With the United States announcing steep tariffs and a sweeping list of restrictions affecting key global players, many world leaders have stepped forward to express disagreement. What’s remarkable is not just their opposition, but how they have chosen to communicate it.</p><p>Leaders around the world have all voiced concern over the implications of the new US tariff regime, but they have done so with strategic precision by sending messages that are as thoughtful as they are strong. Their messaging strategies reveal a shared principle: Assertiveness without antagonism.</p><p>Public communication becomes not just a reflection of policy, but a tool of diplomacy in its own right.</p><p>In his April 16 keynote address at the S. Rajaratnam Lecture, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong spoke directly to the tensions sparked by the US tariffs. “We should avoid a scenario where actions taken in the name of de-risking lead to a damaging spiral of tit-for-tat responses,” he said.</p><p>His message was clear that Singapore is not naive about the stakes, but the response must be measured, constructive and globally minded. 3112937	有图 <p>T<p>he founders of Taman Safari Indonesia, a prominent wildlife park in Bogor, West Java, are in hot water over allegations that they exploited and abused children in a now-defunct circus formerly run by their family.</p><p>Eight former workers of the Oriental Circus Indonesia (OCI) recently visited the Human Rights Ministry and the House of Representatives, demanding justice for the abuse they claim to have endured while employed as child performers in the circus during the 1970s.</p><p>Founded in 1971 by Hadi Manansang, the OCI was one of the country’s first and most popular modern circus groups. It remained active until 1997, with a final commemorative performance held in 2020 to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Hadi has since passed away.</p><p>Hadi"s children, Jansen Manansang, Frans Manansang and Tony Sumampau, who also performed in the circus, went on to establish Taman Safari Indonesia in 1981. Former OCI performers have accused them of being involved in the alleged abuse that occurred during the circus"s operation.</p><p>According to the performers" legal representative, the circus management allegedly took in more than 60 underprivileged children, some as young as two years old from their families and trained them as performers. 3112936	有图 <p>T<p>he Finance Ministry will provide guarantees to support foreign investment in the country’s future capital city, currently under construction in East Kalimantan, the Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN) has said.</p><p>The guarantees, aimed at easing investor concerns over the megaproject’s execution and continuity, will be issued jointly by the Finance Ministry and PT Penjaminan Infrastruktur Indonesia (PT PII), the ministry’s infrastructure guarantee vehicle.</p><p>“Fellow investors, no need to worry about these projects being terminated halfway. Ltd. 3112935	有图 <p>T<p>he government has vowed to trade with China as usual after Beijing warned other countries against striking tariff deals with the United States at China’s expense.</p><p>Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, director general of international trade negotiations at the Trade Ministry, told <i>The Jakarta Post</i> on Tuesday that “Indonesia will trade as usual with all trading partners both in traditional and non-traditional markets”.</p><p>He further expressed the government’s commitment to upholding the principles of multilateral trade by supporting fair and transparent trade practices while opposing protectionism and discrimination.</p><p>“China as Indonesia’s key trading partner upholds similar [principles], hence both parties, along with other trading partners, will respect each other’s rights and obligations in ensuring a rules-based international trading system,” he explained.</p><p>As Indonesia’s top trading partner, China accounted for nearly a quarter of Indonesian exports last year. 3112932	有图 <p>A<p>soldier gives a thumbs up as he crosses a rice field on a combine harvester in remote Papua, where a government food security mega-project has raised fears of mass deforestation.</p><p>Keen to end its reliance on rice imports, Indonesia wants to plant vast tracts of the crop, along with sugar cane for biofuel, in the restive eastern region.</p><p>But environmentalists warn it could become the world"s largest deforestation project, threatening endangered species and Jakarta"s climate commitments.</p><p>And activists fear the scheme will fuel rights violations in a region long plagued by alleged military abuses as a separatist insurgency rumbles on.</p><p>The project"s true scale is hard to ascertain; even government statements vary.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>At a minimum, however, it aims to plant several million hectares of rice and sugar cane across South Papua province"s Merauke. In the region"s Kaliki district, AFP saw farmers supported by soldiers tending rice paddies in recently-cleared land.</p><p>"This location used to be like the one on the right here. 3112920	有图 <p>P<p>resident Prabowo Subianto has authorized rice exports to countries in need, reversing an earlier statement by Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman, who had insisted on prioritizing domestic reserves.</p><p>Speaking during a visit to South Sumatra on Wednesday, Prabowo said the country could share its rice surplus with others without seeking high profits, in the spirit of “humanity,” as long as the basic production, logistics and administrative costs were covered.</p><p>“I have received reports from the agriculture minister and the coordinating food minister that several countries have requested rice imports from Indonesia. I approved it. I ordered that rice be sent to them,” Prabowo declared.