused Sar Sokha, Minister of Interior, Hun To, a prominent Okhna, and Sar Thet, Commissioner-General of the National Police, of actively working to protect online criminals in Cambodia.</p><p>His allegations have been repeatedly refuted by the interior ministry, the national police and Hun To, who deemed them “fabricated information with malicious intent aimed at misleading the public”.</p><p>Justice ministry spokesperson Seng Dyna told The Post that Sithy’s return was in line with a 2017 extradition treaty signed by Cambodia and Russia, and followed a court-ordered arrest warrant.</p><p>Sithy has been charged with aggravated blackmail pursuant to articles 372 and 374 of the Criminal Code. 3155897	无图 <p>Despite a combination of more than 10 legal complaints landing him in prison for 10 days, Ouk Mao says he not afraid and has not lost his willingness to protect Cambodia’s natural resources. Instead, the environmental activist and community journalist claimed that he would continue to protect the forest, especially Prey Lang, which he considers his “heart”.</p><p>He noted that although he is not a registered as a journalist with the Ministry of Information, he still believes he has the right to protect Cambodia’s forests.</p><p>“Before I was arrested and jailed, I was protecting the forest at 10% effort. But now that I’ve been released, I will increase my commitment to 100%. I’m still doing the same thing, but I’ll do it even more than before — even if I’m oppressed,” he said.</p><p>Ouk Mao, 57, was arrested in Stung Treng province on May 16 and temporarily held in the provincial prison. He was charged with “incitement to commit crimes” and “public defamation”. The provincial court ordered his release on Sunday, May 25.</p><p>Following his release, he said he must comply with three conditions. He must submit the court’s release warrant to the local commune police within three days of returning home, he must inform local authorities if he changes his residence and he must appear in court whenever summoned.</p><p>Mao claims there are no restrictions preventing him from continuing his forest protection activities. However, provincial and court officials advised him to “act within the law,” which he agreed to do.</p><p>“I’m not afraid. What I do is for the forest, for my people and for my country. If I were logging or destroying forests, then yes, I would fear prison and punishment. But if I’m protecting the forest — no, I’m not afraid of corrupt officials,” he said.</p><p>His detention sparked criticism from several civil society organisations and foreign media outlets. On May 22, the Ministry of Information clarified that Mao is involved in 15 separate legal cases related to various alleged crimes, committed since February 2022. He was arrested for incitement, public defamation, inciting violence and the illegal occupation of state forest land.</p><p>The ministry stated that Mao works for the online Intry Plus News unit, but he is not a licensed journalist, having failed to meet the requirements to apply for accreditation. Specifically, journalists applying for a license press card must not be involved in any legal disputes or judicial procedures.</p><p>Additionally, the Stung Treng provincial administration stated that an arson attack on Mao’s home was related to a personal land dispute. He is also accused of having occupied large areas of forest land. However, Ouk Mao denies these allegations.</p><p>“I say sincerely, from my heart and truthfully, that I’ve committed none of the offenses in any of those complaints. Not one. I have never logged or cleared even a bit of forest. I’ve never encroached or grabbed forest land,” he told The Post.</p><p>He added that while he has bought land in the past, it was not protected forest land. He said the land was purchased from local officials, including village chiefs.</p><p>Mao, who has seven children to care for, has requested that the court drop all charges and complaints against him. It was seen swimming in Anlong Kampi, Chroy Banteay village, Chrouy Bantea commune, in Prek Prosop district. A research team from the Fisheries Administration (FiA) and WWF-Cambodia saw the new arrival swimming with a pod of four adults.</p><p>The new arrival means the Kingdom has welcomed seven new dolphins this year, 5 in Kratie province and two in Stung Treng province, bringing the total population to 111.</p><p>To ensure the survival of the species, Mekong dolphins, the FiA and WWF-Cambodia are working closely with local authorities, communities and partners to strengthen enforcement of fisheries laws and enforce a ban on the use of fishing nets in dolphin habitats. They provide employment options for Mekong River communities and conduct educational outreach programmes, as well as monitoring the dolphin population.</p><p>The ministry expressed its gratitude for the work of the 72 river guards in Stung Treng and Kratie provinces and pledged to do its best to support their work. The ministry also thanked its partner organisations, local authorities and the people who participate in maintaining and protecting the Kingdom’s valuable fisheries resources.</p><p>In a related event, the National Assembly convened a session to discuss, review and approve a draft fisheries law on May 22.</p><p>The law is designed to replace a 2006 fisheries law and aims to regulate effectively conserve and develop the fisheries sector to ensure sustainable food security along with economic and environmental sustainability, as well as protect the rights and interests of fishermen, fishing communities and traders, in accordance with the context of socio-economic development. 3155895	无图 <p>Cambodia will organise the first-ever “Mekong Dolphin Festival and Kayak Races” at the Prek Rumkel Ecotourism Community in Stung Treng province this weekend, as part of efforts to promote tourism during the “green season”.</p><p>According to a May 22 Ministry of Tourism announcement, the ministry will partner with the Stung Treng provincial administration to host the three-day event. It will be held at the ecotourism community, in Anlong Svay village, of Borey O’Svay Senchey district’s Prek Rumkel commune, from May 30 to June 1.</p><p>The festival aims to promote dolphin conservation, publicise potential ecotourism areas, diversify tourism activities and enhance the quality of tourism products and services. It also encourages local communities to actively participate in conserving natural resources and environmental hygiene to attract more domestic and international tourists,” it said.</p><p>The announcement also shared some of the key activities that will take place, including a Mekong dolphin blessing ceremony (a traditional chanting ritual), kayak racing and exhibitions that showcase local ecotourism products and regional foods. A charity marathon and traditional bat races will also be held, and tourists are invited to camp on Lon Island and Tunsay Island, visits the Borey O’Svay ecotourism community or take part in an excursion to the Sophoan Mit waterfall.