</p><p>According to the President, rice production reached record highs over the past four months. However, the surplus has created a new logistical challenge, as government storage facilities are nearing full capacity.</p><p>To address the issue, Prabowo ordered a swift, short-term solution by repurposing idle land owned by the government, military and police as makeshift storage sites.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>“I’ve asked government agencies, state-owned enterprises [SOEs], the Army and the police to join forces. 3112919	有图 <p>I<p>nvestment from domestic and foreign investors grew roughly in line with expectations in the first quarter of this year at just shy of a quarter of this year’s annual target set by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).</p><p>Investment and Downstream Minister Rosan Roeslani revealed on Wednesday that realized investment in the first three months of 2025 amounted to Rp 465.2 trillion (US$27.6 billion), or 24.4 percent of the full-year target of Rp 1.9 quadrillion.</p><p>“The investment in this first quarter was on track with the target set for us by Bappenas,” Rosan said in a press conference at the State Palace, as reported by state-owned news agency Antara.</p><p>His presentation slides seen by <i>The Jakarta Post</i> detail that 49.5 percent of the investment was foreign direct investment (FDI), while the rest came from within the country.</p><p>The first-quarter realization marks a 16 percent year-on-year (yoy) increase,up 2.7 percent compared to the preceding quarter.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>“These are very encouraging figures. 3112918	有图 <p>T<p>he reescalation of global trade tensions has taken a dramatic turn as United States President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on over 60 countries, including Indonesia, marking the return of aggressive protectionism under what many are calling “Trump 2.0”.</p><p>Washington has imposed a universal 10 percent base tariff on imports and additional levies on selected countries based on their trade surplus with the US. For Indonesia, this translates into a 32 percent tariff rate, posing risks to our export-dependent sectors and macroeconomic stability.</p><p>Indonesia is vulnerable through multiple transmission channels. On the trade front, the impact is twofold: a decline in exports to the US and a risk of being flooded with redirected Chinese products due to shrinking access to the US market.</p><p>This could intensify competition in the domestic market, particularly for low- to mid-range manufactured goods. Increased volumes of redirected Chinese exports, ranging from textiles and plastic products to electronics and household goods, could undercut domestic producers on price and scale.</p><p>Domestic industries that produce similar goods may find it harder to compete, especially those that rely on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with limited efficiency and capital. If this is not addressed with appropriate safeguards, it could lead to sales decline and margin pressure for local manufacturers, which could affect employment.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>Indonesia’s top export products to the US – textiles and apparel, footwear, electronics and furniture – are directly exposed to the tariff shock. These sectors also contribute significantly to employment and are integrated with global value chains. While the nation recalls the struggle for gender equality of Raden Ajeng Kartini, the women"s empowerment icon, it also recounts the epidemic and institutionalized violence that continues to haunt women.</p><p>Despite progressive legislation and initiatives, including the National Action Plan for the Prevention and Addressing of Violence against Women and Children (RAN P3AKS), recent high-profile evidence points to structural and psychological gaps in the safety and protection of Indonesian women.</p><p>Ironically, the most secure spaces, such as universities, schools, places of worship, police offices and hospitals, have become “perfect places” for sexual violence.</p><p>In one of Indonesia"s leading universities, a professor, Edy Meiyanto, was found guilty of sexually harassing his female student. In Jombang, East Java, a pesantren (Islamic boarding school), which is supposed to be a place for young Muslims to look for a moral compass, a kyai (pesantren head) was convicted of sexually abusing his students.</p><p>More recently, a regional police chief was arrested for sexual exploitation of children. Even the medical field has not been spared, as evident in the case of a physician who is facing justice for alleged sexual assault of his patients under the guise of treatment.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>These are not isolated stories. They are indicative of a larger crisis. 3112916	有图 <p>A<p> proposal for the government to name late president Soeharto as a national hero has been met with stiff opposition from rights activists, who fear it would exacerbate a culture of impunity and eventually absolve the authoritarian leader of his alleged corruption and rights violations.</p><p>Soeharto, former father-in-law of President Prabowo Subianto, is on the list of nominees for this year’s national heroes that is still under the scrutiny of the Social Affairs Ministry.</p><p>But rights activists are calling for the government to drop Soeharto"s name from the list, saying that the former president should not even be in contention because he oversaw three decades of repressive rule and one of the world"s most corrupt regimes before being forced to step down in 1998.</p><p>“We strongly disagree with [making Soeharto a national hero].