</p><p>In February 2025, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed support for rebranding the rainy season as the “Green Season”, replacing the term “low season” in the tourism sector. The aim of the new terminology is to highlight Cambodia’s lush landscapes, cool weather and refreshing environment during the rainy season, enhancing the visitor experience.</p><p>The festival will take place shortly after a May 25 announcement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, which reported that so far this year, seven dolphin calves have been born, raising the total Mekong dolphin population to 111.</p><p>Din Somethearith, president of the Cambodia Tourism Federation, told The Post in early May that the Green Season is when Cambodia"s weather becomes more favourable — cooler than the March-April period and with regular rainfall. As the population ages and the number of single-person households increases, it is said that many find cooking daunting because they feel it is too much effort or struggle to use all of the ingredients.</p>Breakfast ready in 10 min.<p>Even when she was still supporting her late husband, a company employee who was often transferred, and their three children, Murakami was helping people trying to cook for their families by suggesting quick and delicious recipes through newspapers, magazines and other media outlets.</p><p>However, due to the declining birthrate and aging population, as well as the increase in single-person households, more people are cooking for themselves. Murakami herself started living alone after her husband died in 2014.</p><p>Murakami said she often hears during her cooking classes from students of her same generation that they have become unable to eat as much as they used to or that cooking has become a hassle.</p><p>Considering these societal changes, in her recent books and other works she has been pushing the idea of “lowering barriers to cooking.”</p><p>“Our metabolisms keep renewing, so we need to keep eating. When eating alone, she often cooks and eats in the back room, she said.</p><p>Murakami then showed how she prepares her so-called repetitive breakfast.</p><p>In the freezer, she usually stores “single-serving frozen food” packs. Then she adds one tablespoon of dashi-flavored liquid miso and mixes lightly. She then microwaves again, uncovered, for three minutes to finish off vegetable-packed “microwave miso soup.”</p><p>While heating 150 grams of freezer-stored rice in the microwave for about three minutes, she grabs items like natto, tofu, eggs, pickles or cheese from the refrigerator, placing them on small plates. A “sumptuous breakfast set meal” is ready in about 10 minutes.</p><p>“With eggs, natto or cheese, you can get lots of protein. Protein is essential for building the body, so be sure to get enough at breakfast,” she said.</p><p>The packs can be used in a variety of other dishes by adding to ramen or soup, or stir-frying, as examples.</p><p>Murakami freezes rice in 150-gram portions. She also prepares the single-serving frozen packs when she has time.</p>Be wary of salt content<p>It’s Murakami’s philosophy to not hesitate to use what’s convenient. In addition to the liquid miso, Murakami cooks with deli foods sold at supermarkets and convenience stores.</p><p>One of her favorites is individually portioned oden. Oden is rich in protein because it has ingredients like fish cakes and eggs, but lacks vegetables. So, Murakami adds spinach.</p><p>To do so, she microwaves 100 grams of spinach for two minutes in a heat-resistant container, covered with plastic wrap. She then briefly dips in water and squeezes excess liquid out before adding to oden.</p><p>When using ready-made dishes, she advises to be careful to not take in too much salt. “Since they are made to taste delicious from the first bite, they tend to be high in salt,” she said. “You need to make some changes.”</p><p>To enjoy ready-made, simmered dishes like cooked hijiki seaweed or chikuzen-ni chicken and vegetables, Murakami microwaves them with a tablespoon of water for one minute, then discards the water the seasonings dissolved in.</p><p>For ready-made Chinese dishes like happosai — in which ingredients such as shrimp and vegetables are sauteed — and sweet and sour pork, Murakami adds chopped cabbage or onions and microwaves for about three minutes, making for a less salty dish filled with vegetables.</p><p>“Since making dishes like happosai, which requires many ingredients, can be time-consuming, it’s smart to make use of deli foods,” Murakami said.</p><p>“Today, more people can live to be almost 100 years old, but it is important to maintain a healthy, active body by having three proper meals a day,” she said.</p><p>Not everyone is able to cook due to health conditions and other circumstances. Participants were divided into having high or poor cooking skills based on seven qualifiers, including “being able to peel vegetables or fruit” and “being able to cook simmered foods.” Over the course of this period, 520 of the participants died.</p><p>Using this data, people with the same conditions, such as whether they lived with others, age, sex, income and access to grocery stores, were compared based on differences in cooking skills.</p><p>Those with poor cooking skills who lived alone had a 2.5 times higher risk of death compared to those living alone with high cooking skills, it was concluded.</p><p>In cases where people lived with others, there was little difference in mortality rates regardless of cooking skills.</p><p>Those with poorer cooking skills also tended to cook less frequently, eat fewer vegetables and also tended to walk less.</p><p>“Being able to cook is likely to increase fruit and vegetable intake as well as the practice of physical activities such as shopping, ultimately leading to lower risk of death. There is also a possibility that Pakistan may send two separate delegations — one to Europe and another to North America, including Canada — with the PPP chairman likely to lead one of them.</p><p>While in New York, the delegation is scheduled to meet United Nations Secretary General António Guterres and the current president of the UN General Assembly. They will also address a meeting of permanent representatives to the UN.</p><p>From New York, the delegation will travel to Washington on June 3, a day after the US Congress resumes its session following a post-budget recess. Islamabad has already dismissed this claim as inaccurate. Since the ceasefire was announced on May 10, President Trump has issued five statements clarifying that it was the United States — not India — that negotiated and ensured the implementation of the ceasefire.</p><p>India has also expressed displeasure over Trump’s repeated public statements that the Kashmir issue requires resolution and that he is willing to mediate.
